Description
Degassing pump
The present invention relates to a pump for dosing a liquid, i.e. a substance which is typically in this state of matter at ambient pressure and temperature conditions.
More particularly, this pump comprises:
- a hollow body delimiting an inner chamber into which an inlet conduit of the liquid opens and from whose lower portion an outlet conduit departs, and
- a piston having a stem and a head slidable within said outlet conduit.
To enable a pump of the aforesaid type to dose the liquid correctly, it is important to ensure that the liquid is free of dissolved gases.
For this purpose, the prior art provides for the installation, upstream of the pump, of a storage reservoir which is kept under vacuum, in order to promote the exit of any dissolved gases from the liquid phase. However, this plant-design solution is rather complex and expensive.
US 4 523 903 A describes a dosing pump with a piston, in the cylinder of which the vacuum is avoided, and from which the dosed liquid comes out with a transverse direction of flow relative to the vertical axis of the piston. The latter is also connected to a diaphragm, which in turn is fastened to the walls of a pre-dosing chamber, which is thus divided into two separate volumes.
US 5 819 544 A describes a pumping system for filling cylinders with evaporated, pressurized cryogenic liquid, particularly oxygen. This system is provided with a vacuum pump for the complete evacuation of the cryogenic fluid present and any necessary purging. Consequently, the vacuum pump cannot operate during the normal operation of the cryogenic liquid pumping system.
An object of the present invention is therefore to overcome the aforesaid drawbacks of the known art.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by means of a pump having the features indicated at the beginning of the present description and characterized in that it also includes a device for sucking from the aforesaid inner chamber, during the operation of the pump, gases and vapours which are released from the liquid.
As a whole, the pump of the present invention performs not only its specific function of pumping and dosing the liquid, but also the function of degassing the liquid, with the advantage of making it unnecessary to have a further apparatus such as an intermediate reservoir intended specifically for the performance of this operation.
A further subject of the present invention is a method for dosing a liquid using the aforesaid pump, wherein said device sucks from the inner chamber, during the operation of the pump, gases and vapours which are released from the liquid.
Other advantages and features of the present invention will become clear from the following detailed description which is given by way of non-limiting example with reference to the attached drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic representation of a pump of the invention,
Figure 2 is a view in vertical section of the body of the pump of the invention, and
Figure 3 is a representation on an enlarged scale of a detail of Figure 2.
In Figure 1 , the reference number 10 indicates the whole of a pump for dosing a liquid 12, this pump (Fig. 2) being provided with a substantially cylindrical body 14 with a circular cross section and a vertical central axis 16.
The body 10 is hollow, and delimits within itself a chamber 18 into which an inlet conduit 20 of the liquid 12 opens and from whose lower portion an outlet conduit 22 arranged along the axis 16 departs. A check valve 24 is fitted on an extension of the outlet conduit 22. The chamber 1 8 is also of cylindrical shape, except in its lower portion which is tapered in the form of a truncated cone.
A piston having a stem 26 and a head 28 which is slidable within the outlet conduit 22 is fitted within the chamber 18. Also the stem 26 is therefore positioned on the axis 16. As is clearly shown in the figures, the stem 26 of the piston is fitted slidably within the inner chamber 1 8 which has a unitary inner volume, that is to say a volume not divided by a diaphragm or any separating partition.
The head 28 of the piston includes (Fig. 3) a pin 30 which departs from the lower end of the stem 26 and supports a disc 32 having a plurality of through holes 34 extending parallel to the axis 16. A circumferential recess 36, into which an inwardly radially protruding heel 38 of an annular seal 40 is inserted with axial clearance, is therefore formed between the lower end of the stem 26 and the perforated disc 32. The seal has a frustoconical profile with the flared end facing downwards. In a known way, not illustrated in the figures, the upper end of the stem 26. which protrudes outside the body 14, is connected to an actuator member which causes it to move in an alternating way along the axis 16.
A fixed spiral 42 is installed coaxially about the axis 16, in the upper portion of the chamber 1 8, from which portion there also departs a further conduit 44 which is provided with a shut-off valve 46 and which leads to a suction device, in particular a vacuum pump 48.
In a known way , which is not described in detail, the chamber 1 8 is provided with a device 50 for controlling the level of the liquid 12, this device being capable of causing the opening of a valve 52 positioned on the liquid supply conduit when the level of the liquid falls below a first pre-established value, and of closing the valve when the liquid level reaches a second pre-established value.
In operation, the liquid 12 is supplied through the conduit 20 into the chamber 1 8 and, falling on an internally positioned member such as the spiral 42, is subjected to a mechanical degassing action. The chamber 1 8 is at a pressure below atmospheric pressure, being at a pressure in the range from 50 to 20,000 Pa for example, because of the action of the vacuum pump 48, so that the pressure drop conditions further promote the release of dissolved gases and vapours from the liquid phase.
The degassed liquid 12 is collected in the lower portion of the chamber 1 8 and from there passes into the outlet conduit 22 by gravity. When the piston is drawn back upwards, the heel 38 of the seal 40 bears on the outer edge of the disc 32 (see Fig. 3), so that the liquid 12 can penetrate into the circumferential recess 36 and, through the holes 34 of the disc 32, pass beyond the seal 40, thus penetrating into the lower end portion of the conduit 22.
Subsequently, when the piston is lowered, the heel 38 of the seal comes to bear against the lower end of the stem 26, while the lower edge of the seal 40 forms a seal against the walls of the outlet conduit 22. In this configuration, the liquid 12 that has penetrated into the lower end portion of the conduit 22 is expelled by the piston which is lowered, and the liquid is thus dosed. As the figures clearly show, the direction of flow of the dosed liquid 12 coming out from the pump 10 through the conduit 22 is parallel to the axis 16.
The dosing is very precise, since the liquid 12 is substantially free of dissolved gases and vapours as a result of the arrangements described above. It should be emphasized that the degassing action is performed by the pump itself, making it unnecessary to provide additional devices for this purpose.
Naturally, the principle of the invention remaining the same, the details of construction and the forms of embodiment may be varied widely with respect to those described, which have been given purely by way of example, without thereby departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the attached claims.
