Description

DESCRIPTION
ADAPTER PAD FOR RAILCAR-TRUCK SIDE FRAME
Technical Field
The claimed invention relates to railway transport, and in particular, to adapter pads mounted between an adapter and a support surface of an adapter cavity in a railcar- truck side frame.
Background Art
An adapter pad for a railcar-truck side frame is known, which comprises a wear-resistant base having bent sidewalls and a plane middle portion, a fixing member made as a flexible carrying plate to be passed through axle-box through-holes provided in the railcar-truck side frame and to be connected, by its ends, to the bent sidewalls of the wear- resistant base in order to fasten the wear-resistant base on an axle-box support surface of the railcar-truck side frame (see RU 157801, IPC B61F 5/26, published 10 December 2015) .
The technical problem peculiar to the above-described apparatus is that it is technologically unfeasible to perform the operation of mounting the wear-resistant base on the axle-box support surface of the railcar-truck side frame due to the absence of guide members on the sidewalls of the wear- resistant base, which are bent at right angle relative to the plane middle portion.
Another adapter pad for a railcar-truck side frame is known, which comprises a wear-resistant base having bent sidewalls and a plane middle portion, a fixing member made as a carrying plate to be passed through adapter through-holes in the railcar- truck side frame and to be connected, by its ends, to the bent sidewalls of the wear- resistant base in order to fasten the wear- resistant base on an adapter support surface of the railcar- truck side frame (see RU121784, IPC B61F 5/32, published 10 November 2012 (prototype)) .
Disclosure of Invention
The technical problem peculiar to the above-described apparatus is that it is also technologically unfeasible to perform the operation of mounting the wear- resistant base on the adapter support surface of the railcar- truck side frame due to right-angle bending of the sidewall ends forming end portions which are parallel to the wear-resistant base and which, thus implemented, cannot serve as guide members because, in this case, the sidewalls of the wear-resistant base remain bent at right angle relative to the plane middle portion of the wear-resistant base.
The technical result of the claimed invention is improving the feasibility of mounting the wear-resistant base of the adapter pad on the support surface of the railcar- truck side frame.
Said technical result is achieved by an adapter pad of a railcar- truck side frame, .comprising a wear-resistant base having bent sidewalls and a plane middle portion, a fixing member made as a carrying plate to be passed through adapter through-holes in the railcar- truck side frame and to be connected, by its ends, to the bent sidewalls of the wear- resistant base in order to fasten the wear-resistant base on an adapter support surface of the railcar- truck side frame, wherein a bending angle "β" of the sidewalls relative to the plane middle portion of the wear-resistant base is maintained within the range of 40° to 50°.
According to the comparative analysis of the claimed invention with the prototype, the adapter pad for the railcar- truck side frame differs from the prototype in that the bending angle "β" of the sidewalls relative to the plane middle portion of the wear-resistant base is maintained within the range of 40° to 50°. Such distinction from the prototype allows one to say that the proposed technical solution meets the patentability requirement of novelty.
Brief Description of the Drawings
The essence of the invention is explained by drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows an assembled adapter pad mounted on a railcar- truck side frame;
Fig. 2 is an A-A sectional view taken from Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 shows a side view of a wear-resistant base;
Fig. 4 is a B view taken from Fig. 3.
Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention An adapter pad for a railcar-truck side frame comprises a wear- resistant base 1 (Figs. 1, 2) having sidewalls 1.1 bent at an angle "β" relative to a plane middle portion 1.2, the angle "β" being maintained within the range of 40° to 50° (Figs. 3, 4) . A fixing member is used to fasten the wear- resistant base 1 on an adapter support surface "B" of a railcar-truck side frame 3. The fixing member is made as a carrying plate 4 to be passed through adapter through-holes 3.1 provided in the railcar-truck side frame 3 and to be connected, by its flexible ends 4.1, to the bent sidewalls 1.1 of the wear-resistant base 1, on which fixing through- slots 1.3 are provided.
The adapter pad for the railcar-truck side frame 3 is mounted and used as follows.
The wear-resistant base 1 is arranged on the adapter support surface "B" of the railcar-truck side frame 3, and the sidewalls 1.1 bent at the angle "β" relative to the plane middle portion 1.2 are used as guide members at the initial moment of the operation of mounting the wear-resistant base 1. The fixing member made as the carrying plate 4 is passed through the adapter through-holes 3.1 of the side frame 3. Then, the ends 4.1 of the flexible carrying plate 4 (see the dashed line) are passed through the respective fixing through- slots 1.3. The ends 4.1 are bent around top edges of the sidewalls 1.1 and edges of the fixing through-slots 1.3, thereby clamping and safely fixing the wear-resistant base 1 on the adapter support surface "B" of the railcar-truck side frame 3. In doing so, an internal surface "C" of the plane middle portion 1.2, which is in contact with the support surface "B" , and internal surfaces of radial-coupling sites "R" of the sidewalls 1.1 with the plane middle portion 1.2, which are in contact with radial-angular couplings of the support surface "B" with the surface of the sidewalls 3.2 of the railcar-truck side frame 3, serve as location members uniquely defining the position of the wear-resistant base 1 on the adapter support surface WB" of the railcar-truck side frame 3.
By making the bending angle "β" of the sidewalls equal to a value less than 40° relative to the plane middle portion 1.2 of the wear-resistant base 1, the sidewalls 1.1 "move apart" at a sufficiently large internal angle, thereby forming a mounting space defined by the plane middle portion 1.2 and the sidewalls 1.1, which, in this case, do not function as guide members, since a desired position of the wear-resistant base 1 on the adapter support surface "B" of the railcar- truck side frame 3 is not provided at the angles "β" less than 40°. Such a situation can lead to the incorrect initial position of the wear-resistant base 1 before the wear-resistant base is fastened on the side frame 3 by the fixing member made as the carrying plate 4. In this case, it will be difficult to conduct the technological operations of mounting the wear-resistant base 1, and it will be necessary to take additional actions and efforts for providing the correct orientation and fixing of the wear-resistant base 1 in a desired position on the support surface "B" before the wear-resistant base 1 is finally fastened by the fixing member made as the carrying plate 4. In the meantime, there are no guarantees that, after the additional actions, the wear-resistant base 1 will take a predetermined desired position on the support surface "B" . Furthermore, the angle "β" less than 40° does not provide a reliable and unique position of the wear-resistant base 1 on the adapter support surface "B" when using a railroad car, since the low impact of the sidewalls 1.1 bent at the angle "β" less than 40° does not properly form stop faces interacting with the edges of the adapter support surface "B" , which are capable of fixing the wear- resistant base 1 in a unique way and in a desired position. Such a situation can lead to undesirable movements and distortions of the wear-resistant base 1 on the adapter support surface "B" and, consequentially, to the contact wear of the wear-resistant base 1 itself and the adapter support surface "B" of the side frame 3, which leads to the failure of the railcar-truck side frame and the wear-resistant base 1.
The bending angle "β" of the sidewalls 1.1 of the wear- resistant base 1, which is set to an angle value more than 50 relative to the plane middle portion 1.2, decreases a mounting angle formed by the sidewalls 1.1, thereby reducing the guiding capability of the sidewalls 1.1 and decreasing the probability of fast and smooth mounting of the wear- resistant base 1 on the adapter support surface "B" of the side frame 3.
Furthermore, since the side frame 3 is made as a cast product, the adapter support surface "B" can be made as one having loose tolerance limits in width. In case of using the side frame 3 with the support surface "B" having a maximum permissible width, it will be impossible to mount the internal surface "C" of the wear-resistant base 1 tightly and gaplessly on the adapter support surface "B" of the side frame 3.. In the meantime, due to the fact that the wear- resistant base 1 is made of a sufficiently thick and durable material, this does not allow the wear-resistant base 1 to be subjected to plastic deformation in order the wear-resistant base 1 to be snugly fitted to the adapter support surface "B" during its mounting on the side frame 3. In this case, the loose fit of the wear-resistant base 1 will remain after its fastening on the adapter support surface "B" of the side frame 3. Such loose and gapped mounting of the wear-resistant base 1 on the adapter support surface "B" of the side frame 3 results in reciprocal, small-area-limited contacts between the internal surfaces of the radial -coupling sites "R" of the sidewalls 1.1 and the edges of the adapter support surface "B" of the side frame 3. The contact of coupling members at a small area, which is accompanied by applying high efforts, provides the occurrence of local contact stresses of high concentration and high values, which cause the rapid contact wear of contacting members, the occurrence of contact fatigue cracks, thereby leading to the rapid destruction of the adapter support surface "B" of the side frame 3 and the wear- resistant base 1.
Thus, the implementation of the sidewalls 1.1 as those bent relative to the plane middle portion 1.2 at the angle "β", which is maintained within the range of 40° to 50°, provides the sidewalls 1.1 with guiding properties and, at the same time, with location-centering properties. The selection of the amount of bending the sidewalls 1.1 of the wear-resistant base 1 at said angle "β" is caused by the optimal combination of the capability of the wear-resistant base 1 to be rapidly and uniquely mounted on the adapter support surface "B" of the railcar-truck side frame 3 by using the sidewalls 1.1 as guide elements, and the capability of the sidewalls 1.1 to serve as the stop faces interacting with the edges of the adapter support surface "B" of the side frame 3 and fixing the wear-resistant base 1 in a predetermined stationary position.
Such design of the adapter pad simplifies and speeds up the operation of mounting the wear-resistant base 1 on the adapter support surface "B" of the railcar-truck side frame 3, while remaining reliable location of the wear-resistant base 1 on the adapter support surface "B" of the railcar- truck side frame 3.
While conducting on-the-line tests in respect of the railroad cars equipped with the railcar trucks having the above-proposed design of the adapter pad (these tests involve a series of rail rides for a sample railroad car at different speeds on railway lines of different status and construction under the conditions of fully loaded and empty railroad cars) , any movements of the wear-resistant base 1 relative to the adapter support surface "B" have not been detected, thereby confirming the high reliability of mounting the wear- resistant base 1 on the side frame 3 due to the selection of the angle "β" within the range of 40° to 50°, and ensuring the manufacturability of its mounting on the adapter support surface "B" of the side frame 3.
