Description

NASAL CANNULA ADAPTERS
REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION
[0001] This application claims priority from U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 62/366,191, filed July 25, 2016, the entire content of which is incorporated herein by reference.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0002] The present invention relates generally to nasal cannula adapters and, more specifically, to adapters for permitting use of an operating room (OR) nasal cannula in a non-OR settings, or vice versa.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The Mac-Safe™ CO monitoring nasal cannula, as shown in Fig. 1, is specially designed to provide supplemental oxygen while simultaneously sampling end-tidal carbon dioxide. The cannula provides oxygen through two longer bottom ports 16, while nasal prongs 18 collect expired gases that can be tested through the sampling line. The cannula comes with an oxygen connector 14 and a connector 106 which is designed to connect to a sampling machine used in an operating-room setting, e.g., a FLOW® sampling machine, which is illustrated at 210 in Fig. 7. The connector 14 of a Mac-Safe™ nasal cannula is connected to the connector 212 of the sampling machine through an adapter having two female connectors, primarily used in an operating-room setting.
[0004] However, the connector 106 of a Mac-Safe™ CO monitoring nasal cannula might not fit a sampling machine, such as a MicroStream® sampling machine, which is illustrated as 110 in Fig. 4 and designed to be used primarily in pre- and post- operation settings.
[0005] A Smart CapnoLine nasal cannula, as shown in Fig. 2, is designed to be connected to a MicroStream® sampling machine. The Smart CapnoLine nasal cannula has a connector 208 which is ordinarily designed to be threaded into a connector 114 of the sampling machine 110 in Fig. 4 for use in a non-operating-room setting.
[0006] Currently, patients often use Mac-Safe™ nasal cannulas during the operation. If they were hooked to a Smart CapnoLine nasal cannula pre-operation, nurses will switch to a Mac-Safe™ nasal cannulas to prep for the operation. After the operation, the patients will need to be switched back to a Smart CapnoLine nasal cannula.
[0007] The repetitive switching causes inconvenience and discomfort. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0008] The present invention provides an adapter. In one embodiment, the adapter is designed to convert a nasal cannula for an operating-room (OR) setting to use for a non- operating-room (non-OR) setting. Specifically, the adapter connects to the OR nasal cannula on one end and connects to the non-OR end-tidal sampling machine on the other end. The adapter according to this embodiment may be called an OR to non-OR adapter.
[0009] In an alternative embodiment, the adapter is called a non-OR to OR adapter. The non-OR to OR adapter is designed to convert a non-OR nasal cannula to use for an OR setting. Specifically, the non-OR to OR adapter connects to the non-OR nasal cannula on one end and connects to the OR end-tidal sampling machine on the other end.
[0010] As evidenced by the discussion above, both a OR to non-OR adapter and a non-OR to OR adapter include an adapter body and two end portions. The adapter bodies may include a tab for easy handling. The adapters may be made from suitable materials, such as plastic.
[0011] In some embodiments, the end portion of an OR to non-OR adapter which connects to the OR nasal cannula includes a center tube for engaging a center cavity of the nasal cannula used in an operating-room setting.
[0012] In some embodiments, the end portion of a non-OR to OR adapter which connects to the OR sampling machine includes a center tube for engaging a center cavity of the sampling machine used in an operating-room setting.
[0013] The present invention provides a method of connecting a nasal cannula used in an operating-room setting having an end with a first outer thread to a sampling machine used in a non-operating-room setting such that the nasal cannula used in an operating-room setting can be used in a non-operating room setting. The sampling machine has a connection adapted to be fitted with a nasal cannula used in a non-operating-room setting having a second outer thread on an end. The first outer thread may be different from the second outer thread.
[0014] The method includes providing an adapter body having an adapter body with two end portions, one end portion having an inner thread adapted to be connected to the first outer thread of the nasal cannula used in an operating-room setting, and the other end portion having a third outer thread substantially the same as the second outer thread;
[0015] The method further includes connecting the one end portion having the inner thread to the first outer thread of the nasal cannula used in an operating-room setting and connecting the other end portion having the third outer thread to the sampling machine used in a non-operating- room setting, whereby the nasal cannula used in an operating-room setting is used in a non- operating-room setting with a sampling machine for use in a non-operating-room setting.
[0016] In an alternative embodiment, the present invention provides a method of connecting a nasal cannula used in a non-operating-room setting having an end with an outer thread to a sampling machine used in an operating-room setting such that the nasal cannula used in a non- operating-room setting can be used in an operating room setting. In an operating-room setting, an operating-room adapter having two ends with inner threads connects the operating-room setting nasal cannula to the operating-room setting sampling machine. The sampling machine has a connection adapted to be fitted with one of the inner threads of the operating-room setting adapter. The operating-room adapter is existing and is different from the adapters of the present invention.
[0017] The present method includes providing an adapter having an adapter body with two end portions, one end portion having a first inner thread adapted to be connected to the outer thread of the nasal cannula used in a non-operating-room setting and the other end portion having a second inner thread adapted to be connected to the sampling machine used in an operating-room setting, wherein the first inner thread is different from the second inner thread.
[0018] The present method further includes connecting the one end portion having the first inner thread to the outer thread of the nasal cannula used in a non-operating-room setting and connecting the other end portion having the second inner thread to the sampling machine used in an operating-room setting, whereby the nasal cannula used in a non-operating-room setting is used in an operating-room setting with a sampling machine for use in an operating-room setting.

[0025] Figure 7 is a schematic view of a non-OR to OR adapter placed next to a non-OR setting nasal cannula and an OR setting sampling machine.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0026] Referring to Fig. 3, one embodiment of an adaptor 100 for connecting an operating room nasal cannula to a sampling machine used in a non-OR setting is shown. Fig. 4 shows a sampling machine 110 for use in a non-OR setting and how an OR to non-OR adapter 100 connects an OR setting nasal cannula 106 to the sampling machine 110 used for a non-OR setting.
[0027] As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the OR to non-OR adapter includes two ends, i.e., an end 102 connecting to the non-OR sampling machine 110 and an end 104 connecting to the OR nasal cannula 106. The OR nasal cannula 106 has an externally threaded connector.
[0028] The end 104 of the adapter 100 connecting to the OR nasal cannula 106 is internally threaded and includes a center tube 120. The externally threaded connector of the OR nasal cannula 106 is threaded into the end 104 and fit snug in the end 104. The center tube 120 engages the center cavity of the connector of the OR nasal cannula 106, as shown in Fig. 4.
[0029] The end 102 of the adapter, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, is similar to the connector 208 of a non-OR nasal cannula in Fig. 2. The end 102 includes an external thread 108 and is adapted to be threaded into the connector 104 of the non-OR sampling machine 110, e.g., a Microstream® sampling machine. The non-OR sampling machine includes a rotatable lever 116, which can be rotated to cover the connector 114 when the connector 114 is not in use. In one example, the OR to non-OR adapter 100 is about 4 ½" long. The diameter of the outer wall on the end 104 is about 10 mm. The diameter of the end 102 is about 7 mm. [0030] Also shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the body of an OR to non-OR adapter 100 includes a tab 112 for ease of screwing.
[0031] Referring now to Figs. 5-7, a non-OR to OR adapter will now be described. A non- OR to OR adapter 200, as illustrated in Figs. 5-7, is designed for connecting a non-OR nasal cannula nozzle 208 to an OR-setting sampling machine 210, for example, a Flow® sampling machine. The non-OR to OR adapter 200 includes one end with an internally threaded cylindrical section 202 for connecting with the non-OR nasal cannula nozzle 208 and the opposite end with a second section 204. The second section 204 includes an internally threaded connection for receiving the connector 212 of the OR-setting flow sampling machine 210, such as the one shown in Fig. 7. The second section 204 may also include a center tube 206 for engaging the center cavity of the connector 212. In Fig. 7, a nasal cannula nozzle 208 for use in a non-OR setting is shown next to a non-OR to OR adapter 200 and an OR-setting sampling machine 210.
[0032] In one example, the diameter of the section 204 is about 10 mm. The outer diameter of the center tube 206 is about 4 mm. This non-OR to OR adapter is essentially the functionally reverse version of the OR to non-OR adapter shown in Fig. 3.
[0033] As will be clear to those of skill in the art, the embodiments of the present invention illustrated and discussed herein may be altered in various ways without departing from the scope or teaching of the present invention. Also, elements and aspects of one embodiment may be combined with elements and aspects of another embodiment. It is the following claims, including all equivalents, which define the scope of the invention.
