These and other features, aspects, and advantages of the present invention will become better understood, when the following detailed description is read with reference to the accompanying drawings in which like characters represent like parts throughout the drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a flow chart illustrating the steps to automate departure and arrival procedures in an airport.
Fig. 2 is a block diagram of a system to automate departure and arrival procedures.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The present invention is explained in reference to an airport terminal. However, the present invention is also applicable to a train terminal, bus terminal, access to an area and so on.
An electronic document can be an electronic identity document for example electronic passport or an identity card or any other identification document in which contains an integrated circuit (IC) chip or radio frequency (RF) chip for storing information that may be read in a non-contact manner. In the electronic passport includes a machine readable passport zone (MRZ) and a non-contact IC chip or RF chip. A passport bearer's facial photo and identity information are printed on an identity information page of the electronic passport. In the MRZ, the identity information, including name, passport number, two check digits, nationality, date of birth, gender, passport expiration date, and personal identity number (PIN) are printed. The same identity information as that printed in the MRZ is separately stored in the non-contact IC chip. Additionally, biometric information of the passport bearer is stored in the non-contact IC chip. The biometric information stored in the non-contact IC chip may include a face image of the passport bearer and additionally a fingerprint image and/or an iris image of the passport bearer.
The present invention provides a method and system (200) for automating arrival and departure procedures performed in an arrival area, a departure area, and a transfer area in the airport by checking the forgery of the electronic passport, identity of the passport bearer using the electronic passport and reduce the time taken for the immigration process.
Referring to figure 1 is a flow chart steps for the automating arrival and departure procedures in a terminal. The method starts at step 110: capture at least one facial feature or a facial image of the person carrying the electronic document and heading towards the immigration entrance or exit gate in the terminal. Then, at step 120 the captured facial features or the facial image is transmitted to an identification information module. Next, at step 130, perform facial recognition to identify the person and retrieve a key associated with the person’s electronic document. The key is associated with the MRZ details in the electronic document. Step 140, the person enters into the immigration terminal and presents the electronic document on an electronic document reader (240) or holds the electronic document within the pre- determined distance range from the electronic document reader (240). Preferably, by presenting the electronic document on the electronic document reader in such a way that without any need to scan the MRZ details of the electronic document. Step 150, establish a secured RF communication link between the IC chip and the electronic document reader (240) using the retrieved key. Step 160, verify whether the identified person is rightful owner of the electronic document. Based on the verification result a control signal is sent to a gate control module (250) connected to the entry and exit gates for the gates to be opened.
Referring to 2, the system (200) for automating arrival and departure procedures includes image acquisition device (210), an exit gate, an entrance gate, and identification information module (220), a database (230), a gate control module (250) and an electronic document reader (240). The entrance gate and the exit gate are respectively installed at the entrance and the exit of a path. The opening/closing of each of the entrance gate and the exit gate is determined according to a control signal
sent by the identification information module (220).
The image acquisition device (210) can be a camera, a first set of cameras are installed at various positions on a path heading towards the immigration entrance gate or exit gate to capture the facial features of the person. The captured facial images are transmitted to the identification information module (220). A second of cameras are installed at the immigration entrance gate and exit gate to capture the facial images to ensure the person presenting passport in the gate is the same person captured at the pathway in the previous process.
The entrance gate and the exit gate are designed to allow only one person to enter the path while another person is allowed to enter the path only when the person in the path has exited from the path through either the entrance gate or the exit gate. To this end, a sensor for detecting the passage of a person may be installed at the entrance gate and the exit gate. When one person passes through the entrance gate or the exit gate, the sensor may detect the passage of the person and close the passed gate to prevent two or more persons from passing through the entrance gate or the exit gate. The opening and closing of the entrance gate or the exit gate is determined according to the control signal provided by the identification information module (220).
The database (230), contains stored identity information and also biometric information related to the person. The biometric information includes facial image, finger print and iris details of the person. The facial image of the person is encrypted with the hash code to prevent it from the tampering and hacking of the data.
The electronic document reader (240) reads the electronic passport of the person that entered and generates identity read information. The second set of cameras arranged at the gate captures the face image of the person. The image acquisition device (210) may capture a fingerprint image and/or an iris image in addition to the face image and generate image biometric information further including the captured fingerprint image and/or iris image. The identity read information, the biometric read information, and the image biometric information are transmitted to the identification information
module (220).
The identification information module (220), is a processing unit configured to receive the captured facial features or facial images from the first and second set of cameras. The identification information module (220), performs the facial recognition to identify the person and extracts the key from the database (230) of the identified person. The key is retrieved without any need for the scanning of the MRZ details in the electronic document. Once the electronic document is tapped or presented on the electronic document reader (250), the identification information module (220) establishes a communication link between the RF chip and the electronic document reader (240). And compares the hash code of facial image with those stored in the database (230) with the information in the RF chip to verify the identity of the person whether the person is rightful owner of the electronic document. If the communication link is established between them, the person is identified as the rightful owner of the electronic document and the control signal is sent to the gate control module (250) to open the gates. Based on the secure connection or communication link between the RF chip and the electronic document reader (240), if any cloned RF chips in the electronic document can be detected.
The gate control module (250) is connected to the entrance and exit gate is configured to receive control signal from the identification information module (220). The control signal is based on the verification result to either open or close the gate.
In case of failure of the identification of the person, the system (200) allows the person to scan the MRZ details of the electronic document to process through the gates.
The present disclosure includes as contained in the appended claims, as well as that of the foregoing description. Although this invention has been described in its preferred form with a degree of particularity, it is understood that the present disclosure of the preferred form has been made only by way of example and that numerous changes in the details of construction and the combination and arrangements of parts may be
resorted to without departing from the scope of the invention.

5. The method according to claim 1, further includes steps of encrypting the data during the communication between the radio frequency chip and the electronic document reader (240) by the identification information module (220) using the retrieved key.
6. A system (200), for automating arrival and departure procedures in a terminal comprising of:
an image acquisition device (210), configured to capture at least one facial feature of a person heading towards an entry or exit gate of the terminal, wherein the person is carrying an electronic document contains a radio frequency chip; and, transmit the captured facial features to an identification information module (220);
the identification information module (220), configured to perform facial recognition for identifying the person and retrieving a key associated to the person’s electronic document from a database (230); and,
an electronic document reader (240), configured to scan the electronic document,
wherein the identification information module (220) establishes a secure communication link between the radio frequency chip and the electronic document reader (240) using the retrieved key, for verifying whether the identified person is rightful owner of the electronic document.
7. The system (200) according to claim 6, wherein the identification information module (220) verifies whether the identified person is rightful owner by comparing the identity details of the person stored in the radio frequency chip with the database (230) using the retrieved key.
8. The system (200) according to claim 6, further comprises a gate control module (250) configured to receive a control signal for opening or closing of
entry or exit gate of the terminal based on the verification result from the identification information module (220).
9. The system (200) according to claim 6, wherein the identification information module (220) establishes the secure radio frequency communication link between the radio frequency chip and the electronic document reader (240) without scanning MRZ details in the electronic document.
10. The system (200) according to claim 6, wherein the identification information module (220), encrypts the data during the communication between the radio frequency chip and the electronic document reader (240) by using the retrieved key.
