  • Hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) procedure is an example of an error control method for data transmission used in communication systems.
  • HARQ hybrid automatic repeat request
  • the maximum number of hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) processes that are allocated to a UE in the UL and in the DL for a given carrier may be fixed.
  • LTE assumes a fixed HARQ round-trip time (RTT) and the maximum number of allowed HARQ process IDs matches this RTT. This ensures that there is no HARQ stall, i.e., a UE does not run out of HARQ processes and thus the base station is able to keep transmitting to the same UE in every TTI.

  • the Macro enodeB needs 6 HARQ processes, whereas, RRH based small cell needs 10 HARQ processes to prevent HARQ stalling.
  • Static configuration of a maximum number of HARQ processes per cell across the entire network may not address this problem since different cells may experience different HARQ round-trip delays.
