Description
The present invention relates to a coffee machine comprising a level sensor disposed at the upper part of the brewing chamber wherein coffee is brewed and providing the detection of whether or not the coffee is ready.
In coffee machines wherein the coffee is prepared in the brewing chamber and poured into a cup, coffee and foam residues may accumulate in the brewing chamber after the brewing process. In particular, in coffee machines wherein Turkish coffee can be prepared, accumulation of coffee grounds in the brewing chamber may affect the taste of the brewed coffee. For cleaning, the user can remove the brewing chamber from the coffee machine or the brewing chamber can be cleaned by the cleaning mechanisms used in the coffee machines. The user should control the brewing chamber at certain intervals and check if the brewing chamber is dirty or not. In coffee machines with automatic cleaning function, cleaning algorithms are started after a certain number of brewing operations without checking if the brewing chamber is dirty or not and this causes unnecessary water consumption in situations wherein the brewing chamber is not dirty.
In the state of the art International Patent Application No. WO2007071567, a coffee machine is disclosed that comprises a foam level sensor providing the measurement of the level of the coffee.
In the state of the art Chinese Patent Application No. CN104095537, a coffee machine is disclosed wherein the cup is detected by using an infrared sensor.
In the state of the art Chinese Patent Application No. CN203074335, a coffee machine is disclosed, wherein the water in the water tank is detected by an infrared transmitter and receiver.
The aim of the present invention is the realization of a coffee machine wherein the dirtiness status of the brewing chamber is effectively detected.
The coffee machine realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention and explicated in the claims, comprises a level sensor that provides the measurement of the level of the water-coffee mixture in the brewing chamber and a control unit that enables the measurement to be taken by the level sensor before delivering coffee and water into the brewing chamber and that decides if the brewing chamber is dirty or not by comparing the measured level value with a limit level value recorded in the memory thereof. In the coffee machine of the present invention, when the user wants to prepare coffee, the control unit performs measurement by the level sensor and detects if there is any coffee residue on the base and side walls of the brewing chamber. By means of the present invention, whether the brewing chamber is clean or not is detected by means of the presently used level sensor.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the control unit enables the user to be warned that the brewing chamber is dirty if the level value measured by the level sensor is greater than the limit level value. Thus, by warning the user in the situation wherein the brewing chamber can be taken out of the coffee machine, the user is enabled to remove and clean the brewing chamber and the user is not required to check if the brewing chamber is dirty or not at other times.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the control unit does not start the brewing process upon deciding that the brewing chamber is dirty. In this situation, the control unit enables the level in the brewing chamber to be measured at certain intervals and prevents the brewing process until the conditions predetermined by the producer are met, in other words until the measured level is below the limit level value. By means of this embodiment, it is aimed to prepare the coffee always with the same taste.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the coffee machine comprises a cover that enables the user to access the brewing chamber. The control unit provides the opening of the cover upon deciding that the brewing chamber is dirty. By opening the cover when the brewing chamber is dirty, the warning given to the user is rendered more recognizable.
In another embodiment of the present invention, if the level value measured by the level sensor is smaller than or equal to the limit level value, the control unit decides that the brewing chamber is clean and enables the brewing process to continue.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the coffee machine is a Turkish coffee machine.
The control method of the present invention comprises the steps of performing measurement by the level sensor at the beginning of the brewing process, comparing the measured value with the limit level value, continuing the brewing process if the measured level value is smaller than or equal to the limit level value and warning the user if the measured level value is greater than the limit level value.
In the coffee machine of the present invention, by measuring the level of the mixture in the brewing chamber, thus by using the level sensor that is used for detecting if the coffee is brewed or not, the coffee grounds accumulated in the brewing chamber are enabled to be detected and the user is enabled to be warned when the brewing chamber is dirty. By means of the present invention, both the amount of water consumed for cleaning is decreased and the user is prevented from continuously checking if the brewing chamber is dirty or not.

The following symbols are used so that the present invention is understood better:
L. Measured level
Llim. Limit level value predetermined by the producer
The coffee machine (1) comprises a body (2), a brewing chamber (3) disposed inside the body (2), a heater (4) providing the heating of the brewing chamber (3), a level sensor (5) providing the measurement of the water-coffee mixture in the brewing chamber (3) during brewing.
In the coffee machine (1), coffee is delivered to the brewing chamber (3) automatically or by the user filling manually. As the user gives the start brewing command, water is delivered to the brewing chamber (3) from the water tank ( not shown in the figures) by a pump (not shown in the figures) and the water conduit (not shown in the figures) and the heater (4) provides the brewing of the coffee by heating the brewing chamber (3). The level sensor (5) helps in deciding whether or not the brewing process is completed by measuring the level of the water–coffee mixture in the brewing chamber (3). The coffee that is ready in the brewing chamber (3) is poured into a glass or a pot.
The level sensor (5) is preferably an infrared sensor and measures the height of the water–coffee mixture from the base of the brewing chamber (3). When the coffee is brewed and ready, the level rises with the foam formed thereon and the level sensor (5) provides the decision of whether or not the brewing process is completed to be made.
The coffee machine (1) of the present invention comprises a control unit (6) that enables the level to be measured by means of the level sensor (5) when the brewing chamber (3) is empty at the beginning of the brewing process, in other words before transferring coffee or water into the brewing chamber (3) and that compares the measured level (L) with a predetermined limit level value (Llim) to determine the dirtiness status of the brewing chamber (3).
When coffee residues accumulate in the brewing chamber (3), accumulating residues form a layer on the base and side walls of the brewing chamber (3). In this situation, the level (L) obtained in the measurement performed by the level sensor (5) is greater than the value obtained in the measurement performed when there is no coffee residue or any other thing in the brewing chamber, in other words when the brewing chamber (3) is clean. The producer saves the value measured by the level sensor (5) when the brewing chamber (3) is clean as zero into the memory of the control unit (6). By accepting the measurement performed when the brewing chamber (3) as zero, the need for a reference value to be used during the comparison of the measurement values and thus, when a layer is formed in the brewing chamber (3) due to coffee residues, the height of the layer can be directly measured by the level sensor (5). The producer determines a limit level value (Llim) within certain tolerances as a result of conducted experiments and this limit level value (Llim) is saved in the memory of the control unit (6).
In another embodiment of the present invention, the level sensor (5) measures the distance between the same and the brewing chamber (3). In this case, the measurement values received from the level sensor (5) are calibrated so that the value measured when the brewing chamber (3) is zero and processed by the control unit (6).
The control unit (6) enables the level to be measured by the level sensor (5) at the beginning of the brewing process and compares the measured level (L) with the limit level value (Llim). If the measured level (L) is greater than the limit level value (Llim), in other words if more coffee residue than the limit amount projected by the producer accumulates in the brewing chamber (3), it is decided that the brewing chamber (3) is dirty. It is decided that the brewing chamber (3) is clean if the measured level (L) is equal to or smaller than the limit level value (Llim).
In an embodiment of the present invention, the control unit (6) enables the user to be warned if the measured level (L) is greater than a predetermined limit level value (Llim), in other words when it is decided that the brewing chamber (3) is dirty. In this embodiment, the user is warned by audio and/or visual warnings that the brewing chamber (3) is dirty. Then, by, if available, starting the automatic cleaning mechanism or by the brewing chamber (3) being manually cleaned by the user, the brewing chamber (3) can be cleaned.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the control unit (6) does not start the brewing process if the measured level (L) is greater than a predetermined limit level value (Llim), in other words when it is decided that the brewing chamber (3) is dirty. In this embodiment, the control unit (6) enables the level to be measured by the level sensor (5) at certain intervals and prevents the start of the brewing process until the measured level (L) is equal to or smaller than the limit level value (Llim).
In another embodiment of the present invention, the coffee machine (1) comprises a cover (7) that is disposed on the body (2) and that enables the user to access the brewing chamber (3) and the control unit (6) enables the cover (7) to be opened if the measured level (L) is greater than a predetermined limit level value (Llim), in other words when it is decided that the brewing chamber (3) is dirty. Thus, by enabling the cover (7) to open automatically in the coffee machines (1) wherein the brewing chamber (3) is cleaned by the user, the user can more easily access the brewing chamber (3).
In another embodiment of the present invention, the control unit (6) starts the brewing process by operating the heater (4) if the measured level (L) is equal to or smaller than a predetermined limit level value (Llim), in other words when it is decided that the brewing chamber (3) is clean.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the coffee machine (1) is suitable to prepare Turkish coffee.
The control method of the present invention used in the above-disclosed coffee machine (1) and executed by the control unit (6), comprises the following steps for determining the dirtiness status of the brewing chamber (3),
- measuring the level in the empty brewing chamber (3) by the level sensor (5) (101),
- comparing the measured value (L) with the limit level value (Llim) (102),
- deciding by the control unit (6) that the brewing chamber (3) is clean if the measured value (L) is equal to or smaller than the limit level value (Llim) and starting the brewing process by operating the heater (4) (103),
- deciding that the brewing chamber (3) is dirty if the measured value (L) is greater than the limit level value (Llim) and warning the user (104),
- returning to the step (101).
In the coffee machine (1) of the present invention, without using any additional component, by means of the level sensor (5) presently used for measuring the level of the water-coffee mixture, the dirtiness status of the brewing chamber (3) is detected. By means of the present invention, by preventing the cleaning operation in situations wherein the brewing chamber (3) is not required to be cleaned, water consumption is decreased and moreover, the user is not required to check if the brewing chamber (3) is dirty or not.
