During use off the cutting and clamping device, the three legs 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b form a triangular cavity capable of receiving an object to be clamped.
The first clamp 1 is configured for being detached from said clamp and cutting device. The clamping and cutting device further comprises a first chock 32, arranged on the push rod 19 and extending longitudinally along the push rod 19 towards the member 7. The first chock 32 is configured for pushing the first clamp 1 in a sliding movement within the clamp holder 16 and detach the first clamp 1 from the clamp and cutting device.
The clamping and cutting device further comprises a griping mean 37, arranged on the clamp holder 16. The gripping mean 37 has an ergonomic form, so as to engage with a user's fingers during closure of the first and second clamp.
During use, to cut an umbilical cord, the user (operator) grips the device by placing the operators thumb against the pusher section 10 and placing the fingers into the finger receiving passageways defined by the gripping means 33. The smooth underside of the clamp holder 16 is preferably placed against the surface of the stomach of a baby during delivery. The umbilical cord is passed into the triangular cavity formed by the legs 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b and 5a, 5b. The operator closes the first and second clamp.
The flexible guards 25 and 38 ensures that the cord remains within the clamps during operation of the device. Furthermore, the flexible guards 25 and 38 prevent the object to be clamped from passing into the hinges 6 and 8.
By then pressing the pusher section 10 with the thumb as if operating a syringe, the push rod is pushed against the member 7 and the cutting means 15 is driven towards the cord and the first chock 32 synchronously slide the first clamps 1 through the clamp holder 16. The umbilical cord is thereby cut by the cutting means 15. After the cut the first clamp 1 is disengaged from the clamping and cutting device as it has slid out of the clamp holder 16 by moving past the supporting means 11, 12, 13 and 14 and the clamp holder 16.
The first clamp 1 remains closed due to the locking members 20, 21 and stays on the baby's umbilical cord stump. The second clamp 2 remains closed in the clamp holder 16 thus clamping off the umbilical cord on the mother's side. The clamps 1, 2 and the clamp holder 16 may all be made from different coloured materials. Suitably, all of the components except the cutting means may be moulded in plastics such as nylon. Reference is now made to figure 3, schematically illustrating the first clamp 1 as stand alone. The first legs 3a, 3b and/or said second legs 4a, 4b comprises a gripping surface 28 such as bulges, or a surface section made from rubber or a rubbery material for increased friction, on the outer face.
The first 1 and/or second 2 clamp is moulded from a plastics material.
The T-shaped rail 36 is to ensure that the first clamp 1 can slide on the clamp holder 16 so as to detach from the clamp and cutting device. Similarly, the T- shaped rail 36 may ensure that the second clamp 2 can slide on the clamp holder 16 so as to detach from the clamp and cutting device. Figure 4 schematically illustrates a first locking member 20. The first locking member 20 comprises an outwardly facing abutment surface on a dog 26. The second locking member 21 (not shown in figure 4) comprises a sharp appendage extending backwards 27 acting as a hook. The function of the locking members 20, 21 is to prevent the clamp from unintentionally springing open. This is achieved by an interlocking of the two locking members.
The clamp and cutting device is sterile and packed, while maintaining sterility, in sterile packaging (not shown). Figure 5 and 6 schematically illustrates a security feature on the clamp and cutting device. The clamp and cutting device comprises means 30, 31 configured for preventing the cutting means 15 to advance between the first 1 and second 2 clamps to cut an object in use, unless the first 1 and second 2 clamp are closed via the locking members. The user is forced to close or "click" the first and second clamp in order to push the push rod against the member 7, and hereby advance the cutting means between the first and second clamp. "Click Click Cut" is only possible if the user clicks (closes) the first and second clamp. "No Click No Cut": if the user does not Click (close) the first and second clamp, the means 30, 31 does not allow the push rod, and hereby the cutting means, to advance between the first and second clamp. Figure 7 schematically illustrates the first clamp and the pushrod, with the cutting means visible, as stand-alone. The cutting means 15 is arranged interior to the member 7, so as to prevent the user not to get in physical contact with the cutting means during non-use.
Figure 8 schematically illustrates the second 2 clamp and the gripping means 33 as stand alone when the second clamp is integrated into the clamping and cutting device. The gripping means 33, preferably O-ring shaped, are arranged on the member 7, configured for the user to engage with the gripping means with fingers.
The gripping means 33 further comprises a gripping surface 34, such as bulges, or a surface section made from rubber or a rubbery material for increased friction, arranged on the inside of the gripping means 33. This ensures a better grip for the user's fingers of the gripping means 33.
Figure 9 schematically illustrates a first 1 or second 2 clamp according to an embodiment of the present invention. In the embodiment show in figure 9, the first 1 and/or second 2 clamp further comprises a protrusion 39 arranged on the contact section 24 and an indentation 40 arranged on the recessed section 22. The protrusion 39 and indentation 40 are configured for assuring a controlled closure of the first 1 and/or second 2 clamp. Alternatively, in an another embodiment of the present invention, the first 1 and/or second 2 clamp further comprises a protrusion 39 arranged on the recessed section 22 and an indentation 40 arranged on the contact section 24 (not shown in figure 9). The protrusion 39 and indentation 40 are configured for assuring a controlled closure of the first 1 and/or second 2 clamp.
During closure of the first 1 and/or second 2 clamp, the indentation 40 will receive protrusion 39, ensuring that the second 4a,4b and third 5a, 5b leg closes parallel to each other and not misalign with each other; thus ensuring a more controlled closure of the clamp. The clamping and cutting device according to the present invention is useful for a number of medical uses where clamping of an object is required. For use, an object to be clamped is placed inside the cavity formed by the three legs 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b and 5a, 5b. The clamp is then gripped with the fingers and the first 1 and second 2 leg pressed together until the locking members 20, 21 engage and the appendage 27 is secured behind the dog 26. Alternatively, other means than the fingers may be used for applying force on the clamp in order to close it.
The first clamp 1 of the present invention may however be used in any suitable device and its use is not limited to the hereinafter disclosed embodiment.
Similarly, the second clamp 2 of the present invention may also be used in any suitable device and its use is not limited to the hereinafter disclosed embodiment.
Figure 10A illustrates a schematically view of a clamp holder 16 without clamps, where both the first clamp and the second clamp are detachable from the clamp holder 16 i.e. the second clamp is reversibly attached. The clamp holder 16 comprises gripping means 33 and supporting means 11, 12, 13, 14 for supporting the first and second clamps when being attached to the clamp holder 16. Figure 10B illustrates a schematically view of a clamp holder 16 where the first and second clamp are detachable from the clamp holder 16 and where a push rod 19 is inserted into the clamp holder. The clamp holder 16 comprises gripping means 33 and supporting means 14. The cutting device comprises a push rod 19 having a pusher section 10 and cutting means 15. The cutting device is slid between the supporting means 14 supporting the first and the second clamp. The cutting device further illustrates a second chock 41, which helps detaching the second clamp from the clamp holder.
In one embodiment, the cutting device may comprise both a first chock and a second chock to be able to help detaching both the first and the second clamp, respectively, from the clamp holder.
The clamp and cutting device further comprises means 11, 12, 13, 14 for supporting the first and second clamps side by side with a distance in between one another so as to allow the cutting means 15 to advance between said first and second clamp. The means 11, 12, 13, 14 are configured for guiding the first clamp and the second clamp in a sliding movement within the clamp holder 16 to advance the cutting means 15 between the first and second clamps to cut an object in use while the legs of the first clamp and second clamp, clamps and/or 5 compresses the object, to assure a firm grip on the clamped object.
By then pressing the pusher section 10 with the thumb as if operating a syringe, the push rod is pushed against the member 7 and the cutting means 15 is driven towards the object clamped by the first and second clamps and the second chock
10 41 and possibly the first chock (not shown) synchronously slide the second clamp and possibly the first clamp through the clamp holder 16. The object e.g. an umbilical cord is thereby cut by the cutting means 15. After the cut, the second clamp and possibly the first clamp are disengaged from the clamping and cutting device as it has slid out of the clamp holder 16 by moving past the supporting
15 means 11, 12, 13 and 14 and the clamp holder 16.
The first clamp remains closed due to the locking members and stays on the baby's umbilical cord stump. The disengaged second clamp remains closed also due to the locking members, thus clamping off the umbilical cord on the mother's 20 side.
Figure 11 illustrates an embodiment of a clamp 1,2 having a first leg 3a, 3b, a second leg 4a, 4b and a third leg 5a, 5b. The clamp 1,2 further comprises a recessed section 22 and an indentation 40 on the second leg 4a, 4b which interacts
25 with a contact section 24 and a protrusion 39 on the third leg 5a, 5b. In addition, the clamp 1,2 comprises teeth having a flat tip 42. The flat tip 42 of the teeth distal to the inner surface of the leg 3a,3b,4a,4b,5a,5b enables the clamping surfaces to firmly hold the object in the position as when closed and prevent the object from sliding in the clamped grip by the clamping and cutting device.
30 Furthermore, the flat tip enables the closure of the clamping surfaces to be tight preventing leakage from e.g. an umbilical cord when cut.
Figure 12A-D illustrate different steps in the process of clamping an umbilical cord 43 in a clamp 1,2.
35 Figure 12A illustrates an open clamp 1,2 having a first leg 3a, 3b, a second leg 4a, 4b and a third leg 5a, 5b, where an umbilical cord 43 is arranged in the cavity between the legs 3a,3b,4a,4b,5a,5b. The umbilical cord 43 is shown in a cross- sectional view. In the closing of the clamp 1,2, the second leg 4a, 4b interacts with 5 the third leg 5a, 5b whereby the third leg 5a, 5b is pressed towards the first leg 3a, 3b. Hereby, the cavity between the legs is narrowed and the umbilical cord 43 is compressed (Figure 12B).
Figure 12C-D illustrates when the clamp 1,2 is clamped around the umbilical cord 10 43 in a locked position. The umbilical cord 43 is compressed and hereby prevents leakage of blood from the umbilical cord 43 when cut. On either side of the clamp 1,2, the umbilical cord 43 will stay decompressed (Figure 12D).
Figure 12E illustrates a schematically view of a closed and locked clamp 1,2 15 showing that no or substantially no cavity between the legs 3a,3b,4a,4b,5a,5b is present.
