Description

HEADBAND AND ADJUSTMENT DEVICE AND A SAFETY HELMET
WITH SUCH A DEVICE
The invention relates to the field of safety helmets and more particularly to safety helmets for use in construction, manufacturing or industrial applications, and in particular to the parts, details or accessories of helmets and it has as its object a headband and adjustment device for safety helmet and a safety helmet provided of such a device.
Safety helmets are already known, such as safety helmet for construction, manufacturing or industrial workers, that each typically includes a hard shell portion, i.e. a head casing for taking impact, a lining portion such as headband or harness holding the helmet on the user's head and coupled to an adjustment mechanism for size fitment and retention. The adjustment mechanism consists generally of a ratchet system such as a slip- ratchet or rotary ratchet.
Most existing adjustment mechanisms include a lower rear shell portion having a clutching mechanism that allows the user to manually adjust the size of headband to fit its head size and be retained firmly. Together the adjustment system includes a strap that engages the adjustment mechanism and a flexible, durable and tough material that conforms to a wearer's head. The main purpose of the adjustment mechanism is to have the helmet couple snugly around the user's head and be firmly retained during use.
However, if there are several known adjustment mechanisms and headband, further enhancements based on user needs make room for uniqueness, differentiation and ease of operation. More particularly, the process of adjustment with current adjustment mechanisms is cumbersome and time consuming as the user cannot see it while wearing the helmet and operates by hand only by feeling it. The activation of the these known adjustment mechanisms then require generally several operations, a lot of effort and time for sizing the headband to user's size, whether to adjust the safety helmet on the head or to release it. In addition, common adjustment systems require usually to slide and tie straps, slip ratchets or more expensive ratchets or clutching systems that operate knobs or lever.
This invention has as its object to remedy to at least one of these drawbacks by proposing a headband and adjustment device for safety helmet such as for construction, manufacturing or industrial workers, that make extremely fast adjustment possible in a single operation of hands, this with a manufacturing cost lower than the current systems and with least effort and time to adjust and retain the safety helmet on the head or release it than with said current systems.
For this purpose, the present invention, has as its object a headband and adjustment device for safety helmet, said headband and adjustment device comprising an adjustable headband having a first strap portion and a second strap portion and an adjustment system for enlarging or tightening of the headband, said first strap portion being provided with an elongated slot delimited longitudinally by two longitudinal sides and at least a row of teeth extending along one of the latter and on one side of the plane of the slot, wherein the adjustment system comprises a housing including a front access opening and containing :
- a push element capable to be moved in translation in a direction substantially perpendicular to the plane of the slot and comprising a rear pushing portion extending through the slot, a front operating portion located on the other side of the plane of the slot and being exposed through the front access opening,
- a locking element including locking means and being capable to be moved in translation in said direction, under spring tension, into a locking position in which it is locked by engagement of the locking means with the teeth to prevent the enlarging or tightening of the headband and, under the pushing action of the push element via its pushing portion, into an unlocking position in which it is not engaged with said teeth to allow the enlarging or the tightening of the headband,
- a spring for applying a return force able to press and maintain under the spring tension the locking element in the locking position,
- a passage through the housing for the passage of the first strap portion between the operating portion and the movable locking element,
- a guiding system for guiding in translation the push element and the locking element.
The present invention, also has as its object a safety helmet more particularly for use in construction, manufacturing or industrial applications, comprising a protective hard shell capable of extending upon a surface region of the head of a person wearing the safety helmet, wherein it further comprises a headband and adjustment device according to this invention as described above. The invention will be better understood using the description below, which relates to at least one preferred embodiment, given by way of non-limiting example and explained with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which

- figure 13 shows a perspective view of the first strap portion of the headband and adjustment device represented in figure 1, on the side of the slot comprising two rows of teeth 6a, 6b extending each alongside one of the sides delimiting said slot.
The figures show a headband and adjustment device, according to this invention, for safety helmet, said headband and adjustment device comprising an adjustable headband 1 having a first strap portion la and a second strap portion lb and an adjustment system 2, 3, 4, 5 for enlarging or tightening of the headband 1, said first strap portion la being provided with an elongated slot 10a delimited longitudinally by two longitudinal sides and at least a row of teeth 6a, 6b extending along one of the latter and on one side of the plane of the slot 10a.
Preferably, the first strap portion la can comprise two rows of teeth 6a, 6b, one row of teeth 6a extending along one of the longitudinal sides and the other row of teeth 6b extending along the other longitudinal sides. Both rows of teeth 6a, 6b are located on the same side of the plane of the slot 10a.
According to this invention, the adjustment system comprises a housing 4, 5 including a front access opening 5d and containing:
- a push element 2 capable to be moved in translation in a direction substantially perpendicular to the plane of the slot 10a and comprising a rear pushing portion 2b extending through the slot 10a, a front operating portion 2a located on the other side of the plane of the slot 10a, i.e. the side of the plane of the slot which has no row of teeth, and being exposed through the front access opening 5d,
- a locking element 3 including locking means 3 a and being capable to be moved in translation in said direction, under spring tension, into a locking position in which it is locked by engagement of the locking means with the teeth 6a, 6b to prevent the enlarging or tightening of the headband and, under the pushing action of the push element 2 via its pushing portion 2b, into an unlocking position in which it is not engaged with said teeth to allow the enlarging or the tightening of the headband,
- a spring 7 for applying a return force able to press and maintain under the spring tension the locking element 3 in the locking position,
- a passage 5b, 5c through the housing 4, 5 for the passage of the first strap portion la between the operating portion 2a and the movable locking element 3. It will be understood by the above sentence "exposed through the front access opening 5d" the fact that the front access opening 5b exposed the operating portion through the housing 4, 5 for enabling the activation of the push element 2 by a user which can then reach the push element 2 with his hand and push it. The push element 2 can also be named push button.
Still according to this invention, the housing (4, 5) contains a guiding system 2c, 5g, 5h, 32b, 33b, 4g, 4h for guiding in translation the push element 2 and the locking element 3.
It will understand that the locking element 3 is movable against the return force of the spring 7.
In a preferred embodiment of the guiding system, the latter can comprise:
- first guiding means 2c included into the push element 2, - second guiding means 32b, 33b included into the locking element 3,
- third guiding means 5g, 5h included into the housing 4, 5 and engages with said first guiding means so as to enable the movement in translation of the push element 2,
- fourth guiding means 4g, 4h, 4i, 4j included into the housing
4, 5 and engages with said second guiding means so as to enable the movement in translation of the locking element 3. According to this invention, the term included into the locking element or the push element or the housing can mean preferably: integrated, attached or included integrally molded with respectively said locking element or the push element or the housing.
In a preferred embodiment of this invention, as it can be seen in figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, the operating portion 2a can be a single piece, or one-piece-unit. In addition, the operating portion can have a disc- shaped or parallelepiped plate. The operating portion 2a can have a front operating surface 20a exposed through the front access opening 5d and a rear surface 21a facing away from said front operating surface 20a and toward the locking element 3.

In figure 7, it can still be seen that the push element 2 can comprise a contact rib 2d that can extend, preferably substantially perpendicular to the base 2c, on the rear surface 21a of the operating portion 2a. Preferably the contact rib 2d can extend longitudinally on the rear surface 21a of the operating portion 2a so as to pass, preferably, through the central axis of the operating portion 2a.
Still in figure 7, it can be seen that the base 2c of the U-shaped push element 2 can have a core out 20d of excess material which is done to prevent sind marks on a visible part for better aesthetics. Indeed, as the molten pastic material begins to cool after forming the part by filling the part cavity in the mold, it beings to shrink and during that process of solidification of plastic material sink marks may be formed. To reduce that possibility or to reduce the visibility of a sink mark excess material that is not detriment to the performance of the part can be removed.
As it can be seen in figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, in a preferred embodiment of the housing 4, 5, the latter can have the general shape of a rectangular parallelepiped and can comprise two parts 4, 5 located on either side of the plane of the slot 10a, i.e. a rear part housing 4 which comprises a rear side 4a and contains the locking element 3 and the spring 7 and a front part housing 5 which comprises a front side 5 a including the front access opening 5d and contains the push element 2. In addition the main body can have two opposite front and rear sides, namely a front side including the front locking surface 3a and a rear side including the rear pressing surface 3d. Furthermore, the row of teeth which forms the locking means 3 a can extend longitudinally by being set back from each terminal guiding end. On the other hand, fourth guiding means 4g, 4h, 4i, 4j, 4k, 41 can consist of a slide formed by a plurality of lateral guides, preferably six lateral guides, surrounding a space for receiving and sliding the locking element 3, each lateral guides being located on the inner surface of the rear part housing 4, either on the inner surface of the lateral sides 4e, 4f or on the inner surface of the rear side 4a. In addition each terminal guiding ends 32b, 33b of the looking element 3 then can be in guiding contact with a plurality of lateral guides, for example three lateral guides.
Preferably, the or each receiving space or receiving recess 30b,
31b of the front locking surface 3b of the locking element 3 can be made in the front surface of one of the terminal guiding ends 32b or 33b (figures 3, 4, 8). In this case, the or each receiving space or receiving recess 30b, 31b can be surrounding by a plurality of walls each being in contact by its outer surface with a lateral guide 4g or 4h or 4i or 4j or 4k or 41.
Preferably, the spring 7 can be a compression spring or a coil spring. In addition the spring 7 can have a first end 7a and a second end 7b. The first end 7a can be fixed to and/or in pressing contact with, the inner surface of the rear side 5c of the housing 4, 5 and the second end 7b can be fixed to and/or in pressing contact with the rear pressing surface 3d of the locking element 3 (figures 3, 9, 12). Preferably the second end 7b can be fixed to and/or in pressing contact in a receipt cavity 3e, preferably a circular receipt cavity, made in the rear pressing surface 3d of the locking element 3, preferably substantially at the center of said rear pressing surface.
Referring once again specifically to figures 4 and 11, it can be seen specifically that the front acces opening 5b can have an inner edge 5i which can extend into the housing 4, 5, more particularly into the front part housing 5, and that the inner edge can comprise a pressure contact rib which can be interrupted at the slide recesses 4g, 4h to enable reception of both terminal guiding ends 32b. The inner edge can project inward toward the locking element 3 preferably using a globally cylindrical projection 5j. Preferably, the pressure contact rib 11 can have an annular shape and can comprise two globally semicircular or semi annular contact ribs 11a, l ib each extending from one slide recess to the other. Such a pressure contact rib 11 prevents a slippage of the headband 1, i.e the first strap portion of the latter, due to flexibility of the material with which the terminal is made. In order to avoid less net effective release force than required for predetermined release and to ensure sufficient or adequate holding on the headband 1 while in locked position, the contact pressure rib can sandwiche the headband 1, preferably made using a non rigid material, between itself and the locking element 3.
This invention has also as its object a safety helmet more particularly for use in construction, manufacturing or industrial applications, comprising a protective hard shell capable of extending upon a surface region of the head of a person wearing the safety helmet, wherein it further comprises a headband and adjustment device according to this invention as described above.
Therefore, in this invention, such a headband and adjustment device can include one terminal-pull tightening adjustment and one push element or push button, which is auto release due to spring, which making a fast adjustment system specifically for security helmet.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the at least one embodiment described and represented in the accompanying drawings. Modifications remain possible, particularly from the viewpoint of the composition of the various elements or by substitution of technical equivalents without thereby exceeding the field of protection of the invention.
