Description

A COLLAR FOR MOUNTING AROUND THE NECK OF AN ANIMAL AND A FASTENER
The invention relates to a collar for mounting around the neck of an animal and particularly to a collar of the type used to prevent animals from licking or biting wounds or lesions.
Such collars are most often used for pets and domesticated animals such as, for example, dogs and cats and may also be used for other animals such as, for example, birds, rodents and horses.
However, such collars are not limited for use on domestic animals and can be used on any species of animal, as appropriate. The collars are mounted around the neck of the animal to prevent the animal from licking or biting, especially, for example, wounds, lesions, bandages or stiches.
Known collars of this type are typically made of a relatively strong sheet, web or film of plastics material of approximately 1mm or less. These known collars typically have the shape of a circular ring or circular ring sector. The collars are assembled around the neck of the animal by joining along two radially extending edges of the circular ring sector to thereby form a frusto conical shape wherein the smaller radius of the frusto conical shaped collar engages and is usually attached to a band disposed around the neck of the animal and the head of the animal is present in within the collar allowing the animal to look outwards towards and through the larger radius opening of the frusto conical shaped collar.
Patent document FR2630297 describes a collar having a first tongue for passing through a straight slot in the collar. A second tongue directed in the opposite direction to the first tongue and integral therewith forms a hook adapted to be passed through a second slot and thereby lock the collar in its assembled state.
Patent document US3036554 describes a collar which, when placed around the neck of a dog, is assembled using laces or staples.
Patent document US3072098 describes a collar which is assembled using a strip having two U-bends which are attached to the collar using two staples. Patent document US5012764 describes a collar which is assembled using complementary fasteners in the form of, for example, loops and hooks which are fastened to the overlapping ends of the collar.
Patent document DE4100851 describes a collar having overlapping ends which are fastened using snap fasteners.
Patent document US5797354 describes a collar having, at its edges, protruding tongues on a rib and a wide central part and an outer end. The collar is assembled by passing each tongue through a C- shaped first slot and the rib of the tongue is placed in the bottom of the C-shaped first slot and the outer end of the tongue is snapped through a C-shaped second slot, which does not allow the wider central part of the tongue to pass. The tongues and thereby locked in an associated pair of first and second slot.
All the above collars and methods of attachment of the two ends of the collars are disadvantaged in that they do not provide sufficient strength of attachment and/or are complicated to fit and/or are relatively expensive and the whole of the collar is a one-use disposable product. Furthermore, known collars are disadvantaged because they cannot be easily and quickly adjusted in-situ, that is when the collar has already been fitted to the animal.
Fitting known collars of this type on animals is known to be difficult especially as the animal is often resists having the collar fitted and is often frightened and restless. Furthermore, the longer the collar takes to fit on the animal the more frightened and restless the animal becomes. Therefore, it is desirable that there is a collar which is easy and quick to fit on an animal and also easy and quick after it has been fitted on an animal.
It is therefore desirable in the industry for there to be a relatively cost effective collar having a secure, easy and quick to use fastening means which is easily and quickly adjustable when the collar has already been fitted on the animal. An object of the present invention is to provide a cost effective collar which is can be secure and easy and quick to fit on an animal.

The fastener 14 is slidable along the web of material 12 by way of the first, second and third attachment members 70, 72 and 74 travelling along the first, second and third elongate tracks 24, 26 and 28, respectively. Therefore, a specific size (diameter) of collar 10 can be formed. When the collar size has been determined, then the attachment members 70, 72, and 74 engage the respective attachment member indents 36a, 38a and 40a or 36b, 38b and 40b or the indents current engaging the fastener 14 as illustrated in Figure 1. The barbs, 88, 90 and 92 function to engage with the web of material 12 by way of the region surrounding each of the elongate tracks, 24, 26 and 28, respectively.
The first, second and third attachment members, 70, 72 and 74 are then passed through the first, second and third attachment apertures, 98, 100 and 102, respectively, of the attachment plate 97.
Again the barbs 88, 90 and 92 function to engage with the attachment plate 97 and thereby detachably attach the first end portion 18 to the fastener 14 between the base portion 60 and the attachment plate 97.
The web of material is then formed into a frusto conical type shape as it is placed around the neck of an animal and, also referring to Figure 3b, the second end portion 22 is attached to the fastener by passing the first and second attachment members 70 and 72 through the first and second attachment member apertures 50 and 52, respectively, and passing the raised locating member through the locating member aperture 48. The fourth inner fastener positioning indent 56 and the fourth outer fastener positioning indent 58 engage with the fastener.
The fastening portion 62 is then closed over the base portion 60 which causes the fastening member 96 to pass through the fastening member apertures 54, 104 and 42 to fasten, by friction fit, the second end portion to the fastener and thereby attach the first end portion 18 to the second end portion 22. Accordingly, the collar 10 is easily and quickly fitted on the animal and is also easily removed allowing at least the fastener to be re-usable.
Three securing straps 108a, 108b and 108c may be formed into loops for connecting to a band around the animal's neck.
