Description

Method and interface for the adaptive creation of multimedia playlists.
The present invention concerns a method and interface for the adaptive creation of multimedia playlists.
More specifically, the invention aims the adaptive creation of multimedia playlists that may contain music tracks as well as images, videos, films and TV programs, and that use software apps, streaming services such as Apple Music,
Spotify, Deezer for music files, online photo collections or video collections such as YouTube or websites and libraries of multimedia files on data carriers, servers or via the Internet.
If we take streaming services for music as an example, it is known that streaming services offer music tracks online. It is also known that such streaming services allow the user to create a list of selected songs and store them online or offline, where this playlist can be played at any time and where the streaming service or software app provides the content in an order and the content is played in this order via a multimedia player.
A single user has several playlists available, each of which is suitable for specific occasions or user preferences, and he can save them in a library of playlists, from which the user can select the desired playlist that he considers most suitable for the current occasion How can a user select a playlist that is appropriate for a particular occasion or purpose? He can use the name in text form of the respective playlists or the metadata that have already been added by the streaming service to each playlist or songs in this playlist. Song metadata are for example, for each song, the title of the song, the orchestra or the name of the performer, the name of the composer, the name of the album from which the song comes, the track number in the album, the year of release, the music genre, the playing time of the song, and so on.
By specifying the desired personal choice in a search, the streaming service can propose a list of songs or playlists that meet the needs of the user to a greater or lesser extent .
EP 2 608 076 A2 describes a solution for dynamically adjusting an active playlist based on reviewing features of a single song from the original playlist that is currently being played, but only a single feature such as for example tempo or mood. It does not allow multi-genre or multi subgenre choices, nor combinations of features, nor the exclusion of features or feature combinations. The result can be compared to other users, but no common settings of multiple users can be configured together.
JP 20020090800 describes a solution for selectively omitting songs based on one or several metadata from the selected playlist. Thus, for example undesired genres can be check-marked in advance in a computer interface. These genres will then be excluded from the suggested playlist.
US 7247786 B2 describes a device for selecting songs that also takes into account personal information and wishes of the requester. The user is asked to enter his age and gender, but also to add a mood indicator for each song in a basic playlist, selected for example from "rhythmic", "quiet", "clear", "sad", "comforting", "lonely". In a later selection from the basic playlist, to which these additional meta data have been added, he can use this and limit the selection to, for example, "quiet" music tracks.
US 2009240355 A1 describes an interface where several users are offered their own playlist in the form of a sector in a pie chart, each playlist forming a sector in the pie. A subsequent playlist is randomly chosen here by randomly rotating the pie around its centre such as a wheel of fortune, where the winner is randomly selected and the winning sector becomes the next playlist and now belongs to another user.
US 2016357863 A1 describes a method for automatically generating several playlists from a basic collection, using different selection criteria from the metadata of the songs and assigning a score to each of these playlists by means of additional criteria. From these playlists, a subset of eligible playlists is selected based on their scores. From this subset of playlists, a final playlist is formed, observing a number of rules. US 9436756 B2 describes a method and a system for dynamically generating a playlist of media files based on the user' s mood, which is entered by the user or measured by means of sensors.
The songs in a basic collection are marked with an emotion label and are also associated with a weighing factor for this emotion label by a label assignment module in a computer system. Examples of emotion labels are "happy", "unhappy", "patriotic", "excited", "motivating", "romantic", and so on. Finally, a playlist-generating module in the computer system dynamically generates a playlist based on the user' s mood as it is promptly entered or promptly measured by sensors.
A disadvantage of this system for dynamically generating a playlist is that only one parameter, namely the user's mood, is used to generate a new playlist.
Streaming services such as Spotify, Deezer or Apple Music provide pre-programmed playlists, from which a user can select the most desired one in situ by using the supplied metadata or name in the form of text attached to each playlist. To that end, the user can use a number of criteria such as music genre or a mood for which the playlist is suitable.
A disadvantage of these pre-programmed playlists is that they do not allow the user to use an adjustable weighing of several selection criteria, to compose a completely new playlist in situ and in real time, thus limiting the user to the use of pre-programmed playlists in situ.
The present invention aims to remedy the above and other disadvantages by providing a method for dynamically creating new playlists in situ and in real time, where the user can enter several selection criteria and weighing percentages through an interface, including a number of selection criteria based on the metadata provided by a streaming service or available in a library, including at least: one or several preferred time periods in which the songs were released; one or several genres and subgenres of music with their adjustable weighing factor; one or several genres or subgenres to be excluded and also including one or several selection criteria based on extra metadata added to each song or song reference or available in a library.
The method according to the invention consists of at least the following steps, to be completed by each user of a computer-controlled multimedia file display system via an interface on or connected to the display system:
- selecting songs or song references on the basis of the metadata made available by a streaming service, or in libraries on a data carrier, a server or on the Internet;
- storing these songs or song references in a library of songs or song references on the computer-controlled display system or library on data carriers, servers or the Internet ; - using the computer-controlled display system as an active user via the interface of the computer-controlled display system;
- creating a playlist for the current preference of the active user;
- promptly intervening in the playlist being played by dynamically generating, in situ and in real time, a new playlist to respond to the promptly changed preference of the active user or users, by means of the interface of the computer-controlled display system on which the user modifies and enters a number of selection criteria and weighing percentages based on metadata of the songs, but also enters one or several selection criteria based on additional metadata of the songs. promptly generating a new playlist by entering instructions for dynamically creating a new playlist via the interface to the computer-controlled display system;
- having the computer-controlled display system taken over by another active user at a desired or planned moment.
- creating one or several playlists or playlist references based on the metadata of songs or song references made available by a streaming service on a data carrier, a server or on the Internet by processing the active user settings of several active users as combined input. The interface for dynamically creating new playlists in situ and in real time using the above method includes at least the following control keys:
- two or more genre selection keys, each subdivided into two or more subgenres, whereby a desired weighing percentage between 0 and 100 can be set for each genre and each subgenre;
- two or more selection keys for genres to be excluded;
- two or more selection keys to set one or more historical release periods for the songs from which the desired songs are to be selected, and a desired weighing percentage for each release period; one or more selection keys to set the preferred performers or composers of the songs from which the desired songs are to be selected, and a desired weighing percentage for each performer or composer;
- one decision key that starts the dynamic creation of a new playlist in situ and in real time, based on the currently adjusted selection keys;
- one key to reset the settings of the selection keys and weighing percentages to an initial default value;
- one graphic user interface that represents users of the computerized display system and shows which active user or users is/are currently controlling the computerized display system and which can be used to set up another user or set him up as an active user.
The user interface also provides keys for adding or removing a currently playing playlist to or from a user' s personal playlist library, where the user can be identified by simultaneously pressing his sector in the graphical user interface where users are represented.
The interface is preferably an interface with an interactive computer touch screen, which may or may not be part of the computerized display system with which the user can use touch sliders and digital control keys to set the desired selection criteria and weighing percentages. The touch screen can be the screen of a smartphone, a tablet or another computer.
The interface can also be an interface with mechanical control buttons and sliders, allowing the user to set the desired selection criteria.
In order to better explain the characteristics of the invention, the following preferred embodiment of the method and interface for the dynamic creation of new playlists according to the invention is described as an example only without being limitative in any way, with reference to the accompanying figures, where: figure 1 shows a digital interface according to the invention, schematically and in front view; figure 2 schematically represents a graphical user interface connected to an interface according to the invention;
figure 3 schematically represents a flow diagram of the data flow through the computer-controlled display installation .
Figure 1 shows a digital interface 1 on a computerized display system for playlists. The digital interface includes a touch screen 2, which is part of or connected to a computerized display system for playlists. The touch screen 2 contains at least two selection keys 3, 4, 5 for genres, each subdivided into at least two subgenres 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, where for each genre and each subgenre a desired weighing percentage can be set by means of a digital touch key by broadening or narrowing this key; at least one selection key 28, 29, 30, 31 for setting preferred performers or composers of the songs and a digital touch button 33 with which the desired weighing percentage can be set.
Weighing percentages can be set by broadening or narrowing the touch key.
In addition, the interface 1 contains one decision button 35 which starts the dynamic creation of a new playlist in situ and in real-time based on the currently adjusted selection keys, and also one key 36 to save the newly generated playlist in the library of the active user, and one key 37 to delete this newly generated playlist, and also one key 38 to reset the settings of the selection keys and weighing percentages to an initial default value.
Figure 2 shows a follow-up screen of the digital interface, on which there are at least two selection keys 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 for music genres, to be excluded with key 20; at least two selection keys 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 for setting one or more historical release periods for the songs from which the desired songs are to be selected, and a key 27 with which the selected weighing percentage between 0 and 100 can be set for each release period;
In addition, the interface 1 contains one graphical user interface 40 in which users of the computerized display system are represented as sectors, which shows which active user or users 41 is or are currently controlling the computerized display system and by means of which another user can be set up. In the case of several active users, the settings of all active users are taken into account.
Finally, the interface contains a touch key 32 to indicate the background noise in the room by selecting "quiet", "busy", "becoming busier", "closing time", so that the computerized display system can take this into account when creating a new playlist.
The interface is also equipped with a touch key 42 to add the currently playing playlist to a personal selection and another touch key 43 to remove the currently playing playlist from a personal selection, where the user who requests these actions identifies himself by simultaneously touching his sector 41 in the graphical user interface 40.
The interface also features a touch key 44 which replaces the currently playing playlist by an alternative playlist.
Figure 3 shows a flowchart 46 of the data flow through a computer-controlled display installation for music tracks, equipped with an interface 1 according to the invention for the dynamic creation of new playlists in situ and in real time, where the user can enter several selection criteria and weighing percentages by means of this interface.
The computer-controlled display installation contains a registration or login module 34 to add current users or to enable new users to log in.
The computer-controlled display installation contains an import module 47 which can import songs or song references from a data carrier, external library or cloud streaming service 48 and store these together with the supplied metadata in a library of songs or song references 49.
The computer-controlled display installation contains an extra metadata module 50 that can be used to add extra metadata to the metadata that each song or song reference already carries in the library of songs or song references 49.
The library of songs or song references 49 with metadata and extra metadata 50 is now processed by using user input via the selection module 51 for fine adjustment, while the user enters his selection criteria in the interface 1 according to the invention, not only on the basis of the supplied metadata but also on the basis of added extra metadata .
The method will select songs or song references from the library of songs or song references on the basis of the inputted selection criteria and calculate a score 52 for each song or song reference and add this score to each selected song, after which the songs or song references will be sorted based on the highest to lowest score in a score list 53.
This score list 53 is not yet exported to the computer- controlled display installation because there may still be unacceptable defects in the list such as playing the same song twice or two consecutive songs of the same performer, or other undesirable effects that are filtered out by means of a built-in playlist creator according to interface and method 54 by means of built-in rules, so that sufficient variety in the sequence of the songs is ensured, as well as that the user input via the selection module 51 will be respected .
The result is a playlist data module 55 from which can be drawn to dynamically generate a new playlist 56 in situ and in real-time, which is delivered via an export module 57 to a computer-controlled display installation 58 so as to play the new playlist on the display installation 58 immediately or at the desired time. The operation of an interface for dynamically creating new playlists in situ and in real-time according to the invention can be described as follows.
Starting from a situation in a party hall, for example, where a computerized display installation provides music, which is controlled by one particular user of the installation and who plays a playlist of pre-selected songs from a streaming service, there is an instant change of circumstances in the party hall, as a result of which the current playlist is no longer suitable for the new situation .
An instant change may be an abrupt change of audience or the start of a certain celebration or the imminent closure of the hall at the end of the evening, and so on, whereby the mood in the party hall changes a lot and a playlist with other music tracks must be supplied quickly.
The user of the installation can immediately dynamically generate a new playlist, in situ and in real-time, after having changed the input of the new desired criteria in the interface into new input criteria.
The user sets the new input criteria by changing one or more buttons and by changing the corresponding one or more weight percentages by touching the relevant keys and by broadening or narrowing the keys to change the weight percentages. Thus, he can: change one or more selection buttons for setting preferred performers or composers;
- change two or more selection buttons for music genres, each subdivided in two or more subgenres;
- change two or more selection buttons for music genres to be excluded;
- change two or more selection buttons for setting one or more historical release periods for the songs from which the desired songs are to be selected;
- use one decision button to start the dynamically created new playlist in situ and in real-time on the basis of the currently adjusted selection buttons.
The new playlist can now substitute the old playlist and play music adapted to the new situation in the hall.
The user may also:
- use one key to save the newly generated playlist in a library or use another button to delete the newly generated playlist after use;
Every user has access to a library of songs or song references provided with metadata but also with extra metadata that have been added and on the basis of which he can generate a new playlist in real-time by means of the interface according to the invention. The present invention is by no means limited to the embodiment described by way of example and represented in the figures; on the contrary, a method and interface according to the invention can be realized in all kinds of forms and sizes while still remaining within the scope of the invention, as defined in the claims.
