Description

Re-closable blister pack cards
Technical Field
This invention belongs to the field of re- closable blister pack cards comprising several cavities or compartments in particular for dispensing chewing gums and receiving the used chewing gum.
Background Art
Chewing gums thrown to ground or stuck to chairs, tables etc. in the public are a challenge for cleaning persons and very expensive since the only means for removing them is by mechanical force.
So far several attempts have been made to provide chewing gum packages suitable for receiving a once used chewing gum, among others paper wraps of individual chewing gums, containers with separate "waste" cavity, blister pack cards, etc.
The paper wrap proved to be unsatisfying, since many users throw the paper wrap away once they re¬ moved the fresh chewing gum. Containers with separate waste cavities are poorly accepted because they are more voluminous than containers without waste cavity. Thus the most promising container seems to be the blister pack cards. However, usual blister pack cards are not intended for being filled again, once the content has been removed. A reclosable blister pack card is disclosed in EP 1 764 314 A2. This document defines a blister pack card with several cavities closed with a foil that at one side is permanently fixed ro the card body and on three sides by a reusable adhesive. This package has the disadvantage that in case a usual protection foil is used, said foil is so thin that pressure applied to it above the cavity will effect strong force to the reusable adhesive, eventually resulting in an inadvertent opening of the cavity and pollution of clothes and handbags , etc. unless the blister package is permanently stored in a casing.
Thus, it is a goal of the present invention to provide a blister pack card that itself provides enhanced security against inadvertent opening of the cavities .
Disclosure of the Invention
Hence, it is a general object of the invention to provide a blister pack card comprising several cavities or compartments, in particular for dispensing chewing gums, wherein said cavities or compartments after a first opening can be reclosed so that a used chewing gum can be placed and retained in the cavity or compartment without risk of pollution of the environment of the blister pack card like pockets, hand bags etc.
Now, in order to implement these and still further objects of the invention, which will become more readily apparent as the description proceeds, the blister pack card is manifested by the features that it comprising a card body with a front side and a rear side and with at least two cavities each with an opening in the front side of the card body said cavities being suitable for receiving a product in form of a tablet, wherein said cavities in the non-used state are filled with said product, in particular a chewing gum, and wherein said opening is sealed by means of a protection foil applied to the front side of the card body, and wherein the protection foil over each of said cavities is provided with first and second weakening lines or cuts such as to ensure the opening of each of the cavities separately, i.e. only one at a time, by tearing away said protection foil over one of said cavities, and wherein after a first destruction of the seal each cavity is reclosable with a cover comprising a cover plate or plane part, said cover being permanently connected to said card body (e.g. via the protection foil or via an insert or by being integrally formed with the card body) , said cover having a thickness of at least 0.15 mm.
The minimal thickness of the cover of at least 0.15 mm shall provide the cover with a stiffness sufficient to keep the cover flat over the cavity. This reduces the risk of the cover being crumpled and inadvertently removed from the opening due to projecting parts. Due to this stiffness it is also possible to abstain from a securing means additionally holding the cover in closed position like a reusable adhesive. In some cases the used chewing gum placed in the cavity may act as "adhesive".
The cavities preferably have no or rounded corners. The openings can e.g. have circular, oval or rounded rectangular shape with the rounded rectangular shape (see Figures) being presently preferred.
In order to provide additional security against inadvertent opening, the cavity can be formed with a step, i.e. a slightly larger extension parallel to the front side of the card body and in proximity to the opening in the card body. The height of the part with larger extension parallel to the front side, i.e. the extent in vertical direction to the front side, in one embodiment preferably corresponds to the thickness of the cover plate or plane part such as to provide a plane surface of the outer side of the once sealed protection foil when the cover is positioned and hold on the step.
Some kinds of cover, like molded parts or integrally formed covers, as they are described further down, can be substantial.ly thicker and stiffer, like 0.25 to 0.8 mm, in particular 0.25 to 0.5 mm for deep-drawn parts or 0.6 to 0.8 mm for molded parts. Contrary to well-known not reusable blister pack cards, the cavities are preferably stiffer since deformation thereof is not desired. Upon use, the protection foil is not intended to be disrupted through pres- sure onto the rear side of the cavity as in usual blister pack cards but provided with predetermined breaking points, e.g. weakening lines like creases, perforations and/or cuts, and with griping/grasping means . A suitable griping/grasping means comprises a cut in the protection foil over a recess in the front side of the card body, e.g. in the step of the cavity so that at this position the foil is not sealed to the body and can easily be griped or grasped and the foil torn away from or peeled off the card body. In a preferred embodiment the recess is positioned in the step and a part of the cover extends into the recess to additionally facilitate the removal of the protection foil. In one embodiment this part of the cover can be formed as a tongue and optionally the cavity or the step, respectively, may be formed to fit to this tongue .
In a preferred embodiment of the blister pack card of the present invention the stiff cover is connected to the card by means of at least one joint like a hinge-joint . Such joint reduces the force otherwise needed to displace and re-position the cover.
In another aspect of the invention, the cover is connected to the protection foil. This is e.g. preferred in cases where the cover is not integrally formed with the card body, e.g. in cases where the cover is a mere reinforcement of the protection foil in the area of the opening of the cavity. In such embodiment it is additionally preferred that said cavity is shaped with a step for receiving and supporting said reinforcement .
In another embodiment, wherein the cover is preferably connected to the protection foil, the cover is a separately produced, e.g. an injection-molded part. Connecting the cover to the protection foil in case of covers that are individually formed, i.e. not integrally with the card body, reduces the risk that the cover is lost prior to reclosing the used product filled cavity. Thus in case of covers that are neither integrally formed with the card body nor with the protection foil, it is preferred that they are produced as part of an insert into the card body. Such insert preferably provides covers for all cavities in the card body. In such embodiments it is preferred that the card body is fcrmed- with a body-rim projecting from its front side and at is outer edges and/or that the card body and the insert are formed with corresponding fixing means ensuring the permanent connection of insert and card body.
In another preferred embodiment, the cover is formed with a cover-rim that in the closed state extends into the cavity. The cover-rim improves the security of the closing of the cavity that can even be further improved by providing the cover-rim with a prejecting means, like a nose, protrusion or projection, and the cavity with an indentation, like a recess, notch or slot, for engaging with the projection or nose, or vice-versa.
In one embodiment, each cover is an insert or more than one, covers are combined in one insert or each cover is integrally produced with the card body and each of said covers is openably connected with a cavity of the blister pack card. Irrespective of the kind of cover, also blister pack cards with cover closed cavities are further protected by means of a protection foil . Such protection foil protects the product in the cavities from any undesired manipulation, like pollution, and reduces moisture contact.
In an alternative embodiment, the cover is positioned on the rear side of the card body and on the cavity. In this embodiment it is preferred that each cover is integrally formed with the card body, connected to one of its edges via two joints allowing to dislocate the cover from its position on the rear side to the closing position. A blister pack card with such a card body comprises directly sealed cavities, i.e. cavities that are not closed with a cover in the original state, i.e. the product filled and not yet used state, but with the protection foil while the cover is positioned on the rear side of the card body.
In order to provide good closure of the cover and minimal space consumption, it is preferred that in case of covers formed with a cover plate or plane part (providing the closure) and a cover-rim (improving the securing in closed position) , the inner dimension of the cavity snugly fits with the outer dimension of the cover- rim. In some embodiments, where the cover plate or plane part is positioned in the front side of the card body the plane part of the cover preferably extend over the cover- rim and preferably is positioned in or on a step of the cavity as described above.
In case of a cover with a plane part that in closed position is placed within the cavity (with or without step) and the cover-rim extending from said plane part to the front side, such cover preferably is an integrally formed cover-cavity with respective extensions. In case of a cover-cavity that in non-used state is posi¬ tioned on the rear side of the card body, the cavity is provided with a further step or indentation so that the cavity's outer dimensions in proximity to the bottom wall snugly fit with the inner dimensions of the cover-rim of the cover.
Card bodies of the present invention with or without integrally formed covers are preferably produced by means of deep-drawing methods. Injection molding is less preferred due to some very fine structures that might be needed.
Thus, a method for forming a blister pack card of the present invention comprises (i) forming a card body with at least two cavities with an opening in the front side by deep-drawing a plastics foil,
(ii) filling said at least two cavities with a product,
(iii) applying a cover either over the opening on the front side of the card body or on the rear side of the card body,
(iv) applying a protection foil over the cavities in the front side of the card body.
While the above-indicated sequence is used in the case of a cover applied over the opening, step (iii) can precede step (ii) in case of a cover positioned on the rear side of the card body or step (iv) can precede step (iii) .
Suitable protection foils can be monolayer or multilayer foils. They can comprise a sealable layer like a polyethylene layer or a layer that can easily be sealed by means of an adhesive . A multilayer foil can also comprise an aluminum layer or other functional layer, e.g. for enhancing moisture protection, a printable layer and/or an imprinted layer.
The material of the blister card body usually is a deep-drawing foil as known to the skilled person. Also this foil can be a multilayer foil composed of layers with different features allowing to adjust stiffness, moisture permeability and other protection characteristics. Also the card body material can be transparent or colored.
Since a used chewing gum is not a pleasant sight, at least part of a cavity or at least part of the cover or at least part of the protection foil can be colored. In the case of the protection foil this may be via a metal layer, like an aluminum layer that in addition provides a humidity and air barrier.
Since littering is a growing problem and since many people will not abstain from throwing their used chewing gums to the floor or stick it onto furniture, each package of chewing gums sold in form of a blister pack card of the present invention might be subjected to a deposit fee that will be reimbursed if the blister pack card, filled with the used chewing gums , is returned. For such reimbursement, the fil ling with chewing gums must be checkable. This can either be done visually through a transparent card body or through a not colored area therein or through a transparent part in the cover and optionally in the protection foil, or the filled blister can be weighted. In addition, random samples could be taken by opening some of the cavities.

Modes for Carrying Out the Invention
The invention is now further described with reference to the specific embodiments disclosed in the Figures ,
The embodiment of a blister pack card 1 shown in Figure 1 is an easy to manufacture, relatively cheap version . As can be seen from Figure la, the blister pack card 1 comprises a card body 2 with a front side 21 and a rear side 22 and with cavities 3 formed with a step 31 to receive and support a cover 4 that essentially is a cover plate or plane part. This cover 4 in general is a reinforcement of the protection foil 5 having an inner side 51 and an outer side 52. This ensures easy manufacturing of the blister pack card 1 since the covers 4 are already positioned on the inner side 51 of protection foil 5.
Such covers 4 are reinforcements that can e.g. readily be produced by removing part of a reinforc- ing layer from a multilayer foil.
Besides the cavities 3, the card body 2 is provided with recesses 6, preferably in the steps 31 that after application of the protection foil 5 serve to grasp the protection foil 5 and to tear it away from or peel it off one of the cavities 3 (see Fig. lb and le) . Thus, each of the cavities 3 has such a recess 6 in close prox- imity, preferably in its step 31.
The covers 4 are preferably permanently attached to the card body, preferably by a joint 7, like a hinge-joint . Such joint 7 can be a wakening line or perforation in the protection foil 5 that facilitates the lifting of the cover from the cavity 3 and its repositioning due to an elasticity of the protection foil 5.
Except for this joint 7, the protection foil 5 is provided with a first weakening line or cut 53 over the recess 6 that preferably is marked on the outer side of the protection foil 5 for assisting the gripping of the foil, e.g. with an imprint 8, and two second weakening lines or cuts 54 each extending on one side of the cavity 3 from said weakening line or cut 53 to the joint 7 so that upon grasping of the protection foil 5 above the recess 6 and tearing away the protection foil 5 over the cavity 3 the cover 4 is removed without being destroyed, so that a product in the cavity 3 can be removed and the cavity 3 closed again due to the recovering force (elasticity) of the reinforced protection foil . As soon as the used chewing gum shall be disposed, the cavity 3 can be re-opened, the chewing gum put into the cavity 3 and the cavity 3 closed again.
In order to facilitate the gripping/grasping of the protection foil, it may be advantageous to rein- force the foil over the recess 6, e.g. by providing the cover with a tongue 42 extending into the recess 6.
Since a chewing gum once placed in the cavity is assumed to not be flattened prior to closing the cover 4, the chewing gum in general will contact the cover 4 and provide a kind of seal resulting in a better secured closure of the cavity 3. As already indicated above, in a preferred embodiment, the outer side 52 of the protection foil 5 is printed with at least a imprint 8 indicating the first weakening line or cut 53 thereby facilitating the gripping of said foil (Fig. lc) . However, additional information or publicity may be provided on the protection foil 5 as well. In case of transparent or partially transparent protection foils 5 it is also possible to have the imprint 8 applied to the inner side 51 or an intermediate layer.
In a second embodiment, shown in Figure 2, the cover 4 is not a mere reinforcement of the protection foil 5 but part of an insert 9 into or onto the card body 2. In this embodiment, the card body 2 is preferably provided with a body-rim 23 proj ecting from the surrounding edge of front side 21 and having a height corresponding to the thickness of the insert in proximity to the body- rim 23. This ensures a flat surface of the outer side 52 of the protecting foil 5 and sealing of the insert 9 together with the body-rim 23 thereby providing additional fixation of the insert 9. Except for the body-rim 23, the card body 2 is about as described in connection with Figure 1. For each cavity 3, the insert 9 provides a frame 91. Connected to said frame 91 via a joint 7, like a hinge-joint, is a cover 4, preferably a cover 4 with a tongue 42 extending over the recess 6 thereby facilitating the gripping of the protection foil 5.
In a preferred embodiment, the covers 4 of each cavity 3 comprise a cover plate or plane part 41 and a cover-rim 43 extending from the cover plate 41 into the cavity 3 and fitting to the inside of the cavity's wall 32. In an even more preferred embodiment, this cover-rim 43 is provided with a projecting means 44, like a nose or protrusion, and the wall 32 of the cavity 3 is provided with an indentation 33, like a notch or slot, for engage- ment of the one with the other, or vice versa, to additionally secure the cover 4 to the cavity 3 and thereby also insert 9 to the card body 2,
Inserts 9 as described above can e.g. be pro- duced by injection molding.
In a third embodiment of the present inven¬ tion, shown in Figure 3, the covers 4 are integrally formed with the card body 2. The advantage of this embodiment is the manufacture of the card body 2 and cover 4 together, preferably by deep-drawing a plastics foil. The disadvantage of this embodiment is that the number of parallel rows is limited to two while in embodiments 1 and 2 three or more rows can be placed on one card body 2.
In this embodiment ail cavities 3 and covers
4 have to be arranged such that their connecting joint 7 is positioned on an edge . In the embodiment shown in Figure 3 the cavities 3 of one row are arranged such that all j oints 7 are on the same edge of the card body. The front side 21 of the card body 2 between the cavities 3 is plane except for projections or separating-rims 10 between the cavities 3 with a height corresponding to the thickness of cover 4 extending in between in cover-closed state. These projections or separating-rims 10 reduce level differences and thereby improve the sealing with protection foil 5.
While the cover 4 in Figure 2 was provided with a cover-rim 43 extending into the cavity 3 and a cover plate 41 positioned on or in step 31, in the pre- sent embodiment the cover 4 comprises a cover-cavity formed by the cover plate 41 and the cover-rim 43. Cover plate 41 has a dimension such that it extends to the side-walls 32 of cavity 3 and a cover-rim 43 whose outer surface fits the inner surface of side-wall 32 of the cavity 3. In closed state, the cover plate 43 is distant from the bottom-wall 34 of cavity 3 thereby leaving room for the product or - in other words - the cover plate 41 is placed within cavity 3 and distant from the bottom wall 34 of said cavity 3 and provided with a cover-rim 43 projecting from said cover plate 41 to the front side 21 of the card body 2, The cover 4 in this embodiment is in- tegrally formed with said joint 7.
Also in this embodiment the cover 4 may be additionally secured to the cavity 3 by providing the cover-rim 43 of the cover 4 with a projecting means 44, like a nose or protrusion or projection, and the side- wall 32 of the cavity 3 with an indentation, like a notch or a slot, or vice versa, for engagement of the one with the other.
The cavities 3 are separated from each other by a projection or separating-rim 10 with a height corre- spending to the thickness of the part of cover 4 extending over the front side 21 of card body 2 and preferably fitting to said part of the cover 4 in the closed state.
Although not shown, cavity 3 may also be formed with a step 31 similar to Figure 2 to provide ad- ditional protection.
In a fourth embodiment shown in Figure 4, the covers 4 in new, sealed state are arranged on the rear side 22 of card body 2. In this embodiment the cavities 3 are formed with different dimensions, i.e. a larger di- mension close to the front side for receiving the cover 4 within the cavity 3 and a part with smaller dimension on the bottom side so that the cover 4 can be arranged over the bottom of cavity 3. In this embodiment, the cover 4 is attached to the card body 2 via at least two and pref- erably two joints 7. The part of the cover 4 that in used state is positioned within cavity 3 can be shaped as de¬ scribed with regard to Figure 3.
This embodiment has the advantage that it can also be produced by deep-drawing, that no level differ- ences exist that might affect the sealing of the protection foil 5 and that the cover 4 can be secured to the cavity 3 in new (on the rear side 22) as well as in used state (on the front side 21),
A suitable weakening line is e.g. a perforation pattern that has a ratio of cut to land from 3: 1 to 1:3, e.g. formed by a perforation pattern having a plurality of cuts of a length of less than 3 mm.
Independent of the specific embodiments, the protection foils can be any plastics foil with suitable features such as monolayer foils or ~ preferred - multilayer foils, e.g. aluminated foils for enhanced vapor resistance. In general, the inner layer 52 is a sealable layer such as a polyethylene (PE) layer although sealing of the protection foil to the card body 2 might also be performed by means of one or more adhesives, e.g. a permanent adhesive where the protection foil shall be permanently fixed and optionally also a reusable adhesive at the other places . A reusable adhesive is optional but might additionally improve the "sealing" of the used chewing gum containing and cover closed cavity 3.
Suitable materials for the card body comprise a material selected from polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl i.~ dene chloride, polypropylene, polyethylene, polychloro- trifluoroethylene, cyclic olefin copolymer, aluminum, and combinations thereof.
If a refund system is envisaged, it will be necessary to check the filling of the blister pack card with used chewing gums. This can be assured by use of a card body that has transparent or at least partly transparent cavities 3 or - possibly - by weighing the card body.
The above described embodiments are the preferred ones with regard to the product load. However, other designs are also possible, such as circular card bodies with the cavities circular symmetrically arranged in a peripheral part or a rectangular card body of Figures 3 and 4 might comprise one or two additional rows of cavities perpendicular to the above addressed parallel rows .
