Description
Instrument For Treatment And Training Of Neuromuscular Disability Conditions
Field of Invention The present invention relates to an arrangement for treatment and training of neuromuscular disability conditions in general and particularly for treatment of patients with Stroke/Hemiplegia - leading to paralysis of one side of the face, arm, leg and body.
Background of the Invention
Typically, stroke causes a variety of disorders such as hemiplegia, loss of sensation on one side, deterioration of cognitive function etc. One of the aftermath of stroke is difficult and selective voluntary contraction activity of the muscle paralysis functional disability or an upper extremity hemiplegia. Typically the patients after brain stroke are left with high incidence of disability and functional dependence. For these patients, it is possible to minimize the functional disability with the help of a physical therapist. Reports, mentioning the effectiveness of conventional training and physiotherapy have not been very encouraging in terms of return of Upper extremity functional benefits with 19-85 % of patients not able to function as before the stroke even after 6 months of the episode. These results could partly be attributed to high cost of treatment and financial implications, lack of awareness of the benefits of exercise based training - hence poor attendance for sessions, poor quality of services - not based on evidence (due to lack of training/up gradation), and inadequate therapy dosage and duration, a lot of other social factors like age, gender, transportation/ accessibility etc. could be reasonably affecting the outcome.
In recent years, research is actively underway for the rehabilitation equipment for this purpose. Rehabilitation equipment intended to strengthen the patient's muscle by enabling a range of exercises to increase and enhance muscle strength. Various know instruments are available for training in rehabilitation center. However such instruments are costly, complicated, heavy and typically need an instructor / supervisor for enabling a patient to do correct exercise. For less costly alternatives, one may have to procure many different instruments for performing all exercises again increasing cost and complexity. Hence there is a need for an improved system and method for treatment and training of neuromuscular disability conditions.
Summary of the Invention
According to embodiments of the invention, an instrument for enabling treatment of neuromuscular conditions is disclosed. The disclosed instrument enables plurality of exercises for treatment of neuromuscular conditions particularly for treatment of patients with Stroke/Hemiplegia. The instrument includes a substantially flat base member having a bottom surface, a top surface and an arrangement in the center on the top surface along the width for optionally accommodating a mirror. The bottom surface of the base member may include a plurality of apertures for detachably accommodating a plurality of adjustable legs. At least one side of the base member may have a pair of pulleys attached thereto and at least one side rail along the side for moving an object from side to side direction. The instrument further includes a handle attached to the bottom surface through one or more resilient members and at least one rotator knob on the top surface of the base member. As illustrated, the instrument (100) may have at least one side rail (134) along the side for moving an object (136) from side to side direction. According to an embodiment, the object (136) is a ball. The sliding arrangement may enable bilateral arm function such as patient’s movements occurring at the wrist/ elbows / shoulder. The moving ball/target provides a real time feedback. The instrument (100) may further have at least one rotator knob (138) on the top surface of the base member. The rotator knob (138) may be provided for radial - ulnar deviation. The instrument (100) may further include a strap (140) provided on one side of the base member (102). The strap (140) may enable easy transportation of the instrument (100).
Figure 9 illustrates another partial view of the bottom surface (104) of the base member (102) according to an embodiment of the invention. As illustrated the instrument (100) may have a handle (142) attached to the bottom surface (104) through one or more resilient members (144). According to an exemplary embodiment resilient members (144) may be plurality of springs or any other stretchable material.
Figure 10 illustrates yet another partial view of the top surface (106) of the base member (102) according to an embodiment of the invention. As illustrated the instrument (100) may further includes an elevated tapering edge (146) along a side of the base member (102) for weight bearing and facilitating hand opening.
According to embodiments of the invention disclosed instrument (100) has been specifically designed for use in neuromuscular conditions affecting strength of the upper limb particularly for patients with Stroke/ Hemiplegia - leading to paralysis of one side of the face, arm, leg and body (trunk) etc. The illustrated instrument (100) may enhance the quantity of rehabilitation training of the upper limb (UL). The illustrated instrument may enable perform certain exercises advised by the physiotherapist as part of the treatment for Stroke/Hemiplegia patient. According to embodiments of the invention, the disclosed instrument may enable patient to perform these exercises on their own with the help of instructions provided. Features such as guide lines (112)
enable feedback on the progress to the patients. The instrument (100) is foldable and light weight about 2 kg and can be carried with a strap (140). The illustrated design of the board is low cost, does not require electricity, easy to carry, understandable, does not require literacy, does not require therapist, one on one supervision, can be utilized for multiple functions simultaneously, increase repetitions, hence training effect, can be used as a home exercise (in familiar environments) and help reduce burden on social framework.
As will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, the present invention may easily be produced in other specific forms without departing from its essential characteristics. The present embodiments is, therefore, to be considered as merely illustrative and not restrictive, the scope of
the invention being indicated by the claims rather than the foregoing description, and all changes which come within therefore intended to be embraced therein.
