Definitions
- the present invention relates to a rack for test tubes with screw caps intended for use in chemical, biochemical and similar laboratories, for manual work as well as in apparatuses working with a set of test tubes.
- Test tubes for various analyses in apparatuses may be provided with a machine- readable code (QR code, for example) on their side wall, for precise identification of the test tube or its contents.
- QR code machine- readable code
- a drawback of code reading on the side wall of the test tube is the impossibility of access to test tubes placed in the middle of multi-row sets of test tubes and, on the other hand, the problem with correct position of the test tube so that the code is accessible for the reading device.
- these test tubes have fully removable caps, there is a risk of exchange of the caps and contamination of the test tube content, as the caps are not labeled to indicate to which test tube they belong.
- Some containers for collecting samples are provided with a code also on the container lid, such as those described, for example, in patent documents US2017232437 or EP 0909584.
- the patent document EP1001845 describes a set of a rack and test tubes, wherein hinged caps of the test tubes are not attached to the test tube, however, they form a part of each position of the rack.
- the test tubes are inserted into the rack without the caps and closed with the rack lid.
- the holder for a screw cap adjacent to the opening for a test tube prevents possible exchange of caps and contamination of the test tubes. It thus allows the respective cap to be fixed in a precise position next to the test tube. The cap does not obstruct and cannot fall anywhere, get lost, etc. It is possible to use this embodiment for racks intended for manual work in laboratories as well as for racks with test tubes for placement to laboratory apparatuses, e.g. analytical devices, which may be applied, for example, on centrifuge microtubes in automatic apparatus for molecular diagnostics, e.g. using PCR.
- the object of the invention is to provide such position of the put aside caps that they may be easily identified by a reading device from above.
- the screw caps need to be placed each in the cap holder next to the test tube with the top side up, and thus the bottom side down, allowing the identification code, e.g. QR code, to be placed on the top surface of the caps, which is then easily read by a reading device placed or moving above the rack with the test tubes and is intended for identification next to the test tubes.
- Placing the screw cap top side up means that the screw cap has the top surface in the same position as the test tube closed by a screw cap, held upright with the bottom down and the opening up.
- the rack for test tubes with screw caps comprises two longitudinal edges formed by elevated storage areas of the rack, between which a lowered surface of the rack is arranged, having two parallel rows of openings for test tubes, along which cap holders are formed in the edges of the elevated storage surfaces of the rack.
- the said holders are preferably formed as recesses corresponding to or protruding from the outer dimension of the test tube cap.
- the recesses will preferably be at least semi-circular, i.e. with a semicircular plan view, namely in case of caps fitted into the test tube neck with a recess diameter equal to or greater than the inner diameter of the test tube neck as well as in case of caps fitted on the test tube neck with a recess diameter equal to or greater than the outer perimeter of the cap.
- the semicircular plan view of the cap holder has the diameter equal to the outer diameter of the screw cap.
- the recess must be formed in the area of the edge of the elevated area so that the round screw cap partially fits therein, thus may be slid from above or from a side of the said recess, wherein part of the cap will always protrude from the edge. It is also possible to form a deeper, rather U-shaped, recess, so that the caps do not protrude and fit entirely into the recess.
- the cap holders in a form of recesses may also be formed in the outer upper edges of the rack for test tubes, which is preferred especially in case of racks for test tubes with longitudinal elevated edges.
- Part of the rack for test tubes with elevated storage area may be preferably detachable from and attachable to the remaining portion of the rack by means of magnetic connection. Detachable elevated area facilitates cleaning of the rack.
- the elevated storage area for caps forms an integral part of the rack for test tubes.
- the openings for test tubes are arranged in a circle.
- the cap holders are formed as annular openings or recesses in the upper surface of the rack, with the diameter equal to the inner diameter of the test tube body or outer perimeter of the cap.
- the peripheral wall of the opening for test tube is provided with grooves in order for the test tube to engage with the corresponding groove.
- the advantage of the grooves represents easier opening of the test tube using one hand so that the test tube does not rotate in the rack opening.
- the above-mentioned need relates to test tubes with screw caps, when the cap is opened or closed by screw motion, not by snapping or tilting.
- the subject of the invention also includes a set comprising any of the above- described embodiments of the rack for test tubes with screw caps as well as the test tubes with screw caps, in case of which, in a preferred embodiment, the upper surface of the screw cap is provided with machine-readable code for identification of the particular test tube. Providing the code on the screw caps of test tubes allows reading of the code from above and ensures 100% accessibility of the reader to the code, allows reading of the test tube positions with their corresponding caps.
- FIG. 1 schematic illustration of the rack for test tubes with screw caps having longitudinal elevated edges
- An exemplary embodiment is a rack 1 for test tubes with screw caps 6 shown in Fig. 1 , having a rectangular profile, in which the edge storage areas 2 of the rack along the longer edges are elevated and the middle part is formed by a lowered area 3 of the rack.
- a lowered area 3 of the rack two rows of annular openings 4 for test tubes are provided, in which grooves are arranged along the peripheral walls of each opening 4 for test tubes so that the test tube 8 fits therein with its grooved surface in its upper part in order to prevent rotation of the test tube 8 during screwing of the cap 6.
- the test tubes 8 have the upper outer perimeter wider than the remaining portion of the body of the test tube 8, so that they do not fall through the opening 4 for test tubes.
- the test tubes 8 are attached by means of a loop 9 with the screw cap 6, so that is does not get lost.
- Recesses are formed in the edge of the elevated storage area 2 of the rack, representing the storage holders 5 for receiving a screw cap with the top side up and these are formed as nearly semi-circular holes with the diameter equal to the inner diameter of the test tubes 8 so that the screw caps 6 of the test tubes 8 fit into these holders 5 and do not slip.
- the upper part of the caps 6 is provided with a QR code for identification of the test tubes 8.
- Part of the rack 1 with the elevated area 2 is detachable from and attachable to the remaining portion of the rack 1 by means of magnetic connection.
- the elevated storage area 2 forms an integral part of the rack 1.
- the openings for test tubes are arranged in a circle and along them, around the outer or inner perimeter, holders for test tubes are arranged in the edge of the elevated storage area, in a form of U-shaped recess, wherein the width of the U-letter is equal to the outer diameter of the screw 6.
- the upper surface of screw caps 6 is provided with a QR code for identification of test tubes 8.
- test tubes 8 are not connected by means of a loop
- the holders 5 for caps are formed by annular openings adjacent to the openings for test tubes 8 and the circumferential part of the rack 1 is not elevated in comparison to the middle portion of the rack 1.
- the rack for test tubes with caps is intended for use in laboratories, for work on the laboratory table, as well as with laboratory devices, such as analytical devices.
