Abstract

The invention relates generally to elongated members for roofing panel mounting. An elongated member 410 of the invention includes plurality of tabs 411 adapted to be engaged with a roofing panel, and a base flange 412 adapted to be anchored to a roof substrate via fastening means. The elongated member 410 comprises also a holding means 418 adapted to engage the elongated member to an aligned roofing panel, so that the elongated member and the roofing panel holds its position during assembly.

Description

Elongated member for roofing panel mounting, roofing panel system and comprising the same
Field of the invention
The invention relates generally to roofing panel mounting systems, in particular for seam metal roofs. This invention relates also to an elongated member for roofing panel mounting, and to a roof comprising the elongated member according to the invention.
Background
Sheet metal roofing systems are generally formed of a series of elongated sheet metal roofing panels mounted on a roof substrate in side-by-side relation, and joined together at their adjacent longitudinal side edges by a so called standing seam type water-tight joint. The roofing panels are typically made of either low carbon steel or stainless steel sheet metal, and are generally channel-shaped form, each comprising a flat base portion provided along its opposite longitudinal side edges with upstanding wall portions, one of which is formed at its top with an inturned horizontal top flange portion, and the other one of which is formed at its top with an outturned horizontal top flange portion terminating in a downturned edge flange.
A typical roofing panel 100 is shown in figure 1 . It is in the form of an elongated, channel- shaped sheet metal pan, and comprises of a base portion 101 , side wall portions 102 and 103 of approximately equal height. The side wall portions 102, 103 are provided along their top edges with respective horizontally extending lateral flanges 104 and 105 of approximately equal width. Horizontal is the z-direction of the coordinate system 199. The flange 105 is inturned while flange 104 is outturned in respect to the base portion 101 . The flange 104 is provided along its outer edge with a seam flange 106 extending downwardly alongside the outer edge of the inturned side edge lateral flange, and spaced from the wall portion 102 a distance slightly greater than the width of the inturned flange 105 so as to receive therebetween the inturned flange 105 of an adjacent panel during the fabrication of the roof assembly.
The roofing panels are typically installed down in place onto a roof substrate by using plurality of roofing panel mounting clips. An exemplary roofing panel mounting clip 210 is shown in figure 2. The clip comprises a tab 21 1 and a base flange 212. The tab 21 1 comprises a web 213 substantially perpendicular to the base flange, a lateral flange 214 extending substantially in x-direction of the coordinate system 299, and a substantially downwardly extending seam flange 215. Downward direction is the - y-direction of the coordinate system 299. The base flange is adapted to be secured to a roof substrate by nails or other suitable fasteners, whereas the tab is adapted to be engaged with a longitudinal flange of one of two contiguous roofing panels, which are subsequently joined by seaming inter engaged longitudinal flanges together to form a so-called standing seam in which the tab member is interleaved. The horizontal base flange has preferably a hole 216 for fastening means. The size and shape of the clip can be chosen based on the roofing panels used in the installation.
The use of roof panel mounting clip of figure 2 has few disadvantages. Typically, up to 10 clips are needed for m2 of roofing. Thus the assembler has to carry numerous clips in his/her pockets. Handing of the clips especially when using installation cloves is cumbersome and thus the clips are often dropped. Falling clips may be a serious problem especially when installing steep roofs for high apartment houses and the like.
The clips have to be installed one by one, since they are prone to slide on the roofing panels. Thus the assembler has to hold the clip on place when using an installation instrument such as a nail gun. This in turn is time consuming, and may also be dangerous especially when working close to the roof edges. The above mentioned problems have been solved in EP 2772595 and US 2003145548 by using elongated members for roofing panel mounting. An exemplary state of art elongated member 310 is shown in figure 3. It comprises tabs 31 1 a,b adapted to be engaged with a roofing panel, and a base flange 312 adapted to be anchored to a roof substrate via fastening means. A further problem related to roofing panel installation is that the roofing panels and the elongated members are prone to slide on the roof substrate. The steeper is the roof substrate, the more serious is the problem. Accordingly, very often one assembler has to keep the roofing panel and the elongated member in place and another assembler fastens the panel and the elongated member to the roof substrate. Alternatively, the panel has to be kept in place by using tools such as clamps. Accordingly, there is need for an improved roof panel mounting system. Summary
The following presents a simplified summary in order to provide a basic understanding of some aspects of various embodiments of the invention. The summary is not an extensive overview of the invention. It is neither intended to identify key or critical elements of the invention nor to delineate the scope of the invention. The following summary merely presents some concepts of the invention in a simplified form as a prelude to a more detailed description of exemplifying embodiments of the invention.
In accordance with the invention, there is provided a new elongated member for roofing panel mounting. The elongated member of the present invention comprises plurality of tabs adapted to be engaged with a roofing panel, a base flange adapted to be anchored to a roof substrate via fastening means and a holding means positioned in the first end of the base flange. The holding means is adapted to engage the elongated member to the roofing panel so that the elongated member holds its position during assembly.
In accordance with the invention, there is also provided a roofing panel system comprising a roofing panel engaged to an elongated member according to any of claims 1 -6.
In accordance with the invention, there is also provided a roof comprising one or more elongated members according to any of claims 1 -6.
In accordance with the invention, there is also provided use of an elongated member according to any of claims 1 -6 or a roofing panel system according to any of claims 7-9 for roof installation.
In accordance with the invention, there is provided also a method for roof assembly, the method comprising mounting of roofing panels to a roof substrate with an elongated member according to any of claims 1 -6.
In accordance with the invention, there is provided also a method for roof assembly, the method comprising providing roof panel mounting system according to any of claims 7-9, and mounting the roofing panel systems to a roof substrate. A number of exemplifying and non-limiting embodiments of the invention are described in accompanied dependent claims.
Various exemplifying and non-limiting embodiments of the invention both as to constructions and to methods of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of specific exemplifying embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawings.

The exemplifying and non-limiting embodiments of the invention and their advantages are explained in greater detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: figure 1 illustrates a state of art roofing panel, figure 2 illustrates a state of art roofing panel mounting clip, figure 3 illustrates a state of art elongated member for roofing panel installation, figures 4a-c illustrate an elongated member according to an exemplary non-limiting embodiment of the present invention, and figures 5 and 6 illustrate roofing panel systems according to exemplary non-limiting embodiments of the present invention.
Figures 1 -3 have already been explained in the Background-section of this document.
Description
According to one embodiment the present invention concerns an elongated member for roofing panel mounting. An exemplary elongated member 410 is shown in figures 4a-c. Figure 4a shows a perspective view of the elongated member 410, and figures 4b and 4c shows a top view and front view or the elongated member 410, respectively. The elongated member 410 comprises plurality of tabs 41 1 a-i adapted to be engaged with a roofing panel, and a base flange 412 adapted to be anchored to a roof substrate via fastening means. An exemplary roofing panel 100 suitable to be used with elongated members of the present invention, such as 410 is shown in Figure 1 .
The elongated member is advantageously substantially straight in the sideward direction i.e. in the x-direction of the coordinate system 499. Dimension and shape of the elongated member can be adjusted based on the roof substrate and the roofing panels used. An exemplary length in x-direction and width in z-direction of the coordinate system 499 of the base flange is 2500 mm and 30 mm, respectively. An exemplary width of a tab in x-direction and height in y-direction of the coordinate system 499 is 25 mm, and 23 mm, respectively. The number of tabs may vary depending on the length of the elongated member and the requirements of roof substrate. According to an exemplary embodiment, a 2500 mm long elongated member includes nine tabs. The tabs need not to be evenly distributed in respect of the length of the elongated member. For example, the tabs may be more frequent in proximity of the roof edge than in the middle of the roof when installed in place. Figure 4c shows a front view of an elongated member 410 according to an exemplary non- limiting embodiment of the present invention. The holding means 418 is omitted from figure 4c for clarity. As shown in the figure, the tab comprises a web 413a,b extending from a first side 412a of the base flange 412. The web is preferably substantially perpendicular to the base flange. The tab comprises also a lateral flange 414a,b extending from the web. The lateral flange is preferably substantially parallel to the base flange, and is out turned in respect with the base flange. In addition, the tab comprises a seam flange 415a,b extending from the lateral flange. The seam flange is preferably substantially perpendicular to the base flange and extends towards the base flange. It is obvious for a skilled person that the profile and the size of the tab, including the bending angles α,β can be tuned according to the demands of the roofing panels used for installation. Furthermore, the bending angles and shapes of the flanges, in particular the shape of the seam flange may change upon installation. The tabs are preferably, but not necessarily, substantially identical.
According to a preferable embodiment, the elongated member comprises also a flange 417a,b between the tabs. An exemplary height of the flange in y-direction of the coordinate system 499 is 10 mm. The aim of the flange 417 is to strengthen the elongated member. Most preferably, there is a flange 417 between each tab.
The elongated member 410 comprises a holding means 418 positioned in the first end 412A of the base flange 412. If there is no tab in the first end of the base flange, there is a flange 417a between the first end 412A of the base flange 412 and the tab 41 1 a. The holding means is preferably an additional flange in the first end of the base flange. The holding means is out turned in respect with the base flange and extends substantially sideward, i.e. towards x-direction in respect of the coordination system, 499. The shape, size, and the bending angle γ can be varied as needed . An exemplary holding means is a two-folded piece of material of the elongated member. If the thickness of the material of elongated member is 0.6 mm, then the thickness of the holding means according to this exemplary embodiment is 1 .2 mm. According to a particular embodiment, the holding means is an extension of the flange 417a. An exemplary length of extension is 10 mm.
According to a preferable embodiment, the base flange includes plurality of holes 416 for the fastening means, such as nails, bolts or screws. The holes are for assisting the assembly. According to a particular embodiment, there are as many holes in the base flange as there are tabs, and each hole is in proximity of each tab.
The elongated member can be manufactured on any suitable material used for roofing. Exemplary materials are Zn-tin, low carbon steel or stainless steel . An exemplary thickness of the material is 0.6 mm. Figure 5 shows a front view of an exemplary roofing panel system 520. It comprises a roofing panel 500 and an elongated member 510 engaged to the roofing panel. The elongated member comprises a base flange 512, and a tab 51 1 comprising a web 513 extending from a first side 512a of the base flange. The web is preferably substantially perpendicular to the base flange. The tab comprises also a lateral flange 514 extending from the web. The lateral flange is preferably substantially parallel to the base flange, and is out turned in respect with the base flange. In addition, the tab comprises a seam flange 515, extending from the lateral flange. The holding means 518, positioned in the first end 512A of the base flange, is omitted from figure 5 for clarity. Profile of the roofing panel and the elongated member is such that they can me joined together tight enough so that the junction between the elongated member and the roofing panel parts allows transportation and/or installation of the roofing panel system to a roof substrate. According to a particular embodiment shown in the figure, the junction is tightened by bending the seam flange 515 so that the tab 51 1 encloses a lateral flange 504 of the roofing panel.
Another exemplary roofing panel system is shown in figure 6. The figure shows a top view of a roofing panel system 620. The system is as that shown in figure 5, but it further shows the holding means 618 bent around a side wall 602 of the roofing panel and plurality of holes 616 for the fastening means.
According to another embodiment the present invention concerns a method for roofing panel assembly. According to one embodiment, the method includes mounting of roofing panels to a roof substrate with an elongated member according to any of claims 1 -6. According to another embodiment the method includes providing roofing panel systems according to any of claims 7-9, and mounting the roofing panels to a roof substrate.
When assembling roofing panels, the elongated member comprising a holding means is assembled so that the holding means is preferably towards the roof eaves. During assembly, the holding means is bent around the seam of the accompanied roofing panel so that the elongated member is locked in its position. When locked, the angle γ is close to 0°.
Roof installation includes typically fastening of roofing panels and elongated members to the roof substrate by using fastening means such as nails. Accordingly, if the fastening means puncture holes e.g. in the under-cladding, and potential leaking sites are formed. Formation of the holes can be avoided by using an elongated member comprising isolating means 419, 519 adapted to be positioned between the base flange and the roof substrate. A particular isolating means comprises bitumen. Exemplary isolating materials are preferably bitumen felt and bitumen gum.
The holding means gains advantages. It allows installation of a row of roofing panels prior to seaming, which makes the assembly faster and safer. In addition, the use of clamps or other tools to hold the roofing panels in place during assembly can be avoided.
According to another embodiment the present invention concern a roofing panel system comprising a roofing panel and an elongated member according to the present invention. An exemplary roofing panel 100 that can be engaged with an elongated member of the present invention is shown in figure 1 . Roofing panel systems 520, 620 according to an exemplary non-limiting embodiment of the present inventions are shown in figures 5 and 6.
According to still another embodiment the present invention concerns a roof comprising an elongated member according to the present invention. Exemplary elongated member 410 is shown in figure 4. According to still another embodiment the present invention concerns use of an elongated member such as 410 shown in figure 4 for roof installation.
According to still another embodiment the present invention concerns use of the roofing panel system such as 520, 620 shown in figures 4 and 5, respectively, for roof installation.
The specific examples provided in the description given above should not be construed as limiting the scope and/or the applicability of the appended claims.

Claims

What is claimed is
1 . An elongated member (410, 510, 610) for roofing panel mounting to a roof substrate, the elongated member comprising a plurality of tabs (41 1 a-i, 51 1 , 61 1 ) adapted to be engaged with the roofing panel, and a base flange (412, 512, 612) adapted to be anchored to the roof substrate via fastening means characterized in that the elongated member comprises holding means (418, 518, 618) positioned in the first end (412A, 512A, 612A) of the base flange (412, 512, 612), the holding means adapted to engage the elongated member to the roofing panel so that the elongated member holds its position during assembly.
2. The elongated member according to claim 1 , wherein one of more of the plurality of tabs comprise - a web (413a, b, 513) extending from a first side (412a, 512a) of the base flange, the web being substantially perpendicular to the base flange,
- a lateral flange (414a,b, 514) extending from the web, the lateral flange being substantially parallel to the base flange, and being outturned in respect with the base flange, and - a seam flange (415a,b, 515) extending from the lateral flange.
3. The elongated member according to claim 1 or 2, further comprising a flange (417a,b) between the plurality of tabs adapted to strengthen the elongated member.
4. The elongated member according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the base flange (412, 612) comprises plurality of holes (416, 616) for the fastening means.
5. The elongated member according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the elongated member comprises isolating means (419, 519) engaged to the base flange, the isolating means adapted to be positioned between the base flange and the roof substrate.
6. The elongated member according to claim 5, wherein the isolating means comprises bitumen, preferably bitumen felt or bitumen gum.
7. A roofing panel system comprising a roofing panel (500, 600) engaged with an elongated member according to any of claims 1 -6.
8. The roofing panel system according to claim 7, wherein the seam flange (515) is bent so that the tab (51 1 ) encloses a lateral flange (504) of the roofing panel.
9. The roofing panel system according to claim 7 or 8, wherein the elongated member comprises a holding means (618), and wherein the holding means is bent over a side wall portion (602) of the roofing panel (600).
10. A roof comprising one or more elongated members according to any of claims 1 -6.
1 1 . Use of an elongated member according to any of claims 1 -6 or a roofing panel system according to any of claims 8-10 for roof installation.
12. A method for roof assembly, characterized in that the method comprises mounting of roofing panels to a roof substrate with an elongated member according to any of claims 1 - 6.
13. A method for roof assembly, characterized in that the method comprises providing roofing panel systems according to any of claims 7-9, and mounting the roofing panels to a roof substrate.
