- a method for control of User Equipment initiated change of network slices in a mobile system using network slicing including at least one step performed by at least one of the thus configured: mobile network entity supporting at least Mobility Management and subscription control functions such as AMF, User Equipment UE, mobile network subscriber database such as SDM.
- FIG. 1 is intended to illustrate in a simplified way NSSAI and its use in a mobile system using network slicing
- FIG. 2 is intended to illustrate in a simplified way an example of signaling exchanged during a registration procedure according to embodiments of the invention.
- a UE In the scope of 3GPP TR 23.799 and TS 23.501 and TS23.502 it is possible for a UE to be simultaneously attached to more than one Network slice, via a single function called AMF.
- the AMF can be specialized for the set of Network slices the UE is attached to. So different combinations of Network slices may drive allocation of the UE to adifferent AMF via rerouting to the more optimal AMF.
- a network slice is conceptually like an end to end network. It is identified by the value of a S- SSAI that is composed by a Slice Service Type (SST) value and a Slice Differentiator (SD) value.
- SST Slice Service Type
- SD Slice Differentiator
- the set of slices a UE intends to use or is accepted by the network to use is defined by the NSSAI which is the collection of the S-NSSAIs of the slices that the UE is using.
- a UE may subscribe to a set of slices that can share the AMF and to a set of slices that need a dedicated AMF. When the latter type of slices are used, only one such slice a at time can be used.
- the UE subscribes to the network slices it is authorized to use. These are stored as subscribed to S- NSSAI in the SDM.
- the network should be aware of which of these require a dedicated AMF. There is no known method to understand this in the network so this Isolation criterion can be met.
- the UE can change the set of slices it is currently using by a registration procedure by including a NSSAI that differs from the currently active NSSAI (e.g. a new NSSAI with a different set of S-NSSAIs).
- the network decides whether to change the set or not and if so what the accepted set is (by returning an Accepted NSSAI to the UE).
- When a UE includes an Isolated network slice in the request all other slices must be released if the network allows the UE to change to an Isolated slice. This also triggers a AMF relocation.
- Some PL s may want to pin the AMF handling the UE and not allow the UE to initiate the change of slices the UE is using as the UE is assumed to always use all the slices it has subscribed to. To this effect the network has to control the UE so it does not start registration procedures to change the set of slices it is using. This avoids needless signaling in the network. However this cannot work if a UE has a mix of non isolated and isolated slices it subscribes to. So the network may decide to by default allocate the UE to the shared slices unless the UE requests a dedicated slice.
- Embodiments of the invention solve the issue of Pinning a UE to a set of slices but allowing it to at any point of time to shift to one isolated slice (or a set of isolated slices that share e.g. the SD field, which is a differentiator that allows to allocate different slice types to a tenant).
- Document S2-170139 proposes to allocate a single identifier of the Core Network node. This is described as follows:
- Proposal x A network PLMN which assigns AMFs, to a UE, supporting all the UE subscribed network slices, may assign the UE a single NSSAI value, which is used to select such AMF. The UE will use that NSSAI single value in procedures common to more than one network slice e.g. Registration requests.”
- Proposal y A UE that is assigned a single NSSAI value (to an AMF serving all the subscribed network slices) does not trigger any NAS MM messages to change S-NSSAI(s) configuration.”
- the RAN may not support all of the Network slices supported by a UE in the location where the UE is, so we need a finer granularity of control than "all or nothing" as proposed in the 52-170139, In fact uniform support of the RAN part of a Network slice is guaranteed per
- Registration area i.e. the area where the UE has been registered by the AMF during a registration procedure, as indicated by a list of Tracking areas that define the Registration area. So, in real life deployments, it is possible that some Network slices are not supported by certain cells in certain Tracking areas.
- Embodiments of the invention propose an alternate approach that does not require AMF explicit identification and this explicit identification to implicitly pin the UE to all the subscribed-to Network Slices.
- the Core Network may indicate to the UE, e.g. in Registration procedures ⁇ which are always including the Accepted NSSAI ), e.g. in a Registration Accept message, whether the UE is allowed to change the slice set in the Accepted NSSAI. This is illustrated in the example of figure 2 with the indication "Slices Pinning/Control flags".
- the Core Network may also indicate to the UE whether this applies just to move to a SST+SD value (or set of values) that cannot share the same AMF with currently used S-NSSAI values, or also to change the active slices set in the set of slices that are currently active. This is illustrated in the example of figure 2 with the indication "Slices Pinning/Control flags".
- the SDM may include in subscription data for each S-NSSAI, one or more of:
- the UE configuration should be aware of which slices need a dedicated AMF and which can share AMF with any other slice, or whether a slice can share the AMF with other skies with same SD field. In some embodiments, when the UE receives an indication of pinning, it shall not attempt change of slices set.
- the UE when the UE receives indication it is allowed to change AMF to use isolated slices only, it can only abandon all the slices it is currently using and move to Isolated slices set.
- UE if the UE is allowed to change slices it can also shange the slices it is using inside the non isolated slices set (UE is not pinned to any slices).
- the UE that receives the single value NSSAI for use in the RAN is supposed to not initiate a change of set of slices it may use. This is perceived as a limitation. In the event an operator did not want to change AMF supporting the UE even if the UE requests a slice change there is the option to not change AMF indeed from operator side by allocating the UE to a general purpose AMF. However this would assume the operator finds not beneficial to reroute the UE to a more optimal AMF for the slices the UE declares it intends to use (which may be a small subset of those the UE subscribes to) . Indeed an operator may base the rerouting on observed behaviour and hysteresis if the concern is frequent change of AMF.
- Another approach is to, in some embodiments, include in the Registration Accept message that provides the Accepted NSSAI to the UE a Flag indicating to the UE that its AMF is pinned and therefore there is no need for the UE to indicate change of Slices set as the operator policy for the UE is to not change AMF, so virtually the UE is assumed to be always accepted on all slices indicated in the Accepted NSSAI.
- this may limit the deployment and service scenarios in that a UE may subscribe also to slices that need a dedicated AMF (like slices sharing a certain value of SD field or an isolated slice with certain SST+SD that requires a dedicated AMF.
- the operator may also fine tune the information further and add another flag stating whether the UE is allowed instead to change slices by selecting e.g. slices it is configured to use that require isolation of AMF or AMF dedicated per SD field .
- Embodiments of the invention thus allow flexible design in coexistence of different kinds of slices including isolated and non isolated slices.
- Various aspects and/or embodiments of the invention include (though not being limited to) following aspects and/or embodiments.
