Abstract
The present invention relates to a system and method for monitoring ambient sounds in the home and prioritizing predetermined sounds to enable users notice urgent situations or hear important alarms from home appliances. The present invention more particularly relates to a notification system comprising an image display device and at least one sound generation device in signal communication with said image display device, said sound generation devices being capable of transmitting an information signature of a generated sound or alarm to said image display device.
Description
The present invention relates to a system and method for monitoring ambient sounds in the home and prioritizing predetermined sounds to enable users notice urgent situations or hear important alarms from home appliances.
Alarms such as fire or intrusion alarms are intended to timely convey critical information as to an urgent situation to users. Environment sensing systems together with personal warning means wearable by a person being known per se, such a system and wearable unit is particularly effective in notifying the user of a sound event in the surrounding environment.
A prior art publication in the technical field of the present invention may be referred to as WO2011000113, which discloses a system for notifying a deaf/hearing impaired user of multiple sounds produced in the ambient environment including non-verbal sounds and words spoken by the human voice, said system comprising a controller, at least one audio input device and at least one output device. The controller provides for storing a plurality of target sounds. The audio input device continuously captures in real-time sounds produced in the ambient environment and transmits in real-time the captured sounds to the controller. The controller compares in real-time a given captured sound to each target sound in order to determine a match there between. The controller signals the output device when a match is made. The output device receives this signal from the controller that a given sound produced in the ambient environment has been captured and produces a notification signal thereby notifying in real-time the user of the given captured sound.
The present invention provides a central station in the form of an image display device, i.e. a TV set, connecting to a plurality of alarm generating devices whereby a visual notification is automatically generated by the image display device as defined by the characterizing features in Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is to provide an alarm generating device notification system by an image display device.
The present invention proposes a notification system comprising an image display device and at least one remote alarm generating device in signal communication with said image display device. Sounds generated by the remotely connected alarm generating devices are detected by an electronic control unit of said image display device and if the image display device’s screen is not already active, the electronic control unit automatically wakes up the screen and generates a flashing visual image to be communicated to the user. Alternatively, the image display device itself can generate the same alarm sound accompanying the original alarm.
Alternatively or additionally, said flashing visual image is replaced by a stationary informational screen with a textual description of the occurring situation.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a system and method by which an image display device is operable, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief hereinafter.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in said claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
Fig. 1 demonstrates a general flow diagram of an algorithm being implemented according to the present invention.
The present invention relates to an image display device having an automatic user notification function. The present invention proposes a system and method for monitoring sound generation status of home appliances and alarm generation devices and visualizes received sound generation information on the TV screen.
The image display device of the present invention comprises an electronic control unit in communication with a plurality of home appliances preferably in wireless communication with said image display device. Each home appliance can be typically installed in a separate room in a house. Such home appliances and alarm generating devices for instance include mobile phones, doorbells/intercoms, fire or smoke detection units, intrusion detection systems or generally security systems, ovens generating notification sounds, dishwasher or laundry treatment machines generating various notification sounds, coffee makers, treadmills, smartwatches, etc. All such devices are generally referred to as sound generating devices in the present detailed description. Each sound generating device is remotely connected by the image display devices and information as to generation of a sound or alarm is transmitted to the image display device.
Hardware of the sound generating devices can be designed to be able to use at least one wired or wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, etc.) communication platform. Typically, an activate/deactivate feature is added to a user interface designed for the sound generating device to be directly in communication with the image display device so that the user can turn on the feature using the TV set.
According to the present invention, the image display device assumes the role of a central node receiving data from a plurality of peripheral nodes, i.e. sound generating devices. When the electronic control unit receives signature information as to generated sound or alarm by a sound generating device, the electronic control unit mutes current sound generated by the image display device and generates on the screen thereof a high-contrast, preferably black and white flashing visual image as an indication of the generated sound or alarm to be communicated to the user.
In the event that the signature information indicates that the generated alarm is associated with a predefined urgent situation such as fire alarm, security alarm etc., the electronic control unit automatically wakes up the image display device if it is not already turned on, and generates on the screen a flashing visual image. The flashing visual screen is effective in visually notifying the emerging urgent situation in a flashing manner with a strong impact to the user. While the flashing visual image is shown with no accompanied sound, the original alarm is audible from the respective device directly generating the same.
According to an alternative embodiment, the image display device can be provided with an internal or remotely accessible database of preloaded sound/alarm files so that it can retrieve the same and automatically generate the alarm or sound itself based on the identification of the sound from the signature information thereof to play the same alarm or sound accompanying the flashing screen. In this case, the alarm or sound will be generated simultaneously both by the original device generating the respective sound or alarm and the image display device.
Additionally, in a variation of the present invention, the flashing screen can be replaced by an informational screen indicating a textual description of the urgent event. The informational screen is preferably shown to the user directly upon waking up of the image display device.
Said sound generating devices as well as the image display device typically constitute peripheral and central network nodes with respective network interface cards to establish network connections in a LAN.
In a nutshell, the present invention proposes a notification system comprising an image display device and at least one sound generation device in signal communication with said image display device, said sound generation devices being capable of transmitting an information signature of a generated sound or alarm to said image display device.
In one aspect of the present invention, said at least one sound generation device is configured to generate a sound or alarm and transmit an information signature in association with said generated sound or alarm to said image display device.
In a further aspect of the present invention, an electronic control unit of said image display device is configured to process said information signature in association with said generated sound or alarm and generate a visual indication on the screen of said image display device informative of said generated sound or alarm.
In a further aspect of the present invention, said electronic control unit mutes all sound generated by the image display device upon receipt of said information signature.
In a further aspect of the present invention, said electronic control unit automatically wakes up the image display device screen if the screen is not turned on and generates on the screen a visual indication informative of a generated alarm as an urgent situation to be communicated.
In a further aspect of the present invention, said visual indication is a high contrast black and white flashing visual image.
In a further aspect of the present invention, an internal memory unit of the image display device stores a database of sound or alarm files in association with different information signatures of sound or alarms by each sound generating device.
In a further aspect of the present invention, said visual indication is a stationary informational screen with a textual description of the sound or alarm status.
In a further aspect of the present invention, said textual description of the urgent situation is communicated to a portable electronic device.
In a further aspect of the present invention, said portable electronic device is a user-wearable device.
In a further aspect of the present invention, said image display device access a remote database of sound or alarm files in association with different information signatures of sound or alarms by each sound generating device.
In a further aspect of the present invention, said image display device is configured to automatically generate the alarm or sound based on the identification of the sound from the signature information thereof and play the same alarm or sound.
The automatic notification system is advantageous in that an urgent situation can be effectively communicated to the user by waking up the screen of the TV set. Additionally, the alarm or sound itself is advantageously played directly by the image display device itself.
