Abstract
The present invention relates to an image display device capable of effecting automatic turn-off function in case an external source such as a computer is connected thereto but is not used for a certain time duration. The present invention relates more particularly to an image display device comprising a display unit, receiving a plurality of broadcasting services and being connectible with an external source of video and/or audio content to receive video and/or audio content from the external source, the image display device further comprising an electronic control unit effecting operation thereof.
Description
The present invention relates to an image display device capable of effecting automatic turn-off function in case an external source such as a computer is connected thereto but is not used for a certain time duration.
Digital and interactive TV systems provide a comprehensive amount of TV channels and programs. Additionally, a vast number of smart TV applications as well as accessed Internet sites may present the user with multimedia content. Externally, an image display device may receive video and audio signal from a plurality of sources such as a set-top box, digital multimedia player, game console etc.
It is to be noted that an external source of video and/or audio content connected to an image display device can remain in inactive state while an active signal communication is maintained between the image display device and the external source. For instance, a computer connected to the image display device, the latter being intended to be used as a larger screen display device, can remain inactive for an extended time duration, which will cause continuous power consumption although no user activity is present during this time duration.
Among others, one of the prior art disclosures in the technical field of the present invention can be referred to as CN202503594, which discloses an automatic digital television power controller, wherein the power plug of a set-top box is connected to the power panel of the set-top box through a power switch; a power cord between the power switch and the power panel is bypassed to a television socket; the power switch is connected in parallel to the normally open contact of the output end circuit of a relay; and the input end circuit of the relay receives a control signal input, thereby controlling the power switch. The controller obtains the decoded signal of the digital television and realizes synchronous turn-on and turn-off of the television and the set-top box by means of a pulsed electronic switch; once the sleep button of the remote controller of the set-top box is pressed down, the alternating-current power supply of the two devices is cut off; and simultaneously, when the cable television stations stop transmitting cable television signals, the pulsed electronic switch automatically cuts off the power supply of the set-top box and the television.
The present invention provides a system and a method by which an image display device is operated such that while it is connected to an external source of video and/or audio content, the received video and/or audio content is analyzed to determine whether any user activity actually takes place.
The present invention therefore provides a system and method by which an image display device is operable to analyze video and/or audio content received from an external source and to verify presence of change in the received content as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is to provide a system and method by which an image display device automatically verifies in the presence of an active signal connection an active and/or audio video content so that power supply to the display unit or loudspeakers is maintained while in the alternative case, if the image display device detects that no user activity takes place, it cuts power off to the display unit or loudspeakers.
The present invention proposes an image display device with a display unit which is selectively powered depending on the active or inactive status of an external source such as for instance an HDD unit. The image display device receiving video and/or audio content from the external source detects whether the external device is actually used. For instance, it might happen that a computer is connected to the image display device but it is left inactive for a certain time period. In this case, entering a sleep state during which low power mode is effective and the display unit is off, saves significantly on electrical consumption.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a system and method by which an image display device is operable, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief hereinafter.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in the claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
Fig. 1 demonstrates a general diagram according to which the image display device of the invention executes one of the methods of operation according to the present invention.
The present invention proposes an image display device which is operated in a selectively powered manner. More particularly, the present invention provides that an image display device connected to an external source of media content such as a personal computer, tablet computer or any other device through an appropriate connection cable such as for instance HDMI cable automatically determines whether the connected external device is actively used.
The image display device in accordance with the present invention is configured to analyze frames of a program or media content received from the external source by sampling and comparing consecutive images of the video content in equal time intervals so as to identify a visual change between two consecutive frames (digital images). Alternatively or additionally, the same comparison is made between consecutively sampled digital audio signals according to predetermined sampling intervals.
According to the invention, the change between two consecutively sampled data sets is taken as indicative of a specific user-originating or user-initiated activity in the sense that the external source of video and/audio signal is accepted to be actively used by the users. Image processing techniques, being used on an extensive basis for so many years and being readily available to the skilled worker, they need not be mentioned in the present description in detail. For instance, US2013091530 discloses a system used to test monitor multimedia content distribution network performance by acquiring a baseband video signal and performing a test operation involving determining if a video freeze event and/or an audio freeze event has occurred with respect to the baseband video signal.
The image display device trying to spot a visual change between consecutive image samples, it may detect that two consecutive frames or consecutively sampled digital audio signal samples as digital signals recorded at evenly spaced instants in time do not match each other. For instance, the image display device can compare the signals being sampled uniformly with a certain number of sampling intervals within each signal period T and can locate repeating sample patterns in each period in the case of a pure tone of frequency f Hz, which would generally imply an error condition.
In the above-mentioned cases, the image display device automatically deactivates the display unit and/or the loudspeakers so that active power consumption can be substantially reduced. The operational state initiated by the image display device automatically switching to the so-called sleep mode can be interrupted anytime by a user-triggered activity such as a movie playing or different audio signal sets as consecutively sampled by the image display device.
Therefore, according to the present invention, the image display device communicates with an external source of media such as a DVD player, game console, personal computer etc. to determine whether the external source is actively used.
Another situation which can be advantageously avoided according to the present invention is the case where the image display device receives broadcast signal from a broadcast service provider, for instance through a set-top box and the scrambled channels requiring a subscription from their provider are not descrambled. In this case, the respective informative dialogue being shown on the screen, the display unit of the mage display device remains powered. According to the invention, if no further action is taken by the user, the image display device can initiate low-power profile mode and cut power supply to the display unit.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the image display device initiates sleep mode by only analyzing frames of a program or media content received from the external source. A visual change detected between two consecutive frames sampled in equal time intervals is taken alone as an indication of the inactive state of the display unit. The loudspeakers may still be actively used in this situation. On the other hand, it is to be noted that the image display device may take a plurality of consecutive samples during a certain time period and a certain frequency to determine presence of the inactive state. For instance, frames of the video content can be sampled every one second for three minutes and only upon continuation of the unchanged state in the consecutive frames, can the image display device acknowledge the inactive state of the external source.
According to an alternative embodiment of the present invention, as shown in Fig. 1, the bit error rate (BER) of the demodulated and decoded RF signal of the received transport stream is measurable. This operation can be effected by the image display device itself or an external unit such as the set-top box. The BER value not meeting a predetermined criterion can be used as an indication to initiate sleep mode.
In summary, the present invention proposes an image display device comprising a display unit, receiving a plurality of broadcasting services and connectible with an external source of video and/or audio content to receive video and/or audio content from the external source, the image display device further comprising an electronic control unit effecting operation thereof.
In one embodiment of the invention, the electronic control unit of the image display device monitors connection status of the image display device with an external source of video and/or audio content and when the image display device is connected to an external source of video and/or audio content, the electronic control unit is configured to analyze frames of a video content received from the external source by sampling and comparing consecutive frames of the video content so as to identify a visual change between consecutive frames.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the display unit is operated in selectively powered manner such that the electronic control unit is further configured to automatically deactivate the display unit in the event that no change between analyzed consecutive frames is detected whereby active power consumption is substantially reduced in response to no activity in the external source of video and/or audio content connected to the image display device.
In a further embodiment of the invention, change between consecutively sampled frames of a video content is taken as indicative of an activity of the external source of video and/audio signal in response to which the display unit remains powered.
In a further embodiment of the invention, change between consecutively sampled digital audio signals according to predetermined sampling intervals is analyzed by the electronic control unit when the image display device is connected to an external source of video and/or audio content.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the electronic control unit is configured to automatically deactivate loudspeakers of the image display device if consecutively sampled digital audio signal samples do not match each other.
In a further embodiment of the invention, consecutive frames of the video content are sampled every one second for three minutes and upon continuation of the unchanged state in the consecutive frames, the image display device automatically deactivates the display unit.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the image display device is connected to the external source by means of a connection cable.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the external source connected to the image display device is a computer, tablet computer, HDD unit, a DVD player or a game console.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the operational state initiated by the image display device automatically switching to a low profile power mode is interrupted in case of an activity in the external source connected to the image display device.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the image display device automatically deactivates the display unit upon receiving an informative dialogue indicating that scrambled channels are not descrambled.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the bit error rate (BER) of the demodulated and decoded RF signal of a received transport stream is measured and in case of a BER value below a predetermined level, the image display device automatically deactivates the display unit.
In this regard, the present invention advantageously ensures that the image display device’s display unit or loudspeakers are automatically disconnected from the power source in response to an inactive state of an external source of video and/or audio content so as to initiate low-profile power mode, thereby substantially contributing to power saving during a time duration without user-originating activity in the external source.
