A non-exhaustive listing of such ingredients can be found in the CFTA International Cosmetic /ingredient /dictionary and Handbook, Fourteenth Edition (2012), the contents of which are incorporated by reference here in its entirety.
[0035] One skilled in the art will take care to select the optional additional additives in the concentration to provide the desired properties and performance of the composition. [0036] The composition herein may be in any form suitable for applying on keratinous materials. For example, a mascara composition may be an emulsion (water-in-oil or oil- in-water, multiple emulsions such as water/oil/water and oil/water/oil, or nano-emulsion), a non-emulsified mixture of a water phase and an oil phase, an oil-free composition, or a water-free composition.
[0037] The composition as applied to eyelashes is usually applied using a brush, wand, comb, paper, or fingers. The amount of the composition applied to eyelashes will depend on the user. The mascara composition is applied so as to coat the eyelashes with the composition. The user can apply a single coat or multiple coats of the composition to the eyelash. A coat can be applied, allowed to dry, and another coat applied. This can be repeated until the user obtains the desired effect. The coats can also be applied without drying between coats to obtain the desired effect. The effect may be an increase in volume, length, and/or curl of the eyelash. After application of the composition the eyelashes may appear longer, thicker, and/or curled when compared to the eyelash without the composition applied. The effect may last for 6 -12 hours depending on the activity level of the user.
[0038] The following examples are intended to illustrate the composition performance without limiting the scope as a result. The percentages are given on a weight basis, unless indicated otherwise.
[0039] Notwithstanding that the numerical ranges and parameters setting forth the broad scope of the performance and composition are approximations, the numerical values set forth in the specific examples are reported as precisely as possible within the inherent error and standard deviation found in the instruments used.
[0040] A non-waterproof mascara with film formers was tested to determine the increase in lash thickness after application of the mascara sample using the following procedure.
[0041] A minimum of 15 strands of virgin (undyed) brown hair per sample was used for analysis.
[0042] The base mascara formula was identical for all the samples. The concentration of PVA, SMDI, and GR varied for each formula tested as shown in Table 1.
[0043] Referencing Table 1 , the best performance is seen with the highest number for volume and the lowest number for smudge. A smudge score of ^5.5 is not a viable composition.
[0044] In Table 1 the numbers for Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA), polyolprepolymer (SMDI), and rosinate (GR) are concentration percent. [0045] TABLE
