Description
Rotary cutting device, particularly for cutting tobacco
The present invention relates to a rotary cutting device, particularly for cutting tobacco. More specifically, the invention proposes a rotary cutting device of the type comprising: a bearing structure which is stationary in operation,
a shaft supported in this structure so as to be rotatable about an axis,
a cutting assembly mounted around said shaft and rotatable therewith, and including a plurality of peripheral longitudinal blades, designed to penetrate a block of tobacco fed towards the cutting assembly; and
drive means coupled to one end of said shaft and capable of causing the shaft to rotate about said axis.
Rotary cutting devices of this type are known, for example, from European patent applications EP 0 293 384 Bl and EP 0 584 524 Bl in the name of the present applicant.
In rotary cutting devices of the aforementioned type made up to the present time, the drive means coupled to the shaft typically comprise a pulley which is coupled via a transmission belt to the rotor of an electric motor, positioned transversely offset and substantially parallel to said shaft.
This solution is relatively complicated, requiring a variety of components, and is rather cumbersome. One object of the present invention is to provide a rotary cutting device which can overcome the aforementioned drawbacks of the prior art devices.
These and other objects are achieved according to the invention with a rotary cutting device of the type specified above, characterized in that the drive means comprise a slip ring motor, including an outer stator, fixed to said bearing structure and an annular inner rotor, fixed coaxially to an end of the aforesaid shaft.
Conveniently, this slip ring motor is a multi-phase asynchronous torque motor.
The device according to the invention is structurally simpler and considerably less cumbersome than the prior art devices. Furthermore, it is much less noisy in operation.
Further characteristics and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following detailed description, provided purely by way of non-limiting example, with reference to the attached drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in axial section of a rotary cutting device according to the present invention; and
Figure 2 is a partial view which shows, on an enlarged scale, part of the device illustrated in Figure 1.
In Figure 1 , the number 1 indicates the whole of a rotary cutting device according to the invention, particularly for cutting tobacco. This device 1 comprises a bearing structure 2 which is stationary in operation.
The device 1 further comprises a shaft, indicated as a whole by 3, supported rotatably about an axis A-A, which is preferably horizontal.
In the illustrated exemplary embodiment, the shaft 3 comprises an intermediate cylindrical body 3a and two end heads 3b and 3c rotatable in respective bearing supports 4, 5 mounted in the bearing structure 2. The device 1 further comprises a cutting assembly indicated as a whole by 6, mounted around the intermediate body 3a of the shaft 3, and rotatable therewith about the axis A-A.
In a known way, the cutting assembly 6 includes a plurality of peripheral longitudinal blades 7, designed to penetrate a block of tobacco fed towards the cutting assembly 6 through an opening 8 formed in the bearing structure 2.
In the illustrated exemplary embodiment (see, in particular, Figure 2), at the end or head 3b
of the shaft 3 there is fixed a hub 9, forming a shaped transverse flange 10 which projects radially and is fixed directly to the rotor 1 1 of a slip ring motor indicated as a whole by 12.
The electric motor 12 further comprises an outer stator 13, made from a stack of plates and equipped with windings 14. This stator is fixed to the bearing structure 2.
The rotor 1 1 of the slip ring motor 12 also has an annular configuration, and extends around the hub 9 fixed to the end 3 b of the shaft 3. Conveniently, the electric motor 12 is what is known as an AC "torque motor" of the multi-phase asynchronous type.
A shaped, essentially disc-like, cover 15 encloses the end of the motor 12 which faces in the opposite direction to the cutting assembly 6.
The solution according to the present invention can also be implemented in pre-existing cutting devices, by installing a slip ring motor such as that shown in the drawings, in place of the pulley round which runs the transmission belt coupling the shaft of the cutting assembly to an electric driving motor.
The rotary cutting device according to the present invention has a very simple configuration, considerably reduced overall dimensions, and simpler maintenance, since there is no need for the periodic replacement of a transmission belt. It also has a very low operating noise level.
Clearly, provided that the principle of the invention is retained, the forms of application and the details of construction can be varied widely from what has been described and illustrated purely by way of non-limiting example, without thereby departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the attached claims.
