The invention discloses a method of acquiring a video descriptor file, a content distribution server, a set-top box, and a system. The method comprises: after recovering from an abnormality, an encoding server re-segments a channel bitstream or continues to transmit a previous TS segment, so that when a set-top box receives an interrupted TS segment, the encoding server can receive an updated video descriptor file and TS segment. In one embodiment of the invention, during playback of a program, a content distribution server acquires, according to a preconfigured acquisition rule and from the encoding server, a video descriptor file, and transmits to the set-top box a descriptor file update notification.
