Description

DESCRIPTION
A SMART CARD SYSTEM Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a centralized smart card system which can operate online/offline through the Internet, can integrate with external automation, payment, and authorization systems in real time.
Background of the Invention
In the applications known in the state of the art, separate systems are used for payment, gate passage systems, scholarship, and other situations. However, difficulties are experienced in payment systems since the said systems are not integrated to the real time payment systems. Therefore, separate payment/loading points are created for these systems. This approach both ends up with high cost and makes the users dependent to these points and prevents real time transactions by holding the payment transactions on the card.
A similar case is also experienced when defining special features to the cards. For example, when a student of the university is granted a scholarship, this feature should be specifically defined for that card. Furthermore, since authorization process is not central, the system loads the authorization on the reader and the reader gives passage permissions according to the list present therein. However, since an update is not performed in real time, the lists are uploaded to the readers in certain times. This causes both security flaws and operational delays.
With all these aspects, invalidation of the card in case the card is lost or the expiration of the card cannot be performed in real time. The Problems Solved with the Invention
The objective of the present invention is to provide a centralized smart card system which can operate online/offline through the Internet, can integrate with external automation, payment, and authorization systems in real time.
The inventive smart card system communicates in real time with the external units (for example a bank or a system which is not a bank but has the same function with the bank). For this, SSL- or VPN-based connection is established with the payment system through web services, private secured connection, or the Internet. The system receives the payment status in real time from a bank or a system having the same function as the bank and stores in a database, and updates the payment status according to user transactions. If the user deposits money, this transaction is immediately reflected to the system, and the amount is deducted from the account when payment is completed. Similarly, when there a problem is encountered during the payment operation, credit is defined to the user in order to provide transaction continuity.
The inventive smart card system does not require its users (students, academicians, and personnel) to have an account in any bank. This feature allows most students graduated from high school without a bank account to use this system. Furthermore, an unlawful behavior of a university forcing all of its students to have an account in the bank is avoided (because the client number of the said bank is increased by tens of thousands immediately and this creates unfair competition).
Authorization of the card and defining special transaction is also performed in the database present in the central system. By this means, defining authorization or a special status such as scholarship for the user is performed centrally and independent from the card, and thus the card is updated in the system without requiring any extra effort of the card user. The termination of the card or invalidation of its authorization is similarly performed in the central database, and this process is also enabled to be performed in real time.
The records in the database are updated with a web-based or application-based software in the central system, and thus the system users are enabled to update any information quickly through the Internet or network, or receive real time reports.
Detailed Description of the Invention
A smart card system developed to fulfill the objective of the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying figure, in which
Figure 1 is the schematic view of the smart card system
The components shown in the figure are each given reference numbers as follows: 1. Smart card system
2. Card printer
3. Card reader
3.1. Data receiving/transmitting unit
3.2. Memory unit
4. Financial system
5. Payment/authorization system
6. Database
The inventive smart card system (1) mainly comprises:
at least one card printer (2) which enables printing the smart cards defined for the users, at least one smart card reader (3) which can operate online/offline, and which enables the smart cards defining specific authorizations to the user to be read in order to give payment and/or passage permission,
at least one data receiving/transmitting unit (3.1) which provides the cable/wireless data communication for the card reader (3),
at least one memory unit (3.2) wherein the list of users to which special authorization is defined is stored,
at least one financial system which verifies the validity of the payment transactions,
- at least one payment/authorization system (5) which is adapted to define specific authorizations to the users, give approval to the users for payment and passage transactions, and remotely update the memory units (3.2) of the card readers (3),
at least one database (6) wherein the user information and the specific authorizations defined to the users are recorded.
In a preferred embodiment of the inventive smart card system (1), new user records created by authorized persons in an authorized service provider or by the user through the Internet are transmitted to the payment/authorization system (5). The said new user information that are transmitted are recorded in the database (6) via web-based or program-based softwares by the payment/authorization system (5), and transmits a card printing instruction with information such as name, surname registration number of the user to the card printer (2). The card printer (2) prints the smarts card in accordance with the information coming to it. Then, the user information in the database (6) are matched with the card number of the printed card by the payment/authorization system (5), and the said smart card is finally defined for the user.
In the inventive smart card system (1), there are several card readers (3) distributed to many payment and passage points in order to read the printed cards. The said card readers (3) perform data communication with the payment/authorization system (5) and/or a financial system (4) via a data receiving/transmitting unit (3.1) located on the said card readers (3) with cable or wireless. The said financial system (4) can be a bank or a system that has the same function as the bank.
In one embodiment of the invention, the said data receiving/transmitting unit (3.1) can be a Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, SIM Card module, 3G, 4G, Ethernet or a similar unit.
The payment/authorization system (5) communicates with the card readers (3) through the said data receiving/transmitting unit (3.1) in order to give specific authorization (for example scholarship, gate passage permission...) to the users, and it can update the memory unit (3.2) provided inside the said card readers (3). For this, location of each card reader (3) can be viewed on a digital map in a device by the payment/authorization system (5), and the list comprising passage and payment permissions present in memory unit (3.2) on each card reader (3) can be updated altogether or they can be updated individually.
In order to make a payment by using smart card transferred to the user, the said smart card is presented to a card reader (3). This transaction is transferred to the financial system (4) through the payment/authorization system (5) or directly to the financial system (4). When the payment is verified, these payments are transferred to the payment/authorization system (5) in real time by the financial system (4) in a secure medium (by using web service, SSL-based connection or VPN-based connection or password connection). The payment/authorization system (5) verifies the related payment transaction and updates the payment status in the user account in the database (6) when required, gives credit or gives permission based on authorization. These updates that are made and the authorizations that are given are transmitted to the card readers (3), and the card reader (3) gives payment or passage permission to the user in accordance with these updates and authorizations. In one embodiment of the invention, specific authorizations such as scholarship or passage permission from a special gate can be defined to the smart cards by the payment/authorization system (5), and the defined information can be recorded in the database (6). The payment/authorization system (5) transmits this to the card readers (3) or a specific card reader (3) according to the characteristic of the said authorization, and it either permits the user or changes the payment status. In this case, a transaction is not made in the card reader (3) or the smart card; the payment/authorization system (5) completes these transactions internally. Thus, the said smart cards are transformed into a multipurpose smart card having features such as a bank card, credit card, passage card, scholarship card, etc.
In one embodiment of the invention, if the card reader (3) cannot access the payment/authorization system (5), it can give credit or passage permission offline according to the predetermined permissions for the user and stored in memory unit (3.2) of the said card reader (3). Then, when access is enabled, the stored transactions are transmitted to the payment/authorization system (5) altogether. If offline transaction permission is not given to the card reader (3) by the payment/authorization system (5), permission is not given to the user. In an embodiment of the invention, in case the smart card is lost or there is a technical problem, the said smart card is cancelled by the payment/authorization system (5), card printing instruction is transmitted to the card printer (2) together with information such as name, surname, registration number stored in the database (6) in order to define new card for the user, and the user records are matched again with the printed card. The cancelled card number is transmitted to the card readers (3) in order to be stored in the memory units (3). Thus, unauthorized use of the card is prevented.
In one embodiment of the invention, the users of the smart card system (1) are enabled to update their own information or receive real time reports through an application installed in a smart device such as a phone, tablet PC or through the Internet by using a device such as desktop, laptop, tablet PC.
