Abstract

An electromotive device for non-invasive application of a composition, the device comprising: a container for containing the composition, the container comprising an opening; an applicator connected to the container within the opening such that the applicator is in fluid connection with the container; and a power source for generating an electromotive force; wherein, in use, contact between the skin of a user and the applicator induces transdermal application of the composition to the skin by the electromotive force.

Description

AN ELECTROMOTIVE DEVICE FOR NON-INVASIVE APPLICATION OF A
COMPOSITION
Field
[0001 ] The present invention relates to electromotive devices for non-invasive application of a composition to the skin.
Background
[0002] Non-invasive methods for the transdermal application of compositions, such as skin care or pharmaceutical compositions, are desirable, as they allow transdermal application of the composition in question without breaking the surface of the skin.
[0003] Certain methods of transdermal application involve the use of electricity. For example, electroporation involves applying pulses of electrical current to the skin to increase the permeability of skin cells and create new pathways in the skin for the passage of molecules. In another example, iontophoresis involves applying an electrical current to the composition to charge the composition. Both electroporation and iontophoresis induce transdermal application of a composition to the skin by an electromotive force.
[0004] Conventional non-invasive methods suffer several drawbacks. Equipment used in these methods often have complex operating procedures and the methods are largely only practiced by trained practitioners.
[0005] There is a need for a product to simply and conveniently allow a user to apply a composition to their skin using an electromotive device.
Summary
[0006] According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided an electromotive device for non-invasive application of a composition, the device comprising:
a container for containing the composition, the container comprising an opening; an applicator connected to the container within the opening such that the applicator is in fluid connection with the container; and
a power source for generating an electromotive force;
wherein, in use, contact between the skin of a user and the applicator induces transdermal application of the composition to the skin by the electromotive force.
[0007] The electromotive force may be generated by creating a charge differential between the skin of a user and the composition. The device may accordingly comprise one or more electrodes adapted to create the charge differential.
[0008] The electromotive force may be iontophoresis, electroporation or a combination thereof.
[0009] The composition may be a pharmaceutical product or a skin care product.
[0010] The container may be adapted to be filled with the composition by a user.
[001 1 ] The applicator may comprise at least one roller ball, at least one pad, or a combination thereof. In preferred embodiments, the device may comprise a plurality of roller balls or pads, to provide more efficient application of the composition to the skin. In some embodiments, five roller balls may be used.
[0012] The electromotive device may also comprise a pressure sensor for controlling the fluid connection between the applicator and the container. The electromotive device may further comprise a moisture sensor and/or a pH sensor, to detect moisture levels on the skin and pH values.
[0013] The electromotive device may also comprise a display. The display may be used to display information such as (depending on the embodiment) the duration of application, the amount of composition applied, the pressure detected by the pressure sensor, the moisture level on the skin detected by the moisture sensor, and/or the pH value detected by the pH sensor. [0014] The electromotive device may further comprise heating apparatus, and/or a vibrator, to apply heat and/or vibration to a user's skin, either directly or indirectly (e.g. heat may be indirectly applied by heating the composition, in some instances).
[0015] According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided an electromotive head for non-invasive application of a composition, the electromotive head comprising:
a housing;
an applicator arranged on the housing; and
a power source housed within the housing for generating an electromotive force; wherein the housing is adapted to be removably connected to a container such that the applicator is in fluid connection with the container;
wherein, in use, contact between the skin of a user and the applicator induces transdermal application of the contents of the container to the skin by an electromotive force.
[0016] The electromotive force may be generated by creating a charge differential between the skin of a user and the composition. The device may accordingly comprise one or more electrodes adapted to create the charge differential.
[0017] The electromotive force may be iontophoresis, electroporation or a combination thereof.
[0018] The applicator may comprise at least one roller ball, at least one pad, or a combination thereof. In preferred embodiments, the head may comprise a plurality of roller balls or pads, to provide more efficient application of the composition to the skin. In some embodiments, five roller balls may be used.
[0019] The electromotive head may also comprise a pressure sensor for controlling the fluid connection between the applicator and the container. The electromotive head may further comprise a moisture sensor and/or a pH sensor, to detect moisture levels on the skin and pH values.
[0020] The electromotive device may also comprise a display. The display may be used to display information such as (depending on the embodiment) the duration of application, the amount of composition applied, the pressure detected by the pressure sensor, the moisture level on the skin detected by the moisture sensor, and/or the pH value detected by the pH sensor.
[0021 ] The electromotive head may further comprise heating apparatus, and/or a vibrator, to apply heat and/or vibration to a user's skin, either directly or indirectly (e.g. heat may be indirectly applied by heating the composition, in some instances).
[0022] According to yet another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a container adapted to be removably connected to the electromotive head the subject of one aspect of the present invention.

Description of Embodiments
[0024] Referring to Figures 1 to 4, Figure 1 depicts a profile view of an electromotive device 10 for non-invasive application of a composition (not shown), the subject of one embodiment of the present invention. The electromotive device 10 comprises a container 12 containing the composition, the container having an opening (not shown). The electromotive device 10 comprises a head 14, the head comprising applicators 16, and a power source (not shown) connected to applicators 16. The power source is configured to generate an electromotive force. In use, contact between the skin of a user and the applicators 16 induces transdermal application of the composition to the skin by means of the electromotive force. [0025] The electromotive force may be generated by creating a charge differential between the skin of the user and the composition, in order to induce transdermal application of the contents of the container 12 to the skin of a user .
[0026] The charge differential may be caused by an electrical current being applied to the composition (in the case of iontophoresis). Alternatively, the charge differential may be caused by an electrical current being applied to the skin of the user (in the case of electroporation). The device may comprise electrodes to apply the electric current to either the composition or to the skin of the user. In some embodiments, the electromotive device may be adapted to induce iontophoresis or electroporation.
[0027] The container 12 may be a tube, defining a receiving zone (not shown) for receiving the composition. The container may comprise an attachment formation such as a screw thread for attaching to the head 14 to the container.
[0028] The head portion 14 may be connected to the container 12 such that each applicator 16 is in fluid connection with the receiving zone, or the composition, when in use, such that contents of the container 12 can flow from the container 12 through the head portion 14 to the applicators 16. The composition may be a pharmaceutical product or a skin care product. In certain embodiments of the invention, the container 12 may be adapted to be filled and refilled by a user. In other embodiments, the container 12 may be supplied to the user pre-filled.
[0029] The applicators 16 may be any conventional applicators suitable for inducing the transdermal application of the contents of the container 12 to the skin of a user by an electromotive force. The applicators 16 may comprise a ball and socket applicator.
[0030] The electromotive device 10 may comprise a pressure sensor 18 for controlling the fluid connection between the head portion 14 and the container 12. When pressure is applied to the head portion 14 along the axis between the head portion 14 and the container 12 (for example when the head portion 14 is pressed against the skin of a user), the pressure sensor 18 is compressed, bringing the head portion 14 into fluid connection with the container 12. When the pressure is removed, the pressure sensor 18 expands, disconnecting the head portion 14 from the container 12. [0031 ] With reference to Figure 2, the embodiment depicted comprises five roller ball applicators arranged in a cross shape along two perpendicular axes. Alternative embodiments may comprise fewer or a greater number of applicators 16. In other embodiments, the applicators 16 may be pads, or a combination of roller balls and pads.
[0032] With reference to Figure 1 , the roller balls 16 sit proud of a surface of the head portion 14 which is substantially planar. In alternative embodiments (such as that depicted in Figures 5 and 6), that surface may be curved.
[0033] The device 10 may further include various other sensors. For example, the device may include a moisture sensor, to detect a level of moisture on the skin of the user; a pH sensor to determine the pH of any moisture present; a flow rate sensor to determine the flow of composition out of the container 12. The moisture sensor may be used to detect whether the skin is, for example, oily or dry, and the pH sensor to determine whether it is too acidic or too basic. If the skin environment is too acidic, for example, this can cause the skin to become prone to acne. Information derived from the sensors can be used to determine how much of a particular composition should be applied, or indeed which product is most appropriate for a particular user's skin.
[0034] The device 10 may further include a controller, which may control the level of electromotive force generated by the device 10. This may be responsive to data provided from the sensor(s) (discussed above) provided in the device 10. The controller may also control the flow rate through the applicator(s) 16, for example by widening or narrowing the opening in which the applicator resides.
[0035] The device 10 may further comprise a display in communication with the controller, which may display readings from any sensor(s) provided on the device. This would allow the user to manually adjust various settings of the device 10 - for example, turning a dial to decrease the flow rate through the applicator(s) 16. In some cases, a remote control or app (on a tablet/mobile phone) could be provided, to allow a user to control settings of the device 10. The remote control/app may communicate with the device 10 via a wireless communication protocol, such as Bluetooth or Wifi.
[0036] The device 10 may also comprise a heating means, such as heat filaments, to provide heat to the compound, the applicator and the skin of a user as required when in use. Heating of the skin (preferably to around 40 degrees Celsius) promotes vasodilation, which can assist with the transdermal application of the composition. Similarly, a vibrator may be provided on the head 1 14 and used to vibrate the skin, which also promotes vasodilation.
[0037] With reference to Figures 5 and 6, in accordance with an alternative aspect of the present invention, an example embodiment of an electromotive head 1 14 is depicted as a stand alone device adapted to removably connect to a container by any suitable means. The electromotive head 1 14 comprises a housing 1 15 and applicators 1 16 arranged on the housing 1 15. The electromotive head 1 14 further comprises a power source in the form of two batteries 122, for generating an electromotive force. In use, when the applicator is attached to a container, contact between the skin of a user and the applicators 1 16 induces transdermal application of the composition to the skin by means of the electromotive force. Advantageously, this aspect of the present invention allows the head 1 14 to be attached to a container of a user's choosing.
[0038] The head 1 14 may comprise a pressure sensor 1 18 for controlling the fluid connection between the head portion 1 14 and a container.
[0039] The housing 1 15 may define an open end which corresponds and attaches to the opening of a container, such as by screw threading or magnetism.
[0040] The power supply may comprise electrodes 126 for establishing electrical connection between the power supply and the composition. The electromotive head may include a charging plug 120 for charging the batteries 122.
[0041 ] The electromotive head 1 14 may comprise heat filaments 124 to provide heat to the compound, the applicator and the skin of a user as required when in use. Heating apparatus may also be included in the electromotive device 10. Heating of the skin (preferably to around 40 degrees Celsius) promotes vasodilation, which can assist with the transdermal application of the composition. Similarly, a vibrator may be provided on the head 1 14 and used to vibrate the skin, which also promotes vasodilation.
[0042] The electromotive head 1 14 may comprise various further sensors as described above, such as a moisture sensor, to detect a level of moisture on the skin of the user; a pH sensor to determine the pH of any moisture present; a flow rate sensor to determine the flow of composition out of the container 12.
[0043] The electromotive head 1 14 may also be associated with a controller and/or a display, in the same manner as the electromotive device of the previous embodiment of the invention.
[0044] Finally, another aspect of the present invention provides a container 12 as a stand alone device which is adapted to be removably connected to a head portion 14 by a user.
[0045] For the purpose of this specification, the word "comprising" means "including but not limited to," and the word "comprises" has a corresponding meaning.
[0046] The above embodiments have been described by way of example only and modifications are possible within the scope of the claims that follow. In particular, it will be understood that variations described in relation to one embodiment (e.g. the electromotive device 10) can readily be applied to other embodiments (e.g. the electromotive head 1 14).
