The vanity includes multiple functionalities that have heretofore never been assimilated into a single unit. By way of example, the vanity allows users to dress, groom, work on a computer or tablet, listen to music or other audio, iron clothes, store items, work at a desk, eat or drink, and so forth. The vanity can be accommodated for various users including physically challenged persons, the elderly, children, and outdoor users by making only slight modifications to the component parts used therein.

Description

MULTIPURPOSE VANITY
Field
[0001] The present invention relates generally to a multipurpose vanity that can be used as a vanity, a desk, or an organizer.
Background
[0002] Freestanding or portable vanities are well known in the art. For example, U. S. Patent No. 3,202,470 ("'470 patent") entitled "Portable Vanity Cabinet for Women," the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference, disclosed a semi-circular shaped vanity having several compartments and drawers for storing health and beauty items. The '470 patent was filed in 1964. Although, the embodiment described in the '470 patent did include a single electrical outlet, at the time people used far less electronic devices than they presently use. Moreover, the '470 patent contained only a single small mirror for use in applying make-up, styling one's hair, or performing grooming functions.
[0003] Another example of a portable vanity can be seen in U. S. Patent No. 3, 156,510 ("'510 patent") entitled "Portable Vanity," the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference. The '510 patent discloses a portable vanity that is contained within a suitcase-type case. The case has articulable legs that, when unfolded, allow the case to be transformed into a table like surface having several compartments. Although the inventors for the '510 patent filed their application in 1962, the style of portable vanity they disclosed is still in wide use today.
[0004] On the one hand, the '510 patent offers a compact solution for a portable vanity. One of the drawbacks of the '510 patent, however, is there is no place for a blow dryer, flat iron, or other electrical type of styling tool to be used in conjunction with the vanity. As a practical matter, that means a user could apply make-up or use the device for tweezing unwanted facial hair. But if that same user wanted to store the tools she needs for hair styling within this vanity, and use electrical outlets within the vanity to plug hair styling apparatuses into, she would be out of luck.
[0005] U. S. Patent No. 6,095, 156, ("Ί56 patent"), entitled "Beauty Utility Cart with Sterilizer," the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference, is an improvement in that it allows a user to store electronic devices for hair styling, hair maintenance, and personal grooming. The Ί56 patent is compact and provides a mechanism for organizing the cords of the styling devices. The Ί56 patent, however, does not have a mirror, which would facilitate applying make-up. It is not contained within a housing, thereby allowing dust to build up on the hair styling devices.
[0006] A more recent invention, U.S. Patent No. 8,870,307 ("'307 patent") entitled "Ready Station Vanity and Entertainment System," the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference, disclosed "[cjomponents of a hair and beauty ready station vanity and entertainment organizing system ... combined in a free-standing self-contained furnishing for use in domestic and commercial settings." See '307 patent at Abstract.
Because the '307 patent combined the idea of using a vanity, while simultaneously listening to music, it contained several outlets into which a user could plug a blow dryer, mobile phone, or similar device having music or video stored thereon.
[0007] In this way, the '307 patent addressed the common practice of getting dressed while listening to music. The '307 patent, does not however, have a charging station for electronic devices such as a phone, tablet, or laptop. In addition, the ready station vanity of the '307 patent did not have a flat surface, which would make applying make-up challenging.
Moreover, the storage area for the hair dryers, curling irons, and the like was visible to users and others seeing the ready station vanity. In some ways, this is unsightly because the number of cords, electrical outlets, and so forth makes the ready station vanity look messy.
[0008] Korean patent KR101425363 ("'363 Korean patent") entitled "Versatile makeup station," the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference, is a freestanding, fully enclosed vanity. In this way, the '363 Korean patent protects the interior contents from dust. It also includes a mirror, which enables users to apply make-up or style their hair, for example. In addition, there is a drawer and a collapsible shelf upon which users could place items. One of the short comings of the '363 Korean patent is that it is in a single unit, versus stackable units. The dimensions of the embodiments described in the '363 Korean patent fall within the following ranges: height: 63" to 75", width: 19" to 23", and depth: 6" to 9." Some of the drawbacks of having a single unit are: (1) the space required within a room to house the unit; and (2) the challenge of moving a single unit that is more than five (5) feet tall. In addition, the dimensions of the embodiments disclosed in the '363 Korean patent make it clear that the unit is very narrow, in fact, almost as narrow as some medicine cabinets. As such, it is not convenient to store all of the hair, make-up, and grooming tools that an individual routinely uses within the unit. The '363 Korean patent also suffers from the design flaws attendant to having a single door. Namely, the clearance required to open the door to get inside of the embodiments disclosed within the '363 Korean patent as well as the fact that a single mirror placed inside of the door does not allow the individual using the mirror to see the back of her head while she is styling her hair.
[0009] There is accordingly a need for a self-contained, stackable unit that provides multiple functions within a single piece of furniture, or multiple pieces of furniture in stackable embodiments. This multifunctional piece of furniture could serve as a vanity, closet, entertainment center, ironing station, and standing desk. By including all of these functionalities in a single unit, users will be able to save space in their apartments, homes or dorm rooms, as well as money, by buying a single unit rather than disparate separate units.

Detailed Description
[0033] Those of skill in the art will recognize throughout this specification that when like terms are used to describe features and functionalities of various portions of a particular embodiment, those same features and functionalities could be present in additional embodiments having aspects with like terms.
[0034] In today's world, people use more electronic devices than ever before while getting ready for their day. They have laptops, iPads, phones, speakers, hair dryers, straighteners, curling irons, electric toothbrushes, electric razors, electric face washing devices, etc. People need to charge these devices, which requires easy access to an electric strip. They prefer to use these devices while getting ready, which requires easy access to the devices because they use them intermittently, but frequently. They also have to store their devices, which can be unsightly because of all the wires attendant to each of these devices.
[0035] None of the prior art pieces accommodates all of these demands. As such, people commonly have electric strips placed all throughout their room or multiple rooms. It is extremely inefficient to go from room to room in order to get ready and to have to bend over to reach the floor to plug and unplug your devices every time you use them. It is also unsafe not having the electric strips in clear vision, to see if the strip is turned on or off, especially when dealing with items that heat up. It is also risky to have expensive and breakable items scattered throughout a room, where they can easily be stolen or broken. Lastly, it is unsightly to have many wires in clear view. [0036] The invention disclosed herein overcomes these and other shortcomings of the prior art by creating a stackable, enclosed, multifunctional vanity or organizer, hereinafter referred to as a multifunctional vanity without limitation. The multifunctional vanity can be used in many situations, such as, in college dorm rooms, in apartments where individuals share a bathroom, in trailers on movie locations, in theaters, in garages, in offices, in hotels, and the like.
[0037] A classic example of a situation where the multifunctional vanity would be ideal is when two individuals are sharing a living space having only a single bathroom. In this instance, for example with college students sharing an apartment, the bathroom is typically a place where people go to use the shower, toilet, or sink. Accordingly, they desire a certain level of privacy when they are in the bathroom. Although bathrooms may be large or small, they are typically only used by one person at a time for reasons of privacy.
[0038] On any given day, roommates may desire to use the functionality of the bathroom at the same time. For example, one roommate may want to shower, while another wants to apply make-up, perform personal grooming, shave facial hair with an electric razor, use the sink for rinsing laundry, or use the toilet. In any of these common instances, sharing a bathroom can be frustrating and lead to arguments. It would be much better if each person residing within the apartment was able to access the functionality of the bathroom vanity, e.g. , mirror, electric outlets, counter space, drawers for housing health and beauty products, and the like, from her own bedroom or other location within the apartment.
[0039] In this way, the traditional space for applying make-up, doing one's hair, and performing other grooming functions would shift from a place where only one person at a time can perform these functions, such as a bathroom, to a less private space, such as a bedroom or other living space within a home. If each occupant within the apartment had a multifunctional vanity according to the embodiments disclosed herein, the amount of time spent sharing the bathroom would diminish. This would increase the harmony of living together, as well as the efficiency of getting ready for work, school, special occasions, dinner, and the like.
[0040] In some embodiments, the multifunctional vanity is perfectly suited for use in a dorm room because its stackability allows it to be conveniently placed on a desk. Most dorms contain floors of living space having double occupancy dorm rooms and a communal shower/bathroom area. Dorm rooms typically have one or more single beds, a dresser, and a desk. Many students would prefer to do their hair, apply make-up, perform personal hygiene such as tweezing, or shaving in the privacy of their own room. This preference could be related to privacy, or perhaps a desire to listen to music, or better lighting, or avoiding carrying multiple products and/or grooming tools into the communal bathroom, among other reasons. These students would benefit by having a multifunctional vanity that they could place on their desk or dresser. The stackable nature of the multifunctional vanity facilitates this use.
[0041] In addition, college students are well known to move frequently, for example at the end of each year, or for short term internships, or jobs, and the like. As such, the stackable nature of the multifunctional vanity makes it easy for this group of users to break down the various pieces of the vanity, for example an upper portion as shown in FIG. 1, and one or more lower portions as shown in FIG. 6. In this way, it becomes much easier for college students, or their parents, to move their furniture. Each piece is lighter and more manageable in terms of getting up and down stairways than if the multifunctional vanity was created as a single unit as has been done in the prior art.
[0042] Similarly, in hotel rooms where the bathroom space may be small as compared with the number of occupants, or the hotel owners have decided that they could reduce the furniture expenditure by combining a vanity/desk/luggage rack/dresser/closet into a single unit, the embodiments described herein would be advantageous. More specifically, it is often the case that individuals visiting hotels never take the time to unpack their luggage, choosing instead to "live out of their suitcase" while they are traveling. In some embodiments suited to address this market, the multifunctional vanity could be dimensioned so as to be able to provide an open shelf for someone to place their luggage. This shelf would have enough clearance space for the individual to open his suitcase, leaving the top open, in a manner that would allow him to choose articles from within his luggage without ever having to unpack and place his items into dresser drawers.
[0043] FIG. 1 shows an embodiment of the multifunctional vanity 10. FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the same embodiment depicted in FIG. 1. In some embodiments, the multifunctional vanity 10 is stackable and enclosed. In some embodiments, the
multifunctional vanity 10 could have exterior handles, which would make moving it easier. In addition, hooks, locks, and other external hardware could be added to the multifunctional vanity 10 to allow additional storage for hanging items and the like.
[0044] The multifunctional vanity 10 has a first door 12 and a second door 14. In some embodiments, the first door 12 and the second door 14 can be nearly the same dimensions. Specifically, in these embodiments, the first door 12 and the second door 14 could be nearly half of the width of the multifunctional vanity 10. Those of skill in the art will appreciate that the term "nearly half is intended to mean that the doors will close so as to encase the interior of the multifunctional vanity 10 in a way similar to a hutch, double doorway in an entry way, cabinets, and so forth. In terms of attaching the first door 12 and the second door 14 to the multifunctional vanity 10, hinges or similar hardware could be used. In these embodiments, the doors 12, 14 could open within a range of about 270°, with 0° being a fully closed position.
[0045] Including the multifunctional vanity 10 within an enclosed housing, which also has two doors 12, 14 capable of being closed, serves multiple purposes. First, it makes transporting the multifunctional vanity 10 easier. Second, closing the doors 12, 14 allows a user to hide the contents of the interior of the multifunctional vanity 10 from others, which has an aesthetic value as well as a security value. For example, alternate embodiments could allow a lock to be placed on doors 12, 14 to further enhance security.
[0046] In embodiments having two doors 12, 14, users will appreciate this design if they want to use the multifunctional vanity 10 in a small space. Most dorm rooms and small apartments do not have the clearance for one door to open and close. If, for example, the multifunctional vanity 10 had one door, which was 30" wide, the user would need 30" of space in front of the multifunctional vanity 10 to open the door. In embodiments herein having a first door 12 and a second door 14, the user would only need 15" of clearance space to open each of the doors 12, 14, assuming the doors were equal width. In some
embodiments, the doors 12, 14 could be asymmetrically sized. These dimensions would obviously change as the width of the multifunctional vanity 10 changed.
[0047] In some embodiments, one or both of the first door 12 and the second door 14 could have a mirror 16 attached thereto. In FIGS. 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6, mirror 16 is depicted on the interior of the multifunctional vanity 10. In alternate embodiments, mirror 16 could be on the interior side wall of the multifunctional vanity 10. In an additional embodiment, mirror 16 could be on the rear wall of the interior of the multifunctional vanity 10. In alternate embodiments, mirror 16 could be on the exterior of multifunctional vanity 10. Mirror 16 could be on the exterior of doors 12, 14 or on the side or rear of multifunctional vanity 10.
[0048] In an alternate embodiment, shown in FIG. 3, the first door 12 could be partitioned into a first portion 18 and a second portion 19. Although the embodiment depicted in
FIGS. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 includes a mirror 16, those of skill in the art will recognize that the first door 12 would not have to have the mirror 16. In alternate embodiments, mirror 16 could be a cork board, white board, chalk board, hooks, art work such as a photographs, a painting, and the like. Similarly, the second door 14 could easily be partitioned in the same way as shown in FIG. 3. Therefore, embodiments could include one or both doors 12, 14 being partitioned and one or both doors 12, 14 having a mirror 16.
[0049] In embodiments having two mirrors 16, users will appreciate the ability to style their hair and see all sides of their head without having to use a hand-held mirror to see the back and sides of their hair. Currently, if an individual would like to see the back of her head, she typically uses a small, separate mirror as a means of obtaining views around the head. This is not optimal because if you want to look at your hair while you are styling it, instead of after it has been styled, you cannot do this with a handheld mirror. In embodiments herein, the user can see her hair in the mirrors 16 while she is styling it.
[0050] Referring again to FIG. 1, embodiments of the multifunctional vanity 10 can further comprise a sliding shelf 20 affixed to the interior of the multifunctional vanity 10. The sliding shelf 20 could be affixed to the multifunctional vanity 10 via a drawer slide, runner, or similar hardware. This hardware configuration would allow the sliding shelf 20 to easily move into and out of the multifunctional vanity 10. In this way, the sliding shelf 20 could serve many purposes, e.g. , a desktop; a space upon which to use a laptop; storage space for clothes, towels, handheld mirrors, and the like; a platform for using an ironing board; and similar functions obvious to those of skill in the art.
[0051] One of the problems that the sliding shelf 20 solves is the need to "clean up" one's workspace at the end of each day. This problem arises when work space and storage space are separate from one another. A classic example is the user who uses the top of her desk for doing homework. When she is done doing homework, she has to put her notebooks, pens and pencils, computer, and other work items into drawers, cubbies, shelves and other storage spaces if she wishes to tidy up. The next day, she has to pull it all back out again in order to continue doing homework or other desk work.
[0052] The same issue arises for individuals who may desire to use a vanity or bathroom sink space to spread out her grooming products, make-up, hair brushes, and the like. This individual also must engage in the circular loop of extricating what she needs to get ready from drawers, shelves, cubby holes, and the like, only to have to put it all back when she is finished getting ready. The next day, the same process is repeated.
[0053] The sliding shelf 20 alleviates this endless cycle by providing a flat surface upon which users can work, charge their devices, and then store their items in a neat and tidy fashion. For those living in shared space, such as a dorm, the ability to store items in a secure fashion is additionally beneficial for reducing theft. When users come back to the sliding shelf 20 the next day, everything is right where they left it. A user can spread out her lap top, notebooks, makeup, hair brushes, grooming supplies, and actively use the open space to write papers, do research, apply makeup, etc. When she is done, she can simply push the sliding shelf 20 in, place the hair brushes, make-up, and grooming supplies in drawers, cubby holes, and the like, close the doors 12, 14 and her space instantly becomes neat and secure. This design avoids having to clean up or put things back into a separate storage space on a daily basis. In this way, the multifunctional vanity 10 becomes an interactive storage space.
[0054] Although the sliding shelf 20 is shown as being nearly as wide as the multifunctional vanity 10, in alternate embodiments, the sliding shelf 20 could be of varying widths, ranging for example from two (2) inches to the full width of the multifunctional vanity 10, aside from a slight gap between the ends of the sliding shelf 20 and the interior of the multifunctional vanity 10 sufficient enough to allow for smooth extension from and replacement within the multifunctional vanity 10. In alternate embodiments, sliding shelf 20 could be a plurality of sliding shelves 20.
[0055] In addition, the multifunctional vanity 10 can further comprise a first storage shelf 22 for storing a plurality of styling tools, make-up, brushes, accessories, and the like. Styling tools could include a hair dryer, a flat iron, a curling iron, an electric razor, nose hair trimmers, tweezers, make-up brushes, eye liner pencils, toothbrushes, and the like. The storage shelf 22 could contain cutouts to allow for storing of the styling tools, cords attached to the styling tools or other electronic devices, make-up, brushes, accessories, trash receptacles, laundry, a tool box, a paper organizer, a shoe rack, drawers for clothes or appliances or electronics, tissue boxes, and an infinite number of items chosen from the world of consumer goods. The styling tools or cords could be stored in the space created by the cutouts or in containers placed within the cutouts. These containers could, for example and without limitation, be mesh wire baskets, pencil holders, a vase, or a custom-made receptacle designed. Similarly, the cutouts could be circular, ovular, square, rectangular, trapezoidal, hexagonal, octagonal, and so forth.
[0056] In some embodiments, the multifunctional vanity 10 includes an interior light 30. Alternate embodiments can have lights installed proximal to one or more mirrors 16. In FIG. 1, the mirror lights 32 are shown as being above the mirror 16. This proximity can be a very favorable location for lighting especially when applying makeup, shaving, tweezing, and the like. In alternate embodiments, mirror lights 32 could be placed along side mirror 16, underneath mirror 16, or in any combination thereof. The lights 30, 32 can be battery operated, solar powered, or run on A/C. In addition, they could be LED, fluorescent, compact fluorescent, incandescent, T8, high-intensity discharge, and the like.
[0057] The multifunctional vanity 10 can also include at least one power cord opening 40 designed to facilitate the flow of power from an extemal outlet or power source to the interior of the multifunctional vanity 10. FIG. 1 shows four power cord openings 40. In alternate embodiments, there could be more or less power cord openings 40, as would be obvious to those of skill in the art. In these embodiments, power cord openings 40 can be strategically placed so unsightly cords stream out the back of the multifunctional vanity 10. In these embodiments, users can easily charge their devices, access/use their devices in a user friendly manner, and store their devices in the aesthetically pleasing multifunctional vanity 10.
[0058] In addition, there could be one or more power coupling(s) 42 that are designed to secure a power strip to the interior of the multifunctional vanity 10. FIG. 1 depicts three (3) locations for power couplings 42. In alternate embodiments, there could be more or less power couplings 42. Although these power couplings 42 are depicted as being horizontal or vertical, they could in alternate embodiments be diagonal, or of any angular orientation. In addition, FIG. 5 shows how strategic location of power coupling(s) 42 can help a user store cords for electronic devices of all sorts in a neat and orderly fashion. [0059] In some embodiments, the location of the power couplings 42 can be chosen so as to be out-of-the-way thereby facilitating ease of access to items placed on shelves 20, 22, 24. In alternate embodiments, power coupling 42 locations could be chosen so as to allow power cords for electrical items that may be in use within the multifunctional vanity 10 to fall nicely into an out-of-the-way location such as a basket or cutout in, for example, shelves 20, 22, 24, 26.
[0060] In some embodiments, the power coupling 42 could be further comprised of holes configured to allow a standard electric strip to be affixed to the interior of the multifunctional vanity 10. In some embodiments, users could affix a power strip to the power coupling 42 with Velcro, screws, or any other suitable fastener. In some embodiments, it is contemplated that users could affix a smart power strip to the power couplings 42. In this way, they could use an app to remotely turn off a styling tool or other electronic device that they may have inadvertently left on.
[0061] Those of skill in the art will recognize that as wireless power evolves, a wireless power device could be used in lieu of an electrical outlet as depicted in FIGS. 5 and 6. The shape and size of power coupler 42 could be altered to accommodate wireless power connectors. Additionally, in some embodiments, there could be sufficient power couplers 42 to include power strips, power outlets, whether wired, wireless, or otherwise to enable a user to surround herself with electronic devices while she is using the multifunctional vanity 10.
[0062] Finally, power coupler 42 is pictured as a typical coupler for an electrical outlet or power strip in the United States. In alternate embodiments, power coupler 42 could be designed to accommodate electrical outlets and other power sources in various countries throughout the world.
[0063] FIGS. 1, 2, 5 and 6 also depict ventilation holes 44, which are included in some embodiments. These ventilation holes 44 allow heat built up from devices such as electronics, grooming tools, an iron, and the like to escape through the upper portion of the multifunctional vanity 10. In alternate embodiments, the ventilation holes 44 could be placed in the ceiling or on the sides of the multifunctional vanity 10 or in other locations. Power cord openings 40 also allow for ventilation of heat build-up within the multifunctional vanity 10. [0064] The multifunctional vanity 10 could also include a second storage shelf 24 for holding any number of articles including without limitation: health and beauty products, makeup, mobile phones, tablets, speakers, a coffee mug, a wine glass, a beer mug, a plate, a photo, a charging station, knickknacks, a pencil holder, vitamins, prescription medicines, and the like. In this way, the user would have the convenience of being able to drink her coffee, charge her phone, access all of her health and beauty products, look at a photo that has special meaning, all while getting ready at her personal multifunctional vanity 10.
[0065] FIG. 4 shows a perspective view of an embodiment of the second storage shelf 24. In this embodiment, the second storage shelf 24 is U-shaped, which provides functional as well as aesthetically pleasing space upon which to store items. The U-shape facilitates easy access to items that are stored on the second storage shelf 24 because the individual can easily see what is on the shelf 24 without having to move other items that may be stacked in front of an item of interest. In alternate embodiments, there could be a third shelf 26 having similar functionality.
[0066] The shelves 24, 26 can be strategically designed to run along the perimeter of the interior of the multifunctional vanity 10. In some embodiments, the shelves 24, 26 could be shorter than pictured, and could run along a single side of the interior of the multifunctional vanity 10 or along the back of the interior of the multifunctional vanity 10.
[0067] In embodiments where the shelves 24, 26 are narrow or U-shaped, the user can easily see and access all of her stored items. In addition, the user has more freedom of movement within the center of the multifunctional vanity 10, thereby facilitating ease of picking up and replacing electronic devices, grooming tools, accessories, reading glasses, cups, wine glasses, lotions, styling products, and anything else that may be stored on shelves 24, 26.
[0068] In some embodiments, the ends of the shelves 24, 26, which are located toward the front of the multifunctional vanity 10 can be strategically designed in shape, size, and adjustable height to accommodate items that people desire be within arm's length. For example, a rounded end on shelf 24 may be an ideal location for a coffee mug or wine glass, which needs room above to be picked up and put down frequently without knocking it, or nearby items, over. FIG. 5 shows one of several optimal locations for a mobile phone. When the phone is placed on the right edge of shelf 24, the user would have an unobstructed view of the phone, which facilitates Facetiming, taking selfies, watching videos, and the like. [0069] In some embodiments, shelves 24, 26 can be between three (3) to five (5) inches wide. In addition, shelves 24, 26 can be height adjustable, which could accommodate the varying heights of different lotion bottles, vitamin bottles, picture frames, electric tooth brushes, and so forth that people may place on the shelves 24, 26. In these embodiments, height adjustments also facilitate locating shelves 24, 26 within close proximity of electrical outlets or power strips that may be attached to power coupler 42. In alternate embodiments, shelves 24, 26 could have cutouts for pencil cups, hair appliances, hooks on the bottom, and the like.
[0070] FIG. 5 shows a perspective view of some potential uses for the multifunctional vanity 10. In this embodiment, sliding shelf 20 is used to store a laptop. In this
configuration, multifunctional vanity 10 can be used as a standing desk, if, for example, it is positioned at an appropriate height.
