Abstract

The present invention relates to a television capable of sending content to a virtual reality headset, and a virtual reality headset adapted to operate with said television. In the television of the invention, virtual reality data is obtained separately from the television broadcast and is added to the images of this broadcast.

Description

A TELEVISION AND A VIRTUAL REALITY HEADSET ADAPTED TO BE USED WITH THE SAME
The present invention relates to a television and a virtual reality headset adapted to be used with the same.
Capabilities of televisions have been improving with the advances in technology. Initially developed to solely display television channels, televisions have been enabled over time to be connected to equipment such as image players, game consoles, satellite receivers and the like. Televisions are keeping up with ever increasing technological variety. For example, current televisions are enabled to connect to the Internet and play a media from a remote server. The number and variety of peripheral units with which televisions can communicate, are rapidly increasing. In order to enable communication with such peripheral units, televisions may be provided with many cable communication interfaces such as USB, VGA, HDMI, SCART, Compozite, Ethernet, etc., as well as wireless communication interfaces such as ZigBee and Wi-Fi.
Entertainment ambition of people drives development of new entertainment platforms. For instance, three-dimensional content which began with cinema movies, became displayable by domestic televisions. However, users are not content with viewing such content and wish to have a more integrated experience with the content. Accordingly, virtual reality headsets have been developed. A user wearing a virtual reality headset can personally determine the content he/she wishes to view by looking at a desired direction. However, since most TV broadcasts do not contain virtual reality data, users can only view but cannot control such content.
State of the art United States patent document no. US2016227267 mentions a system and a method for displaying content of set-top boxes by virtual reality headsets.
None of the state-of-the-art documents include a solution such as the one in the present invention.
The aim of the present invention is to realize a television capable of sending content to a virtual reality headset, and a virtual reality headset adapted to operate with said television.
The television capable of sending content to a virtual reality headset, comprises in its most basic form,
  • at least one tuner enabling receiving television broadcasts,
  • at least one communication unit enabling establishing connection with an external device, and
  • at least one control unit adapted to execute one of, a plurality of or all of the processes of reading the EPG information received at least by the tuner, obtaining virtual reality data in accordance with the EPG information, adding virtual reality data to the images provided by the tuner, and sending the virtual reality data added image to a virtual reality headset by means of the communication unit.
In its most basic form, the television capable of sending content to a virtual reality headset, comprises at least one tuner enabling receiving television broadcasts. The tuner is particularly suitable to receive DVB broadcasts. DVB broadcasts usually contain EPG information which provides details about the broadcast content. For example, let's assume that the current broadcast is a football match. In this case, the EPG information may contain facts about the sides and venue of said match. Even if the current broadcast would not contain virtual reality information, the control unit is capable of downloading virtual reality data related to the stadium of the match from the Internet by means of the communication unit by using the venue information provided by the EPG. The control unit can generate a combined image by adding said virtual reality data to the images provided by the tuner. The control unit can send this image provided by the tuner and the virtual reality data to a virtual reality headset by means of the communication unit.
Satellite broadcasts are sent via units referred to as transponders capable of containing a plurality of channels. Since a tuner can be simultaneously connected to only one transponder, if the television of the invention comprises a single tuner, the image desired to be sent to the virtual reality headset and the image desired to be viewed on the television screen should be on the same transponder. Since a transponder can contain a plurality of channels, the image on the television screen and the image sent to the virtual reality headset may be different but this may not be sufficient in all cases. Therefore, the television of the invention may comprise a plurality of tuners. By this, the image desired to be sent to the virtual reality headset and the image desired to be viewed on the television screen may be on separate transponders.
In an embodiment of the invention, the television of the invention receives EPG information but sends this information to the virtual reality headset without receiving any virtual reality data in accordance with said information. In this embodiment, the process of combining the image provided by the television with virtual reality data is performed by the virtual reality headset.
The virtual reality headset adapted to be used with the television of the invention, comprises in its most basic form,
  • at least one communication unit enabling establishing connection with an external device,
  • at least one screen enabling displaying the received images to a user, and
  • at least one control unit adapted to execute one of, a plurality of or all of the processes of receiving the images provided by at least the television by means of the communication unit, obtaining virtual reality data in accordance with the EPG information, adding virtual reality data to the images provided by the television and displaying these images to the user by means of the screen.
In its most basic form, the virtual reality headset adapted to be used with the television of the invention, comprises at least one communication unit enabling establishing connection with an external device. The external device may be a television to which the virtual reality is adapted to cooperate, or a remote server from which the headset can receive data via the Internet. The communication unit is capable of communicating with a plurality of devices. The control unit receives the images provided by the television by means of the communication unit. If the images provided by the television contain virtual reality data, the control unit can directly display these images on the screen. If the television does not provide virtual reality data along with images of a channel but provides only EPG data, the control unit can obtain virtual reality data from a remote server by means of the communication unit and can generate a combined image by adding virtual reality data to the images provided by the television. The control unit displays said combined image to the user by means of the screen.
