Description

ILLUMINATION FOR REFRIGERATOR
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates generally to a refrigerator installed with a door and more particularly, to an illumination assembly on the door to illuminate the contents of the refrigerator when a user opens the door.
A conventional refrigerator has a light source installed on the side wall or the back wall of the refrigerator's cabinet interior.
Such orientation can cause the illumination on the content to be uneven when the user opens the door to either retrieve contents or deposit items in the refrigerator. The illumination can be blocked by the contents when the illumination is placed on the walls of the cabinet.
Items near the light source are brightly lit while the items spaced further away are usually not sufficiently illuminated. Further, the items nearer to the light source will cast shadow on the items placed further away from the light source.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to one aspect of the invention, there is provided a refrigerator comprising a door provided with an illumination assembly, wherein the illumination assembly includes at least one light source; and a door switch which is configured for switching on the at least one light source when the refrigerator door is displaced out of the closed position. The light source is preferably a Light Emitting Diode (LED).
In another aspect of the invention, the illumination assembly may include a refractive lens. In another aspect of the invention another embodiment, the illumination assembly may include a a Fresnel lens. In yet another aspect of the invention, illumination assembly may include a diffuser lens.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a refrigerator comprising a door comprising a major outer side, an opposite major inner side, a number of minor sides extending between the major outer side and the major inner side. The refrigerator is provided with at least one door joint to the edge of at least one cabinet. At least one illumination assembly for illuminating an interior of a refrigerator cabinet to which the refrigerator door is mounted, in use. The illumination assembly may include at least one light source, preferably at least one LED. The at least one light source is located at a particular one of the minor sides of the refrigerator door.
More particularly, the at least one light source may be located at the minor side of the refrigerator door which is closest, in use, to an opening into an interior of a refrigerator cabinet to which the refrigerator door is hingedly mounted, in use, when the refrigerator door is displaced out of the closed position. As such, the at least one light source, in use, illuminates an interior of the refrigerator when the door is displaced out of the closed position.
In yet another aspect of the invention there is provided a refrigerator with a light source which is oriented for directing light to an opening into an interior of the refrigerator cabinet.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a refrigerator comprising a door, the door comprises a major outer side, an opposite major inner side, a number of minor sides extending between the major outer side and the major inner side, wherein, the door has at least one light source for illuminating an interior of a refrigerator cabinet to which the refrigerator door is mounted, in use, the at least one light source being located at the major inner side wherein the light source is oriented for directing light to an opening into an interior of the refrigerator cabinet when the refrigerator door is displaced out of the closed position.
With the illumination assembly provided on the refrigerator door, directing light from the same point of view as that of the user when the door is opened makes the user better served since the light source is pointed in almost the same direction from which the user will be looking when the refrigerator door is opened. This is made possible when the light source is disposed nearest to the attachment between the door and the refrigerator cabinet and switched on by the door switch when the refrigerator door is displaced out of the closed position.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will become more apparent from the following detailed description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.
The invention extends also to an illumination assembly as described and defined hereinabove.
The invention extends also to a refrigerator door including the illumination assembly as described and defined hereinabove.

Figure 1 shows a front view of a refrigerator 1 comprising a door 2 displaced out of the closed position.
Figure 2A shows the door 2 comprising a major outer side 282, an opposite major inner side 284, a number of minor sides 286 extending between the major outer side 282 and the major inner side
284.
Figure 2B shows at least one illumination assembly 24 for illuminating an interior 12 of a refrigerator cabinet to which the refrigerator door 2 is mounted, in use. The illumination assembly 24 may include at least one light source 241, preferably at least one LED. The at least one light source 241 is located at a particular one of the minor sides 286 of the refrigerator door 2.
More particularly, the at least one light source 241 may be located at the minor side 286 of the refrigerator door 2 which is closest, in use, to an opening 14 into an interior 12 of a refrigerator cabinet to which the refrigerator door 2 is hingedly mounted, in use, when the refrigerator door 2 is displaced out of the closed position. As such, the at least one light source 241 may be located, in use, for illuminating an interior 12 of the refrigerator cabinet when the door 2 is displaced out of the closed position.
The at least one light source 241 is controlled by a door switch 26 comprising a depressible button 262 that is biased towards the extended position and projection 264 for depressing the depressible button 262.
When the door 2 is in the closed position, the depressible button 262 is depressed by contact with the projection 264 as the door 2 closes as shown in Figure 4C; and in this depressed position, the power to the illumination assembly 24 is cut off thereby switching off the light source 241.
When the door 2 is displaced out of the closed position as shown in Figure 3A, the projection 264 moves away and releases the depressible button 262 thereby supplying power from a power source (not shown) to the light source 241 thereby switching on the light source 241.
Figure 5 shows an illumination assembly 24 provided with the light source 241 without any optical lens but only a flat transparent protective covering 240.
Figure 6 is a diagrammatic view showing the propagation of light ray from the illumination assembly 24 when fitted with the flat transparent protective covering 240. To better direct light from light source 241 to an opening 14 into an interior 12 of a refrigerator cabinet, the flat transparent protective covering 240 of the illumination assembly 24 can be replaced with a Fresnel lens 242 as shown in Figure 7; and Figure 8 shows the propagation of light ray through the Fresnel lens 242.
Alternatively, the Fresnel lens 242 can be replaced by a refractive lens 243 as shown in Figure 9; and Figure 10 shows the propagation of light ray from light source through the refractive lens 243.
A diffused effect can be achieved by using a diffuser lens 244 instead of the flat transparent protective covering 240 as shown in Figure 11; and Figure 12 shows the propagation of light ray through the diffuser lens 244.
In another embodiment illustrated in Figure 13, the light source 241 is located at the major inner side 284. More specifically, the light source 241 located at the major inner side 284 is oriented for directing light to an opening 14 into an interior 12 of the refrigerator cabinet as illustrated in Figure 14. Preferably, the refrigerator 1 includes a door switch 26 which is configured for switching on the at least one light source 241 only when the door 2 is displaced out of the closed position. Further, the directing of the light to the opening 14 can be effected by a Fresnel lens 242 (not shown).
While the invention is susceptible to various modifications and alternative constructions, certain illustrated embodiments hereof have been described above in detail. It should be understood, however, that there is no intention to limit the invention to the specific forms disclosed, but on the contrary, the intention is to cover all modifications, alternative constructions and equivalents falling within the spirit and scope of the invention.
