Description

NON-INDEXABLE END-TO-END BUTT PIPE COUPLER FOR USE IN WASTEWATER DRAINAGE STACK
Field of the Invention
The invention relates to end-to-end butt pipe couplers for use in a wastewater drainage stack of polypropylene (PP) pipes.
Background of the Invention
Wastewater drainage stacks of polypropylene (PP) pipes include an ingress pipe and an egress pipe with the same external pipe diameter. The ingress pipe ends at a so-called male egress pipe end of the same external pipe diameter. The egress pipe ends at a so-called female egress pipe end for sealed sliding insertion of a male ingress pipe end thereinto. Damage to a wastewater drainage stack can be repaired using a commercially available end-to-end butt pipe coupler for end-to-end butt coupling an ingress pipe and an egress pipe. Commercially available end-to-end butt pipe couplers are known to be prone to possible wastewater drainage leakage.
Summary of the Invention
The present invention is directed toward improvements in end-to-end butt pipe couplers to prevent fluid leakage in wastewater drainage stacks of polypropylene (PP) pipes. The end-to-end butt pipe couplers include an internal overlap arrangement and are necessarily deployed for an intended flow direction of gravitational wastewater drainage therethrough.
Brief Description of Drawings
In order to understand the invention and to see how it can be carried out in practice, a preferred embodiment will now be described, by way of a non- limiting example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which similar parts are likewise numbered, and in which: Fig. 1 is a front elevation view of a wastewater drainage stack section including an ingress pipe and an egress pipe;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal cross section of the wastewater drainage stack section along line 2-2 in Figure 1 ;
Fig. 3 is a front perspective view of a conventional indexable end-to-end butt pipe coupler for repairing a wastewater drainage stack;
Fig. 4A is a longitudinal cross section of an assemblage of the Figure 3 pipe coupler, an ingress pipe and an egress pipe along line 4A-4A in Figure 3;
Fig. 4B is an enlarged view of an encircled section A in Figure 4A;
Fig. 5 is a front perspective view of a non-indexable end-to-end butt pipe coupler in accordance with the teachings of the present invention for repairing a wastewater drainage stack;
Fig. 6A is a longitudinal cross section of an assemblage of the Figure 5 pipe coupler, an ingress pipe and an egress pipe along line 6A-6A in Figure 5;

Detailed Description of Drawings
Figure 1 and Figure 2 show a polypropylene (PP) pipe wastewater drainage stack section 10 including an ingress pipe 20 and an egress pipe 30. The ingress pipe 20 and the egress pipe 30 have the same external pipe diameter. The ingress pipe 20 ends at a so-called male ingress pipe end 21 of the same external pipe diameter. The egress pipe 30 ends at a so-called female egress pipe end 31 for sealed sliding insertion of the male ingress pipe end 21 thereinto. The female egress pipe end 31 has an egress pipe end surface 32 and an annular seal groove 33 thereto wards. The annular seal groove 33 houses an annular seal 34 for sealing engagement with the male ingress pipe end 21.
A wastewater drainage stack can require repair at different locations therealong: Midway along an ingress pipe 20. Midway along an egress pipe 30. At a female egress pipe end 31. Irrespective of the location of a repair along a wastewater drainage stack, the pipe sections above and below a repair are correspondingly termed as being an ingress pipe 40 and an egress pipe 50. Figure 3, Figure 4 A and Figure 4B show a conventional end-to-end butt pipe coupler 100 for coupling an ingress pipe 40 and an egress pipe 50. Such pipe couplers are commercially available from the present Applicant Huliot Agricultural Cooperative Society Ltd. wwwiiuliot.com Huliot Catalog No. 707170070. The ingress pipe 40 has an ingress pipe end 41. The egress pipe 50 has an egress pipe end 51. The ingress pipe 40 and the egress pipe 50 have the same external pipe diameter along their entire lengths including their pipe ends.
The pipe coupler 100 has a longitudinal pipe coupler centerline 101 and includes a tubular housing 102 having an external housing surface 103, an internal housing surface 104 and an opposite pair of housing end surfaces 106 and 107. The housing 102 includes an opposite pair of female housing ports 108 and 109 for corresponding sliding insertion of the ingress pipe end 41 and the egress pipe end 51 thereinto. The housing 102 includes an annular flange 111 between the female housing ports 108 and 109 inwardly radially directed toward the longitudinal pipe coupler centerline 101. The annular inwardly directed flange 111 has an opposite pair of flange surfaces 112 and 113 correspondingly facing the housing end surfaces 106 and 107. The female housing port 108 has an annular seal groove 114 disposed toward its housing end surface 106 with an annular seal 116 fitted therein. The female housing port 109 has an annular seal groove 117 disposed towards its housing end surface 107 with an annular seal 118 fitted therein.
The ingress pipe end 41 is slidingly inserted into the female housing port 108 until abutment against the flange surface 112 and seals against the annular seal 116. The egress pipe end 51 is slidingly inserted into the female housing port 109 until abutment against the flange surface 113 and seals against the annular seal 118. On gravitational wastewater drainage from the ingress pipe 40 to the egress pipe 50 wastewater drainage can accumulate at the annular seal 118 which can lead to fluid leakage. The pipe coupler 100 is indexable insofar as the ingress pipe 40 can be connected to the female housing port 109 and the egress pipe 50 connected to the female housing port 108 in which case wastewater drainage can accumulate at the annular seal 116.
Figure 5, Figure 6 A and Figure 6B show a non-indexable end-to-end butt pipe coupler 200 similar in construction to the pipe coupler 100 and therefore similar parts are likewise numbered. The non-indexable end-to-end butt pipe coupler 200 includes a female ingress housing port 201 for sealingly slidingly receiving an ingress pipe end 41 thereinto, a female egress housing port 202 for sealingly slidingly receiving an egress pipe end 51 thereinto and a wastewater drainage flow indicator 203 on the external housing surface 103 for indicating an intended flow direction of gravitational wastewater drainage from the ingress pipe 40 to the egress pipe 50. The wastewater drainage flow indicator 203 is denoted by a downward pointing arrow and the word FLOW.
The annular inwardly directed flange 111 includes a tubular sleeve 204 concentric with the longitudinal pipe coupler centerline 101 extending toward the female egress housing port 202. The tubular sleeve 204 bounds a tubular cavity 206 with the female egress housing port 202 for sealingly slidingly receiving the egress pipe end 51 therein. The pipe coupler 200 affords an internal overlap arrangement from the ingress pipe 40 to the egress pipe 50 to preclude wastewater accumulation at the annular seal 118 during gravitational wastewater drainage flow.
While the invention has been described with respect to a limited number of embodiments, it will be appreciated that many variations, modifications, and other applications of the invention can be made within the scope of the appended claims.

Claims

Claims:
1. An end-to-end butt pipe coupler for use in a wastewater drainage stack, the pipe coupler coupling an ingress pipe and an egress pipe for gravitational wastewater drainage therethrough, the ingress pipe having an ingress pipe end, and the egress pipe having an egress pipe end,
the pipe coupler having a longitudinal pipe coupler centerline and comprising a tubular housing having an external housing surface, an internal housing surface, an opposite pair of housing end surfaces, and an opposite pair of female housing ports for sliding insertion of the ingress pipe end into a first female housing port of said opposite pair of female housing ports and the egress pipe end into a second female housing port of said opposite pair of female housing ports,
an annular flange between said opposite pair of female housing ports and inwardly radially directed toward the longitudinal pipe coupler centerline, said annular inwardly directed flange having an opposite pair of flange surfaces facing toward their corresponding said housing end surface such that the ingress pipe end abuts against one flange surface on its said sliding insertion into said first female housing port and the egress pipe end abuts against the other flange surface on said its sliding insertion into said second female housing port,
said opposite pair of female housing ports each having an annular seal groove disposed toward their corresponding said housing end surface and each said annular seal groove having an annular seal such that the ingress pipe end seals against one annular seal on its said sliding insertion into said first female housing port and the egress pipe end seals against the other annular seal on its said sliding insertion said second female housing port,
characterized in
said annular inwardly directed flange has a tubular sleeve concentric with the longitudinal pipe coupler centerline extending toward said second female housing port of said opposite pair of female housing ports to bound a tubular cavity therewith for sealingly receiving the egress pipe end therein whereby the end-to-end butt pipe coupler is non-indexable with said first female housing port constituting a female ingress housing port for sealingly receiving the ingress pipe end and said second female housing port constituting a female egress housing port for sealingly receiving the egress pipe end, and said external housing surface has a wastewater drainage flow indicator for indicating an intended flow direction of gravitational wastewater drainage through the non-indexable end-to-end butt pipe coupler from the ingress pipe to the egress pipe.
