Definitions
- the present invention relates to a removable step cover plate which is mounted to the driver and/or passenger door, and enables the steps to be hid by covering the steps on the chassis, and which can be removed from the door quickly in a practical way in heavy commercial vehicles.
- the cabin is designed as the living space of the driver in heavy commercial vehicles. During driving, many details are thought so that the driver has maximum safety and comfort.
- the engine is located on the chassis such that it will be below the driver cabin in heavy commercial vehicles. When the cabin is in normal position, the rear part of the cabin is supported with independent suspensions. Therefore, the road vibrations are also prevented from being transferred to the driver with this type of connection. Since the driver cabin is mounted on the chassis, access to the driver and the passenger cabin is enabled via steps, approximately with 2-4 steps. When the driver wants to get into the cabin, he gets into the cabin by using the steps on the chassis. At the same time, the cabin is required to be removed in order to access the engine during service. During service, the driver cabin should be lowered towards the front part (tilt) in order to access the engine. In order to tilt the cabin, the cabin is connected to the chassis from its front part.
- the steps used for accessing the cabin are desired to be mounted on the cabin. However during tilting the cabin, since the steps at the bottom will contact the front wheel, couple of steps at the bottom is connected to the chassis of the vehicle. In this case, couple of steps ant the bottom are located on the chassis, and the other steps are located on the cabin. Therefore, the steps are prevented from contacting or abutting the front wheel during moving the cabin forward or completely tilting.
- the steps connected to the cabin are closed for access from the outside by extending the door panel towards the ground such that it will cover the steps. Covering the steps shows effect of decreasing the air friction in terms of aerodynamic and enhances the fuel economy. In case the steps are not covered, the gap disrupts the regular flow of the air and increases the air friction, thereby causing more fuel consumption.
- Covering the steps prevents the dust, dirt from filling the steps.
- an area is created onto which the dust, dirt from the roads can hold especially roads that are not coated with asphalt.
- the dirt accumulated in this area is carried into the cabin while the driver is climbing to the vehicle, and it causes the vehicle to become dirty earlier.
- Covering the steps also prevents the access of malevolent people wanting to climb the vehicle.
- the steps are not covered, it is possible that unwanted people to travel on the vehicle by stepping on the lower steps of the vehicle that are open and by holding onto the mirror arms, door handles at traffic lights especially in areas with heavy traffic during driving.
- the steps on the cabin are covered by extending the door panel; however the steps on the chassis cannot be covered by extending the door towards the ground.
- the reason for this is same as not being able to connect the steps to the cabin; that is during forward opening of the cabin, any extension to be used mounted to the cabin will hit the wheels. Due to the said reason, the heavy commercial vehicle manufacturers leave the lower steps open, or they use several applications in order to cover the lower steps on the chassis.
- opening and closing of the steps is provided via a pneumatic structure.
- the steps on the chassis are in form of a two piece step mechanism which is opened and closed automatically with pneumatic pressure.
- the said embodiment it is automatically detected that the door is closed and one piece of the two piece step rotates and covers the step gap when the door is closed.
- a pneumatic, two piece step is used; when the door is closed, the half of the step is rotated 90° via the pistons and it covers the step gap.
- the most important technical problem of the said embodiment is that the step remains locked or open due to the pneumatic pressure. In such case, the step remains locked and it cannot be used.
- the said pneumatic step mechanism increase the vehicle cost and creates extra failure source on the vehicle.
- a cover is mounted to the chassis with hinge in order to cover the step gaps.
- the step gap is closed.
- the cover is connected to the door with a pin.
- the connection pin extending from the step cover plate towards the door enters through the connection slot located under the door, and it forms the bridge enabling to move together with the door.
- the connection slot through which the connection pin enters should be quiet wide, because the connection pin should go out of the slot easily during tilting of the cabin. At the same time, the connection pin should easily enter into the slot again when the cabin returns.
- the slot should be wide in all directions so that the connection pin can easily enter into the slot.
- the slot located under the door should be in a width such that the pin can enter and exit easily.
- using wide connection slot causes other technical problems.
- the step cover plate is subjected to intense vibration and it makes noise since it moves.
- the connection slot is wider than the connection pin, it moves within the slot and crashes occur.
- the movement or hitting of the connection pin inside the slot causes the connection pin to break, and to damage the main part hinged with bolts.
- the breaking of the connection pin, the damage of the part to which the pin is connected and the pin causing noise are the most common technical problems.
- step cover plate which covers the step gaps on the chassis, moves together with the door, which be removed whenever the driver wants, and which can be mounted and demounted practically and quickly.
- the objective of the present invention is to provide a removable step cover plate which enables to cover the steps that are used for the driver and passenger to access the cabin easily and located on the chassis and which is fixed to the door and which move together with the door.
- Another objective of the present invention is to provide a removable step cover plate which can easily be mounted and demounted without requiring any tools by a user.
- a further objective of the present invention is to provide a removable step cover plate which can be mounted and demounted while the door is open.
- a panel is mounted on the door, and the panel is locked on the door.
- One part of the panel fits on the door, while the other part of the panel extends downwards below the door. After the panel is locked on the door, it becomes integrated with the door. Therefore, the door moves together with the panel. From outside, the panel appears as part of the door extending downwards. The part of the panel extending downwards below the door covers the steps located on the chassis. Therefore, the steps on the chassis are covered and no one outside can use these steps. However, when the door is opened, the steps are uncovered and they can be used since the panel moves together with the door. When the vehicle cabin will tilt, the user unlocks the lock keeping the panel and the door together and separates the panel from the door. Therefore, the vehicle cabin can be tilted forward.
- Figure 1 is the schematic view of the removable step cover plate.
- Figure 2 is the mounted view of the removable step cover plate.
- a removable step cover plate (1) which is mounted on the driver and/or passenger door (K) on heavy commercial vehicles and enables the steps (B) to be hidden by covering the steps (B) on the chassis (S) and which can be removed practically and quickly from the door (K) when it is required, comprises
- At least one upper panel (3) which fits on the door (K), and which has preferably same size and form as the lower part of the door (K),
- At least one intermediate panel (4) which is located right under the upper panel (3) and which provides sliding in vertical axis relative to the upper panel (3), at least one lower panel (5) which is below the intermediate panel (4) and covers the steps (B) on the chassis (S),
- At least one lock (6) which is mounted inside or on the door (K) panel, and enables the upper panel (3) to be fixed to the door (K) by passing through the upper panel (3).
- the inventive removable step cover plate (1) is directly mounted on the vehicle door (K) and it moves together with the door (K).
- the removable step cover plate (1) is mounted on the inner surface of the door (K) panel, therefore it is only mounted or removed when the door (K) is open.
- the removable step cover plate (1) is directly mounted on the door (K) in heavy commercial vehicles. When the vehicle owners buy the vehicle, the removable step cover plate (1) is mounted on the door (K). When the user or the driver needs service or when the driver wants to tilt the cabin forward in any way, first they remove the removable step cover plate (1) and then move the cabin. The removable step cover plate (1) should be removed before tilting the cabin forward.
- the panel (2) mounted on the door (K) is preferably single piece, and it is comprised of three parts, namely upper panel (3), intermediate panel (4) and the lower panel (5). At the top part of the panel (2) there is an upper panel (3), and at the bottom there is a lower panel (5). There is also an intermediate panel (4) between the upper panel (3) and the lower panel (5).
- the intermediate panel (4) enables the lower panel (5) to slide as much as the door (K) wall thickness preferably relative to the upper panel (3).
- the lower panel (5) remains in alignment with the door (K) by means of the intermediate panel (4), and the lower panel (5) appears to be the continuance of the door from outside. By means of the sliding in vertical axis between the upper panel (3) and the lower panel (5), the panel (2) is fixed to the door (K) in a tight strong way.
- the upper panel (3) comprises at least one slot (31).
- the slot (31) is located on the upper panel (3) such that it will balance the center of gravity.
- the slot (31) has a space such that the lock (6) will pass through it.
- the upper panel (3) comprises at least two slots (31).
- the upper panel (3) comprises at least isolation layer (32).
- the isolation layer (32) functions as a vibration absorber between the door (K) and the panel (2), and prevents breaking and noise problems.
- the inventive removable step cover plate (1) comprises at least one lock (6).
- the lock (6) is preferably mounted on or inside the door (K) panel. After the lock (6) is mounted on the door (K), it remains fixed on the door (K).
- the holding tab can be in different forms such as rotating piece, clips, fitting tab.
- Two locks (6) are used in a preferred embodiment of the invention.
- the locking latch (61) passes through the slot (31) on the upper panel (3) and it is rotated over the upper panel (3).
- the locking latch (61) is rotated until preferably it becomes vertical to the slot (31), and it is enabled that the upper panel (3) is fixed to the door (K).
- the panel (2) is fixed to the door (K) through the upper panel (3) via the lock (6) and the locking latch (61). Since the lock (6) and the locking latch (61) completely fit into the upper panel (3) and the slot (31), the panel (2) is fixed to the door (K) in an immobile way. Therefore, the door (K) moves together with the panel (2).
- the panel (2) When the door (K) is closed, the panel (2) completely covers the steps (B) on the chassis (S) and the access to the steps (B) is prevented. Since the panel (2) moves together with the door (K) when the door (K) is opened, the steps on the chassis (S) are uncovered again, and access to the steps (B) is provided. Since the door (K), lock (6), locking latch (61), upper panel (3) fit on top of each other completely and there is no space between them, any vibration, or noise during driving does not come through the door (K) or the panel (2).
- the user opens the door (K) and rotates the locking latch (61) such that it will be parallel to the slot (31). After the locking latch (61) comes out of the slot (31), panel (2) leaves the door (K). After the user separates the panel (2) from the door (K), the cabin can be tilted forward as much as it is desired. There will be nothing to prevent the movement of the cabin.
- the movement of the locking latch (61) on the lock (6) is controlled with a key. By using the key which the driver or authorized person has, the locking latch (61) becomes movable, and the position of the locking latch (61) changes after it is unlocked with the key. The panel (2) cannot be removed or mounted without the key.
- the inventive removable step cover plate (1) is easily mounted on the vehicle door (K), and it is easily removed again when it is required.
- the driver, passenger or operator providing the service of the vehicle can easily remove and mount the panel (2).
- the door (K) should be open in order to remove the panel (2) from the door (K).
- the user makes the locking latch (61) parallel to the slot (31), and removes the panel (2) from the door (K) by pulling it.
- the user wants to fix the panel (2) to the door (K)
- first the locking latch (61) is made parallel to the slot (31) again. After the locking latch (61) comes upper surface of the upper panel (3), the locking latch (61) is rotated and it is preferably made vertical to the slot (31).
- the panel (2) is fixed on the door (K) via the locking latch (61).
