Description

IMPROVEMENTS TO FRONT LOADING WASTE COLLECTION VEHICLES
FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to front loading waste collection vehicles and in particular to the hopper and compactor of these collection vehicles. The present invention has particular but not exclusive application for the collection of waste (including recyclable materials). The present invention can be used for the handling of other materials particularly large volumes of materials.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Front loading waste collection vehicles have been used to collect different waste types from larger rubbish bins typically up to 3m3 in size. These bins are lifted over a forward cab portion of the vehicle. After the rubbish bin is lifted above the vehicle, it is then inverted and the waste or recyclable material is emptied into a hopper which directs the waste into a compaction chamber of the vehicle.
A hydraulically actuated ejection blade is positioned forward of the hopper during the loading process, allowing waste to enter through the hopper and into the compaction chamber. After the waste is received in the compaction chamber, the waste is moved towards the rear of the compaction chamber and compacted by the ejection blade. The ejection blade is shaped to fit closely to the profile of the compaction chamber and moves in a longitudinal direction. Compaction of the waste maximizes the amount of waste that can be collected by the waste collection vehicle.
When the compaction chamber is full and the waste is ready to be discharged, a rear cover is opened and the ejection blade is actuated, travelling the length of the compaction chamber to eject the load.
However, with the current hopper, ejection blade and compaction chamber configuration there are a number of problems including maceration of the waste caused when waste is passed through and forced up against heavy and liquid waste already resting on the floor of the chamber. Consequently, compaction density is poor and recyclable material can be damaged (torn, shredded or compacted into a solid mass) making it harder to sort for recycling.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
In order that the present invention can be more readily understood reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention and wherein:
Figure 1 is a schematic top view of the front loading waste collection vehicle of the preferred embodiment;
Figure 2 is a schematic side view of the front loading waste collection vehicle with the compactor in the charge position; and
Figure 3 is a schematic side view of the front loading waste collection vehicle with the compactor in the compaction position.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
With reference to the figures, there is shown a hopper 10 and a waste collection bin 12 of a front loading waste collection vehicle (not shown). The front loading waste collection vehicle (not shown) also has a pair of lift arms 14 movably attached thereto. A pair of lift arm tines 16 are attached to the lift arms 14. The lift arms 14 and the lift arm tines 16 are adapted to lift a rubbish bin (not shown) above the vehicle, and invert the rubbish bin to empty waste or recyclable material into the hopper 10.
Within the bin 12 there is a collection chamber 36
Within the hopper 10, there is a compactor 18 that is pivotally mounted to the hopper 10 at pivot point 20. The compactor 18 is operated by a hydraulic or pneumatic ram 22 that moves the compactor 18 between a charge position and a compaction position. The compactor 18 moves adjacent a front wall 24 of the hopper 10. The
Substitute Sheet
(Rule 26) RO/AU front wall 24 is partially curved and has a radius of about 1400mm. The compactor 18 has an extended hammer portion 26 with a substantially flat striking face 28.
The hopper 10 has a waste inlet 30 and a discharge outlet 32. The discharge outlet 32 is located approximately 150mm above a floor 34 of the collection chamber 36. The front wall 38 within the collection chamber 36 has a section 40 below the discharge outlet 32. In an alternate embodiment (not shown), the section 40 below the discharge outlet 32 is angled to avoid square corners where liquid waste can accumulate and cause rusting in the floor 34 of the bin 12.
The front loading waste collection vehicle (not shown) also has a rear opening door 42. When waste in the collection chamber 36 is to be emptied, the bin 12 is tilted such that waste exits the collection chamber 36 through an opened rear opening door 42 under the force of gravity.
In use, waste is passed into the hopper 10 through the waste inlet 30. The compactor 18 moves from the charge position (as seen in Figure 2) to the compaction position (as seen in Figure 3) pushing the waste out of the hopper 10 and into the collection chamber 36 of the waste bin 12. The compactor 18 pushes waste through the discharge outlet 32. The compactor 18 itself moves through the discharge outlet 32 to ensure the waste is moved to the collection chamber 34 and compacts the waste so that it passes over any liquid and heavy waste resting on the floor 34. This action achieves a compact waste density that is a relatively higher and less damaged than with the comparative prior art compaction. Further the density of the waste is substantially uniform of the collected waste but still allows for the different waste to be sorted at a later stage.
ADVANTAGES
The advantage of the preferred embodiment includes improved waste pack density and reduction of damage to the compacted waste. Positioning the hopper outlet above the collection chamber floor so that there is a significant step down to the floor and having angled or curved lower walls within the collection chamber allows the heavy and liquid waste to remain below the incoming waste stream and thereby eliminating the maceration of food waste, improving pack density and thus improving payload, allowing recyclable product although densely packed to be separated for recycling and reducing wear and tear on the packing apparatus.
Substitute Sheet
(Rule 26) RO/AU Furthermore, the curved or angled lower walls in the collection chamber prevents an accumulation of waste in the forward corners of the waste bin which causes rusting in the forward body corners.
The use of a pivotably mounted compactor in the hopper allows liquid up to a higher level in the collection chamber compared to a front loading waste collection vehicle having an ejection blade that moves in a longitudinal direction.
The action of the compactor is enhanced particularly for green waste applications (e.g. garden pruning refuse) by extending and reshaping the leading face of the compactor so that the reshaped compactor with a flat or convex striking face so that it extends further in to the waste bin enhancing the packing action and reducing the tendency for the waste to return to the hopper.
Counterintuitively, although the use of a hopper and a pivotal compactor in a front loading waste collection vehicle reduces the size of the collection chamber compared to a front loading waste collection vehicle having a compaction chamber (collection chamber) and ejection blade, the use of a hopper and a pivotal compactor in a front loading waste collection vehicle takes advantage of improved pack density and reduced damage to the compacted waste.
VARIATIONS
It will of course be realised that while the foregoing has been given by way of illustrative example of this invention, all such and other modifications and variations thereto as would be apparent to persons skilled in the art are deemed to fall within the broad scope and ambit of this invention as is herein set forth.
Throughout the description and claims of this specification the word "comprise" and variations of that word such as "comprises" and "comprising", are not intended to exclude other additives, components, integers or steps
