Description

TREE SASH
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an ornamental decorative sash for attaching to a Christmas tree or other tree or tree-like object. The sash is proportionally designed and constructed to spirally attach to and wrap around the tree in an ascending, or alternatively descending, and decorative manner. The sash is intended to be used primarily on its own to replace conventional Christmas tree ornaments and decorations such as balls, bells, tinsel, ribbons, and garland, but can in alternative embodiments be used in conjunction with such conventional ornaments and decorations. The sash provides a convenient and decorative means to quickly, completely, and effortlessly decorate a Christmas tree.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Christmas is a widely celebrated holiday in the United States and many other countries of the world. It is increasingly becoming a cultural festival as well. One of the time-honored traditions of Christmas is the pleasure of setting up and decorating a tree for individuals and families. In addition to families, commercial businesses, restaurants and retail stores often want to have a decorated tree as part of their participation in the holiday because of its appeal to consumers. A tree sash is ideal for this purpose because of its ease, efficiency and expedience.
Many people are living in very busy times all year long, and this sense of rush or urgency is often felt most intensely during the Christmas holiday season. Also, many individuals have numerous responsibilities related to work, family and community with more to-do items, more e-mails, more choices in activities and places to spend our time, and more technological distractions from wearables to steady information streams. This all is reflected by the frequent utterances we hear from family, friends, co-workers and neighbors expressing how busy they are. There are hundreds of productivity apps available to help people maximize their time and get more done in less-time while staying organized. Yet, there are few new ways to create more time available for a less stressful and more joyful Christmas season. An innovation that saves time as Christmas approaches is needed as a significant way to make decorating for the holidays more enjoyable, less stressful, easier to prepare for, more convenient and more relaxing for everyone, while maintaining the feeling of connecting to time-honored traditions and creating new ones.
Innovations in Christmas decorations include artificial Christmas trees and electric and battery powered lights. Artificial Christmas trees go back to at (east the 1800s in the form of trees constructed from feathers. In the 1900s with the development of various polymeric materials, artificial Christmas trees became increasingly more life-like, or alternatively less-so, with trees produced in non-naturally occurring colors such as pink and blue. Prior to the development of electric and battery powered lights, consumers often relied on decorating Christmas trees with lighted candles, which represented a significant fire hazard. Furthermore, early electric Christmas lights were often large and heavy and were also a serious fire hazard and tended to dry out the Christmas tree because of the large amount of heat they generated. The development of miniature Christmas tree lights were a considerable improvement, because they did not generate dangerous amounts of heat. Furthermore, continuous improvements have led to relatively cool, yet bright LED Christmas tree lights.
Despite these improvements, there have been far fewer innovations in Christmas tree decorations, particularly decorations that make decorating a Christmas tree a more efficient and enjoyable task. Consumers are generally still resorting to conventional ornaments and decorations such as balls, bells, tinsel, ribbons, and garland. However, decorating a tree with these ornaments and decorations can be time consuming. Furthermore, there is the consideration of then having to remove and store them again once the Christmas tree is taken down
Thus, a need exists for an improved and convenient means to decorate a Christmas tree. In particular, a need exists for a tasteful and decorative Christmas tree decoration that is convenient to use and that can provide an enjoyable means to establish a new holiday tradition. The proportionally tapered sash, adaptable to both real and artificial trees, wraps in a nimble spiral and can be attached to the branches by fasteners. The sash makes tree decorating less complicated, yet leaves room for consumers who find it essential to add personal touches. Furthermore, the sash can be used on a lighted tree which has already been decorated by lights. By simplifying the entire process of decorating a tree to one-step, this easy-to-use, themed decoration is all one needs to have a festive tree as the centerpiece of a room. Disclosed in the present invention is a novel and useful sash decoration for meeting these needs.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates, in certain embodiments, to a new and improved type of Christmas tree decoration. It is an objective of this invention to provide an aesthetically attractive, all-inclusive Christmas tree decoration without the shortcomings associated with traditional decorations such as with multiple ornaments and/or garland and tinsel. The present invention saves the need to haul out multiple boxes of Christmas tree decorations, unpack, unwrap, sort, and hang the items.
The present invention relates to a decorative tree sash, or ribbon, for attaching to a Christmas tree or other tree or tree-like object. The sash is designed to spirally attach to and wrap around the tree in an ascending, or alternatively descending, and decorative manner. The sash is intended to be used primarily on its own to replace conventional Christmas tree ornaments and decorations such as balls, bells, tinsel, ribbons, and garland. In alternative embodiments the sash can be used in conjunction with such conventional ornaments and decorations. The sash provides a convenient and decorative means to quickly and conveniently decorate a Christmas tree in a modern way. Although the sash alone festively transforms a tree, in further embodiments, ornaments, which can be supplied as part of a kit or package with the sash of the present invention, or the purchaser’s own can customize the sash and can be hung from loops on the sash trim in some embodiments or upon exposed branches of the tree. There are novel sash themes that offer a fresh new look for a tree while other embodiments (elements) embrace more familiar and traditional themes. The sash can simplify the entire process of decorating a Christmas tree from purchase of the sash, to set-up, break-down, and store- away.

Decorative Sash
The decorative sash, i.e. tree-sash or ribbon, of the present invention helps to relieve some of the time-related stresses and other difficulties associated with putting-up a Christmas tree. Current technology does not offer an all-inclusive highly stylized, one- piece, care-free and quick way to decorate a tree. By simplifying the entire process to one-step, this user-friendly Christmas decoration is all a consumer needs to have a festive tree. Simply take a Christmas tree in the stand, add the pre-decorated tree-sash, wrap it around, attach, and done.
The consumer has a one-step, beautifully themed decoration displayed on a tree. This innovation is themed and tapered and it securely hugs the tree while ascending to the crown of the tree in a distinctive spiral like manner, while soon swinging back around and down to the front of the tree presenting a view of the decorated apex as it lies perpendicularly high above the floor. Alternatively, the sash can descend from the crown of the tree. The sash of the present invention is a complete embellishment for a tree that is convenient, with a quick, one-step attachment, offering a distinctive change to Christmas tree decorating both in theme and style. It promotes festivity with ease and convenience as a modern alternative that can thus provide an enjoyable means to establish a new holiday tradition and give the consumer more time to do what they want to do.
Because“the most wonderful time of the year”, for some, can be the busiest time of year too, this innovation saves time and energy and replaces the need for decorating with standard balls, bells, tinsel, ribbons, and garland, while reducing the number of storage boxes to one. From purchase, to set-up and break-down, and storage, a festively decorated, themed tree-sash provides individuals and families with ease and convenience and gives them more precious time (for enjoying whatever they desire, for celebration). Although, the tree-sash is designed as a stand-alone eye-catching convenient decoration that spirals around a tree while sparkling with ornamentation, there are some consumers who may not want to give up their treasured or home-crafted ornaments, and they do not have to with the present invention. Such consumers can use the sash in conjunction with conventional ornaments and decorations, but they do not need them in order to have a completely decorated tree. For those who want the change of a fresh new look without all the work, the sash of the present invention is an option for them.
Furthermore, many businesses and noncommercial entities partake in holiday decorating in a secular or non-secular manner to be part of it and to spread festive cheer. These entities too can create a cheerful, holiday atmosphere by decorating their Christmas trees with the tree sash of the present invention. By using the tree sash of the present invention, these entities eliminate the need to expend employee and personnel time to decorate a tree and increase the positive feelings of those who come to their places of business. Also, the sash of the present invention does not require a great deal of valuable storage space when stored away for the remainder of the year. An ornate non-secular or secular themed tree-sash can create a positive, merry feeling for both those who celebrate Christmas religiously and for those who celebrate Christmas culturally, whether in homes or places of business.
Largely, for the consumer’s benefit, convenience abounds with the sash of the present invention. There is no more hauling out numerous storage boxes with reams of garlands or ribbons or the unwrapping of scores of ornaments, finding hooks, and reaching everywhere to hang many ornaments on the tree. There is no repacking or labeling of all those accoutrements or needing to organize all the boxes to put back into storage. There would be no need to accommodate several storage boxes of ornaments. The sash of the present invention is durable, flexible and easily folded into one sweater sized box taking up little space or similarly wound onto a comparably sized spool. The sash of the present invention can fit inside a small closet in a neat, compact way. There is no need for many trips to a cellar, basement, garage, attic, or storage unit. The sash of the present invention is easy to purchase, easy to use, and easy to store. For those who have more than one tree, the sash of the present invention can provide a time-saving aesthetically pleasing variation. Because decorating needs and styles can change over time, the sash of the present invention is useful for those consumers who are just starting out and decorating their first tree. The sash of the present invention eliminates the need for buying and collecting ornaments that may not be affordable or desirable at a later date. Conversely, consumers who are scaling down as they grow older, who just do not want all the fuss, or cannot do all the work, can still have a beautiful tree for their celebrations. Senior folks can have an adorned tree ready for grandchildren to add their handcrafted ornaments. In addition, for people who live in apartments or small quarters who do not have the storage space for a large number of decorations, all they need is a sash of the present invention to have an aesthetically pleasing, holiday tree to join in on the holiday spirit. The sash of the present invention gives all ages of people who want to decorate a tree for the Christmas holiday a convenient way to achieve a fully decorated lighted tree by purchasing one item while having the variability of change and a unique look that is easy to use they and can be customized yearly.
The sash of the present invention is not an ordinary sash or ornament, nor is it a supplemental decorative garland or ribbon. This is a new and unique article of manufacture that stands-out and is clearly suited for embellishing the entire tree on its own. It is the centerpiece of an illuminated tree, a heterogeneous assortment of stylized themes, colors and iconic symbols that come to life. It does not depend on anything else. The sash of the present invention replaces the need for traditional garlands, ribbons and ornaments and simultaneously replaces the need for numerous ornaments. Common recommendations for decorating a standard 8-foot tree include using 150-200 ornaments and 80 feet of garland. The sash of the present invention makes tree decorating uncomplicated with as little effort as one wishes. The sash is an all-encompassing decoration that is the centerpiece of the Christmas tree that easily fastens to a tree in a fraction of the time it takes to unpack or unwrap and hang ornaments. The sash of the present invention is a thoughtfully designed once-piece, highly festooned, fabric sash that surrounds a tree creating a beautiful path for the eye to follow. A complementary tree topper to match the themed sash of the present invention can be added as a further embellishment to crown the tree. Alternatively, a tree topper can be incorporated into the sash, such that the sash can terminate in a tree topper. Stabilizers
Stabilizers such as stiffening wire or flexible plastic materials represent a potential for manipulating the fabric into a curving or flowing shape, if preferred by the user. Depending on type of material selected in future modifications for the tree sash, a stabilizer may be utilized to stiffen or strengthen a fabric. They can be semi-rigid or liquid.
Materials for the Sash and Manufacturing
The sash can comprise a material selected from satin, silk, jute, burlap, denim, corduroy, cotton, linen, wool, polyester, dacron, nylon, bamboo-based nylon, polypropylene, canvas, neoprene, suede, leather, velvet, recycled materials including polyester, plastic, hemp, Tencel, metallic fibers such as lame, yarns and blends thereof. The material can be flame resistant or fire retardant.
The sash is securely disposed of woven or non-woven fabric and comprising additional ornamental embodiments of varying themes, reflective and non-reflective materials, embroidered or sequins, scenes, toys, trinkets, photo frames, printed photos, indicia in varying textures, colors, shapes, and sizes. These affixed, woven or stitched decorative members or scenes are thoughtfully designed to broadly appeal to individuals and generate a tree sash motif that reflects various subject themes, e.g. a coastal scene, or the merry holiday. The sash can have both solid and open (such as burlap or gauze) layers. One possible fabric assemblage of the tree-sash is an open burlap cloth with a decorative and reflective additional layer of gold mesh or other material to be determined secured to the burlap by broad range of fastening including a machine sewn hem or adhesive. Another example of fabric assemblage is the use of gold metallic linen fabric with a cotton lining, with heat-set, sewn or glued decorative 3-dimensional elements and trim. The sash in other embodiments can be manufactured by laser cutting the sash material in an effort to create a design as well as cut to the desired shape and size.
The sash securely disposed of said woven or non-woven fabric, pleated or smooth, and said optional ornamental members of varying themes, reflective and non-reflective materials, shapes, depths, sizes and colors, can further comprise an electrical assembly for adding lights (on the outside surface, or inside surface), lighted ornaments, a trailing string of lights (twinkling segments or continuous feed), or a lighted topper attached near to the one end of the ornament. LED lights optionally can stem from an internal source with an electrical assembly. Alternatively, a pocket sewn on three sides can accommodate external source lights such as a portable battery pack for commonly sold low-voltage copper fairy lights or similar low voltage string lights.
A light string can be threaded though the materials, wrapped around the tree sash, or periodically tacked onto the display surface, or alternatively further comprising a pocket sewn into the underside to accommodate an external source of lights such as a battery pack for commonly sold copper string lights.
Length
The length of the material being greater than the height of the tree such that the sash extends beyond the top (peak) of the tree when lying straight and planar. The length should be approximately two and a half times as long as the height of the tree (whether miniature, medium, or large).
Variable Length Sashes and Extenders
In other embodiments the sash is constructed not as a single article, but instead comprises two or more detachable segments. This type of sash allows for the customization of the sash to provide various desired lengths. This is an extendable sash. For example, such a sash can be provided as a baseline/base/foundation-piece or starting length sash that is provided in two segments or sections, such as a starting segment 1A and a terminal segment 1C, with a fastening (i.e. connecting) means for the two parts, such as hooks, straps, fasteners, snaps, or Velcro. The two parts of the sash can be connected together to form a single full-length sash article. Alternatively, two or more insert segments or sections of sash 1 B of varying lengths can be inserted between the two original sash pieces to construct a longer sash. It is important that the insert segments comprise the appropriate and complementary fastening means for connecting to the starting segment 1A and the terminal segment 1C and any additional insert segments 1 B. It is also important that the insert segments 1 B are of the appropriate width and have essentially parallel longitudinal edges so that they are of the correct width to smoothly attach to each other and to the terminal edge 110g of the starting segment 1A and the starting edge 110a” of the terminal segment 1C. In this manner the consumer can construct a sash of desired length by inserting and connecting together one or more insert segments between the segments of the baseline, starting length sash. See FIG. 6.
Ornamentation
Optional ornamentation can be permanently attached or removably attached to the sash. The ornamentation is generally attached to the outside facing surface. Without limitation, the ornaments can be constructed of reflective or non-reflective materials in a broad group including plastic, wood, glass, fabrics, rubber, resin, porcelain, pearls, heat- set gems, velvet, burlap, cotton, silk, metals, wool, and indicia.
The sash can further comprise a lighting means. For example, the sash can comprise lighting with a power cord or external source such as a battery pack. The lighting feature can be located on the outside surface, the inside surface, or inside two or more layers of the sash. The lighting can include lighted ornaments, a trailing string of lights, twinkling segments or a continuous feed, hanging elements, or a lighted topper attached near the apex. LED or incandescent lights optionally can stem from an internal source with an electrical assembly. An alternative can comprise optional electrical wiring at each longitudinal end for possible lights, lighted elements and or a lighted tree topper.

Ornamental aspects can be included, such as a bell, tassel, or other ornamentation, at the apex or tip of the sash that can in some embodiments and also function as a fastening means. A jingle bell is a cheerful harbinger of the coming of the Christmas season and in one embodiment echoes the familiar ring of the holiday while punctuating the tree-sash, which can be a functional element when used as fastening component.
Attachment means
Attachment means, such as hooks, loops, etc. The method wherein the simple step of applying the sash includes connecting the sash to a tree branch by a fastener. As such, the fastening device might extend outwardly and attach to a branch. It can attach to a branch as a highly decorative functional element such as an elaborate bow comprised of complementary material that is tied or hooked. Alternatively fastening to a branch can be accomplished so that it is not very visible by moving the attachment means to underside of the display surface so that its presence is occluded by the sash fasteners from a broad group may include: the topper, loops, hooks, shanks, adhesive fasteners, clasping devices, mechanical threaded fasteners, wire, and the like.
Tree Topper
Alternatively, to increase the decoration's visual appeal and convenience a tree topper can be added to sit atop the peak of the tree. The tree topper is a complementary feature of design that in one modification can be illuminated through the use of electrical components within the sash or plugged into a strand of lights. The topper can function as a focal point and a natural resting place for the eye to take it all in.
In further embodiments the topper can be relied upon as a means of attachment for the sash. For example, the topper can comprise a hook or semi-open to serve as a guide for the terminus or apex of the sash to pass through and descend to the front of the tree where completes its journey for an attractive finish and completion of the design.
Storage
When placed on a flat surface (for shipping or storage), the three-dimensional decoration consumes a minimum of space in that it rests substantially flat and can be conveniently folded into a convenient storage box. The storage boxes can be conventionally box-shaped, i.e. rectangular, including a square cube, with a lid or flaps, or can be round or oval such as a hat box shape with a lid. When wound around a spool such as with a round box, the sash attains a different position and still reduces storage needs.
Shape of the Sash
The sash of the present invention comprises (or defines in terms of its shape and orientation) a substantially flat elongated element 100 (i.e. exists as a substantially flat elongated element) prior to it being spirally attached to a tree or tree-like (conical) object such as a Christmas tree. In this orientation the sash is essentially in or defines a single 2-dimensional plane.
The sash of the present invention defines a spiral (or conical like helix), curved, or inverted J-shaped object when attached to and wrapped around a tree or tree-like (conical) object. When the sash is attached to and wrapped around a tree or tree-like (conical) object, the sash is essentially in or defines a spiral in 3-dimensional space. Furthermore, the sash can define a right-handed spiral or left-handed spiral (or conical helix) when attached to a tree or treelike (conical) object. The“handedness” of the spiral will depend on the perspective of the user or viewer and whether the sash is observed as ascending or descending the tree or tree-like object. A convention for defining handedness is as follows: In mathematics, physics, and engineering the right-hand rule is a common reference for understanding orientation conventions for vectors in three dimensions, known to one of ordinary skill in the art. The handedness referred to herein follows the convention of the right-hand rule.
A spiral or helix is a circular curve that advances along the z-axis while rotating in the x-y plane. Helices are either right- or left-handed and non-superimposable mirror images of each other. For example, FIGs. 3 and 4 herein illustrate an ascending right- handed spiral or helix orientation of the sash of the current invention when the top of the Christmas tree 201 is taken for reference as pointing in the positive direction of a z-axis.
Kits
The sash of the present invention can be incorporated into a kit. The kit can comprise:
1 . a tree-sash (lighted or not)
2. an optional tree topper (lighted or not)
3. coordinating conventional ornaments (for those that still want to use the invention in conjunction with their treasured ornaments)
