PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM, PARTICULARLY FOR MAKING ELECTRONIC PAYMENTS
The present invention relates to a personal identification system that is particularly, although not exclusively, useful and practical in the field of electronic payments for purchasing goods and/or services at commercial concerns in general, such as for example bars, restaurants, shops or retail supermarkets, and so on.
At present, various personal identification solutions are known which make it possible for a user to identify him/herself to third parties. For example, consider the field of electronic payments, in which a user can pay a commercial concern where he/she is making a purchase by way of electronic payment instruments, such as for example personal debit or credit cards, i.e. that are associated solely with the user and on which at least said user's name and surname are shown.
Or, again by way of example, consider personal identification documents, i.e. that are associated solely with the user and on which at least said user's name and surname are shown, issued by state or government authorities, or more generally by legally-recognized authorities, which are used nowadays worldwide by millions of users to identify themselves to third parties; typical examples of these identification documents are the identity card, the passport, and the driver's license.
However, these conventional solutions are not devoid of drawbacks, among which is the fact that all of them are distributed on a respective physical medium, commonly constituted by a paper booklet, by a plastic card, or by a smart card that comprises a microchip.
Returning to the field of electronic payments, a user who has for example two debit cards and two credit cards, using the conventional solutions, would have to bring with him/herself four different physical media, one for each of the four electronic payment cards.
It seems clear that, in a situation like the example described above, the user is forced to manage and handle a plurality of physical media, which inevitably take up space, being cumbersome or in any case inconvenient to bring along, and which need to be organized (for example into groups) in order to keep their use easy and efficient.
This inconvenience of transport and this need for organization appear even more evident if one considers the fact that, nowadays, the number of these physical media that the user has to bring with him/her is always increasing; in fact, in addition to electronic payment instruments and state or government identification documents, the use is increasingly widespread of physical media similar to those described, in commercial initiatives to increase the loyalty of the customer, for example in order to offer special promotions and/or to track the purchases made by the customer, or in public services, for example in order to facilitate and speed up access by the user and/or to make the services themselves more efficient.
The aim of the present invention is to overcome the above mentioned drawbacks of the known art, by devising a personal identification system, particularly for making electronic payments, that makes it possible to minimize the number and the space occupation of the physical media associated solely with a user and used by him/her in order to identify him/herself to third parties.
Within this aim, an object of the present invention is to conceive a personal identification system, particularly for making electronic payments, that makes it possible to facilitate and speed up the execution of electronic payment operations by a user.
Another object of the present invention is to devise a personal identification system, particularly for making electronic payments, that makes it possible to rationalize and organize the various personal identification solutions associated solely with a user and used by him or her in order to identify him/herself to third parties.
Another object of the present invention is to conceive a personal identification system, particularly for making electronic payments, that makes it possible for a user to select in each instance the personal identification solution associated solely with the user and which the user needs at a given time in order to identify him/herself to third parties.
Another object of the present invention is to devise a personal identification system, particularly for making electronic payments, that makes it possible to increase the degree of security and confidentiality of the personal identification operations of a user, in particular in the area of electronic payment operations.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a personal identification system, particularly for making electronic payments, that is highly reliable, easily and practically implemented, and low cost when compared to the known art.
This aim and these and other objects which will become better apparent hereinafter are achieved by a personal identification system, particularly for making electronic payments, which comprises a portable identification device in the possession of a first user, a local processing device operated by a second user, and a remote processing device that comprises remote storage means, said local processing device and said remote processing device being connected to a telematic communications network, characterized in that said portable identification device comprises a module for generating at least one marker, a module for encrypting at least one unique identification code, an e-paper screen adapted to display said at least one marker, and means of commanding said generation module operated by said first user, said at least one marker being readable by said local processing device and comprising said at least one unique identification code, said at least one unique identification code corresponding to a record comprised in said remote storage means and comprising personal identification information belonging to said first user.
Further characteristics and advantages of the invention will become better apparent from the detailed description of a preferred, but not exclusive, embodiment of the personal identification system, particularly for making electronic payments, according to the invention, which is illustrated by way of non-limiting example with the aid of the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 3 is a block diagram that schematically illustrates an embodiment of the local processing device operated by a second user of a personal identification system, particularly for making electronic payments, according to the present invention;
Figure 4 is a block diagram that schematically illustrates an embodiment of the remote processing device of a personal identification system, particularly for making electronic payments, according to the present invention;
Figures 5a and 5b are respectively a front elevation view and a rear elevation view of an embodiment of the portable identification device in the possession of a first user of a personal identification system, particularly for making electronic payments, according to the present invention.
With reference to the cited figures, the personal identification system, particularly for making electronic payments, according to the invention, generally designated by the reference numeral 10, comprises substantially a portable identification device 14 in the possession of a first user 12, a local processing device 18 operated by a second user 16, and a remote processing device 22; the local processing device 18 and the remote processing device 22 being connected to a telematic communications network 20, such as for example the internet.
The portable identification device 14 is adapted to allow the first user 12 to select, from a set of available modes, the mode with which to identify him/herself to third parties, for example at a commercial concern where he/she is making a purchase; in other words, the portable identification device 14 is adapted to allow the first user 12 to select, from a set of available types of personal identification information, the type of personal information that he/she wants to use in order to identify him/herself to third parties.
For example, the set of types of personal identification information associated solely with the first user 12 can comprise one or more credit cards, one or more debit cards, the identity card, the passport, the driver's license.
Also, the portable identification device 14 is adapted to generate and encode markers 50 which can be read by the local processing device 18 operated by the second user 16, for example a sales clerk of a commercial concern where the first user 12 is making a purchase.
Furthermore, the portable identification device 14 is adapted to display the above-mentioned markers 50, so that they can be read by the local processing device 18 operated by the second user 16.
The markers 50 are graphical and, as mentioned, can be read by the local processing device 18. Each individual marker 50 is adapted to contain inside it, i.e. to store, a single unique identification code that points to a corresponding record, comprised in the remote storage means 42 of the remote processing device 22, where personal identification information belonging to the first user 12 is stored, the type of which was previously selected by said first user 12.
For example, the personal identification information associated solely with the first user 12, of the type selected by said first user 12, can comprise JOHN SMITH and the credit card no. 1234 5678 1234 5678; or JOHN SMITH and the passport no. ABO 123456.
In general, the record corresponding to the unique identification codes stored in the markers 50 store personal identification information of the first user 12, comprising various items of personal information, as will be seen in detail hereinafter in the present description.
In this manner, the second user 16 can identify the first user 12, by interrogating the remote processing device 22 after reading a marker 50 and consequently identifying the unique identification code; therefore, the identification of the first user 12 occurs on the basis of the personal identification information stored in the record corresponding to the unique identification code identified.
The markers 50 can be implemented using various conventional techniques and technologies. In a preferred embodiment of the personal identification system 10, particularly for making electronic payments, according to the invention, the marker 50 comprises a one-dimensional (ID) or two-dimensional (2D) barcode, such as for example a QR code (Quick Response Code).
The portable identification device 14 comprises a control unit 24, a module 28 for generating at least one marker 50, a module 29 for encrypting at least one unique identification code, an e-paper screen 26 adapted to display the at least one marker 50, and command means 30 operated by the first user 12.
The control unit 24 is the main functional element of the portable identification device 14 of the system 10 according to the invention, and for this reason it is connected and in communication with the other operating and/or functional elements that are comprised in the portable identification device 14.
The control unit 24 is provided with suitable capacity for processing and for interfacing with the other elements of the portable identification device 14, and it is configured to command, control and coordinate the operation of the elements of the portable identification device 14 with which it is connected and in communication.
Furthermore, the control unit 24 is configured to execute the processing operations on the data originating from the generation module 28, relating to the generation of the markers 50, and from the encryption module 29, relating to the encryption of the unique identification codes that point to corresponding records, which are comprised in the remote storage means 42 of the remote processing device 22.
The module 28 for generating markers 50 of the portable identification device 14 is adapted to generate and encode the markers 50 that the first user 12 will show to the second user 16 in order to be identified by the latter.
In practice, the generation module 28 is configured to encode the unique identification code corresponding to the record in which the personal identification information of the first user 12 is stored, so that this unique identification code is compatible with the implementation technique or technology of the markers 50, which can comprise a one-dimensional (ID) or two-dimensional (2D) barcode, such as for example a QR code (Quick Response Code).
The module 29 for encrypting unique identification codes of the portable identification device 14 is adapted to encrypt the unique identification code to be stored in each marker 50, consequently increasing the degree of security and confidentiality of the system, this unique identification code pointing to a single record comprised in the remote storage means 42 of the remote processing device 22.
The unique identification codes are encrypted by the encryption module 29 according to conventional encryption techniques and algorithms, for example symmetric key or private key algorithms, where the same key is used for both the encryption and the decryption of the message, and asymmetric key or public key algorithms, where one key is used for the encryption and another for the decryption.
The e-paper screen 26 of the portable identification device 14 is adapted to display the markers 50 generated by the generation module 28, so that they can be read by the local processing device 18 operated by the second user 16.
E-paper, also known as electronic paper, is a screen technology designed to imitate the appearance of ink on a normal sheet of paper, by reflecting ambient light just like a sheet of paper, instead of using a backlight behind the screen to illuminate the pixels, such as for example LCD technology.
The means 30 of commanding the portable identification device 14 are adapted to allow the first user 12 to interact in input with the portable identification device 14 during the selection, from a set of available modes, of the mode with which to identify him/herself to third parties, in particular to the second user 16.
In particular, the command means 30 are configured to allow the first user 12 to select, from a set of available types of personal identification information, the type of personal information that he/she wants to use in order to identify him/herself to third parties, in particular to the second user 16.
Furthermore, the command means 30 are adapted to launch, as a consequence of the above-mentioned selection, first the encryption process, by way of the encryption module 29, and then the encoding process, by way of the generation module 28, of a unique identification code that points to a corresponding record, comprised in the remote storage means 42 of the remote processing device 22, where personal identification information of the first user 12 is stored, the type of which was previously selected by said first user 12.
In an embodiment of the personal identification system 10, particularly for making electronic payments, according to the invention, the means 30 of commanding the portable identification device 14 comprise one or more buttons.
In an embodiment of the personal identification system 10, particularly for making electronic payments, according to the invention, the means 30 of commanding the portable identification device 14 comprise a touch screen.
In practice, the first user 12, in possession of the portable identification device 14, uses the command means 30 to select the type of personal identification information that he/she wants to use; this type of personal identification information of the first user 12 is associated with a unique identification code which is first encrypted by way of the encryption module 29 and then encoded by way of the generation module 28, in order to generate a marker 50 that comprises the same unique identification code; finally, the marker 50 thus generated is displayed via the e-paper screen 26.
Therefore, the marker 50 displayed by the portable identification device 14 changes in each instance, for example following an explicit request from the first user 12 by way of the command means 30, or following a preset time interval.
The portable identification device 14 further comprises power supply means 27, preferably long-lasting, which are adapted to electrically power the portable identification device 14, in particular the elements comprised in the portable identification device 14 proper.
