Description

GLASS FIBER REINFORCED PBT/PET BLEND MATERIALS
The present invention relates to materials with high-gloss, high chemical resistance and high temperature resistance, developed to be used in visual parts.
In the state of the art, as a result of the visual parts of the household appliances with which cooking process is performed such as oven, Turkish coffee maker, being subject to heat, polybutylene terephthalate/polyethylene terephthalate (PBT/PET) blend materials with high gloss, high chemical resistance and high heat resistance are used in such visual parts. In order to enhance rigidity and strength, glass fiber reinforcement in varying ratios is used in such blend materials. Glass fibers may deteriorate the surface appearance and reduce the gloss due to its fibrous structure. Methods are used in order to enhance gloss in such PBT/PET blend materials, such as forming a second glossy layer on the surface by using various chemical additives, or forming separate polymeric blend materials.
State of the art Chinese patent application no. CN104693695 (A) discloses a low density polybutylene terephthalate material reducing sound and vibration, comprising polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), glass fibers, hollow glass spheres, lubricant, antioxidant and binder.
State of the art Chinese patent no. CN101580632 (B) discloses a glass fiber reinforced polybutylene terephthalate/polymethyl methacrylate (PBT/PMMA) mixture with high gloss and performance.
The aim of the present invention is to produce household appliances having visual parts comprising polybutylene terephthalate/polyethylene terephthalate (PBT/BET) blend materials with high-gloss, high chemical resistance and high temperature resistance.
The blend material realized to achieve the aim of the present invention and disclosed in the first claim and the dependent claims, comprises polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), glass fibers, glass balls (solid glass sphere), lubricant and antioxidant.
This blend material is used in visual parts of households appliances in which cooking process is performed such as oven or Turkish coffee maker.
The PBT/PET blend material comprises polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), glass fibers, lubricant and antioxidant.
The PBT/PET blend material of the invention comprises polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), glass fibers, glass balls (solid glass sphere), lubricant and antioxidant.
Using glass fibers mechanically enhances the PBT/PET blend material. However, using solely glass fibers causes the surface to dull and lose gloss. Glass balls are used in the blend material of the invention as a solution to this problem. Addition of glass balls improves the gloss. Glass balls (solid glass sphere) also bring a cost advantage due to being very low cost, as well as eliminate the ruggedness generated by the rugged structure of the glass fibers used in the blend material, by filling in between.

Using glass fibers in a ratio of 3-35% is the optimum range for the invention to work.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the diameter of a glass fiber is in the range of 8-15 µm.
Opting for a large size for the glass fibers increases the rugged structure on the surface, whereas opting for a very small size decreases processability. The stated range is the optimum size calculated for this application.
Blend material according to claim 1, characterized by comprising surface modification compatible with polyester.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the PBT/PET blend material comprises polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) in a ratio of 15-70%.

In an embodiment of the invention, the viscosity of the polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) is in the range of 0.85-0.96 dL/G.
The viscosity of the PBT/PET blend is a critical parameter for achieving the desired appearance and providing processability. The aim in this application is to obtain a glossy surface. In order to make the part's surface glossy, it is attempted during injection to enable the PET which is the polymer enhancing gloss to rise over the surface of the PBT polymer. Said viscosity values and said ratios are particularly opted for providing gloss and also being able to blend the PBT/PET polymers.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the PBT/PET blend material comprises polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in a ratio of 15-70%.
PET gives gloss to the plastic and enhances thermal resistance. However, the amount of PET not being selected in an appropriate ratio causes the PBT/PET blend to become not processable in the extruder and in injection, making it difficult to produce parts.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the viscosity of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is in the range of 0.710 ± 0.010 dL/G.

In order to make the part's surface glossy, it is attempted during injection to enable the PET which is the polymer enhancing gloss to rise over the surface of the PBT polymer. Said viscosity values and said ratios are particularly opted for providing gloss and also being able to blend the PBT/PET polymers.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the PBT/PET blend material comprises glass balls in a ratio of 3-35%.
Using glass balls in a ratio of 3-35% is the optimum range for the invention to work.
Blend material according to claim 9, characterized by comprising glass balls with a diameter of 3-40 µm.
The purpose of using glass balls here is eliminating the negative structure formed by the glass fibers by filling in between, and forming a smooth surface on the part's surface thanks to their spherical shape. The selected glass ball dimension is the optimum size deducted for the selected size of the glass fibers.
