Abstract

A pair of subwoofer speakers mounted on a carrier in a ceiling speaker enclosure having a small acoustic port using an acoustic channel shell that extends from the enclosure, the output of which is directed by adjustable attachment of a director to the acoustic channel shell. An annular flange on the director is used to clamp to a bottom surface of a ceiling tile. The enclosure has braces for engaging grid members of a suspended ceiling support grid. The braces are independently extendable from the enclosure. The subwoofer speakers at least partially face each other. Vibration damping approaches are used. An audio controller may be used to control the phases of the audio signals to the subwoofer speakers to permit a push-pull synchronization strategy.

In regard to claim 1, Kim does not teach applicant's "partially externally threaded acoustic channel shell... extending from inside said ceiling speaker enclosure, through said central opening, and to outside said ceiling speaker enclosure" (claim 1, as amended). Cartlson teaches away from the use of his invention with subwoofers (Col. 2, lines 10-15), where Carlson enumerates "mid-bass/mid-range frequencies using cone-type loudspeakers and for high frequencies" but omits subwoofer frequencies. Under the enumeration rule, an item left off a list is deemd intentionally left off. Stewart's ceiling tile is not an enclosure.

In regard to claim 2, Stewart does not teach applicant's "plurality of extendable_braces" (claim 2, as amended), where Stewart's braces are fixed (FIG. 1).

In regard to claim 3, Stewart does not teach applicant's "each extendable brace of said plurality of extendable braces is independently extendable" (claim 3, as amended), where Stewart's braces are fixed (FIG. 1).

In regard to claim 5, neither Kim nor Carlson teaches applicant's "said long central axes ... align colinearly above, and proximate to, a wider end of said conical portion of said acoustic channel shell" (claim 5, as amended), where Kim has only one speaker and Kim's 30 is a speaker (col. 3, line 26) and not an acoustic channel shell and Carlson's axes align at the narrow end of his horn 52 (FIG. 3).

In regard to claim 6, Carlson does not teach applicant's "wherein said first and second subwoofer speakers are ... supported on said subwoofer carrier" (claim 6, as amended),

30 where "said subwoofer carrier" is described in claim 1 and Carlso does not have one and Carlson teaches away from subwoofers being used in his invention.

In regard to claim 8, Carlson does not teach applicant's "basket support extending between, and connecting to, respective first and second baskets of said first and second subwoofer speakers" (claim 8, as amended), where Carlson's tapered wedge 30 extends from edges of apertures 24 and 26 in panels 18 and 22, respectively (FIG. 1; col. 3, lines 22-36), and not from the speakers.

In regard to claim 10, Kim does not teach applicant's "said acoustic channel shell comprises ... a conical shell extending from said cylindrical shell, widening toward said first and second subwoofers, and fixed in said subwoofer carrier" (claim 10, as amended), where Kim's alleged subwoofer is at the narrow end of Kim's alleged acoustic channel shell (EFM 1).

In regard to claim 11, Kim does not teach applicant's "said partially threaded acoustic channel shell comprises two separate sets of corresponding, circumferentially spaced-apart, opposed sets of exterior threads on said cylindrical shell" (claim 11, as amended), ), where Kim has only one thread on Kim's alleged acoustic channel shell (col. 2, lines 27-31). Kim does not teach applicant's "director interface having a cylindrical shell body further comprising two separate sets of corresponding, circumferentially spaced-apart, opposed sets of interior threads corresponding to said exterior sets of threads on said partially threaded acoustic channel shell" (claim 11, as amended), where Kim has only one thread on Kim's alleged director interface (col. 2, lines 27-31).
