Description of Embodiments
[0013]A desktop personalization apparatus and associated methods [Fig.1 ] are described. This apparatus is able to personalize data and information on plastic cards such as bank cards, credit cards etc. All parts of the apparatus are located in a desktop box [15]. In general, the apparatus comprises of the personalization line and control boards besides fan and carbon active filters [12]. The personalization line consists of several modules which each of them has its special role in personalization process. Generally the name of modules of the personalization line can be listed as follows : card cartridges [1 ], card dispenser [2], reject box [3], laser marking module [5], duplexer module [7], OCR scanning system or Image processing system, card reader/writer module [8].
[0014] Plastic cards are stored in one, two or more card cartridges [1 ] at one end of personalization line. Actually this is the start point of process. Card cartridges are separable from personalization line, so because of the existence of at least one card cartridge at each time, the task of the apparatus can be continued unceasingly. Also capacity of each card cartridge is changeable between 100 cards to 1500 cards by adding or removing parts to or from cartridges.
[0015] Reject box [3] is a reservoir for defective cards which are recognized as defective cards before las er m arki ng proce s s or after data writi ng proces s .
[0016] Card dispenser [2] is a module that has the task of distributing card from card cartridges to the laser marking area. It is possible to expand this module based on the number of card cartridges and also it is possible to program it in such a way to choose different card from different card cartridges in different patterns. It means that the user can set a program for the apparatus for example to choose the first card from the card cartridge No. 1 and personalize an bank card, then choose a card from card cartridge No. 2 and personalize gift card and then choose a card from card cartridge No. 3 and personalize credit card and start this process again.
[0017] Before delivering the cards to the card holder [6] under laser marking modu le
[5] and engrave personal information, all contact and non -contact chips and magnetic stripe of a card will be verified by a writer/reader module [4]. This step is done to prevent defect card to be sent to the next step. The said module write a code on each contact and non-contact chips and magnetic stripe and then read the written code and compare it with the source. If written code and read code wasn't the same, it means there is something wrong with the card and the card will be sent to the reject box. If the number of wrong cards was more than usual, then alarm system will run and a warning message will be shown on the front monitor. Also the continuation of the process stops until the problem solved by the user. The number of wrong cards which causes the activation of alarm system is adjustable in the software.
[0018] When the verification of a card was confirmed, it would be sent into a card holder [6] to be kept fix and the engraving operation starts by the laser marking module. It is very essential to keep the card [16] completely fixed and straight during the engraving process because any small movement or imbalance causes some problems in the process of engraving information. The card holder comprised of two vertical plates [17] which are located at a certain distance of each other and the edge of the plastic card can move through a hollow path [20] which is slotted on the same height of each plate. In order to move the card between two vertical plates eight rollers [18,19] have been designed which are placed along of the edge of the cards, four at the top [18] and four at the bottom [19] of plastic card that means two by two keep and move the card. Only the bottom rollers are driven by an electrical motor and the edge of the card is moved between each two pair of rollers. Exact and fixed position of a card will be adjusted by an optical sensor and when the card placed at the correct position the said four pair of rollers would keep the card firmly until the engraving operation is done. The said card holder is further able to rotate around both perpendicular horizontal axis that means the traveling path and its perpendicular path. This possibility is necessary in personalizing ID cards using "Multiple Laser lmage"technology.
[0019] The laser light is produced at the laser source [1 1 ] and will be sent to laser head [13] which its task is gathering and concentrating laser light and conducting it to laser marking module [5]. The laser marking module [5] engrave personal information on the plastic card. Because of the designed control system and the range of adjustable parameters for laser marking module, the said apparatus doesn't need necessarily the non-transparent substance layer for printing information on the plasticcards.
[0020] When it's needed, the other side of the card can be engraved using the laser marking module again. For this purpose, duplexer module [7] is designed after the laser marking module which its task is to flip the card by 180 degree and resend itinto the card holderagain to be engraved on the back.
[0021 ]Two power supplies [9&10] supply the required power of the apparatus. The output voltage of these power supplies is 5V-24 V.
[0022] A fan and a carbon active filter [12] are installed in the output way of air circulation to cool equipment and also to filter micro particles and to prevent the release of pollutants in the environment.
[0023]This invention takes advantage of laser technology to engrave information on the plastic cards. The life of this device is much more than ribbon types because of the life time of laser marking module which is able to engrave more than five million bank cards. Therefore there is no need for regular change of ribbon cartridges. This apparatus connect to personal computers via USB port or wireless connection and its driver can run it on various operating systems. It is also possible to use customable fonts and also standard fonts for engraved information.
