  • a motor home or travel trailer, and the like with a slide out room for the purpose of selectively expanding the interior space of the RV.
  • RV's typically are designed to accommodate such slide out rooms at the outset. Installation of such a slide out room into an existing RV not designed to accommodate the slide out room at the outset would involve substantial modification of the RV's structure, which modification might be neither practical nor cost effective. This may be especially true where the RV is based on a conventional panel van that is subject to relevant government crash and/or emissions certifications that might be voided in the wake of substantial modifications to the van's body structure, for example, creating a large aperture in the body structure configured to slidably receive the slide out room.

  • Mounting the motor 58 outboard of the column 56 in this manner may allow placement of either or both of the first and second gear racks 46, 48 nearer to the upper and lower ends of the slide out room 20 than if the motor were to be installed within the column. Such placement of the gear racks 46, 48 may provide structural and/or aesthetic benefits.
  • a second drive mechanism similar to the first drive mechanism 44 may be provided in association with the second sidewall 28 of the slide out room 20 in a similar manner.
  • Other embodiments could use other wall-mounted drive mechanisms or floor- mounted drive mechanisms.
  • the drive first drive mechanism 44 described above could be floor mounted with the first and second gear racks 46, 48 attached to an underside of the floor 22 of the slide out room 20 and the column 56 including the drive member 50 and the first and second gears 52, 54 attached to the sill 36 of the frame or directly to the floor of the vehicle 12 or an intervening bracket or component.
  • elongated drive screws could be incorporated into one or more of the walls, floor, or ceiling of the slide out room 20 or into structures joining the walls 26, 28, floor 22, and/or ceiling 24 of the slide out room.
  • the drive screws could be oriented in a manner similar to the first and second gear rack 46, 48.
  • the drive screws could be threadingly engaged with corresponding threaded drive blocks secured to the frame 34 so that rotation of a drive screw would result in translation of the drive screw (and, therefore, the wall, floor, ceiling, or other structure to which the drive screw is attached) through the frame 34, as discussed further below.
  • the drive screws could be driven by corresponding individual motors or a common motor.
  • the slide out room could be extended and retracted manually.
  • Such embodiments need not include a motor.
  • the assembly 10 may be configured for installation into a vehicle 12, for example, a commercial van such as a SPRINTER, without substantial modification to the vehicle.
  • the frame 34 may be configured for attachment to structural elements of the vehicle 12, either directly, or through one or more intervening brackets 62 or adapters.
  • the header 38 of the frame 34 may include mounting brackets configured to interface with reinforcing structures, for example, a reinforcing channel 66, inside the vehicle.
  • the sill 36 of the frame 34 may include mounting brackets (not shown) configured to interface with the floor of the vehicle 12 and/or associated reinforcing structures.
  • the frame 34 could be attached to the vehicle 12 using mechanical fasteners 64 or by welding. Installation using mechanical fasteners would facilitate removal of the assembly 10 from the vehicle 12 and restoration of the vehicle to its condition prior to installation of the assembly 10.
  • the assembly 10 would be installed into the vehicle 12 in association with a pre-existing door 18 of the vehicle, that is, a door provided by the vehicle's OEM.
  • the door 18 may be hinged door, a sliding door, a roll-up door or another form of door.
  • the door 18 may be located anywhere on the vehicle 12, for example, on a driver's side, a passenger side, or a rear of the vehicle.
  • the assembly 10, including the slide out room 20 may be contained completely within the vehicle.
  • the door 18 may be closed in a normal manner. With the door 18 closed, the outward appearance of the vehicle 12 need not exhibit any indication of the assembly 10 installed therein.
  • the door 18 In order to fully extend the slide-out room 20, the door 18 first would be opened. With the door 18 opened, the slide out room 20 may be fully extended through the frame 34 and out of the opened door 18 of the vehicle 12.
  • the room 20 could be extended by operating the motor 58 to rotate the torque shaft 50 and the first and second pinion gears 52, 54 disposed thereon, thereby driving the first and second gear racks 46, 48.
  • the extent to which the slide out room 20 may be extended through the frame 34 and the vehicle 12 may be limited by the depth of the slide out room and the length and placement of the gear racks 46, 48 on the sidewalls 26, 28 of the slide out room (or the configuration of an alternative drive mechanism) and the point of installation of the assembly 10 within the vehicle 12.
  • the room 20 could be retracted by operating the motor 58 in the reverse direction to achieve the reverse effect.
  • a shroud 68 may be provided to fill this gap.
  • the shroud 68 may extend between the frame 34 and portions of the vehicle proximate the opening. Such surface may be a wall, ceiling, and/or floor of the vehicle, or a sill, header, and or jamb of the opening.
  • the shroud 68 may be made of a flexible material, for example, a fabric, or a substantially rigid material, for example, plastic, fiberglass, or another suitable material.
  • the shroud 68 may be trimmed about its inner and outer peripheries with a flexible seal 70 configured to engage with respective portions of the frame 34 or vehicle 12.
  • the slide out room 20 With the slide out room 20 retracted and the door 18 closed, the door provides a seal between the interior and the exterior of the vehicle.
  • the slide out room 20 may include a peripheral flange 72 or lip extending radially outwardly from the inner ends of the floor 22, ceiling 24, and/or first and second sidewalls 26, 28 thereof.
  • a seal 74 may be attached to the frame 34 or otherwise provided between the slide out room 20 and the frame to effect a seal between the slide out room and the frame when the slide out room is fully extended. For example, as shown in Fig.
  • the seal 74 may include a mounting portion 76 attached to the header 38 of the frame 34, one or more wiper seals 78 engaged with the roof 24 of the slide out room 20 and configured to wipe moisture and/or debris from the surface of the roof as the slide out room extends and retracts, and a bulb seal 80 compressible between the mounting portion 76 and the lip 72 of the slide out room when the room is fully extended. Similar seals may be provided in connection with any or all of the other members (for example, the sill 36 and the first and second jambs 40, 42) of the frame and corresponding portions (for example, the floor and first and second sidewalls 26, 28) of the slide out room 20.
  • any of the foregoing seal members 74 may be omitted as desired.
  • the frame 34 may be installed sufficiently inboard of the door such that the seals 74 between the slide out room 20 and the frame 34 might not be needed or desired.
  • the lip 72 could be omitted from the slide out room 20.
  • the lip 72 may be retained in embodiments not using the seals 74 in order to mitigate against over-extension of the room and to provide an additional mechanical or structural connection between the frame 34 and the slide out room 20 when the slide out room is fully extended.

Abstract

L'invention concerne un ensemble formant cellule de type rallonge escamotable à des fins d'installation dans un véhicule à moteur, comprenant une cellule de type rallonge escamotable (20) ayant des première et deuxième parois latérales opposées (26) et un cadre (34) configuré pour recevoir de manière coulissante la cellule de type rallonge escamotable (20). Des crémaillères à engrenages supérieure et inférieure (46, 48) sont disposées sur chacune des première et deuxième parois latérales. Des premier et deuxième mécanismes d'entraînement comprenant des pignons supérieur et inférieur (52, 54) sont attachés à des premier et deuxième montants (40, 42) de la cellule de type rallonge escamotable. Les pignons supérieur et inférieur viennent se mettre en prise avec les crémaillères à engrenages supérieure et inférieure respectives. Le cadre peut être installé dans un véhicule à moteur adjacent à une porte (18) du véhicule de telle sorte que l'ensemble est entièrement contenu à l'intérieur d'une partie intérieure du véhicule et la porte peut être fermée quand la cellule de type rallonge escamotable est dans une position rétractée.
