Description

System and method for mechanically fixing an electrically driven actuator, which is mounted on a door, relatively to a lock cylinder inserted into the door.
Field of the invention
The present invention relates to a system for mechanically fixing an electrically driven actuator, which is mounted on a door, relatively to a lock cylinder that is inserted into the door, wherein the actuator is mechanically connected to the lock cylinder by means of a driver. In particular, the invention relates to a door leaf with an electromechanical locking system, a method for fixing an actuator housing on a door leaf, a mounting kit for fixing an actuator housing with an electric rotary actuator on a door leaf, as well as an adapter for such a mounting kit.
Description of Prior Art
Electrically driven actuators are used to ease operation of doors, for example as retrofit units on existing door locks. Such electromechanical actuator systems, typically, are mounted on the door leaf and have an electrically driven actuator that engages in a lock cylinder by means of a driver. In some cases, such locking systems are adapted to a specific type of door, in other cases, the systems have a more adjustable character in order to be adaptable to different door types and door thicknesses.
Also, the lock type impacts the actuator system. An example of a lock type is lock cylinders of the Euro-type. This type is characterized by a cross-sectional shape having an upper circular portion with a diameter of 17 mm, and a lower elongated portion with a width of 10 mm, and where the overall height is 33 mm. A pivotable pawl is provided for lateral swinging to grasp the mechanism that displaces the lock-bolt in the lock. The width of the pawl is typically 9.4 mm in a gap of 10 mm. When such Euro-lock cylinders are mounted in a door, typically, they extend through a cover bracket mounted on top of the door, for example, a key plate or cylinder plate. Such cover bracket is provided with a bracket aperture, corresponding to the cylinder lock, and, therefore, also has an upper circular portion having a diameter slightly larger than the 17 mm of the lock, for example, between 17 and 19 mm, such as 18-19 mm, and an elongated lower portion having a width of slightly more than 10 mm, for example between 10 and 12 mm, such as 11-12 mm.
Danish Patent DK17991B 1 discloses an example of such an actuator system, which comprises a cylindrical housing for mounting on a door in which a driver connects the actuator with the lock in such a way that rotation of the driver leads to a displacement of the lock-bolt. A similar locking system is disclosed in US patent application US2015/0096341, which also shows a mounting plate that is used for mounting the actuator system on the door. Such mounting plates are important to safeguard the cor- rect and fixed adjustment of the actuator relative to the lock cylinder, as a displaced or loose actuator is not working smoothly. This mounting plate is provided with different pair-wise sets of screw holes adapted to the location of threaded holes of different door types for mounting the lock brackets. The different sets of holes are located symmetrically with respect to a substantially central first aperture in the mounting plate, through which the driver extends from the lock to the actuator system. For specially adapted locks of Euro-type, which for example are used especially in Northern Europe and Central Europe, a pair of holes is provided in the mounting plate on a center line, which also goes through this first opening, where the center line is vertical when the mounting plate is oriented for correct mounting. The vertical pair of holes may be used for a couple of screws that fasten directly to the lock cylinder, which, correspondingly, is provided with a set of threaded holes that are placed one above the other when mounted in doors.
In some doors, the door panel is so thick that the lock cylinder is not flush with the inner side of the door, and the mounting plate cannot be mounted directly on the lock cylinder. The mounting plate may then be mounted by screwing directly on the door, which results in a sufficiently mutual stability between the actuator system and the lock. However, if there is already provided a key plate or cylinder plate on the door, problems are experienced with respect to stability between the mounting plate and the lock cylinder when the mounting plate cannot be screwed directly onto the lock cylinder. This problem is desired solved. Description of the invention
It is, therefore, an objective of the invention to improve the prior art and remedy deficiencies concerning stability between the above-mentioned actuator housing and the lock cylinder. In particular, it is an objective to provide an improved mounting system for the stability of electromechanical locking systems in the case of mounting of an actuator housing on the door's cover bracket, such as key plates or cylinder plates. This objective is solved by a system and a method as described in larger detail in the following.
To remedy the problem, there are provided the following method for attaching an actuator onto a door leaf. Offset is taken in a door leaf which is provided with a lock cylinder for displacement of a lock-bolt when the lock cylinder is operated. On the door leaf, a mounting plate is mounted on which an actuator housing is fixed. In the actuator housing, there is provided an electrically driven rotary actuator which, at the rear of the housing, is driving a driver-connection, in which there is inserted a driver, which is also connected to the lock cylinder for displacing the lock-bolt. For access to the lock cylinder, the door leaf has a passage that is covered with a cover bracket, which has a bracket aperture through which the driver extends from the driver- connection to the lock cylinder. Mounting of the mounting plate can then be done on top of and abutting the cover bracket. For this, an adapter is used with dimensions larger than a portion of the aperture, and the adapter is placed on the opposite side of the cover bracket and is screwed together with the mounting plate by means of screws so as to clamp the cover bracket between the mounting plate and the adapter. The screws will then extend through the bracket aperture and through the mounting plate, as the screw head bears against the outer side of the mounting plate, and the thread extends into the threaded holes of the adapter.
For example, there is provided an adapter with two threaded holes having the same spacing as the first hole spacing of the screw holes in the mounting plate, and wherein the two screws extend through the set of screw holes of the mounting plate and into the threaded holes of the adapter. For example, the assembly itself may be made by the following steps. The adapter is fastened to the mounting plate using the screws, however, without tightening the screws. Then, the adapter is inserted through the bracket aperture from the front to the back of the cover bracket without removing the cover bracket from the door leaf, and such that the adapter is behind the cover bracket and the mounting plate in front of the cover bracket. After this placement of the adapter behind the cover bracket, the screws are tightened, whereby the cover bracket is clamped between the adapter and the mounting plate. Thus, the cover bracket is fixed to the door leaf during the entire assembly procedure.
If the lock cylinder is of the Euro-type, the bracket aperture, generally, has the same shape as the Euro-cylinder such that the Euro-cylinder can extend through the bracket aperture. The bracket aperture has as a first, upper portion, which is circular with a diameter of between 17 and 19 mm, and a second portion which is elongate and verti- cal with a width of between 10 and 12 mm, wherein the two portions of the aperture are joined.
For such a bracket aperture, the adapter is advantageously provided with an extent which, in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the threaded holes, is within a circum- scribed circle having a diameter of 17 mm, so that it can be inserted into the circular first upper portion of the bracket aperture. In addition, the extension of the adapter is larger than 14 mm, for example up to 17 mm, in order to be placed on either side of the elongated portion of the bracket aperture, and then, when the screws are tightened, clamp the cover bracket between the adapter and the mounting plate.
The assembly steps themselves are, for example, as follows. The adapter is secured to the mounting plate by means of screws, but without tightening the screws. In this loosely assembled state, the adapter is inserted through the upper circular portion of the aperture from the front to the back of the cover bracket and displaced downwardly until the rear of the elongate portion of the aperture, such that it engages behind the cover bracket on either side of the elongated portion of the aperture, preventing the adapter from slipping out of the aperture again. The adapter is then located behind the cover bracket and the mounting plate in front of the cover bracket. In this position, the screws are tightened, and the cover bracket is, thus, clamped firmly between the adapter and the mounting plate. This assembly can be performed without removing the cover bracket from the door leaf. The mounting plate has a first aperture surrounding the driver-connection such that the driver extends through the first aperture. The screw holes in the mounting plate are advantageously located one above the other with a first hole spacing and on a vertical center line, which also passes through the center of the first aperture. The adapter has two or more threaded holes with the same spacing as the first hole spacing in the mounting plate. As the screw holes in the mounting plate and the threaded holes in the adapter are arranged on a center line, the screws extend through the elongated vertical portion of the bracket aperture when the cover bracket is clamped between the mounting plate and the adapter. The object is also solved by the following system, as exemplified specifically to a lock cylinder of the Euro-type.
A door leaf is, thus, provided with an electromechanical lock system comprising a lock cylinder of the Euro-type for displacing a lock-bolt when the lock cylinder is op- erated and an electrically driven rotary actuator for operating the lock cylinder. On the door leaf, there is fixed a mounting plate that holds an actuator housing, which contains the rotary actuator. The rotary actuator drives a rotational mechanical driver- connection, which is provided at the back of the actuator housing and into which a driver is inserted, which is further connected to the lock cylinder for displacement of the lock-bolt. The mounting plate has a first aperture around the driver-connection such that the driver extends through the first aperture. In the mounting plate, a set of screw holes that are provided, which are located one above the other with a first hole spacing and on a vertical center line that also passes through the first central aperture. For access to the lock cylinder, the door leaf has a passage that is covered with a cover bracket having a bracket aperture of substantially the same shape as the Euro-cylinder so that the Euro-cylinder can extend through the bracket aperture. For example, the bracket aperture has a first, upper portion, which is circular with a diameter of be- tween 17 and 19 mm, and a second portion which is elongated and vertical with a width of between 10 and 12 mm, where the two portions of the aperture are joined.
In the event that the lock cylinder is so long that it extends out through the cover bracket, the mounting plate can be fastened at the end of the lock cylinder. If the lock cylinder, however, is not so long but ends at a distance from the cover bracket, the mounting plate can be mounted directly on the cover bracket. For this, an adapter is used with threaded holes with the same spacing as the first hole spacing of the mounting plate. For fixing the mounting plate on the cover bracket, the screws extend through the set of screw holes of the mounting plate and into the threaded holes of the adapter with the cover bracket clamped between the mounting plate and the adapter. By clamping the cover bracket between the mounting plate and the adapter, the mounting plate is kept fixed on the cover bracket. As the cover bracket is fixed on the door leaf, a stable connection is obtained between the actuator housing on the mounting plate and the door leaf, itself. As also the lock cylinder is fixed on the door leaf, risk of twisting between the lock cylinder and the actuator housing is avoided, which ensures smooth running of the driver between the actuator and the lock cylinder.
For example, for the method and the system, there is provides a mounting kit compris- ing a lock cylinder of the Euro-type, a mounting plate, and an adapter, wherein the lock cylinder at its one end is provided with a set of threaded holes, and the adapter is provided with corresponding threaded holes, and the mounting plate is provided with screw holes with the same spacing as the threaded holes for optional screw-fixing with either the lock cylinder or the adapter. The mounting plate, however, has fasteners for fixing the actuator housing on the mounting plate, for example several threaded holes into which the actuator housing is fastened by screws. The mounting plate comprises a first aperture for a mechanical driver-connection, which is a connection between the rotary actuator and the lock cylinder, and wherein the first aperture and the threaded holes are provided on a center line of which is vertical when properly installed.
Optionally, and in accordance with the above specifically described adapter, the adapter has an extent within a circumscribed circle having a diameter of 17 mm in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the threaded holes, and the extent in a direction perpen- dicular to a center line connecting the centers of the threaded holes is larger than 14 mm.
As described above, the adapter for the bracket apertures that are used in connection with the lock cylinders of the Euro-type has outer dimensions that fall within a circle with a diameter of 17 mm. For example, the adapter is equipped with two or more threaded holes, the centers of which are on a vertically oriented center line when correctly mounted. In a specific embodiment, there is provided a flange on either side of the center line, which extends to a distance of more than 7 mm from the center line. Moreover, the adapter comprises a projecting profile with two straight parallel edges which are also parallel to the vertical center line of the adapter and which have a mutual distance of 10 mm. Upon insertion into the bracket aperture, the two flanges bear against the back of the cover bracket, and the projecting profile in the vertical orientation fits into the elongated vertical portion of the bracket aperture. Advantageously, the projecting profile is restricted to not extend more forward than a half mm relative to the flanges, whereby it will not prevent the cover bracket from being clamped between the adapter and the mounting plate, in those cases where the wall thickness of the cover bracket is more than 0.5 mm. In a further embodiment, the adapter comprises a first part and a separate second part, said first part comprising the flanges and the threaded holes, and the other part comprising the projecting profile. For example, the projecting profile is provided with recesses which are dimensionally adapted to the threaded holes, so that the screws for the threaded holes may extend through the recesses. The projecting profile is received loosely in the first part, wherein the recesses, however, fix the projecting profile by cooperation between the recesses and the screws in the threaded holes.

Detailed Description of the Invention
FIG. la shows a lock 1 of the Euro-type. This type is characterized by a cross-sectional shape having an upper circular portion 2 with a diameter of 17 mm and a lower elongated portion 3 with a width of 10 mm, which in typically correct mounted state is vertical. The total height of the lock cylinder 1 is 33 mm. A pivoting lock-bolt 4 is provided for lateral swing to grasp the mechanism that displaces the bolt in the lock. The width of the pawl 4 is typically about 9.4 mm in a slit 5 having a width of 10 mm. A threaded hole 6 is used for screw-fixing the lock cylinder 1 in the door. When such Euro-type lock cylinders 1 are mounted in a door, typically, they extend through a cover bracket 7, which is mounted on top of the door, for example, a key plate, as shown in FIG. 4 or a cylinder plate as shown in FIG. lb. Such a cover bracket 7 is provided with an aperture 8 corresponding to the cylinder lock 1 and, therefore, also has an upper circular portion 8 a with a diameter slightly larger than the 17 mm of the lock, typically between 17 and 19 mm, for instance 18-19 mm, and an elongated lower portion 8b having a width of a little more than 10 mm, typically between 10 and 12 mm, for example 11-12 mm. FIG. 2a shows the outer side of a door leaf 10 without cover bracket but with an open passage 13 with access to the lock cylinder 1, wherein a Euro-type cylinder lock 1 is inserted, and a screw 9 is used for screw-fixing the cylinder lock 1 in the door leaf 10. A handle 11 on the door leaf 10 is used for moving a sliding latch 12a, and the lock cylinder 1 engages with a lock-bolt 12b such that rotation of the cylinder lock pawl 4 in the lock cylinder 1 displaces the lock-bolt 12b in and out of the door leaf 10, which in locked state is secured by engagement of the lock-bolt 12b in a corresponding strike plate in the frame, which is not shown. FIG. 2b shows a door blade 10 from the inner side, where a cylinder lock 1 is being inserted for mounting. The cylinder lock 1 is provided with a driver 14 for operating the lock by an electro-mechanical actuator. For mounting of the electro-mechanical actuator, there are provided two screw holes 15a, 15b at the end of the lock cylinder 1. FIG. 3a shows a cover bracket 7 in the form of a cylinder plate, wherein the lock cylinder 1 is not long enough to reach through the aperture 8, whereas the lock cylinder of FIG. 3b is long enough. A cover bracket 7 in the form of a key plate with a corresponding aperture 8 for a lock cylinder of the Euro-type is shown by way of example in FIG. 4.
An actuator system 16 is shown in FIG. 5a. It comprises a cylindrical actuator housing 17 with a cylinder axis 18, and wherein the actuator housing 17 is delimited by a cylindrical handle 19 having an outer diameter of between 6 and 9 cm and a circular back plate 20 and front plate 21 on opposite ends of the handle 19. The front plate 21 includes a visual indicator 23 and is provided with a number of LEDs 22 which indicate the status of the lock, such as locked or open state, for example, by displaying green or red. As an option, the actuator housing 17 may be provided with a central control knob 24. The back of the actuator housing 17 is shown in FIG. 5b. Observed on the back is a first rotatable driver connection 25 for receiving a driver 14 and a second rotatable driver-connection 26, which can optionally be used depending on the type of lock, wherein both driver-connections 25, 26 are part of the rotary actuator and are provided with a coupling 31 into which the driver 14 is inserted. For lock cylinders of the Euro- type, typically, the first rotatable driver-connection 25 is used. An example of a concrete embodiment of the actuator housing 17 with details of the rotary actuator and battery as a power supply is given in Danish Patent DK17991B 1 and U.S. Patent Ap- plication US2015/0096341.
On the back, by means of screw holes 27, a mounting plate 30 is secured, which is also shown separately in FIG. 6b.The mounting plate 30 has a first aperture 28, through which the driver 14 extends into the first rotatable driver connection 25 of the actuator housing 17. In the mounting plate 30, there are provided a series of hole pairs 32 for installation in various types of locks and doors. Along a center line 29 that also extends through the center of the first aperture 28, there is provided a pair of screw holes 33a, 33b. These are intended for the screws 33 that extend into the threaded holes 15a, 15b in the lock cylinder 1. By these screws, the mounting plate can be connected firmly to the lock cylinder 1. The lock cylinder 1 is largely constructed according to the Euro-type but modified with the two threaded holes 15a and 15b.
FIG. 7 shows an example in which the mounting plate 30 does not sit directly on the door leaf 10 but is mounted on a cover bracket 7 in the form of a key plate and fixed by means of screws 33 against the lock cylinder 1 or where instead of screw holes 15a and 15b of the lock cylinder 1, there is used an adapter, which is explained below in the event of the lock cylinder 1 not being long enough to be flush with the cover bracket 7. In those cases, where the lock cylinder is not long enough to extend through the cover bracket 7, for example in the form of a cylinder plate or key plate, there will be a spacing between the surface of the cover bracket 7 and the front edge of the cylinder lock 1, as also shown in FIG. 3a. If this distance is large, twisting between the actuator housing 17 and the lock cylinder 1 easily occurs due to the long screws 33 necessary for the coupling. In order to avoid this, there is provided a different mounting solution involving an adapter.
This adapter 35 engages behind the cover bracket 7 and is screwed together with the mounting plate 30 on the front of the cover bracket 7 in order to clamp the cover bracket 7 between the adapter 35 and the mounting plate 30. To ease assembly so that the cover bracket 7 is not to be taken off, the adapter 35 is designed so that it fits through the 17-19 mm large circular portion of the aperture 8 in the cover bracket 7 but engages behind the 10-12 mm wide elongated vertical portion of the aperture 8. The dimensions of the adapter 35 are, therefore, smaller than the circular portion 8a of the aperture 8 and are is typically kept within the dimensions of the cross-section of the lock cylinder 1. An example is shown in FIG. 8.
As is apparent from FIG. 8, the adapter 35 has outer dimensions that are within a circle with a diameter of 17 mm. In fact, the curved edges are formed with a diameter of just 17 mm. Accordingly, the adapter 35 fits through the circular portion 8a of bracket aperture 8, which is formed with a slightly larger diameter such that the lock cylinder fits through. The adapter 35 is equipped with two threaded holes 36a, 36b, with their center on a vertically oriented center line 38 when correctly mounted. The threaded holes 36a, 36b have a spacing corresponding to the spacing of the screw holes 33 a, 33b in the mounting plate, as shown in FIG. 6b. Referring to FIG. 6c, in which the adapter 35 with the two screw holes 33 a, 33b replaces the lock cylinder 1, the mounting plate 30 will be screwed onto the adapter 35 in a similar manner as illustrated in FIG. 7, in which the two screws 33 extend through the mounting plate 30 and into the threaded holes 36a, 36b of the adapter.
Two flanges 39a, 39b are provided, one on each of side of the center line 38 for acting as a stop on the back of the cover bracket 8 so that the mounting plate 30 bears against the front of the cover bracket 8 and the flanges 39a, 39b against the back of the cover bracket 8, by which the cover bracket 8 is clamped between the mounting plate 30 and the flanges 39a, 39b by screw-assembly with screws 33.
To ease assembly, the adapter 35 has a protruding profile 37 with two straight parallel edges 40a, 40b that are also parallel with the vertical center line 38 of the adapter 35 and that have a mutual distance of 10 mm. The profile 37, thus, has a width of 10 mm such that it fits into the lower elongate portion 8b of the aperture 8 of the cover bracket 7 when suitable vertically oriented during assembly. This protruding profile 37 provides a guide for appropriate vertical orientation of the threaded holes 36a, 36b during assembly. In order not to protrude out from the front of the cover bracket 7 and thereby prevent proper clamping of the cover bracket 7 between the adapter 35 and the mounting plate 30, the projecting profile 37 is delimited to not protrude more forward than half a mil- limeter relatively to the flanges 39a and 39b, whereby this half mm of the foremost portion of the projecting profile 37 is received in the elongated lower portion 8b of the aperture 8 in the cover bracket 7.
The other specified dimensions in FIG. 8 serve only as an example, and the total thickness of can be varied. Similarly, the spacing and the size of the threaded holes 36a and 36b can be adapted to the screw holes 33a and 33b of the mounting plate and are therefore not bound to specific dimensions. However, it is advantageous if the spacing between the threaded holes 36a, 36b and the thread diameter is the same as that of the threaded holes 15a, 15b provided in the lock cylinder 1, if the mounting plate 30 must be able to interact with the adapter 35 as well as with the lock cylinder 1, as shown in FIG. 6.
It is noted that the adapter 35 advantageously can be produced in two parts, which is shown in detail in FIG. 9a and 9b, in which the one part is the projecting profile 37 and the second part is the quasi-circular part with the flanges 39a, 39b and a back plate 41, wherein the threaded holes 36a, 36b are provided. When screw-fixing, the protruding profile 37 will be squeezed between the back plate 41 and the mounting plate 30. This ensures a safe and long-lasting assembly. In order to fix the projecting profile 37 relatively to the back plate 41, the projecting profile 37 is provided with recesses 42 for the screws 33, which extend from the mounting plate 30 through the recesses 42 and into the threaded holes 36a, 36b.
In summary, a mounting plate 30 is fastened by an adapter 35 to a cylinder lock's cover bracket 7 on a door leaf 10. The attached mounting plate 30 holds an actuator hous- ing 17 to the door leaf 10. By cover brackets with apertures designed for lock cylinders of the Euro-type and where the aperture 8 has a circular upper portion 8a and a narrower elongated vertically lower portion 8b, the adapter 35 is formed with an extent that is within the circular portion 8b but wider than the elongated portion 8b, so that the the adapter 35 can be inserted into the upper portion 8a of the bracket aperture 8 and can be displaced downwards behind the lower portion 8b in order to grip behind it for securing the mounting plate 30 when the adapter 35 and the mounting plate 30 are screwed together with the cover bracket 7 therein between.
