Abstract
The present invention relates to an image display device having a broadcast genre-volume curve pairing function such that different audio parameters corresponding to different predefined volume curves are adapted based on the broadcasting type of a specific program content through an automatically generated pairing list. The present invention more particularly relates to an image display device receiving a plurality of broadcast program contents with audio signal contents from broadcasting service providers, the image display device comprising an electronic control unit performing broadcast program genre and volume curve pairing function so as to match alternative volume curves with a broadcast program content genre.
Description
The present invention relates to an image display device having a broadcast genre–volume curve pairing function such that different audio parameters corresponding to different predefined volume curves are adapted based on the broadcasting type of a specific program content through an automatically generated pairing list.
It is known that digital and interactive TV systems provide a comprehensive amount of TV channels and programs leading to the general outcome that a user may need to change default volume settings such as standard mode, movie, and sport modes in a dynamic manner. Assuming that a TV service may have hundreds of channels, which might take almost one hour before every single channel is viewed at least once, such a manual attempt would prove unmanageable in view of the vast number of channels.
It is to be noted that, the adjustment of the audio parameters of the image display device may be needed depending on personal viewing preferences of the user. Image display devices may be preconfigured to apply certain modes being presented to the user to increase perceived watching quality by enabling the user to select a volume mode preset. For instance, a user watching a TV channel broadcasting movies may adjust the volume mode of the image display device to the movie mode. However, other TV channels broadcasting different program contents leads to the general outcome that manual volume mode adjustment is necessary with each channel transition. Consequently, conventional methods for adjusting a TV channel’s volume corresponding to the personal viewing preferences of the user among a plurality of volume mode alternatives may become inefficient to the extent it is unperformable in a time-saving manner.
A prior art publication in the technical field of the present invention may be referred to as US2015043751, which discloses a television receiver and a volume curve adjusting method thereof. The volume curve adjusting method of the television receiver comprises the steps that a volume curve fitting method of the television receiver is determined to a Bezier curve fitting method; a volume curve indicates the corresponding relation between a volume input value and a volume output value, the volume input value is a volume logic value input by a user, and the volume output value is a logic value controlled by volume decibel and output by the television receiver; adjustment of a volume curve of the television receiver is performed according to the determined fitting method. When the volume curves are adjusted, the television receiver is adopted to improve adjusting efficiency of the volume curves, reduce station time in a volume curve adjusting step, and improve flexibility of volume curve adjustment.
The present invention provides a system and a method by which an image display device is operated such that a broadcast genre and volume curve pairing function is performed depending on the analysis of the incoming information relevant to the context of the broadcast content.
The present invention provides a system and method by which an image display device is operable to dynamically provide different volume curve modes as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is hence to provide an image display device performing a program genre and volume curve mode pairing function depending on the context of the displayed content. Therefore, by automatic selection of one of the available volume curve modes, the user will save the effort from adjusting individual parameters for sound control depending on the program or TV channel being watched.
The present invention proposes an image display device, an electronic control unit of which is configured to retrieve program content genre information from a broadcasting service provider on a program-specific basis so as to dynamically update the applicable volume curve with different power output settings, these in association with different user-selected sound level values.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a system and method by which an image display device, capable of performing program genre and volume curve mode pairing function, is operable, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief hereinafter.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in the claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
Fig. 1 demonstrates a general workflow diagram of the image display device TV program genre and volume curve mode pairing operation according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 demonstrates a general view of predefined exemplary volume curves variable depending on the broadcast program genre according to the present invention.
The present invention relates to an image display device such as for instance an LCD or LED TV, with at least one optionally built-in loudspeaker. The image display device is configured to dynamically adjust the output power of the loudspeakers according to the user-selected sound level in view of the genre of the broadcast program information received by the image display device. As human hearing follows a logarithmic curve from soft to loud, the present invention addresses this phenomenon so as to improve TV viewing experience of the users.
The present invention relates to an image display device having program genre and volume curve pairing function effectuating matching of alternative volume curves as demonstrated in Fig. 2 with specific program contents. The user can thereby activate the volume curve mode to apply certain sound settings to programs in an effort to enhance the audio quality and the perceived listening experience, and particularly to eliminate perceived sound level differences between channel transitions.
The settings menu interface may typically allow activation of pairing of the broadcast type with a certain volume curve. This is advantageous in that a certain volume curve is set automatically for a specific broadcasting genre such as movies, music program etc.
In the case of a broadcast genre assigned to a certain volume curve, the image display device automatically applies the predefined audio curve with the corresponding audio settings in the form of a power output value in association with a user-defined sound level value according to the specific curve, to the specific broadcasting genre being viewed on the screen.
It is known that digital broadcasting services provide information in regards to the genre of the programs being watched. This information is available to the users via the electronic program guide (EPG). The genre information may typically define a certain number of categories characterizing the content of a program. A content identifier therefore describes the contextual category of the digital program so as to let the users obtain information as to the classification of an event or a program.
In accordance with the invention, content identifiers in association with different programs as provided by the broadcaster can be used in order for determining the genre of a program. A plurality of programs is assigned to various program genres and the image display device retrieves the genre information in the form of a plurality of program genres indicative of the contextual character of a given program. This is especially advantageous if a given channel has no specific genre and broadcasts a multitude of broadcast program contents in different genres. Therefore, the image display device obtains the information as to the genre of the program and accordingly selects the appropriate volume curve for improved audio performance on a program-specific basis.
Parameter settings associated with a program-specific genre may be stored in an internal memory unit of the image display device. The database includes volume curves for every program genre to be automatically paired based on the program content being viewed. In the case that program genre information cannot be identified for a specific program content, a standard volume curve may be applied with corresponding parameters to the subject program content whose genre information was not retrieved.
An electronic control unit of the image display device thereby automatically performs volume curve adaptation based on the broadcast genre information being dynamically retrieved and updated by the image display device so as to readjust the volume curve on a program genre specific manner. The database of various volume curves as associated with respective program genres such as movie or sport programs is therefore accessed by the electronic control unit to apply respective parameter settings. The image display device matches the corresponding volume curve with the program genre of the watched program. For example, if the identified program genre is a sport program, the electronic control unit automatically readjusts the output power associated with the selected sound level according to the volume curve of sport mode.
Accordingly, the electronic control unit of the image display device reconfigures the previously applied volume curve mode parameters as these are no longer appropriate in view of the actual audio content, a new parameter set as provided is applied to the actual program content. In other words, instead of selecting the most appropriate parameter settings from among a plurality of existing presets on genre-specific basis, the electronic control unit can directly receive specially determined parameter settings in relation with the actual broadcast program content.
According to an alternative embodiment of the present invention, the image display device may dynamically retrieve the required audio mode parameters (Output power level for a certain user-selected sound level) from the broadcasters in the form of a machine readable code, such as barcode, two-dimensional or matrix code as in the case of Quick Response (QR) codes. The machine readable codes may be discontinuously displayed on the TV screen in a non-intrusive manner, i.e. interfering with the actual program content in a minimal level. The machine readable code will be displayed on the screen in a manner to be overlaid on the actual program or between consecutive frames so as to be replaced periodically as long as necessary, i.e. at times when readjustment of the display mode parameters is needed, that is for instance when the program content changes and a new volume curve is needed to be applied.
