Abstract

The present invention refers to a device for organizing and transporting swabs with biological samples in the form of a box or casing formed by two rectangular bodies, an upper one and a lower one, articulated to each other at one of the sides thereof so that they can be opened and closed by means of a closure. The device contains sections allowing separating the swabs with and without samples, as well as information about the origin thereof.

Description

DEVICE FOR ORGANIZING AND TRANSPORTING SWABS WITH
BIOLOGICAL SAMPLES
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
The present invention may be included in the technical field of medical and laboratory equipment, in particular, handling of specimens and sample preparation. More particularly, the object of the invention refers to a device which allows organizing, storing and isolating biological samples, contained in two or more swabs from an individual or organism, for several genetic applications or the like, for example, paternity affairs and alike, pathogen identification, determination of mutations causing a genetic disease, genetic diversity studies, among others.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The cell samples contained in swabs require a device for transporting them safely and without risk of exchange or transposition thereof. A closed and well labelled device would minimize the possibilities for confusing the samples or contaminating those with other surfaces impregnated with biological material. When reaching the laboratory, it is advisable that samples from the same individual stay and are handled together. Additionally, the swab-containing boxes could be stored in a different device created especially for storing and organizing the individual devices.
The majority of the current solutions are designed for transporting a single swab even though, for some applications, more than one swab containing the sample is required per individual. The existing swab collection kits are varied and include either partial or complete protection thereof. Additionally, some of them are more elaborated than others. The present invention provides a device having the advantage, among others, that it can store several swabs. DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The present invention refers to a device for transporting two or more swabs with cell samples from an individual, all together and without touching the surface of the device or other surface.
The device of the invention is a rectangular box, made of plastic or other material, which can be frozen after being filled with the labelled swabs. Thereby, preferably, the material, of which the device is made, can undergo freezing.
Thus, a first aspect of the invention refers to a device for organizing and transporting swabs with biological samples, characterized in that the device comprises:
• two rectangular bodies, an upper one used as a lid and a lower one, articulated to each other at one side thereof in such a way that the device can be opened and closed, wherein
the lower body comprises, at the inner side thereof:
- elevations in the form of rectangles comprising rings with openings having the swab width for the swabs to be snapped in, and
oval recesses, of a bigger size than that of the swab heads, onto which said heads will be arranged, and
• a closure comprising an elevation at one of the bodies configured for fitting in a recess located at the other body. In a preferred embodiment, the upper body comprises, at the outer side thereof, a recess for placing a label with information on the content of the device. In a preferred embodiment, the inner side of the upper body comprises a pocket to keep swabs before taking the sample.
Preferably, the device shall be of a similar colour to that of the swab being transported therein, and its length will depend on the amount of swabs to be transported.
Several applications in research or genetic tests demand, sometimes, more than one swab for the organism under study. The existence of more swabs is advisable and valuable upon the need for replacing samples due to accidental mistakes or faults of the equipment, results confirmation, a great amount of DNA being required and/or external controls in reference laboratories, among others. The advantage of a device as that of the present invention for several swabs is even more valuable for samples from distant or difficult access locations, where establishing contact with the client is more complex. Likewise, these containers could be distributed in a country for selling and offering genetic services more easily.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The following figures are shown with an illustrative and non-limiting purpose:
FIG. 1 .- It shows an inside view of the device of the invention.
FIG. 2.- It shows a view of the device closure.
FIG. 3.- It shows an inside view of the upper body of the device.
FIG. 4.- It shows a detail of the swab arrangement in the lower body of the device.
FIG. 5.- It shows an outside view of the upper body of the device PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION
The following is a detailed description, with the help of the attached figures 1 - 5 referred above, of an exemplary preferred embodiment of the device for transporting swabs with biological samples.
The swab transporting device of the invention is intended for organizing, transporting and isolating swabs with samples and information of the origin thereof.
FIG 1 shows the device in the form of a box or casing comprising an upper body (1 ) and a lower body (2), wherein the lid-like upper body (1 ) comprises a pocket (3) for keeping swabs (8) therein before taking the samples, whereas the lower body comprises elevations in the form of rectangles (4) with rings having openings having the swab width (approx. 3 mm) for the swabs to be snapped in after taking the samples.
Likewise, the lower body (2) comprises oval recesses (7) featuring aeration for preventing fungi from growing, these recesses (7) being some millimetres bigger than the swab head. The amount of recesses (7) will depend on the amount of swabs to be transported.
At the outer area of the upper body (1 ) the device is provided with a recess (9) for placing a label onto which information will be registered about the individual or organism from which the sample was taken. The label may include name, age, place and date of birth, identity card number and/or identification for the laboratory (see FIG. 5). Inside the upper body it can be considered to include, if necessary, oval recesses, being similar and corresponding to those located inside the lower body, so that the head of the swabs do not touch any surface, but they remain positioned between both recesses. The device comprises a closure formed by an elevation (6) at the inner side of one of the bodies, for example, the upper body (1 ), configured for being fitted into a recess (5) located at the inner side of the other body, for example, the lower body (2). This closure can be observed in FIG. 1 and in FIG. 2, which shows exclusively a detail thereof.
The pocket (3) for keeping swabs before taking the samples, can be seen in detail in FIG. 3.
FIG. 4 shows a detail of the swabs (8) arrangement into the elevations in the form of rectangles (4) and into the oval recesses (7).
The devices may be transported individually or all together, using colour differentiation in a second carrying box. It will be very useful for those cases requiring the samples to be separated, but in the same container, for example two or three people for one case.
This second box or casing could have compartments for containing the original device or casing when there are more than two people or organisms for a same case under study or research. The casings for each individual may be differentiated by colour.
