본 발명의 일 실시예에 따르면, 기판, 상기 기판 위에 위치하는 복수의 박막 트랜지스터, 상기 박막 트랜지스터와 전기적으로 연결되어 있는 제1 유기 발광 소자를 포함하며, 상기 제1 유기 발광 소자는 제1 전극, 상기 제1 전극 위에 위치하는 정공 주입층 및 정공 수송층을 포함하는 정공층, 상기 정공층 위에 위치하는 황색 발광층, 상기 황색 발광층 위에 위치하는 차단층, 상기 차단층 위에 위치하는 청색 발광층, 상기 청색 발광층 위에 위치하는 전자 수송층 및 전자 주입층을 포함하는 전자층, 상기 전자층 위에 위치하는 제2 전극을 포함하며, 상기 차단층은 상기 정공 수송층과 동일한 물질로 형성된 유기 발광 표시 장치를 제공한다.

Description

유기 발광 표시 장치 및 이의 제조 방법
본 발명은 유기 발광 표시 장치 및 이의 제조 방법에 관한 것이다.
최근 모니터 또는 텔레비전 등의 경량화 및 박형화가 요구되고 있으며, 이러한 요구에 따라 음극선관(cathode ray tube, CRT)이 액정 표시 장치(liquid crystal display, LCD)로 대체되고 있다. 그러나, 액정 표시 장치는 수발광 장치로서 별도의 백라이트(backlight)가 필요할 뿐만 아니라, 응답 속도 및 시야각 등에서 한계가 있다.
최근 이러한 한계를 극복할 수 있는 표시 장치로서, 자발광형 표시소자로 시야각이 넓고 콘트라스트가 우수할 뿐만 아니라 응답시간이 빠르다는 장점을 가진 유기 발광 표시 장치(organic light emitting display device)가 커다란 주목을 받고 있다.
유기 발광 표시 장치는 발광을 위한 유기 발광 소자를 포함하고, 이러한 유기 발광 소자는 하나의 전극으로부터 주입된 전자(electron)와 다른 전극으로부터 주입된 정공(hole)이 발광층에서 결합하여 여기자(exciton)를 형성하고, 여기자가 에너지를 방출하면서 발광한다.
유기 발광 표시 장치 중 백색 유기 발광 표시 장치는 각기 다른 발광층에서 동시에 발광이 일어나면서 여러 가지 색의 빛이 혼합되어 결과적으로 백색 광을 구현하는 표시 장치로서, 일반적으로 비용 절감을 위해 청색과 황색의 두 가지 종류 발광층을 이용하여 백색 광을 구현한다.
본 발명이 이루고자 하는 기술적 과제는 유기 발광 표시 장치의 전면에 황색 발광층을 형성하고 황색 발광층의 적어도 일면에 청색 발광층을 추가로 형성하는 제조 공정을 통해 제조 공정을 단순화 할 수 있는 유기 발광 표시 장치 및 이의 제조 방법을 제공하고자 한다.
이러한 과제를 해결하기 위하여 본 발명의 실시예에 따르면, 기판, 상기 기판 위에 위치하는 복수의 박막 트랜지스터, 상기 박막 트랜지스터와 전기적으로 연결되어 있는 제1 유기 발광 소자를 포함하며, 상기 제1 유기 발광 소자는 제1 전극, 상기 제1 전극 위에 위치하는 정공 주입층 및 정공 수송층을 포함하는 정공층, 상기 정공층 위에 위치하는 황색 발광층, 상기 황색 발광층 위에 위치하는 차단층, 상기 차단층 위에 위치하는 청색 발광층, 상기 청색 발광층 위에 위치하는 전자 수송층 및 전자 주입층을 포함하는 전자층, 상기 전자층 위에 위치하는 제2 전극을 포함하며, 상기 차단층은 상기 정공 수송층과 동일한 물질로 형성된 유기 발광 표시 장치를 제공한다.
상기 박막 트랜지스터와 전기적으로 연결되어 있는 제2 유기 발광 소자를 더 포함하며, 상기 제2 유기 발광 소자는 제1 전극, 상기 제1 전극 위에 위치하는 정공 주입층 및 정공 수송층을 포함하는 정공층, 상기 정공층 위에 위치하는 황색 발광층, 상기 황색 발광층 위에 위치하는 전자 수송층 및 전자 주입층을 포함하는 전자층, 상기 전자층 위에 위치하는 제2 전극을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 정공 수송층 및 상기 차단층은 TAPC(1,1-bis[(di-4-tolylamino)phenyl]cyclohexane), TCTA(tris(4-carbazoyl-9-ylphenyl)amine), NPB(N,N'-Di(1-naphthyl)- N,N'-diphenyl Benzidine), CBP(4,4’-bis(9-carbazelyl)-biphenyl), PVK(poly(9-vinylcarbazole), TFB(poly[2,7-(9,9-di-n-octylfluorene)-co-(1,4-pheynylene[(4-sec-butylphenyl)imino]-1,4-phenylene)]), NPD(N,N-dinaphthyl-N,N'-diphenyl benzidine), TPD(N,N'-bis-(3-methylphenyl)-N,N'-bis-(phenyl)-benzidine), s-TAD 및 MTDATA(4,4',4"-Tris(N-3-methylphenyl-N-phenyl-amino)-triphenylamine) 중 적어도 어느 하나를 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따르면, 기판, 상기 기판 위에 위치하는 복수의 박막 트랜지스터, 상기 박막 트랜지스터와 전기적으로 연결되어 있는 제1 유기 발광 소자를 포함하며, 상기 제1 유기 발광 소자는 제1 전극, 상기 제1 전극 위에 위치하는 정공 주입층 및 정공 수송층을 포함하는 정공층, 상기 정공층 위에 위치하는 청색 발광층, 상기 청색 발광층 위에 위치하는 차단층, 상기 차단층 위에 위치하는 황색 발광층, 상기 황색 발광층 위에 위치하는 전자 수송층 및 전자 주입층을 포함하는 전자층, 상기 전자층 위에 위치하는 제2 전극을 포함하며, 상기 차단층은 상기 전자 수송층과 동일한 물질로 형성된 유기 발광 표시 장치를 제공한다.
상기 전자 수송층 및 상기 차단층은 TPBi(2,2’, 2″-(1,3,5-benxenetriyl)tris-[1-phenyl-1H-benzimidazole]), Bphen(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline), TmPyPB(1,3,5-tri[(3-pyridyl)-phen-3-yl]benzene), 3TPYMB(Tris(2,4,6-triMethyl-3-(pyridin-3-yl)phenyl)borane), B3PyPB(3,5,3'',5''-tetra-3-pyridyl-[1,1';3',1']terphenyl), B3PYMPM(4,6-Bis(3,5-di(pyridin-3-yl)phenyl)-2-MethylpyriMidine), Bepp2,(Bis[2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-pyridine]beryllium), BCP(2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenantroline), Alq3(tris(8-hydroxyquinolino)aluminum), PBD, TAZ, spiro-PBD, BAlq 및 SAlq 중 적어도 어느 하나를 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 또 다른 실시예에 따르면, 기판 위의 제1 화소 및 제2 화소에 제1 전극을 각각 형성하는 단계, 상기 제1 전극 위에 정공 주입층 및 정공 수송층을 형성하는 단계, 상기 정공 수송층 위에 황색 발광층을 형성하는 단계, 제1 화소에 대응되는 영역이 개구된 마스크를 이용하여 상기 제1 화소에 차단층 및 청색 발광층을 순서대로 형성하는 단계, 상기 제1 화소의 상기 청색 발광층 및 상기 제2 화소의 상기 황색 발광층 위에 전자 수송층 및 전자 주입층을 형성하는 단계, 및 상기 전자 주입층 위에 제2 전극을 형성하는 단계를 포함하며, 상기 차단층은 상기 정공 수송층과 동일한 물질로 형성하는 유기 발광 표시 장치의 제조 방법을 제공한다.
또한, 본 발명의 또 다른 실시예에 따르면, 기판 위의 제1 화소 및 제2 화소에 제1 전극을 각각 형성하는 단계, 상기 제1 전극 위에 정공 주입층 및 정공 수송층을 형성하는 단계, 제1 화소에 대응되는 영역이 개구된 마스크를 이용하여 상기 제1 화소에 청색 발광층 및 차단층을 순서대로 형성하는 단계, 상기 제1 화소의 상기 차단층 및 상기 제2 화소의 정공 수송층 위에 황색 발광층을 형성하는 단계, 상기 황색 발광층 위에 전자 수송층 및 전자 주입층을 형성하는 단계, 및 상기 전자 주입층 위에 제2 전극을 형성하는 단계를 포함하며, 상기 차단층은 상기 전자 수송층과 동일한 물질로 형성하는 유기 발광 표시 장치의 제조 방법을 제공한다.
이상과 같이 본 발명의 실시예에 따르면, 유기 발광 표시 장치의 전면에 황색 발광층을 형성하고 황색 발광층의 적어도 일면에 청색 발광층을 추가로 형성하는 제조 공정을 통해 제조 공정을 단순화 할 수 있다.

첨부한 도면을 참고로 하여 본 발명의 실시예에 대하여 본 발명이 속하는 기술 분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자가 용이하게 실시할 수 있도록 상세히 설명한다. 그러나 본 발명은 여러 가지 상이한 형태로 구현될 수 있으며 여기에서 설명하는 실시예에 한정되지 않는다.
도면에서 여러 층 및 영역을 명확하게 표현하기 위하여 두께를 확대하여 나타내었다. 명세서 전체를 통하여 유사한 부분에 대해서는 동일한 도면 부호를 붙였다. 층, 막, 영역, 판 등의 부분이 다른 부분 "위에" 있다고 할 때, 이는 다른 부분 "바로 위에" 있는 경우뿐 아니라 그 중간에 또 다른 부분이 있는 경우도 포함한다. 반대로 어떤 부분이 다른 부분 "바로 위에" 있다고 할 때에는 중간에 다른 부분이 없는 것을 뜻한다.
이제 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 표시 장치에 대하여 도면을 참고로 하여 상세하게 설명한다. 여기서, 유기 발광 표시 장치의 구조는 구동 박막 트랜지스터와 발광층에 대한 구조를 포함한다.
먼저 도 1 내지 도 3을 참고하여 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 표시 장치에 대해서 상세하게 설명한다.
도 1은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 표시 장치를 나타내는 단면도이고, 도 2는 도 1에서 제1 유기 발광 소자(X)의 일부를 확대한 부분 단면도이며, 도 3은 도 1에서 제2 유기 발광 소자(Y)의 일부를 확대한 부분 단면도이다.
도 1 내지 도 3을 참고하면, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 표시 장치는 기판(123), 박막 트랜지스터(130), 제1 전극(160), 제1 유기 발광 소자(LDa) 및 제2 전극(180)을 포함하는 제1 화소와 기판(123), 박막 트랜지스터(130), 제1 전극(160), 제2 유기 발광 소자(LDb) 및 제2 전극(180)을 포함하는 제2 화소를 포함한다.
본 발명의 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 표시 장치는 이와 같은 제1 화소 및 제2 화소가 표시 장치의 열 방향과 행 방향으로 복수 개가 반복적으로 배열될 수 있다.
유기 발광 소자(LD)는 각각 정공층(171, 172) 및 전자층(174, 175)을 포함할 수 있으며, 정공층(171, 172)은 정공 주입층(171) 및 정공 수송층(172)을 포함할 수 있고, 전자층(174, 175)은 전자 수송층(174) 및 전자 주입층(175)을 포함할 수 있다.
제1 전극(160)은 애노드(anode) 전극, 제2 전극(180)은 캐소드(cathode) 전극일 수 있으나, 이와 반대로 제1 전극(160)이 캐소드 전극이고 제2 전극(180)이 애노드 전극일 수 있다.
이 때, 기판(123)은 유리, 석영, 세라믹, 플라스틱 등으로 이루어진 절연성 기판일 수 있다. 그러나, 본 발명의 실시예는 이에 한정되지 않고 기판(123)이 스테인리스 강 등으로 이루어진 금속성 기판일 수 있으며, 폴리카보네이트, 폴리메틸메타크릴레이트, 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트, 폴리에틸렌나프탈레이트, 폴리아미드, 폴리에테르술폰, 폴리이미드 또는 이들의 조합과 같은 유기 물질, 실리콘웨이퍼 등으로 만들어질 수도 있다.
그리고 기판(123) 위에는 기판 버퍼층(126)이 위치한다. 기판 버퍼층(126)은 불순 원소의 침투를 방지하며, 표면을 평탄화하는 역할을 한다.
이 때, 기판 버퍼층(126)은 불순 원소의 침투를 방지하면서 표면을 평탄화하는 기능을 수행할 수 있는 다양한 물질로 형성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 기판 버퍼층(126)은 질화 규소(SiNx)막, 산화 규소(SiOy)막, 산질화 규소(SiOxNy)막 중 어느 하나가 사용될 수 있다. 그러나, 기판 버퍼층(126)은 반드시 필요한 구성은 아니며, 기판(123)의 종류 및 공정 조건에 따라 생략될 수도 있다.
기판 버퍼층(126) 위에는 구동 반도체층(137)이 형성된다. 구동 반도체층(137)은 다결정 규소막으로 형성된다. 또한, 구동 반도체층(137)은 불순물이 도핑되지 않은 채널 영역(135), 채널 영역(135)의 양 옆으로 도핑되어 형성된 소스 영역(134) 및 드레인 영역(136)을 포함한다. 이때, 도핑되는 이온 물질은 붕소(B)와 같은 P형 불순물이며, 주로 B2H6이 사용된다. 여기서, 이러한 불순물은 박막 트랜지스터의 종류에 따라 달라진다.
구동 반도체층(137) 위에는 질화 규소(SiNx) 또는 산화 규소(SiOy) 따위로 형성된 게이트 절연막(127)이 형성된다. 게이트 절연막(127) 위에는 구동 게이트 전극(133)을 포함하는 게이트 배선이 형성된다. 그리고, 구동 게이트 전극(133)은 구동 반도체층(137)의 적어도 일부, 특히 채널 영역(135)와 중첩되도록 형성된다.
한편, 게이트 절연막(127) 상에는 구동 게이트 전극(133)을 덮는 층간 절연막(128)이 형성된다. 게이트 절연막(127)과 층간 절연막(128)에는 구동 반도체층(137)의 소스 영역(134) 및 드레인 영역(136)을 드러내는 제1 접촉 구멍(122a) 및 제2 접촉 구멍(122b)이 형성된다. 층간 절연막(128)은, 게이트 절연막(127)과 마찬가지로, 질화 규소(SiNx) 또는 산화 규소(SiOy) 등의 세라믹(ceramic) 계열의 소재를 사용하여 만들어질 수 있다.
그리고, 층간 절연막(128) 위에는 구동 소스 전극(131) 및 구동 드레인 전극(132)을 포함하는 데이터 배선이 형성된다. 또한, 구동 소스 전극(131) 및 구동 드레인 전극(132)은 각각 층간 절연막(128) 및 게이트 절연막(127)에 형성된 제1 접촉 구멍(122a) 및 제2 접촉 구멍(122b)을 통해 구동 반도체층(137)의 소스 영역(134) 및 드레인 영역(136)과 연결된다.
이와 같이, 구동 반도체층(137), 구동 게이트 전극(133), 구동 소스 전극(131) 및 구동 드레인 전극(132)을 포함하여 구동 박막 트랜지스터(130)가 형성된다. 구동 박막 트랜지스터(130)의 구성은 전술한 예에 한정되지 않고, 당해 기술 분야의 전문가가 용이하게 실시할 수 있는 공지된 구성으로 다양하게 변경 가능하다.
그리고, 층간 절연막(128) 상에는 데이터 배선을 덮는 평탄화막(124)이 형성된다. 평판화막(124)은 그 위에 형성될 유기 발광 소자의 발광 효율을 높이기 위해 단차를 없애고 평탄화시키는 역할을 한다. 또한, 평탄화막(124)은 드레인 전극(132)의 일부를 노출시키는 제3 접촉 구멍(122c)을 갖는다.
평탄화막(124)은 아크릴계 수지(polyacrylates resin), 에폭시 수지(epoxy resin), 페놀 수지(phenolic resin), 폴리아미드계 수지(polyamides resin), 폴리이미드계 수지(polyimides rein), 불포화 폴리에스테르계 수지(unsaturated polyesters resin), 폴리페닐렌계 수지(poly phenylenethers resin), 폴리페닐렌설파이드계 수지(poly phenylenesulfides resin), 및 벤조사이클로부텐(benzocyclobutene, BCB) 중 하나 이상의 물질 등으로 만들 수 있다.
여기에서, 본 발명에 따른 일 실시예는 전술한 구조에 한정되는 것은 아니며, 경우에 따라 평탄화막(124)과 층간 절연막(128) 중 어느 하나는 생략될 수도 있다.
이때, 평탄화막(124) 위에는 유기 발광 소자(LD)의 제 1 전극(160), 즉 화소 전극이 형성된다. 유기 발광 표시 장치는 복수의 화소들마다 각각 배치된 복수의 제1 전극(160)을 포함한다. 이때, 복수의 제1 전극(160)은 서로 이격 배치된다. 즉, 제1 화소 및 제2 화소에 각각 위치한 제1 전극(160)은 서로 이격 배치된다. 제1 전극(160)은 평탄화막(124)의 제3 접촉 구멍(122c)을 통해 드레인 전극(132)과 연결된다.
또한, 평탄화막(124) 위에는 제1 전극(160)을 드러내는 개구부를 갖는 화소 정의막(125)이 형성된다. 즉, 화소 정의막(125)은 각 화소마다 형성된 복수개의 개구부를 갖는다. 이때, 화소 정의막(125)에 의해 형성된 개구부마다 발광 소자층(170)이 형성될 수 있다. 이에 따라, 화소 정의막(125)에 의해 각각의 유기 발광층이 형성되는 화소 영역이 정의될 수 있다. 즉, 화소 정의막(125)에 의해 제1 유기 발광층(170a) 및 제2 유기 발광층(170b)이 형성되는 제1 화소 및 제2 화소 영역이 정의될 수 있다.
이때, 제1 전극(160)은 화소 정의막(125)의 개구부에 대응하도록 배치된다. 그러나, 제1 전극(160)은 반드시 화소 정의막(125)의 개구부에만 배치되는 것은 아니며, 제1 전극(160)의 일부가 화소 정의막(125)과 중첩되도록 화소 정의막(125) 아래에 배치될 수 있다.
화소 정의막(125)은 폴리아크릴계 수지(polyacrylates resin) 및 폴리이미드계(polyimides) 등의 수지 또는 실리카 계열의 무기물 등으로 만들 수 있다.
한편, 제1 전극(160) 위에는 발광 소자층(170)이 형성된다. 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 발광 소자층(170)은 청색을 발광하는 제1 발광 소자층(170a) 및 황색을 발광하는 제2 발광 소자층(170b)을 포함할 수 있다. 각 발광 소자층(170)의 구조에 대해서는 하기에서 상세히 설명하기로 한다.
그리고, 발광 소자층(170) 상에는 제2 전극(180), 즉 공통 전극이 형성될 수 있다. 이와 같이, 제1 전극(160), 발광 소자층(170) 및 제2 전극(180)을 포함하는 유기 발광 소자(LD)가 형성된다.
이때, 제1 전극(160) 및 제2 전극(180)은 각각 투명한 도전성 물질로 형성되거나 반투과형 또는 반사형 도전성 물질로 형성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, ITO(indium tin oxide), 은 나노와이어, 알루미늄(Al), 은(Ag), 금(Au) 등을 포함할 수 있다.
제1 전극(160) 및 제2 전극(180)을 형성하는 물질의 종류에 따라, 유기 발광 표시 장치는 전면 발광형, 배면 발광형 또는 양면 발광형이 될 수 있다.
한편, 제2 전극(180) 위에는 제2 전극(180)을 덮어 보호하는 덮개막(190)이 유기막으로 형성될 수 있다.
그리고, 덮개막(190) 위에는 박막 봉지층(121)이 형성되어 있다. 박막 봉지층(121)은 기판(123) 위에 형성되어 있는 유기 발광 소자(LD)와 구동 회로부를 외부로부터 밀봉시켜 보호한다.
박막 봉지층(121)은 서로 하나씩 교대로 적층되는 봉지 유기막(121a, 121c)과 봉지 무기막(173, 121d)을 포함한다. 도 1에서는 일례로 2개의 봉지 유기막(121a, 121c)과 2개의 봉지 무기막(173, 121d)이 하나씩 교대로 적층되어 박막 봉지층(121)을 구성하는 경우를 도시하였으나, 이에 한정되지 않는다.
박막 봉지층(121) 위에는 필요에 따라 각 화소 영역에 대응되게 위치하는 컬러 필터(도시하지 않음)가 형성되어 있을 수도 있다.
이제부터 도 2 및 도 3을 참고하여, 본 발명의 유기 발광 소자(LD)에 대해서 상세하게 설명한다.
먼저, 도 2에 나타낸 제1 화소를 이루는 제1 유기 발광 소자(LDa)에 대해서 설명한다.
제1 유기 발광 소자(LDa)(도 1의 X 부분)는 청색을 발광하는 제1 화소를 이루며, 제1 전극(160), 정공 주입층(171), 정공 수송층(172), 황색 발광층(173a), 차단층(200), 청색 발광층(173b), 전자 수송층(174), 전자 주입층(175) 및 제2 전극(180)이 순서대로 적층된 구조이다.
즉, 도 1의 제1 발광 소자층(170a)은 도 2의 정공 주입층(171), 정공 수송층(172), 황색 발광층(173a), 차단층(200), 청색 발광층(173b), 전자 수송층(174) 및 전자 주입층(175)을 포함한다.
제1 전극(160)이 애노드(anode)일 경우에는 정공 주입이 용이하도록 높은 일 함수를 갖는 물질 중에서 선택된 물질을 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 제1 전극(160)은 투명 전극으로서, 인듐 주석 산화물(ITO), 인듐 아연 산화물(IZO), 주석 산화물(SnO2), 아연 산화물(ZnO) 또는 이들의 조합과 같은 도전성 산화물 또는 금(Au), 알루미늄(Al), 은(Ag), 은 나노와이어, 마그네슘(Mg)과 같은 금속을 사용하여 얇은 두께로 형성될 수 있다. 또한, 제1 전극(160)은 이에 한정되지 않으며, 도전성 산화물과 금속 물질의 2층 이상의 적층 구조로 형성될 수도 있다.
정공 주입층(171)은 제1 전극(160) 위에 배치될 수 있다. 이때, 정공 주입층(171)은 제 1 전극(160)으로부터 정공 수송층(172)으로의 정공의 주입을 개선하는 임의의 층이다. 정공 주입층(171)은 V2O5(Vanadium oxide), MoO3(Molybdenum trioxide), HAT-CN(hexaazatriphenylene hexacarbonitrile), CuPc(cupper phthalocyanine), PEDOT(poly(3,4)-ethylenedioxythiophene), PANI(polyaniline) 및 NPD(N,N-dinaphthyl-N,N'-diphenyl benzidine) 중 적어도 어느 하나를 포함할 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
정공 수송층(172)은 정공 주입층(171) 상에 배치될 수 있다. 정공 수송층(172)은 정공 주입층(171)으로부터 전달되는 정공을 원활하게 수송하는 기능을 수행할 수 있다. 예를 들면, 정공 수송층(172)은 TAPC(1,1-bis[(di-4-tolylamino)phenyl]cyclohexane), TCTA(tris(4-carbazoyl-9-ylphenyl)amine), NPB(N,N'-Di(1-naphthyl)- N,N'-diphenyl Benzidine), CBP(4,4’-bis(9-carbazelyl)-biphenyl), PVK(poly(9-vinylcarbazole), TFB(poly[2,7-(9,9-di-n-octylfluorene)-co-(1,4-pheynylene[(4-sec-butylphenyl)imino]-1,4-phenylene)]), NPD(N,N-dinaphthyl-N,N'-diphenyl benzidine), TPD(N,N'-bis-(3-methylphenyl)-N,N'-bis-(phenyl)-benzidine), s-TAD 및 MTDATA(4,4',4"-Tris(N-3-methylphenyl-N-phenyl-amino)-triphenylamine) 중 적어도 어느 하나를 포함할 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
한편, 정공 주입층(171)은 정공 수송층(172)에 포함된 재료와 동일한 물질에 P타입의 도펀트(dopant)가 적용된 물질을 포함하여 유기 발광 소자의 구동 전압을 감소시켜 정공 주입 특성을 향상시킬 수 있다.
본 실시예에서 정공 주입층(171)과 정공 수송층(172)이 적층된 구조를 형성되는 것으로 설명하였으나, 이에 한정되지 않고 정공 주입층(171) 및 정공 수송층(172)은 단일층으로 형성될 수도 있다.
정공 수송층(172) 위에는 황색 발광층(173a)이 형성된다. 황색 발광층(173a)은 황색을 표시하는 발광 물질을 포함할 수 있으며, 인광 또는 형광 물질 등을 이용하여 형성할 수 있다. 황색 발광층(173a)은 예를 들어, 루브렌(rubrene), 비스-(2-페닐퀴놀린) 이리듐 아세틸아세토네이트, PFO계 고분자, PPV계 고분자 등을 포함할 수 있으나, 이에 한정되지 않는다.
황색 발광층(173a) 위에는 차단층(200)이 형성된다. 차단층(200)은 제2 전극(180)으로부터 발생하여 전자 수송층(174)을 통해 전달되는 전자가 황색 발광층(173a)으로 주입되는 것을 저지하는 역할을 할 수 있다.
즉, 차단층(200)에 의해 황색 발광층(173a)으로 전자가 주입되는 것을 저지하여 황색 발광층(173a)의 발광을 저지할 수 있으며, 이에 따라 제1 유기 발광 소자(LDa)는 청색 발광층(173b)의 발광만 이루어지도록 하여 청색 광을 발현할 수 있다.
차단층(200)은 전자를 차단하기 위해 정공 수송층(172)과 동일한 물질로 형성될 수 있다.
차단층(200) 위에는 청색 발광층(173b)이 형성된다. 청색 발광층(173b)은 청색을 표시하는 발광 물질을 포함할 수 있으며, 인광 또는 형광 물질 등을 이용하여 형성할 수 있다. 청색 발광층(173b)은 예를 들어, CBP, 또는 mCP를 포함하는 호스트 물질을 포함하며, (4,6-F2ppy)2Irpic 를 포함하는 도펀트 물질을 포함하는 인광물질로 이루어질 수 있다. 이와는 달리, spiro-DPVBi, spiro-6P, 디스틸벤젠(DSB), 디스트릴아릴렌(DSA), PFO계 고분자 및 PPV계 고분자로 이루어진 군에서 선택된 어느 하나를 포함하는 형광 물질을 포함할 수 있으나 이에 한정되지 않는다.
한편, 청색 발광층(173b) 위에는 전자 수송층(174)이 배치될 수 있다. 이때, 전자 수송층(174)은 제2 전극(180)으로부터 청색 발광층(173b)으로 전자를 전달할 수 있다. 또한, 전자 수송층(174)은 제1 전극(160)으로부터 주입된 정공이 황색 발광층(173a) 및 청색 발광층(173b)을 통과하여 제2 전극(180)으로 이동하는 것을 방지할 수 있다. 즉, 전자 수송층(174)은 정공 저지층의 역할을 하여, 청색 발광층(173b)에서 정공과 전자의 결합을 돕는다.
이때, 전자 수송층(174)은 TPBi(2,2’, 2″-(1,3,5-benxenetriyl)tris-[1-phenyl-1H-benzimidazole]), Bphen(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline), TmPyPB(1,3,5-tri[(3-pyridyl)-phen-3-yl]benzene), 3TPYMB(Tris(2,4,6-triMethyl-3-(pyridin-3-yl)phenyl)borane), B3PyPB(3,5,3'',5''-tetra-3-pyridyl-[1,1';3',1']terphenyl), B3PYMPM(4,6-Bis(3,5-di(pyridin-3-yl)phenyl)-2-MethylpyriMidine), Bepp2,(Bis[2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-pyridine]beryllium), BCP(2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenantroline), Alq3(tris(8-hydroxyquinolino)aluminum), PBD, TAZ, spiro-PBD, BAlq 및 SAlq 중 적어도 어느 하나를 포함할 수 있으나, 이에 한정되지 않는다.
전자 수송층(174) 위에는 전자 주입층(175)이 형성되어 있다. 전자 주입층(175)은 제2 전극(180)으로부터 전자 수송층(174)으로의 전자의 주입을 개선하는 기능을 수행할 수 있다. 전자 주입층(175)은 Liq, Rb2CO3, Cs2CO3, CsF, Alq3, LiF, 갈륨 혼합물(Ga complex), PBD 등을 포함할 수 있으나, 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
전자 수송층(174) 위에는 제2 전극(180)이 형성된다. 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 표시 장치는 제1 전극(160)이 애노드(anode)인 경우로서, 제2 전극(180)은 캐소드(cathode)일 수 있다. 제2 전극(180) 역시 투명 전극으로서, 인듐 주석 산화물(ITO), 인듐 아연 산화물(IZO), 주석 산화물(SnO2), 아연 산화물(ZnO) 또는 이들의 조합과 같은 도전성 산화물 또는 알루미늄(Al), 은(Ag), 마그네슘(Mg)과 같은 금속을 사용하여 얇은 두께로 형성될 수 있다. 또한, 제1 전극(160)은 이에 한정되지 않으며, 도전성 산화물과 금속 물질의 2층 이상의 적층 구조로 형성될 수도 있다.
다음으로, 도 3에 나타낸 제2 화소를 이루는 제2 유기 발광 소자(LDb)에 대해서 설명한다.
도 3에 나타낸 제2 유기 발광 소자(LDb)는 앞서 설명한 도 2의 제1 유기 발광 소자(LDa)와 비교할 때, 황색 발광층 및 청색 발광층(173a, 173b)의 배치와 차단층(200)의 구성만을 제외하고는 동일한 바 중복되는 설명은 생략한다.
제2 유기 발광 소자(LDb)(도 1의 Y 부분)는 황색을 발광하는 제2 화소를 이루며, 제1 전극(160), 정공 주입층(171), 정공 수송층(172), 황색 발광층(173a), 전자 수송층(174), 전자 주입층(175) 및 제2 전극(180)이 순서대로 적층된 구조이다.
즉, 도 1의 제2 발광 소자층(170b)은 도 3의 정공 주입층(171), 정공 수송층(172), 황색 발광층(173a), 전자 수송층(174) 및 전자 주입층(175)을 포함한다.
제2 유기 발광 소자(LDb)에서는 제1 전극(160)으로부터 주입된 정공과 제2 전극(180)으로부터 주입된 전자가 황색 발광층(173a)에서 결합하여 황색 광을 발현할 수 있다.
본 발명의 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 표시 장치는 상기한 도 2에 나타낸 제1 화소로부터 발현된 청색 광과 도 3에 나타낸 제2 화소로부터 발현된 황색 광이 혼합되어 결과적으로 백색 광을 구현할 수 있다.
그러면, 도 4 내지 도 6을 참고하여, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 소자의 제조 방법에 대해서 설명한다.
도 4 내지 도 6은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 소자의 제조 공정을 순서대로 나타낸 단면도이다.
먼저, 도 4를 참고하면, 제1 화소 및 제2 화소에 대응되는 영역에 각각 제1 전극(160), 정공 주입층(171), 정공 수송층(172) 및 황색 발광층(173a)을 순서대로 형성한다.
그 후, 도 5를 참고하면, 제1 화소 영역이 개구되어 있는 마스크를 이용하여 제1 화소에 위치하는 황색 발광층(173a) 위에 전자를 차단하는 역할을 하는 차단층(200) 및 청색 발광층(173b)을 순서대로 적층한다.
다음으로, 제1 화소의 청색 발광층(173b) 및 제2 화소의 황색 발광층(173a) 위에 전자 수송층(174), 전자 주입층(175) 및 제2 전극(180)을 순서대로 적층하여 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 소자를 제조한다.
이렇게 제조된 유기 발광 소자의 제1 화소에서는 차단층(200)을 통해 제2 전극(180)에서 발생한 전자가 황색 발광층(173a)으로 주입되는 것을 차단하여 청색 발광층(173b)만 발광하도록 하여 청색 광을 발현하고, 제2 화소에서는 제1 전극(160)에서 발생한 정공과 제2 전극(180)에서 발생한 전자가 황색 발광층(173a)에서 서로 결합하여 황색 광을 발현할 수 있다.
일반적으로 두 색의 발광층을 포함하는 유기 발광 표시 장치를 제조하기 위해서는 청색과 황색 발광층을 각각 형성하기 위해 두 번의 마스크 공정을 수행하여야 하지만, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 소자의 제조 공정에 따르면, 먼저 황색 발광층(173a)을 모든 화소에 형성하고, 청색 발광층(173b)을 마스크를 이용하여 추가 증착하는 제조 공정을 통해 한번의 마스크 공정만을 수행할 수 있다.
또한, 청색 발광층의 경우 황색 발광층에 비해 수명이 짧기 때문에, 청색 발광층을 모든 화소의 공통층으로 사용하기 보다는 황색 발광층을 모든 화소의 공통층으로 사용하여 유기 발광 소자의 수명을 증가시킬 수 있고, 청색 발광층의 정공 이동도에 비해 황색 발광의 정공 이동도가 높기 때문에 황색 발광층을 공통층으로 이용할 때 제1 화소에서의 발광 효율이 우수하다.
이하에서는, 도 7을 참고하여 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 소자에 대해서 설명한다.
도 7은 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 제1 유기 발광 소자를 확대한 부분 단면도이다.
도 7에 따른 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 소자는 제1 유기 발광 소자(LDa)의 청색 발광층(173b) 및 황색 발광층(173a)의 배치와 차단층(200) 구성 만을 제외하고는 앞서 설명한 도 1 내지 도 3에 나타낸 실시예와 동일한 바, 중복되는 설명은 생략한다.
도 7을 참고하면, 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 소자의 제1 유기 발광 소자는 청색을 발광하는 제1 화소를 이루며, 제1 전극(160), 정공 주입층(171), 정공 수송층(172), 청색 발광층(173b), 차단층(200), 황색 발광층(173a), 전자 수송층(174), 전자 주입층(175) 및 제2 전극(180)이 순서대로 적층된 구조이다.
본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 소자의 제1 유기 발광 소자는 도 1 내지 도 3의 실시예와는 다르게 황색 발광층(173a)이 청색 발광층(173b) 위에 배치되어 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 차단층(200)은 제1 전극(160)으로부터 주입된 정공이 황색 발광층(173a)으로 주입되는 것을 저지하는 역할을 할 수 있다.
즉, 차단층(200)에 의해 정공이 황색 발광층(173a)으로 주입되는 것을 저지하여 황색 발광층(173a)의 발광을 저지할 수 있으며, 제1 유기 발광 소자(LDa)는 청색 발광층(173b)의 발광만 이루어져 청색 광을 발현할 수 있다.
본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 차단층(200)은 정공을 차단하기 위해 전자 수송층(174)과 동일한 물질로 형성될 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 소자는 앞서 설명한 도 4 내지 도 6의 제조 공정에서 황색 발광층과 청색 발광층의 형성 순서를 바꾸어 제조할 수 있을 것이다.
즉, 제1 화소 및 제2 화소에 제1 전극(160), 정공 주입층(171), 정공 수송층(172)을 적층하고, 마스크를 이용하여 제1 화소에 위치하는 정공 수송층 위에 청색 발광층(173b) 및 정공을 차단하는 역할을 하는 차단층(200)을 순서대로 적층한 후, 제1 화소의 차단층(200) 및 제2 화소의 정공 수송층(172) 위에 전자 수송층(174), 전자 주입층(175) 및 제2 전극을 순서대로 적층하여 도 7의 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 소자를 제조할 수 있다.
그러면, 도 8 및 도 9를 참고하여 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 표시 장치의 휘도와 발광 파장에 대한 실험 결과에 대해서 살펴본다.
도 8은 본 발명의 일 실시예 및 비교예에 따른 유기 발광 표시 장치의 전압에 따른 휘도를 측정한 결과를 나타낸 그래프이고, 도 9는 본 발명의 일 실시예 및 비교예에 따른 유기 발광 표시 장치의 발광 파장을 측정한 결과를 나타낸 그래프이다.
먼저, 도 8을 참고하여, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 표시 장치와 비교예에 따른 유기 발광 표시 장치의 전압에 따른 휘도를 측정한 실험 결과에 대해서 살펴본다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 표시 장치로서 황색 발광층, 차단층 및 청색 발광층을 포함하는 제1 유기 발광 소자를 사용하였으며, 비교예로서 청색 발광층만을 포함하는 유기 발광 소자를 사용하였다.
도 8에서 가로축은 전압을, 세로축은 휘도를 나타낸다.
도 8에 나타난 바와 같이, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 제1 유기 발광 소자는 청색 발광층만을 포함하는 유기 발광 소자와 전압에 따른 휘도가 거의 동일하게 나타나는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
다음으로 도 9를 참고하여, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 표시 장치와 비교예에 따른 유기 발광 표시 장치의 발광 파장을 측정한 실험 결과에 대해서 살펴본다.
본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 표시 장치로서 황색 발광층, 차단층 및 청색 발광층을 포함하는 제1 유기 발광 소자를 사용하였으며, 비교예로서 제1 유기 발광 소자에서 차단층이 생략된 유기 발광 소자와 청색 발광층만을 포함하는 유기 발광 소자를 각각 사용하였다.
도 9에서 가로축은 파장을, 세로축은 파장의 강도를 나타낸다.
도 9에 나타난 바와 같이, 차단층이 생략된 제1 유기 발광 소자의 경우 황색 발광층과 청색 발광층이 모두 발광하여 혼색이 발생하는 문제점이 발생하였으나, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 제1 유기 발광 소자의 경우 청색 발광층만을 포함하는 유기 발광 소자와 동일한 발광 파장을 나타내는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
이렇게 도 8 및 도 9에 따른 실험 결과를 통해 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 유기 발광 표시 장치는 기존에 적용되고 있는 백색 유기 발광 표시 장치를 대체할 수 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.
이상과 같이 본 발명의 실시예에 따르면, 유기 발광 표시 장치의 전면에 황색 발광층을 형성하고 황색 발광층의 적어도 일면에 청색 발광층을 추가로 형성하는 제조 공정을 통해 제조 공정을 단순화 할 수 있다.
이상에서 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예에 대하여 상세하게 설명하였지만 본 발명의 권리범위는 이에 한정되는 것은 아니고 다음의 청구범위에서 정의하고 있는 본 발명의 기본 개념을 이용한 당업자의 여러 변형 및 개량 형태 또한 본 발명의 권리범위에 속하는 것이다.

    상기 기판 위에 위치하는 복수의 박막 트랜지스터,
    상기 박막 트랜지스터와 전기적으로 연결되어 있는 제1 유기 발광 소자를 포함하며,
    상기 제1 유기 발광 소자는
    제1 전극,
    상기 제1 전극 위에 위치하는 정공 주입층 및 정공 수송층을 포함하는 정공층,
    상기 정공층 위에 위치하는 황색 발광층,
    상기 황색 발광층 위에 위치하는 차단층,
    상기 차단층 위에 위치하는 청색 발광층,
    상기 청색 발광층 위에 위치하는 전자 수송층 및 전자 주입층을 포함하는 전자층,
    상기 전자층 위에 위치하는 제2 전극을 포함하며,
    상기 차단층은 상기 정공 수송층과 동일한 물질로 형성된 유기 발광 표시 장치.

    상기 정공 수송층 및 상기 차단층은 TAPC(1,1-bis[(di-4-tolylamino)phenyl]cyclohexane), TCTA(tris(4-carbazoyl-9-ylphenyl)amine), NPB(N,N'-Di(1-naphthyl)- N,N'-diphenyl Benzidine), CBP(4,4’-bis(9-carbazelyl)-biphenyl), PVK(poly(9-vinylcarbazole), TFB(poly[2,7-(9,9-di-n-octylfluorene)-co-(1,4-pheynylene[(4-sec-butylphenyl)imino]-1,4-phenylene)]), NPD(N,N-dinaphthyl-N,N'-diphenyl benzidine), TPD(N,N'-bis-(3-methylphenyl)-N,N'-bis-(phenyl)-benzidine), s-TAD 및 MTDATA(4,4',4"-Tris(N-3-methylphenyl-N-phenyl-amino)-triphenylamine) 중 적어도 어느 하나를 포함하는 유기 발광 표시 장치.
  4. 기판,
    상기 기판 위에 위치하는 복수의 박막 트랜지스터,
    상기 박막 트랜지스터와 전기적으로 연결되어 있는 제1 유기 발광 소자를 포함하며,
    상기 제1 유기 발광 소자는
    제1 전극,
    상기 제1 전극 위에 위치하는 정공 주입층 및 정공 수송층을 포함하는 정공층,
    상기 정공층 위에 위치하는 청색 발광층,
    상기 청색 발광층 위에 위치하는 차단층,
    상기 차단층 위에 위치하는 황색 발광층,
    상기 황색 발광층 위에 위치하는 전자 수송층 및 전자 주입층을 포함하는 전자층,
    상기 전자층 위에 위치하는 제2 전극을 포함하며,
    상기 차단층은 상기 전자 수송층과 동일한 물질로 형성된 유기 발광 표시 장치.
  5. 제4항에서,
    상기 박막 트랜지스터와 전기적으로 연결되어 있는 제2 유기 발광 소자를 더 포함하며,
    상기 제2 유기 발광 소자는
    제1 전극,
    상기 제1 전극 위에 위치하는 정공 주입층 및 정공 수송층을 포함하는 정공층,
    상기 정공층 위에 위치하는 황색 발광층,
    상기 황색 발광층 위에 위치하는 전자 수송층 및 전자 주입층을 포함하는 전자층,
    상기 전자층 위에 위치하는 제2 전극을 포함하는 유기 발광 표시 장치.
  6. 제5항에서,
    상기 전자 수송층 및 상기 차단층은 TPBi(2,2’, 2″-(1,3,5-benxenetriyl)tris-[1-phenyl-1H-benzimidazole]), Bphen(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline), TmPyPB(1,3,5-tri[(3-pyridyl)-phen-3-yl]benzene), 3TPYMB(Tris(2,4,6-triMethyl-3-(pyridin-3-yl)phenyl)borane), B3PyPB(3,5,3'',5''-tetra-3-pyridyl-[1,1';3',1']terphenyl), B3PYMPM(4,6-Bis(3,5-di(pyridin-3-yl)phenyl)-2-MethylpyriMidine), Bepp2,(Bis[2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-pyridine]beryllium), BCP(2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenantroline), Alq3(tris(8-hydroxyquinolino)aluminum), PBD, TAZ, spiro-PBD, BAlq 및 SAlq 중 적어도 어느 하나를 포함하는 유기 발광 표시 장치.
  7. 기판 위의 제1 화소 및 제2 화소에 제1 전극을 각각 형성하는 단계,
    상기 제1 전극 위에 정공 주입층 및 정공 수송층을 형성하는 단계,
    상기 정공 수송층 위에 황색 발광층을 형성하는 단계,
    제1 화소에 대응되는 영역이 개구된 마스크를 이용하여 상기 제1 화소에 차단층 및 청색 발광층을 순서대로 형성하는 단계,
    상기 제1 화소의 상기 청색 발광층 및 상기 제2 화소의 상기 황색 발광층 위에 전자 수송층 및 전자 주입층을 형성하는 단계, 및
    상기 전자 주입층 위에 제2 전극을 형성하는 단계를 포함하며,
    상기 차단층은 상기 정공 수송층과 동일한 물질로 형성하는 유기 발광 표시 장치의 제조 방법.
  8. 제7항에서,
    상기 정공 수송층 및 상기 차단층은 TAPC(1,1-bis[(di-4-tolylamino)phenyl]cyclohexane), TCTA(tris(4-carbazoyl-9-ylphenyl)amine), NPB(N,N'-Di(1-naphthyl)- N,N'-diphenyl Benzidine), CBP(4,4’-bis(9-carbazelyl)-biphenyl), PVK(poly(9-vinylcarbazole), TFB(poly[2,7-(9,9-di-n-octylfluorene)-co-(1,4-pheynylene[(4-sec-butylphenyl)imino]-1,4-phenylene)]), NPD(N,N-dinaphthyl-N,N'-diphenyl benzidine), TPD(N,N'-bis-(3-methylphenyl)-N,N'-bis-(phenyl)-benzidine), s-TAD 및 MTDATA(4,4',4"-Tris(N-3-methylphenyl-N-phenyl-amino)-triphenylamine) 중 적어도 어느 하나를 포함하는 유기 발광 표시 장치의 제조 방법.
  9. 기판 위의 제1 화소 및 제2 화소에 제1 전극을 각각 형성하는 단계,
    상기 제1 전극 위에 정공 주입층 및 정공 수송층을 형성하는 단계,
    제1 화소에 대응되는 영역이 개구된 마스크를 이용하여 상기 제1 화소에 청색 발광층 및 차단층을 순서대로 형성하는 단계,
    상기 제1 화소의 상기 차단층 및 상기 제2 화소의 정공 수송층 위에 황색 발광층을 형성하는 단계,
    상기 황색 발광층 위에 전자 수송층 및 전자 주입층을 형성하는 단계, 및
    상기 전자 주입층 위에 제2 전극을 형성하는 단계를 포함하며,
    상기 차단층은 상기 전자 수송층과 동일한 물질로 형성하는 유기 발광 표시 장치의 제조 방법.
  10. 제9항에서,
    상기 전자 수송층 및 상기 차단층은 TPBi(2,2’, 2″-(1,3,5-benxenetriyl)tris-[1-phenyl-1H-benzimidazole]), Bphen(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline), TmPyPB(1,3,5-tri[(3-pyridyl)-phen-3-yl]benzene), 3TPYMB(Tris(2,4,6-triMethyl-3-(pyridin-3-yl)phenyl)borane), B3PyPB(3,5,3'',5''-tetra-3-pyridyl-[1,1';3',1']terphenyl), B3PYMPM(4,6-Bis(3,5-di(pyridin-3-yl)phenyl)-2-MethylpyriMidine), Bepp2,(Bis[2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-pyridine]beryllium), BCP(2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenantroline), Alq3(tris(8-hydroxyquinolino)aluminum), PBD, TAZ, spiro-PBD, BAlq 및 SAlq 중 적어도 어느 하나를 포함하는 유기 발광 표시 장치의 제조 방법.
