TECHNICAL FIELD
[0002] The invention relates generally to the field of media content play and in particular to a selectable media content system and method.
BACKGROUND
[0003] In recent years, an increased amount of video and audio content has been provided over the internet. For example, news companies have significantly increased the amount of news videos being provided on the internet. In order to watch these videos, typically a user needs to go through several pages of a news web site, select which video to watch and wait until the video loads and begins playing. This is very cumbersome and many times impractical.
[0004] U.S. patent application publication S/N US 2010/0275221, published
October 28, 2010 to DuVall et al., and entitled "USING MULTI MEDIA PLAYERS TO INSERT DATA ITEMS INTO A MEDIA STREAM OF A STREAMING MEDIA", the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference, is addressed to a method of playing advertisements within an online radio broadcast. The radio broadcast, comprising web tags distributed throughout, is played in a first media player. When the audio stream reaches a tag, the first media player mutes the radio broadcast and a second media player plays an advertisement. Unfortunately, this is only good for advertisements where the timing of the advertisement play is decided in advance and not responsive to any user selections. Additionally, no method is provided for seamlessly playing the advertisement as soon as the web tag is reached.

Communication module 80 of each user device 30 is arranged to be in communication with communication module 40 of server 20 via a network 85. In one embodiment, network 85 is a cellular network.
[00033] Memory 50 of server 20 has stored thereon a plurality of time elapsed content sets. The term 'time elapsed content' as used herein is meant to include any content which is played over a predetermined time period, the content changing over the predetermined time period, such as video content and audio content, in any of a plurality of media file formats. In one embodiment, each time elapsed content set comprises a lead item and an expanded item which is an expansion of the lead item. As such, the expanded item is longer than the lead item. For example, the lead item can be a short video describing a news story and the expanded item is a longer video including an interview or a journalist investigation expanding on the short description. In another embodiment, each time elapsed content set further comprises a summarized item, in addition to the lead and expanded items. The summarized item comprises a summary of the expanded item and as such is shorter than the associated expanded item. In another embodiment, a first subset of the plurality of time elapsed content sets each further comprises a summarized item whilst a second subset of the plurality of time elapsed content sets do not comprise summarized items. In one further embodiment, each summarized item is shorter than the associated lead item.
[00034] Processor 60 is arranged to transmit to user device 30, via communication module 40 and communication module 80, the lead item of each of the plurality of time elapsed content sets. In one embodiment, only the lead items of the plurality of time elapsed content sets are downloaded. In another embodiment, one or more of the expanded items are also downloaded. In one further embodiment, user preferences associated with the user of user device 30 are stored on memory 50 of server 20 and some, or all, of the expanded items are downloaded responsive to the stored user preferences. For example, server 20 is arranged to download to user device 30 expanded items related to a subject which the user usually watches, or listens to. In the embodiment where there are time elapsed content sets which comprise summarized items, optionally the summarized items are downloaded with the associated lead items. The downloaded lead items, and optionally downloaded expanded items and summarized items are stored on memory 90.
[00035] In another embodiment, as will be described below, the lead item of a first time elapsed content set is downloaded. In such an embodiment, the expanded item of the first time elapsed content set and a lead item of a second time elapsed content set are downloaded while the lead item of the first time elapsed content set is being played.
[00036] Responsive to a user gesture at user input module 75, such as a touch on a touch screen, processor 100 is arranged to play the downloaded lead item of a first of the plurality of time elapsed content sets at content output module 70. In one embodiment, responsive to the lead item being played, processor 100 is arranged to transmit a signal to server 20, via communication module 80 and communication module 40, notifying server 20 that the lead item is being played. Responsive to the received signal, the associated expanded item and optional summarized item are downloaded to user device 30 via communication module 40 and communication module 80. In another embodiment, the expanded item is downloaded later, as will be described below.
[00037] Processor 100 is further arranged to display at content output module 70, for a predetermined time period of the played lead item, a visual marker. In one embodiment, the predetermined time period is less than the time period of the played lead item, i.e. less than the playing time of the played lead item. In one embodiment, the visual marker is displayed from the beginning of the played lead item until a point before the end thereof. In another embodiment, the visual marker is stored on memory 90 and processor 100 is arranged to display the visual marker such that it is overlaid on the displayed frames of the played lead item. In the event that the played lead item comprises only audio content, the audio content is output from the audio speaker of content output module 70 and the visual marker is displayed on the display thereof. The displayed visual marker is arranged to be selected responsive to a user gesture at user input module 75. In one embodiment, the displayed visual marker is selected by touching a touch screen at a point corresponding with the displayed visual marker.
[00038] In a first embodiment, responsive to the user gesture at user input module
75 received during the predetermined time period when the visual marker is displayed, processor 100 is arranged to play at content output module 70, upon completion of the played lead item, the downloaded lead item of a second of the plurality of time elapsed content sets. Particularly, when the first lead item finishes playing, the second lead item is played. In one embodiment, the second lead item is played immediately after the first lead item finishes playing. In the absence of a user gesture received during the predetermined time period when the visual marker is displayed, processor 100 is arranged to play at content output module 70, upon completion of the played lead item, the downloaded expanded item associated with the played lead item. In one embodiment, the expanded item is played immediately after the first lead item finishes playing. After the downloaded expanded item is played, processor 100 is arranged to play at content output module 70 the downloaded lead item of the second of the plurality of time elapsed content sets. Thus, in the event where each of the downloaded lead items is a short introductory video describing a news story, the user will watch each news story and tap the visual marker so that the next short video will play upon completion of the current one. If the user wishes to watch the expanded news story, the visual marker is not tapped and the expanded story is played upon completion of the short story.
[00039] In a second embodiment, responsive to the user gesture at user input module 75 received during the predetermined time period when the visual marker is displayed, processor 100 is arranged to play at content output module 70, upon completion of the played lead item, the downloaded expanded item associated with the played lead item. In one embodiment, the expanded item is played immediately after the first lead item finishes playing. After the downloaded expanded item is played, processor 100 is arranged to play at content output module 70 the downloaded lead item of the second of the plurality of time elapsed content sets. In the absence of a user gesture received during the predetermined time period when the visual marker is displayed, processor 100 is arranged to play at content output module 70, upon completion of the played lead item, the downloaded lead item of a second of the plurality of time elapsed content sets. Particularly, when the first lead item finishes playing, the second lead item is played. In one embodiment, the second lead item is played immediately after the first lead item finishes playing. Thus, in the event where each of the downloaded lead items is a short introductory video describing a news story, the user will watch each news story and tap the visual marker in order to watch the expanded news story. If the user does not wish to watch the expanded news story, the visual marker is not tapped and the next short video will play upon completion of the current one.
[00040] In one embodiment, the expanded item is downloaded only in response to the user gesture being received during the predetermined time period when the visual marker is displayed. In another embodiment, the expanded item associated with the played lead item begins to download when the lead item begins to play and the download is completed only if the user gesture is received during the predetermined time period when the visual marker is displayed.
[00041] In a third embodiment, responsive to the user gesture at user input module 75 received during the predetermined time period when the visual marker is displayed, processor 100 is arranged to play at content output module 70, upon completion of the played lead item, the downloaded expanded item associated with the played lead item. In one embodiment, the expanded item is played immediately after the first lead item finishes playing. After the downloaded expanded item is played, processor 100 is arranged to play at content output module 70 the downloaded summarized item associated with the played lead item and expanded item. After the summarized item is played, processor 100 is arranged to play at content output module 70 the downloaded lead item of the second of the plurality of time elapsed content sets.
[00042] In the absence of a user gesture received during the predetermined time period when the visual marker is displayed, processor 100 is arranged to play at content output module 70, upon completion of the played lead item, the summarized item associated with the played lead item. In one embodiment, the summarized item is played immediately after the first lead item finishes playing. After the summarized item is played, processor 100 is arranged to play at content output module 70 the downloaded lead item of a second of the plurality of time elapsed content sets. Particularly, when the first summarized item finishes playing, the second lead item is played. Thus, in the event where each of the downloaded lead items is a short introductory video describing a news story, the user will watch each news story and tap the visual marker in order to watch the expanded news story followed by a summarized version of the news story. If the user does not wish to watch the expanded news story, the visual marker is not tapped and the summarized version of the news story is played upon completion of the short introductory version, and the short introductory video of the next news item will play upon completion of the current summarized version.
[00043] In one embodiment, the expanded item and/or the summarized item is downloaded only in response to the user gesture being received during the predetermined time period when the visual marker is displayed. In another embodiment, the expanded item and/or the summarized item, associated with the played lead item, begins to download when the lead item begins to play and the download is completed only if the user gesture is received during the predetermined time period when the visual marker is displayed. [00044] In a fourth embodiment, responsive to the user gesture at user input module 75 received during the predetermined time period when the visual marker is displayed, processor 100 is arranged to play at content output module 70, upon completion of the played lead item, the summarized item associated with the played lead item.
[00045] In the absence of a user gesture received during the predetermined time period when the visual marker is displayed, processor 100 is arranged to play at content output module 70, upon completion of the played lead item, the downloaded expanded item associated with the played lead item. Thus, in the event where each of the downloaded lead items is a short introductory video describing a news story, the user will watch each news story and tap the visual marker in order to continue with a summarized version of the news story and then the next news story. If the user wishes to watch the expanded news story, the visual marker is not tapped and the expanded version of the news story, followed by the summarized version of the news story is played upon completion of the short introductory version. The short introductory video of the next news story will play upon completion of the current summarized version.
[00046] In one embodiment, the expanded item is downloaded only in response to the user gesture being received during the predetermined time period when the visual marker is displayed. In another embodiment, the expanded item associated with the played item begins to download when the lead item begins to play and the download is completed only if the user gesture is received during the predetermined time period when the visual marker is displayed. [00047] Optionally, the above described four embodiments may be combined such that server 20 and user device 30 allow users to choose which embodiment they wish to activate.
[00048] In the embodiment where a plurality of lead items are stored on memory 90, server 20 is arranged to periodically update the lead items which were downloaded to user device 30, responsive to an update event. In one embodiment, the update event is stored on memory 50. In another embodiment, the update event is received from an external server, such as a news provider. In one embodiment, as described above, user device 30 notifies server 20 that a lead item has been played. Responsive to the received notification, server 20 does not update the played lead item at least for a predetermined time period. Since the lead item has already been watched, an update is unnecessary since the user won't see it again.
[00049] In a fifth embodiment, processor 100 is arranged to control a plurality of media players to play content at content output module 70, as will be described herein. In one non-limiting embodiment, wherein processor 100 runs an Android based operating system, ExoPlayer media players are run by processor 100 to play content at content output module 70. Processor 100 is arranged to control a first media player to play a lead item of a first time elapsed content set responsive to a user gesture at user input module 75, such as the user opening an App or selecting a channel or subject to be watched. As described above, in one embodiment the lead items of a plurality of time elapsed content sets are stored on memory 90. In another embodiment, the lead item of the first time elapsed content set begins downloading from server 30 responsive to the user gesture at user input module 75. In one embodiment, as described above, processor 100 is arranged to display at content output module 70 a visual marker while the lead item of the first time elapsed content set is being played.
[00050] While the lead item of the first time elapsed content set is being played by the first media player, the expanded item of the first time elapsed content set is prepared by a second media player. Particularly, preparing the expanded item by the second media player comprises retrieving the expanded item and achieving a ready for playback state for the retrieved expanded item, i.e. that the second media player is ready to play the retrieved expanded item, as known to those skilled in the art at the time of the invention. In one embodiment, wherein the expanded item of the first time elapsed content set is previously stored on memory 90, the second media player retrieves the expanded item from memory 90. In another embodiment, wherein the expanded item of the first time elapsed content set has not been previously downloaded, the second media player is arranged to download the expanded item from server 20, via communication module 80. In one embodiment, only a portion of the expanded item is downloaded and the remainder of the expanded item is downloaded when the expanded item is being played. Processor 100 is further arranged, while the first media player is playing the lead item of the first time elapsed content set, to control a third media player to prepare for play the lead item of a second time elapsed content set, i.e. retrieve from memory 90 or server 20 and achieve a ready for playback state such that the third media player is ready to play the retrieved lead item.
[00051] In one embodiment, responsive to the pre-defined user gesture at user input module 75, such as a swipe or a tap on a touch screen, optionally where the visual marker is displayed, processor 100 is arranged to control the second media player to play the expanded item of the first time elapsed content set at content output module 70. Preferably, the second media player is arranged to play the expanded item of the first time elapsed content set only after the first media player has finished playing the lead item of the first time elapsed content set.
[00052] In the absence of the pre-defined user gesture at user input module 75 while the lead item of the first time elapsed content set is being played, optionally in the absence of the user gesture while the visual marker is being displayed, processor 100 is arranged to control the third media player to play at content output module 70 the lead item of the second time elapsed content set. While the lead item of the second time elapsed content set is being played by the third media player, processor 100 is arranged to: control one of the other media players to prepare the expanded item of the second time elapsed content set for play; control another of the other media players to prepare the lead item of a third time elapsed content set for play; and optionally display the visual marker at content output module 70.
[00053] It is noted that the 'absence of the user gesture' is not meant to exclude other user gestures. Particularly, in one embodiment, the detection of a first user gesture, such as a swipe, causes the second media player to play the expanded item and the detection of a second user gesture, such as a tap, instead of the first user gesture, i.e. responsive to the presence of the second user gesture and the absence of the first user gesture, causes the third media player to play the second lead item upon completion of the playing of the lead item. [00054] In an alternate embodiment, responsive to a pre-defined user gesture received while the first media player is playing the lead item of the first time elapsed content set, processor 100 is arranged to control the third media player to play the lead item of the second time elapsed content set at content output module 70, optionally after the first media player finishes playing the lead item of the first time elapsed content set. In the absence of a user gesture while the first media player is playing the lead item of the first time elapsed content set, processor 100 is arranged to control the second media player to play the expanded item of the first time elapsed content set at content output module 70 when the first media player finishes playing the lead item. As described above, the 'absence of the user gesture' is not meant to exclude other user gestures replacing the pre-defined user gesture.
[00055] The above has been described in an embodiment where the lead item of the first time elapsed content set is played by the first media player and the lead item of the second time elapsed content set is played by the third media player, however this is not meant to be limiting in any way. In another embodiment, the lead items of a plurality of time elapsed content sets are provided in a single media file and the first media player is arranged to play the lead items of both the first and second time elapsed content sets. Particularly, as described above, in one embodiment the second media player is arranged to play the expanded item of the first time elapsed content set responsive to a user gesture at user input module 75 while the first media player is playing the lead item of the first time elapsed content set. Therefore, in the absence of the user gesture while the lead item is being played, the first media player is arranged, when finishing playing the lead item of the first time elapsed content set, to play the lead item of the second time elapsed content set. In another embodiment, as described above, the second media player is arranged to play the expanded item of the first time elapsed content set in the absence of a user gesture at user input module 75 while the first media player is playing the lead item of the first time elapsed content set. Therefore, responsive to the user gesture while the lead item is being played, the first media player is arranged, optionally when finishing playing the lead item of the first time elapsed content set, to play the lead item of the second time elapsed content set.
[00056] The above embodiment is not intended to limit the method of playing lead items which are located in a single media file. In another embodiment, while the first media player is playing the lead item of the first time elapsed content set and the second media player is preparing the expanded item of the first time elapsed content set for playback, processor 100 is arranged to control the third media player to prepare the lead item of the second time elapsed content set which is in the same media file as the lead item of the first time elapsed content set.
[00057] Similarly, in another embodiment, each time elapsed content set is provided in a single media file. Thus, when the first media player is playing the lead item of the first time elapsed content set, processor 100 is arranged to control the second media player to prepare for playback the second time elapsed content set.
[00058] Although the above has been described in relation to time elapsed content sets comprising a lead item and an expanded item, this is not meant to be limiting in any way. Particularly, the above system can be used for playing any of a variety of time elapsed content items such that when a first time elapsed content item is being played by a first media player a second time elapsed content item is being prepared by a second media player, and optionally a third time elapsed content item is being played by a third media player. Advantageously, a first item can be played while other items are being prepared to be played responsive to a user input.
[00059] Although the above embodiment has been described in relation to time elapsed content items, this is not meant to be limiting in any way, and the above system can be utilized for displaying any media types, such as text and illustrations.
[00060] In a sixth embodiment, processor 100 is arranged to control a plurality of media players to play content at content output module 70, as will be described herein.
[00061] While the lead item of the first time elapsed content set is being played by the first media player, the lead item of a second time elapsed content set is prepared by a second media player. Particularly, preparing the second lead item by the second media player comprises retrieving the second lead item and achieving a ready for playback state for the retrieved lead item, i.e. that the second media player is ready to play the retrieved lead item, as known to those skilled in the art at the time of the invention. In one embodiment, wherein the lead item of the second time elapsed content set is previously stored on memory 90, the second media player retrieves the second lead item from memory 90. In another embodiment, wherein the lead item of the second time elapsed content set has not been previously downloaded, the second media player is arranged to download the expanded item from server 20, via communication module 80. In one embodiment, only a portion of the lead item is downloaded and the remainder of the lead item is downloaded when the lead item is being played.
[00062] Responsive to a pre-defined user gesture at user input module 75, such as a swipe or a tap on a touch screen, optionally where the visual marker is displayed, processor 100 is arranged to control the second media player to play the lead item of the second time elapsed content set at content output module 70 as soon as the ready for playback state is achieved, although in one embodiment the second lead item may be played after a short predetermined delay period. Further optionally, processor 100 is arranged to display the visual marker described above only after the second media player indicates that it has achieved the ready for playback state.
[00063] In the absence of the pre-defined user gesture at user input module 75 while the lead item of the first time elapsed content set is being played, optionally in the absence of the pre-defined user gesture while the visual marker is being displayed, processor 100 is arranged to control the second media player to play the lead item of the second time elapsed content set only after the first media player has finished playing the lead item of the first time elapsed content set. Thus, a user is provided with a list of lead items, optionally news headlines, and the user can at any point skip to the next headline which has already been prepared by the second media player or watch the entire headline and then watch the next headline which was prepared by the second media player.
[00064] Although the above embodiment has been described such that the second lead item is played immediately responsive to a user gesture and played after completion of the lead item responsive to the absence of the user gesture, this is not meant to be limiting to an absence of any user gesture. Rather, the user gesture is considered to be absent when a particular type of user gesture is absent. For example, the pre-defined user gesture is a swipe on a screen. In the absence of the swipe, the second lead item is played by the second media player upon completion of the lead item at the first media player, however this does not exclude other user gestures. In one embodiment, responsive to a swipe the second lead item is immediately played and responsive to a tap instead of a swipe, i.e. the presence of a tap and the absence of a swipe, the second lead item is played upon completion of the lead item.
[00065] Although the above embodiment has been described in relation to time elapsed content set comprising a lead item and an expanded item, this is not meant to be limiting in any way. Particularly, the above system can be used for playing any of a variety of time elapsed content items such that when a first time elapsed content item is being played by a first media player a second time elapsed content item is being prepared by a second media player.
[00066] Although the above has been described in relation to time elapsed content items, this is not meant to be limiting in any way, and the above system can be utilized for displaying any media types, such as text and illustrations.
[00067] The term 'download' as used herein is meant to include any method of data transmission for media content over a network, such as the internet, particularly including progressive download and various streaming protocols.
