This patent application claims the benefit of priority of U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial Number 62/239,600, titled "DESK WITH STOOL," to James R. Lucas, filed on October 9, 2015, which is incorporated by reference herein in its entirety.
This disclosure generally relates to systems and methods for desk systems having worksurfaces including sitting or standing uses. BACKGROUND
Modem ergonomic work practices have encouraged working in both a sitting position and a standing position to utilize various muscle groups, increase circulation, increase efficiency, and increase comfort. OVERVIEW
This disclosure describes, among other things, a desk system that can include desk, leg assembly , a base or foot portion, a worksurface, and a movable a seat assembly. The desk can be compact and the seat assembly can be movabiy coupled to the base of the desk. The desk can be configured for use in a sitting position and a standing position. In an example, the leg assembly can be coupled to the base at a first end and coupled to the worksurface at a second end. In an example, the leg assembly can be configured as one piece and the height of the worksurface will not be adjustable. In another exampl e, the leg assembly can include a first member that is slidably coupled to a second member. The length of the leg assembly can be adjusted by moving the second member upward or downward. In another example, the l eg assembly can include a iockable energy storage member such as a spring, a gas stmt, or an elastomeric band that can allow the length of the leg assembly to be adjusted with minimal force.
The seat assembly can include a seat support member coupled to the base of the desk, a seat support arm movabiy coupled to one of the base or the seat support member, and a seat that provides a surface for sitting. The seat assembly can be moved backward so it is out of the way and a user can work at the desk in a standing position. In another example, the seat assembly can be coupled to the desk by a hinge assembly that can allow the seat assembly to rotate in a horizontal plane between a stowed position for a standing user and an extended position for a sitting user.
For the purposes of this disclosure, the term "desk" can include any sort of desk, table, or other worksurface. "Worksurface" can include any generally horizontal surface, but is not limited to surfaces used for "work". In addition, the desk can be configured to support any item that can benefit by an integrated stool and in such cases, the item can be substituted for the "worksurface".

In Example 1, a desk system can comprise: a desk including: a worksurface; at least one leg assembly coupled to the worksurface, the at least one leg assembly including: a leg coupled to the worksurface; a foot coupled to the leg; a seat assembly configured to couple to the foot, the seat assembly including: a seat; a riser having an upper end and a lower end, the upper end coupled to the seat; a base coupled to the lower end; a hinge assembly configured to couple the desk and the seat assembly at the foot and the base.
In Example 2, the desk system of Example 1 can optionally be configured such that the hinge assembly includes: a seat assembly bracket coupled to the base; and a desk bracket coupled adjacent to a front end of the foot, wherein the hinge assembly is configured to allow the seat assembly to rotate in a horizontal plane between a stowed position under the worksurface and an extended position for sitting.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION FIG. 1 illustrates a perspective view of a desk system, in accordance with at least one example of this disclosure. The desk system 100 can include a desk 20 that can be coupled to a seat assembly 22. The desk 20 can include a worksurface 24 that can be supported by one or more leg assemblies 26A, 26B. The worksurface 24 can be located at a height that is comfortable for a standing person to use as a worksiiriace 24, In another example the desk 20 can be height adjusiable to locate the worksurface 24 at a variety of heights. Each leg assembly 26A, 26B can include a support bracket 28, a leg 30, and a foot 32. The support bracket 28 and the foot 32 can be configured in a cantilevered configuration 34 such that the leg 30 can be near a rear edge 36 of the worksurface 24.
The desk 20 can be coupled to a seat assembly 22 by a hinge assembly 38. The seat assembly can include a seat 40, a riser 42 and a base 44. The riser 42 can be a vertical support member and can extend from an upper end 46 to a lower end 48. The seat 40 can be coupled to the upper end 46. The base 44 can be coupled to the lower end 48. The seat assembly 22 can include a foot rest 50. The foot rest 50 can be coupled to the riser 42 and can be height adjustable to accommodate varied user heights and sitting positions. The hinge assembly 38 can include a seat assembly bracket 52 that can be coupled to the base 44, and a desk bracket 54 that can be coupled to the foot 32. The desk bracket 54 and the seat assembly bracket 52 can be configured as flat members that can be substantially parallel with a floor surface 56. The desk bracket 54 and the seat assembly bracket 52 can be rotatingly coupled so that the seat assembly 22 can rotate in a horizontal plane 58 from an extended position 60 configured for sitting on the seat 40 to a stowed position 62 configured for working on the desk 20 in a standing position (see FIG. 2 and FIG. 10).
In the example configuration shown in FIG. 1, the seat 40 has been illustrated as a circular stool type seat, but can be configured in any form comfortable for sitting and can include arm rests, and/or a back rest portion (not depicted). The seat 40 can be rectangularly shaped and/or include straight and/or curvilinear portions. The seat 40 can be padded with a cushion portion. The foot rest 50 has been illustrated as a circular type, but can be configured in any form comfortable for resting one or more feet. The foot rest 50 can be rectangularly- shaped and/or include straight and/or curvilinear portions. Although the riser 42 has been illustrated as a single support column but can be configured with multiple vertical members, such as one, two, three, or four vertical members. In FIG. 1, the base 44 has been illustrated as circular, but can be configured in any manner to provide a contact point between the seat assembly 22 and a floor surface 56. The base 44 can be shaped as curved or rectangular or contain a combination of straight and curved portions.
FIG. 2 illustrates a perspective view of a desk system 100, in accordance with at least one example of this disclosure. The seat assembly 22 can be configured to rotate on the hinge assembly 38 in a horizontal plane 58 from the extended position 60 (see FIG. I) to the stowed position 62, In the stowed position 62, the seat assembly can be positioned underneath the worksurface 24 and can allow a user to stand adjacent any of the sides 64A, 64B, 64C, 64D of the desk 20 and work at the desk 20. The foot rest 50 can be configured so that it can be used for resting one foot while a user works in the standing position. The leg assemblies 26A, 26B can be located adjacent two opposing sides such as side 64B and side 64D of the desk 20 and can provide space between sides 64B and side 64D to stow the seat assembly 22. When the seat assembly 22 is moved into the stowed positio 62, the base 44 can be located between foot 32A and foot 32B.
The base 44 can include a contact member 66 that can be configured to rest on a floor surface 56 (see FIG 1). The contact member 66 can be configured as circular, rectangular, U-shaped, or have a combination of straight and curvilinear shapes. The contact member 66 can be a unitary piece or contain multiple portions. The contact member 66 can be coupled to the riser 42 by one or more connecting members 68A, 68B, 68C (see FIG. 3 for 68C). The connecting members 68A, 68B, 68C can angle upward from the contact member 66 to provide a cone shape.
The foot rest 50 can include an outer member 70 and one or more connecting arms 72A, 72B, 72C. The outer member 70 can be configured as circular, rectangular, U-shaped, or have a combination of straight and curvilinear shapes. The connecting arms 72A, 72B, 72C can couple the outer member 70 to the riser 42. The riser 42 can have and elongated tubular shape that in cross section can be round, rectangular, irregularly shaped, or have a combination of straight and curvilinear portions. The lower end 48 can be received into one or both of the foot rest 50 and the base 44. In an example, the base 44 can be attached to the foot rest 50 and the foot rest 50 can be attached to the riser 42. In an example the base 44 and the foot rest 50 can be an integral unit. FIG. 3 illustrates a side view of a desk system 100, in accordance with at least one example of this disclosure. The caniilevered configuration 34 can be provided by the shape of the support bracket 28 and/or the shape of the foot 32. The leg 30 can be positioned generally adjacent side 64C of the worksurface 24. The support bracket 28 can include a support side 74, an extension side 76, a contact side 78, and a tip 80. The support bracket 28 can define a cutout 8 ! that can allow the support bracket 28 to be configured with a reduced weight. The support side 74 and the extension side 76 can meet at an apex 82 that can define a mounting portion 83 for coupling the support bracket 28 to the leg 30. The contact side 78 can provide an attachment surface 87 for coupling the leg assembly 26A to the worksurface 24.
The foot 32 can include a foot support side 84, a foot extension side 86, a front end 88, and a floor contact side 90. The foot 32 can define a foot cutout 92 that can allow the foot 32 to be configured with a reduced weight. The foot support side 84 can be longer than the front end 88 to generally define a trapezoidal shape 94. The foot support side 84 can define a leg mount 96 configured to couple the foot 32 to the leg 30. In an example, the hinge assembly 38 can be close to or even touching the floor surface 56 and does not trip, entangle, or otherwise prevent movement of a person's feet while entering and/or maintaining a sitting position on the seat assembly 22.
The caniilevered configuration 34 can provide support for a downward force 98 on the worksurface 24. In an example the caniilevered configuration 34 can provide support for a downward force 98 on side 64A and allow leg 30 to be located adjacent side 64C of the worksurface 24. In an alternative example, all or portions of the desk 20 can be integrally formed (e.g. see FIG.12 having one piece worksurface/1 eg/foot (base)).
FIG. 4 illustrates a front view of a desk system 100, in accordance with at least one example of this disclosure. The legs 30A, 30B can define a series of apertures 102A, 102B that can provide different mounting positions of the legs 30A, 30B within the feet 32A, 32B. This can allo a height 104 of the worksurface 24 to be adjusted by adjusting a length of the legs 3 OA, 30B between the support brackets 28A, 28B and the feet 32A, 32B, respectively. In an example, the height 104 can be adjusted by providing legs 3 OA, 30B each having two or more telescoping members.
In an example, one or more leg assemblies 26 A, 26B can be coupled to a desk counterbalance mechanism that can include energy storage members such as extension springs, elastomer straps, gas springs, or any combination of the aforementioned energy storage members. The desk counterbalance mechanism can provide a force to bias the worksurface 24 in an upward direction 106 and can aid in supporting weight on the worksurface 24 and in raising and lowering the worksurface 24.
In an example, the seat assembly 22 can include a height adjustment mechanism. In an example, the seat height 108 can be adjusted by providing the riser 42 with two or more telescoping members. In an example, the seat assembly 22, can be coupled to a seat counterbalance mechanism that can include an energy storage member such as an extension spring, an elastomer strap, a gas spring, or any combination of the aforementioned energy storage members. The seat counterbalance mechanism can provide a force to bias the seat 40 in an upward direction 106 and can aid in supporting weight on the seat 40 and in raising and lowering the seat 40,
The worksurface 24 can include a cupholder 110 and a tablet holder 112, The tablet holder 1 12 and the cupholder 1 10 can define recesses in the worksurface 24 and can be positioned so as not to interfere with the attachment of the support brackets 28A, 28B.
FIG. 5 illustrates a top view of a desk system 100, in accordance with at least one example of this disclosure. The seat assembly 22 ca be positioned in the extended position 60. The hinge assembly 38 can allow the seat assembly 22 to rotate relative to the worksurface 24 and can be placed a variable distance from the worksurface 24 to accommodate different sized users in the sitting position. The cupholder 110 and a tablet holder 112 can be located adjacent side 64C to provide a large working area in the worksurface 24.
FIG. 6 illustrates a top view of a desk system, in accordance with at least one example of this disclosure. The seat assembly 22 (see FIG, 5) can be rotated at the hinge assembly 38 so that the desk 20 can be utilized by a user in a standing position. As shown, the seat assembly 22 can be positioned under the worksurface 24.
FIG. 7 illustrates a bottom perspective view of a desk system 100, in accordance with at least one example of this disclosure. The foot 32A can include a bottom surface 114. In an example, the floor contact side 90 can include a bottom surface 1 14. The desk bracket 54 can be coupled to the foot 32A adjacent the front end 88. In an example the desk bracket 54 can be coupled to the foot 32A at the bottom surface 114. The desk bracket 54 can include a stop member 116 that can limit movement of the seat assembly bracket 52. The stop member 1 16 can define an angled portion 118 of the desk bracket 54 that can allow the seat assembly 22 to be placed in the stowed position 62 fully underneath the worksurface 24 (see FIG 2). In an example, the stop member 116 can prevent the seat assembly 22 from contacting other portions of the desk 20 (see FIG 2).
The bottom surface 114 can include one or more glide members 120 A,
120B that can be configured to allow the desk 20 to be either slidable on the floor surface or provide a friction member that can prevent sliding on the floor surface. In an example, the hinge assembly 38 can be coupled to the bottom surface 1 14. In an example, the hinge assembly 38 can be coupled to other portions of the desk 20.
The base 44 can include a lower surface 122 that can contact the floor surface 56 (see FIG 3). The lower surface 122 can include one or more glide members 120C, I 20D, I 20E that can be configured to allow the seat assembly 22 to be either slidable on the floor surface 56 or provide a friction member that can prevent sliding on the floor surface 56. The seat assembly bracket 52 can be coupled to the lower surface 122. In an example, the lunge assembly 38 can be coupled to other portions of the seat assembly 22. In an example, the hinge assembly 38 can be another type of movabl e coupling between the seat assembly 22 and the desk 20 other than the flat hinge illustrated, such as a double acting hinge, a spring loaded hinge, or a telescoping member that allows movement of the seat assembly 22 between the stowed position 62 and the extended position 60 (See FIGS, 1 and 2). FIGS. 8-11 illustrate a perspective view of a desk system 200, in accordance with at least one example of this disclosure. The desk system 200 can include a base 202, a leg assembly 204, a worksurface 206, and a seat assembly 208. The base 202 can rest against a floor surface 56, or can include casters or wheels for portability. The leg assembly 204 can include a leg 210 that can extend between a first end 209 and a second end 21 1. The first end 209 can be coupled to the base 202. The second end 211 can be coupled to the worksurface 206.
The worksurface 206 can be unsupported by brackets as shown or in another example can include support brackets (see FIGS. I -7) coupled to the leg 210 and/or the worksurface 206. The leg assembly 204 can be configured as non-adjustable in height. A seat assembly 208 can include a seat support 212, a seat support arm 2.14 and a seat 217. The seat support 212 can be coupled to the base 202. The seat support arm 214 can extend between a base end 213 and a sitting end 215.
A seat 217 can be coupled or integrally formed at the sitting end 215. The base end 213 can be movably coupled to either the base 202 or the seat support 212. Rotational movement for the seat support arm 214 can be provided by a hinge 219 coupled between the seat support arm 214 and one of the base 202 or the seat support 212. In another example, the seat support arm 214 can be movably attached to the base, by sliding means to position the stool out of the way in a stowed position 220. The seat support arm 214 can rotate in a vertical plane 216 between an extended position 218 and the stowed position 220 see FIG. 11),
A sitting foot rest 222 can be coupled to the base 202 and/or the leg assembly 204 to provide a sitting foot rest 222 for a sitting user 224 (see FIG 10). A standing foot rest 226 can be coupled to the seat support 212 and can provide a foot rest for a standing user 228 (see FIG 11). A pad 230 can be included as an extension 232 of the base 202 for a standing user 228 to have increased standing comfort. The extension 232 can also be used structurally to prevent the desk system 200 from tipping when the sitting user 224 sits on the seat 217. An outer surface of the pad 230 can be covered with a soft material for standing. The leg 210 can be configured in various lengths, to allow comfortable use for ranges of user's heights. The works urface 206 can be approximately at the elbow height of the user (see FIG 10). In an example (not shown), a leg 210 can extend from a central portion of the base 202 and be coupled to a central portion of a worksurface 206. The base 202 and worksurface 206 can be large enough so that a seat assembly 208 can be provided on both sides of the leg 210 allowing two persons to use the worksurface 206 side-by-side or facing oppositely.
FIG. 10 illustrates a perspective view of a desk system 200, with the seat assembly 208 the extended position 218 for sitting. The seat support arm 214 can be moved forward 234 and portions of the seat support arm 214 can rest against the seat support 212. The seat support arm 214 can rest against the seat support 212 at an angle 236, such that when the seat assembly 208 is used in the extended position 218 (e.g. a sitting position), the weight of the sitting user 224 can prevent the seat support arm 214 from moving. Downward force 236 from the weight of the sitting user 224 on the seat 217 can keep the seat support arm 214 firmly against the seat support 212. The worksurface 206 can be configured to be approachable and/or useable from all sides for collaboration.
FIG. 1 1 illustrates a perspective view of a desk system 200, with the seat support arm 214 located in the stowed position 220, in accordance with at least one example of this disclosure. Without weight upon the seat 217, the seat support arm 214 can be moved backward 238, such as rotated backward 238 from the hinge 219 (see also FIG 13). The seat 217 can now be located under the worksurface 206 in the stowed position 220. The stowed position 220 ca provide a standing user 228 with adequate space to work at the worksurface while m a standing position. A standing foot rest 226 can be configured as a portion of the seat support 212 and can provide a location where the standing user 228 can rest a foot 240 while standing.
FIG. 12 illustrates a perspective view of a desk system 200, in accordance with at least one example of this disclosure. The base 202 can have a flat bottom surface which allows it to be stationary on the floor as seen in FIG 12. In other examples, at least two wheels can be attached to the base 202 to move the desk system 200 easily. In an example, the base 202, the leg assembly 204 and the worksurface 206 can be one integrally formed piece of material. Materials used for the desk system 200 can be wood, metal, plastics, polymers, rubbers, composites, fiberglass, and combinations of the foregoing.
FIG. 13 illustrates a side view of a desk system 200, in accordance with at least one example of this disclosure. The leg assembly 204 can be configured as a telescoping leg 242 having a first member 244 slidablv coupled to a second member 246. The desk system 200 can be configured such that height of the worksurface 206 can be adjustable during set up. In an example, desk system 200 can be configured such that height of the worksurface 206 can be adjustable at any time. In an example, the leg assembly 204 can be made up of two members, and they can be attached together at different locations to set the worksurface 206 at different heights. Adjusting the length of the leg assembly 204 can adjust the height of the worksurface and can bring the worksurface to a standing elbow height of the user. The leg assembly 204 can be adjusted from a maximum length for taller users and to a minimum length for shorter users. The leg assembly 204 can be positioned at any length between the maximum and minimum. In another example, the telescoping leg 242 can include a lockable energy storage member such as a spring, a gas strut, or an elastonieric band that can allow the length of the telescoping leg 242 to be adjusted with minimal force.
The seat support arm 214 can tilt forward 234 and place the seat 217 in the extended position 218 for sitting. When the seat 217 is not needed, the seat support arm 214 can tilt backward 238 to hide the seat 217 under the
worksurface 206 in the stowed position 220. The stowed position 220 of the seat 217 can allow the user to stand in front of the worksurface 206.

Claims

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. A desk system comprising:
a desk including:
a worksurface;
at least one leg assembly coupled to the worksurface, the at least one leg assembly including:
a leg coupled to the worksurface;
a foot coupled to the leg;
a seat assembly configured to couple to the foot, the seat assembly including:
a seat;
a riser having an upper end and a lower end, the upper end coupled to the seat;
a base coupled to the lower end;
a hinge assembly configured to couple the desk and the seat assembly at the foot and the base.
2. The desk system of claim 1, wherein the hinge assembly includes:
a seat assembly bracket coupled to the base; and a desk bracket coupled adj acent to a front end of the foot, wherein the hinge assembly is configured to allow the seat assembly to rotate in a horizontal plane between a stowed position under the worksurface and an extended position for sitting.
3. The desk system of claim 2, wherein the seat assembly bracket is attached to a lower surface of the base.
4. The desk system of claim 2, wherein the desk bracket is attached to a lower surface of the foot.
5. The desk system of claim 2, wherein the desk bracket includes a stop member that limits movement of the seat assembly bracket.
6. The desk system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one leg assembly includes a first leg assembly, wherem the leg is a first leg and the foot is a first foot, and wherein the at least one leg assembly further includes:
a second leg assembly coupled to the worksurface, the second leg assembly including;
a second leg coupled to the worksurface; and
a second foot coupled to the leg.
7. The desk system of claim 1, wherein the desk is height adjustable.
8. The desk system of claim I, wherein the leg defines a series of adjustment apertures and the leg slidably engages the foot.
9. The desk system of claim 6, wherein the first leg includes a first member slidably engaging a second member in a telescoping configuration and the second leg includes a third member slidably engaging a fourth member in a telescoping configuration.
10. The desk system of claim 1 , wherein the seat assembly is height adjustable.
11. The desk system of claim 1, wherein the riser includes a first member slidably engaging a second member in a telescoping configuration.
12. The desk system of claim i, wherein the base includes a contact member and at least two connecting members that couple the contact member to the riser.
13. The desk system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one leg assembly includes a support bracket coupled to the worksurface, and wherein the foot and the support bracket have a cantilevered configuration.
14. The desk system of claim i, wherein the seat assembly includes a foot rest coupled to the riser.
15. The desk system of claim 14, wherein the base is configured to attach to the foot rest and the foot rest is attached to the riser.
16. The desk system of claim 1, wherein the worksurface includes a tablet holder.
17. The desk system of claim 1, wherein the worksurface includes a cup holder.
1 8. The desk system of claim 1, further comprising a desk counterbalance mechanism configured to bias the worksurface in a raised position.
19. The desk system of claim 1 , further comprising a seat counterbalance mechanism configured bias the seat in a raised position.
20. The desk system of claim 19, wherein the seat counterbalance mechanism is a gas spring.
21. A desk system comprising:
a height adjustable desk including:
a worksurface;
a first leg assembly coupled to the worksurface, the first leg assembly including:
a first support bracket coupled to the worksurface; a first leg coupled to the first support bracket;
a first foot coupled to the first leg, wherein the first foot and the first support bracket have a cantilevered configuration;
a second leg assembly coupled to the worksurface, the second leg assembly including:
a second support bracket coupled to the worksurface;
a second leg coupled to the second support bracket; a second foot coupled to the second leg, wherein the second foot and the second support bracket have a cantilevered configuration;
a height adjustable seat assembly configured to couple to one of the first or second foot, the height adjustable seat assembly including:
a seat;
a riser having an upper end and a lower end, the upper end coupled to the seat;
a base coupled to the lower end, wherein the base includes a contact member and at least two connecting members that couple the contact member to the lower end;
a circular foot rest coupled to the riser;
a hinge assembly configured to couple the desk and the height adjustable seat assembly at one of the first or second foot and the base, the hinge assembly including:
a seat assembly bracket attached to a lower surface of the base; a d
a desk bracket attached to a lower surface adjacent to a front end of one of the first or second foot, wherein the hinge assembly is configured to allow the height adjustable seat assembly to rotate in a horizontal plane between a stowed position under the worksurface and an extended position for sitting.
