Definitions

  • the present invention relates to personal protective equipment garments for cricket.
  • Sports such as cricket are characterised by low-mass high velocity impact energies from ball-to-body impacts during batting, and high-mass low velocity impact energies from ground-to-body impacts during fielding.
  • Conventional personal protective equipment for cricket typically comprises thigh pads, chest protectors and batting leg pads that are worn separately under clothing and which generally consist of varying layers and thicknesses of foam.
  • the foams used in conventional personal protective equipment for cricket typically comprise point-elastic foam materials which restrict deformation to the actual point where impact energy is applied.
  • This conventional use of point-elastic foam materials in personal protective equipment for cricket reinforces the 'more protection, more foam' concept because it means that thicker foam layers must be used to absorb more impact energies at different impact points on the body.
  • a personal protective equipment garment for cricket comprising:
  • each impact absorbing member comprises a single thin layer of an area-elastic foam material or a mixed-elastic foam material.
  • the area-elastic foam material or the mixed-elastic foam material may comprise a microcellular urethane foam.
  • the microcellular urethane foam may comprise PORON ® XRD ® .
  • the single thin layer may have a thickness of between 3 mm and 15 mm.
  • the single thin layer may absorb an impact energy of between 75 J and 155 J.
  • the garment may be selected from a sports bra, a long-sleeve crop top, mid-leg leggings, long-leg leggings, a long-sleeve shirt, short-leg leggings, shorts, and a tank top.
  • the sports bra may comprise a sternum portion between a pair of breast cups, wherein one or more of the impact absorbing members are arranged on or in each of the pair of breast cups and the sternum portion.

  • a personal protective equipment garment for cricket may generally comprise a garment 10 and one or more impact absorbing members 12 arranged on or in the garment 10.
  • Each impact absorbing member 12 may comprise a single thin layer of an area-elastic foam material or a mixed-elastic foam material.
  • the area-elastic foam material or the mixed-elastic foam material may comprise a microcellular urethane foam, for example, the microcellular urethane foam available under the product name PORON ® XRD ® from Rogers Corporation. Comparable or equivalent commercially available area-elastic foam materials or mixed-elastic foam materials from other manufacturers may also be used.
  • the single thin layer may have a thickness of between 3 mm and 15 mm. This is advantageously thinner, lighter and less bulky and cumbersome than the multiple foam layers used in conventional personal protective equipment garments for cricket that embody the 'more protection, more foam' concept and use point-elastic foam materials.
  • the single thin layer of each impact absorbing member 12 may be able to absorb impact energies typically experienced during batting and fielding in the sport of cricket, for example, low-mass high velocity impact energies from ball-to-body impacts during batting, and high-mass low velocity impact energies from ground-to-body impacts during fielding.
  • the single thin layer may, for example, absorb an impact energy of between 75 J and 155 J. This may general correspond to direct cricket ball-to-body impact energies based on maximum cricket ball velocities as they reach batters, for example, up to around 45 ms 1 for balls delivered at around 160 kph.
  • the protective equipment garments may, for example, be formed from a base textile or fabric selected from lycra, cotton, nylon, spandex, elastane, coolmax, elastane, polyester, silk, wool, rayon, and combinations or blends thereof.
  • the one or more impact absorbing members 12 may be fixedly or removably arranged inside pockets or sleeves formed on or in the garment 10.
  • the pockets or sleeves may comprise the same or different material from the base textile or fabric, for example, a comfort liner or a mesh liner.
  • the one or more impact absorbing members 12 may be bonded onto the garment 10, for example, by gluing, welding, or over moulding.
  • the impact absorbing members 12 may be shaped and configured to conform to a wearer's body and substantially cover one or more body portions of the wearer that are typically exposed to the risk of high impact energies during typical activities in cricket, for example, fielding, batting, wicket keeping, etc.
  • the one or more impact absorbing members 12 may be one or more polygonal or circular shapes, including but not limited to generally rectangular, square, triangular, octagonal, hexagonal, rhombic, circular, arcuate, or elliptical shapes.
  • the protective equipment garment 10 may be selected from a sports bra, a long- sleeve crop top, mid-leg leggings, long-leg leggings, a long-sleeve shirt, and short-leg leggings, shorts, and a tank top.
  • the garment 10 may be sized and configured to be worn by males or females who play the sport of cricket. Certain embodiments of the garments described below are, for example, sized and configured to be worn by female cricket players, while other embodiments are, for example, sized and configured to be worn by male cricket players.
  • the protective sports bra 20 may comprise a sternum portion 22 between a pair of breast cups 24.
  • One or more of the impact absorbing members 12 may be positioned or arranged on or in each of the pair of breast cups 24 and the sternum portion 22.
  • the impact absorbing members 12 corresponding to the breast cups 24 may, for example, be provided as removable protective breast padding 26 that is internally received within the breast cups 24.
  • the removable protective breast padding 26 may be removed from the breast cups 24 to allow the bra 20 to be washed.
  • the external, non-removable impact absorbing members 12 may be positioned, arranged and configured to assist proper location and positioning of the removable protective breast padding 26 inside the breast cups 24.
  • a protective long-sleeve crop top 30 may comprise a sternum portion 32 between a pair of breast cups 34, a chest portion 36 above the sternum portion 32 and the pair of breast cups 34, a pair of shoulder portions 38, a pair of arms 37, and a pair of rib portions 39.
  • One or more of the impact absorbing members 12 may be arranged on or in each of the pair of breast cups 34, the sternum portion 32, the chest portion 36, the pair of shoulder portions 38, the pair of arms 40 including each elbow, and the pair of rib portions 42.
  • a pair of impact absorbing members 12 may be arranged on or in a chest band below the sternum portion 32 and the pair of breast cups 34.
  • the removable protective breast padding 26 may be internally received within the breast cups 34 of the long-sleeve crop top 30 in similar fashion to the sports bra 20 described above.
  • Figures 4 and 5 respectively illustrate a protective sleeveless crop top 40 and a sleeveless protective tank top 50 having a similar construction as the long-sleeve protective crop top 30 described above.
  • the removable protective breast padding 26 may be internally received within the respective breast cups 44, 54 of the sleeveless protective crop top 40 and the sleeveless protective long top 50 in similar fashion to the sports bra 20 described above.
  • Figure 6 illustrates protective mid-leg leggings 60 that may comprise a hip or waist portion 62 and a pair of legs 64 each having a knee portion 66.
  • One or more of the impact absorbing members 12 may be arranged on or in each of the hip portion 62 and the knee portions 66.
  • the fielder's protective long-leg leggings 70 may be configured to be worn during fielding and comprise a hip or waist portion 72, a pair of legs 74 each having a thigh portion 76, a knee portion 78, and a shin portion 79.
  • One or more of the impact absorbing members 12 may be arranged on or in each of the hip portion 72 and the knee portions 78.
  • the fielder's protective long-leg leggings 70 may be alternatively configured as keeper's protective long-leg leggings 70 to be worn during wicket keeping by increasing the thickness and/or impact energy absorption of the shin portions 79.
  • FIG 8 illustrates batter's protective long-leg leggings 80 which are similar to the fielder's protective long-leg leggings 70 of Figure 7 except that they have a relatively higher level of impact energy absorption for batting compared to fielding.
  • one or more of the impact absorbing members 12 may be further arranged on or in each of the thigh portions 86 of the batter's long-leg leggings 80.
  • the pair of legs 84 may each have a groin portion 87 between the hip portion 82 and the thigh portion 86.

Description

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT GARMENTS FOR CRICKET
Field
[0001] The present invention relates to personal protective equipment garments for cricket.
Background
[0002] Sports such as cricket are characterised by low-mass high velocity impact energies from ball-to-body impacts during batting, and high-mass low velocity impact energies from ground-to-body impacts during fielding. Conventional personal protective equipment for cricket typically comprises thigh pads, chest protectors and batting leg pads that are worn separately under clothing and which generally consist of varying layers and thicknesses of foam.
[0003] Conventional personal protective equipment for cricket suffers from various drawbacks. The emphasis on varying layers and thicknesses of foam reflect the almost universally accepted design concept that more foam equals more protection. The 'more protection, more foam' concept has led to bulky, cumbersome and heavy personal protective equipment for cricket that restricts user movement, and hence impairs player performance during batting, bowling and fielding.
[0004] In addition, the foams used in conventional personal protective equipment for cricket typically comprise point-elastic foam materials which restrict deformation to the actual point where impact energy is applied. This conventional use of point-elastic foam materials in personal protective equipment for cricket reinforces the 'more protection, more foam' concept because it means that thicker foam layers must be used to absorb more impact energies at different impact points on the body.
[0005] Furthermore, female participation in cricket is rapidly increasing, and cricket is now widely played by women and young girls at both amateur and professional levels. The bulky, cumbersome and heavy personal protective equipment conventionally used for cricket is a barrier to high performance, and is particularly ill-suited for female cricket players. [0006] In this context, there is a need for improved personal protective equipment for cricket for both females and males.

[0024] Referring to the drawings, a personal protective equipment garment for cricket according to an embodiment of the present invention may generally comprise a garment 10 and one or more impact absorbing members 12 arranged on or in the garment 10. Each impact absorbing member 12 may comprise a single thin layer of an area-elastic foam material or a mixed-elastic foam material. The area-elastic foam material or the mixed-elastic foam material may comprise a microcellular urethane foam, for example, the microcellular urethane foam available under the product name PORON® XRD® from Rogers Corporation. Comparable or equivalent commercially available area-elastic foam materials or mixed-elastic foam materials from other manufacturers may also be used.
[0025] The single thin layer may have a thickness of between 3 mm and 15 mm. This is advantageously thinner, lighter and less bulky and cumbersome than the multiple foam layers used in conventional personal protective equipment garments for cricket that embody the 'more protection, more foam' concept and use point-elastic foam materials. The single thin layer of each impact absorbing member 12 may be able to absorb impact energies typically experienced during batting and fielding in the sport of cricket, for example, low-mass high velocity impact energies from ball-to-body impacts during batting, and high-mass low velocity impact energies from ground-to-body impacts during fielding. The single thin layer may, for example, absorb an impact energy of between 75 J and 155 J. This may general correspond to direct cricket ball-to-body impact energies based on maximum cricket ball velocities as they reach batters, for example, up to around 45 ms 1 for balls delivered at around 160 kph.
[0026] The protective equipment garments may, for example, be formed from a base textile or fabric selected from lycra, cotton, nylon, spandex, elastane, coolmax, elastane, polyester, silk, wool, rayon, and combinations or blends thereof. The one or more impact absorbing members 12 may be fixedly or removably arranged inside pockets or sleeves formed on or in the garment 10. The pockets or sleeves may comprise the same or different material from the base textile or fabric, for example, a comfort liner or a mesh liner. Alternatively, the one or more impact absorbing members 12 may be bonded onto the garment 10, for example, by gluing, welding, or over moulding. The impact absorbing members 12 may be shaped and configured to conform to a wearer's body and substantially cover one or more body portions of the wearer that are typically exposed to the risk of high impact energies during typical activities in cricket, for example, fielding, batting, wicket keeping, etc. The one or more impact absorbing members 12 may be one or more polygonal or circular shapes, including but not limited to generally rectangular, square, triangular, octagonal, hexagonal, rhombic, circular, arcuate, or elliptical shapes.
[0027] The protective equipment garment 10 may be selected from a sports bra, a long- sleeve crop top, mid-leg leggings, long-leg leggings, a long-sleeve shirt, and short-leg leggings, shorts, and a tank top. The garment 10 may be sized and configured to be worn by males or females who play the sport of cricket. Certain embodiments of the garments described below are, for example, sized and configured to be worn by female cricket players, while other embodiments are, for example, sized and configured to be worn by male cricket players.
[0028] Referring to Figure 1 , the protective sports bra 20 may comprise a sternum portion 22 between a pair of breast cups 24. One or more of the impact absorbing members 12 may be positioned or arranged on or in each of the pair of breast cups 24 and the sternum portion 22. Referring to Figure 2, the impact absorbing members 12 corresponding to the breast cups 24 may, for example, be provided as removable protective breast padding 26 that is internally received within the breast cups 24. The removable protective breast padding 26 may be removed from the breast cups 24 to allow the bra 20 to be washed. The external, non-removable impact absorbing members 12 may be positioned, arranged and configured to assist proper location and positioning of the removable protective breast padding 26 inside the breast cups 24.
[0029] Referring to Figure 3, a protective long-sleeve crop top 30 may comprise a sternum portion 32 between a pair of breast cups 34, a chest portion 36 above the sternum portion 32 and the pair of breast cups 34, a pair of shoulder portions 38, a pair of arms 37, and a pair of rib portions 39. One or more of the impact absorbing members 12 may be arranged on or in each of the pair of breast cups 34, the sternum portion 32, the chest portion 36, the pair of shoulder portions 38, the pair of arms 40 including each elbow, and the pair of rib portions 42. As illustrated, a pair of impact absorbing members 12 may be arranged on or in a chest band below the sternum portion 32 and the pair of breast cups 34. Although not shown, the removable protective breast padding 26 may be internally received within the breast cups 34 of the long-sleeve crop top 30 in similar fashion to the sports bra 20 described above.
[0030] Figures 4 and 5 respectively illustrate a protective sleeveless crop top 40 and a sleeveless protective tank top 50 having a similar construction as the long-sleeve protective crop top 30 described above. Again, although not shown, the removable protective breast padding 26 may be internally received within the respective breast cups 44, 54 of the sleeveless protective crop top 40 and the sleeveless protective long top 50 in similar fashion to the sports bra 20 described above.
[0031 ] Figure 6 illustrates protective mid-leg leggings 60 that may comprise a hip or waist portion 62 and a pair of legs 64 each having a knee portion 66. One or more of the impact absorbing members 12 may be arranged on or in each of the hip portion 62 and the knee portions 66.
[0032] Referring to Figure 7, the fielder's protective long-leg leggings 70 may be configured to be worn during fielding and comprise a hip or waist portion 72, a pair of legs 74 each having a thigh portion 76, a knee portion 78, and a shin portion 79. One or more of the impact absorbing members 12 may be arranged on or in each of the hip portion 72 and the knee portions 78. The fielder's protective long-leg leggings 70 may be alternatively configured as keeper's protective long-leg leggings 70 to be worn during wicket keeping by increasing the thickness and/or impact energy absorption of the shin portions 79.
[0033] Figure 8 illustrates batter's protective long-leg leggings 80 which are similar to the fielder's protective long-leg leggings 70 of Figure 7 except that they have a relatively higher level of impact energy absorption for batting compared to fielding. In this batting embodiment, one or more of the impact absorbing members 12 may be further arranged on or in each of the thigh portions 86 of the batter's long-leg leggings 80. In addition, the pair of legs 84 may each have a groin portion 87 between the hip portion 82 and the thigh portion 86. One or more of the impact absorbing members 12 may be further arranged on or in each of the groin portions 87 and the shin portions 89. In addition, the hip portion 82 and thigh portion 86 on the front left or right ball-facing leg 84 facing the bowler may be increased in one or more of size, thickness and impact energy absorption. [0034] Figure 9 illustrates batter's protective shorts 90 which are similar to the batter's long-leg protective leggings 80 described above except that the legs 84 are shortened to above the knee and thus omit the shin portions.
