Abstract
복합 구조의 정합층을 가진 초음파 트랜스듀서 및 그 제조방법이 개시된다. 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 따른 초음파 트랜스듀서는, 적어도 하나의 압전소자를 포함하는 능동소자와, 능동소자의 전면에 형성되어 능동소자와 피검사체 간의 음향 임피던스를 정합하는 적어도 2층 구조의 정합층을 포함하며, 정합층은 능동소자와 피검사체 간의 음향 임피던스를 정합하기 위하여 N개의 물질(N≥2인 정수)을 이용해서 각각 서로 다른 음향 임피던스 크기를 가지는 2N개의 층을 구성한다.
Description
본 발명은 초음파를 이용하여 피검사체 내부의 영상 정보를 획득하는 초음파 트랜스듀서에 관한 것이다.
초음파 진단장치는 초음파 신호를 피검사체에 쏘아 반사된 초음파 신호로 피검사체의 내부 조직을 영상화하는 장치이다. 초음파 진단장치는 피검사체의 진단 부위에 초음파 신호를 송신한 후, 서로 다른 음향 임피던스(acoustic impedance)를 갖는 피검사체 내부의 조직들의 경계로부터 반사된 초음파 신호를 수신함으로써 진단 부위의 영상 정보를 획득할 수 있다.
초음파 진단장치는 초음파 신호를 피검사체로 송신하고 피검사체로 반사된 초음파 신호를 수신하기 위한 초음파 트랜스듀서(ultrasonic transducer)가 포함된다. 초음파 트랜스듀서는 크게 능동소자(active element), 정합층(matching layer) 및 후면층(backing layer)을 포함한다.
일 실시 예에 따라, 정합층의 음향 임피던스 변화 폭을 줄여 대역폭 및 감도가 향상된 초음파 트랜스듀서 및 그 제조방법을 제안한다.
일 실시 예에 따른 초음파 트랜스듀서는, 적어도 하나의 압전소자를 포함하는 능동소자와, 능동소자의 전면에 형성되어 능동소자와 피검사체 간의 음향 임피던스를 정합하는 적어도 2층 구조의 정합층을 포함하며, 정합층은 능동소자와 피검사체 간의 음향 임피던스를 정합하기 위하여 N개의 물질(N≥2인 정수)을 이용해서 각각 서로 다른 음향 임피던스 크기를 가지는 2N개의 층을 구성한다.
일 실시 예에 따른 정합층은 제1 임피던스 값을 가지는 제1 물질로 구성된 제1층과, 제2 임피던스 값을 가지는 제2 물질로 구성된 제2층과, 제1층과 제2층 사이에 형성되고 제1 물질과 제2 물질을 결합하여 제1층 및 제2층 간 음향 임피던스 변화 폭을 줄이는 제3층을 포함한다. 나아가, 정합층은 정합층의 전면에 위치하는 음향렌즈와 제2층 사이에 형성되고 음향렌즈 물질과 제2 물질을 결합하여 음향렌즈 및 제2층 간 음향 임피던스 변화 폭을 줄이는 제4층을 포함한다.
일 실시 예에 따른 제3층은 음향 임피던스의 변화 폭을 고려하여 제1 물질과 제2 물질 간의 간격, 제1 물질과 제2 물질의 너비 및 층의 두께 중 적어도 하나가 조절된다. 일 실시 예에 따른 제3층은 제1 물질과 제2 물질이 교대로 톱니 형태로 배열된다. 일 실시 예에 따른 제3층은 제1 물질과 제2 물질이 다면체, 원형, 뿔 형, 기둥 형 중 어느 하나의 형태를 가진다.
일 실시 예에 따른 제4층은 음향 임피던스의 변화 폭을 고려하여 제2 물질과 음향렌즈 물질 간의 간격, 제2 물질과 음향렌즈 물질의 너비 및 층의 두께 중 적어도 하나가 조절된다. 일 실시 예에 따른 제4층은 제2 물질과 음향렌즈 물질이 교대로 톱니 형태로 배열된다. 일 실시 예에 따른 제4층은 제2 물질과 음향렌즈 물질이 다면체, 원형, 뿔 형, 기둥 형 중 어느 하나의 형태를 가진다.
일 실시 예에 따른 정합층은 층 간에 단계적이되 불연속적으로 음향 임피던스 변화폭이 변화한다. 일 실시 예에 따른 정합층은 하위 층의 음향 임피던스 값은 상위 층의 음향 임피던스 값보다 크다.
다른 실시 예에 따른 초음파 트랜스듀서는 적어도 2층 구조의 정합층과, 정합층의 전면에 형성되는 음향렌즈를 포함하며, 정합층은 제1 물질로 구성된 제1층과, 제1층과 음향렌즈 사이에 형성되고 제1 물질과 음향렌즈의 물질을 결합하여 제1층 및 음향렌즈 간 음향 임피던스 변화 폭을 줄이는 제2층을 포함한다.
또 다른 실시 예에 따른 초음파 트랜스듀서 제조방법은, 복합 구조의 정합층을 제조하는 단계를 포함하며, 정합층을 제조하는 단계는 제1 물질로 구성된 제1층이 형성되는 단계와, 제1층에 다수의 홈이 가공되는 단계와, 제1층의 홈에 제2 물질이 부어 채워져 제1 물질과 제2 물질이 결합한 제2층이 형성되는 단계와, 제2층에 제2 물질이 적재되고 그 두께가 조절됨에 따라 제2층 위에 제2 물질로 구성된 제3층이 형성되는 단계를 포함한다.
추가 실시 예에 따른 정합층을 제조하는 단계는, 제2 물질로 구성된 제3층에 다수의 홈이 가공되는 단계와, 제3층의 홈에 음향렌즈 물질이 부어 채워져 제2 물질과 음향렌즈 물질이 결합한 제4층이 형성되는 단계를 더 포함하며, 초음파 트랜스듀서 제조방법은 제4층에 음향렌즈 물질이 적재되고 그 두께 및 형태가 조절됨에 따라 제4층 위에 음향렌즈가 형성되는 단계를 더 포함한다.
추가 실시 예에 따른 정합층을 제조하는 단계는, 제2 물질로 구성된 제3층에 다수의 홈이 가공되는 단계와, 제3층의 홈에 제3 물질이 부어 채워져 제2 물질과 제3 물질이 결합한 제4층이 형성되는 단계와, 제4층에 제3 물질이 적재되고 그 두께가 조절됨에 따라 제4층 위에 제3 물질로 구성된 제5층이 형성되는 단계를 포함한다.
일 실시 예에 따르면, 능동소자에서 발생한 초음파가 본 발명의 음향 임피던스 변화 폭이 작은 복합 구조의 정합층(interlaced matching layer: 이하 IML이라 칭함)을 통해 피검사체로 전달되는 경우 초음파 트랜스듀서의 감도(sensitivity) 및 대역폭(bandwidth)이 향상된다.
나아가, 최소의 재료로 최대의 음향 임피던스 변화 폭 조절 효율을 가진다. 예를 들어, 능동소자와 피검사체 간의 음향 임피던스를 정합하기 위하여 N개의 물질(N≥2인 정수)만 이용해서 각각 서로 다른 음향 임피던스 크기를 가지는 2N개의 층을 사용한 효과를 가질 수 있다. 또한, IML의 간격 및 너비를 자유롭게 조절하여 정합층의 음향 임피던스 변화 폭을 결정할 수 있으므로 초음파 트랜스듀서 설계의 자유도가 높아진다.
나아가, 본 발명의 IML은 직선 배열형(linear array), 곡선 배열형(convex array), 위상 배열형(phased array), 단일 소자형(single element) 등과 같은 트랜스듀서의 종류에 상관없이 모두 적용 가능하다.
나아가, 중심 주파수가 높은 초음파 트랜스듀서의 경우 정합층의 두께가 얇아지기 때문에 제작이 어렵지만, 본 발명의 IML은 그 두께가 전체적으로 두꺼워지므로 제작이 용이하다.

이하에서는 첨부한 도면을 참조하여 본 발명의 실시 예들을 상세히 설명한다. 본 발명을 설명함에 있어 관련된 공지 기능 또는 구성에 대한 구체적인 설명이 본 발명의 요지를 불필요하게 흐릴 수 있다고 판단되는 경우에는 그 상세한 설명을 생략할 것이다. 또한, 후술되는 용어들은 본 발명에서의 기능을 고려하여 정의된 용어들로서 이는 사용자, 운용자의 의도 또는 관례 등에 따라 달라질 수 있다. 그러므로 그 정의는 본 명세서 전반에 걸친 내용을 토대로 내려져야 할 것이다.
본 명세서에서 제1 물질 층이 제2 물질 층 상에 형성된다고 할 경우에, 그것은 제1 물질 층이 제2 물질 층 바로 위(directly on)에 형성되는 경우는 물론, 명시적으로 이를 배제하는 기재가 없는 한, 다른 제3 물질 층이 제1 물질 층과 제2 물질 층의 사이에 개재되어 있는 것(upper)도 모두 포함하는 것으로 해석되어야 한다.
도 1은 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 따른 복합 구조의 정합층(interlaced matching layer)을 가진 초음파 트랜스듀서의 구성을 도시적으로 보여주는 구조도이다.
이하, '도식적'이라는 것은 도시된 도면이 초음파 트랜스듀서에 포함되는 구성 요소들 사이의 상대적인 위치 관계 또는 적층 관계를 나타낸다는 것을 의미함을 명시한다. 따라서, 초음파 트랜스듀서에 포함되는 구성 요소들 각각의 구체적인 형상이나 두께 등은 반드시 도면에 도시된 것과 일치하지 않을 수도 있다.
도 1을 참조하면, 초음파 트랜스듀서(1)는 후면층(backing layer)(10), 능동소자(active component)(11) 및 정합층(matching layer)(12)을 포함한다.
초음파 트랜스듀서(1)는 단일 소자 트랜스듀서(single element transducer)이거나, 도 1에 도시된 바와 같이 소자(element)(110)가 다수 개로 구성된 어레이 트랜스듀서(array transducer)이다. 본 발명은 직선 배열형(linear array), 곡선 배열형(convex array), 위상 배열형(phased array) 등 모든 형태의 배열형 트랜스듀서에 적용 가능하다. 이하에서는 배열형 트랜스듀서의 경우를 중심으로 설명한다. 하지만, 본 발명이 후술하는 실시 예에 의해서 한정되는 것으로 해석되어서는 안 된다.
도 1에 있어서, 초음파 트랜스듀서(1)의 소자(110)가 늘어서 있는 방향을 측 방향(Azimuth direction)이라 하고, 빔(beam) 신호가 진행하는 깊이(depth) 방향을 축 방향(Axial direction)이라 하며, 이 두 방향에 직교하는 방향을 상 방향(Elevation direction)이라 명한다. 동일한 구경(aperture) 내에서 소자(110)의 수가 많을수록 높은 측 방향 해상도(higher lateral resolution)와 넓은 수광각(wide acceptance angle)을 가진다. 따라서, 획득되는 초음파 영상의 품질을 향상시킬 수 있다.
정합층(12)은 능동소자(11)와 피검사체 사이에 배치되어서 두 구성 요소 사이의 음향 임피던스(acoustic impedance) 차이를 중재한다. 일 실시 예에 따른 정합층(12)은 다수 개의 층(multi-layer)이 적층된다. 통상적으로 능동소자(11)인 압전소자의 음향 임피던스는 약 30MRayl 정도인데 반하여 피검사체인 인체 연부조직(soft tissue)의 음향 임피던스는 약 1.5MRayl 정도이다. 만일, 정합층(12)이 없다면, 능동소자(11)에서 발생한 초음파 또는 피검사체에서 반사된 초음파는 능동소자(11)와 피검사체의 경계면을 투과하지 못하고 대부분이 반사 또는 산란된다. 결국, 정합층(12)이 없으면 인체 연부조직 등과 같은 낮은 음향 임피던스를 가진 피검사체에 대해서는 초음파 트랜스듀서를 이용한 검사와 이에 기초한 병변 진단이 실질적으로 불가능하다.
효과적인 음향 임피던스 차이의 중재를 위해서는, 정합층의 음향 임피던스가 피검사체의 음향 임피던스와 능동소자의 음향 임피던스의 곱의 제곱근을 만족해야 하는 것으로 알려져 있다(DeSilet 공식). 그런데, 단일 층 구조로서 DeSilet 공식을 만족하면서 동시에 작은 신호 감쇄 등과 같은 정합층의 요건을 충족하는 적당한 소재가 없다. 따라서, 본 발명은 다층 구조, 예를 들어 도 1에 도시된 바와 같이 제1층(121)과 제2층(122)으로 구성된 정합층(12)을 사용한다.
이하, 도 2 내지 도 5를 참조로 하여 본 발명의 다수 개의 층이 적층된 정합층을 포함한 초음파 트랜스듀서의 다양한 실시 예를 후술한다. 도 2 내지 도 5를 참조로 하여 후술할 초음파 트랜스듀서들은 모두 음향 임피던스 변화 폭이 작도록 제조된 정합층을 제공한다. 능동소자에서 발생한 초음파가 정합층을 통해 피검사체로 전달되는 경우, 음향 임피던스 변화 폭이 작을수록 초음파 트랜스듀서의 감도(sensitivity) 및 대역폭(bandwidth)이 향상된다.
도 2는 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 따른 초음파 트랜스듀서의 구성을 도시적으로 보여주는 구조도이다.
도 2를 참조하면, 초음파 트랜스듀서(2)는 후면층(10), 능동소자(11) 및 정합층(22)을 포함하며, 음향렌즈(acoustic lens)(14)를 더 포함할 수 있다.
정합층(22)은 2층 이상의 복수의 층들로 구성된다. 복수의 층으로 정합층(22)을 구성하는 이유는, 도 1을 참조로 하여 전술한 바와 같이, 능동소자(11)와 피검사체인 인체조직 사이의 음향 임피던스 차이가 상대적으로 크기 때문에, 요구되는 특성을 갖는 정합층을 단일 물질의 층으로는 형성하는 것이 어렵기 때문이다.
도 2에서는 정합층(22)이 3개의 층인, 제1층(221), 제2층(222) 및 제3층(223)으로 적층된 초음파 트랜스듀서(2)를 도시하고 있다. 그러나, 이는 본 발명의 이해를 돕기 위한 것일 뿐, 정합층(22)을 구성하는 층 수는 이에 한정되지는 않는다. 예를 들어, 제3 물질로 구성된 정합층이 더 포함되는 경우, 제2 물질과 제3 물질을 결합한 정합층이 더 형성될 수 있다. 이하, 설명의 편의를 위해 도 2에 도시된 바와 같이 정합층(22)이 3개의 층(221,222,223)으로 이루어진 초음파 트랜스듀서(2)를 중심으로 후술한다.
정합층(22)의 제1층(221)은 단일의 제1 물질로 구성되고, 제2층(222)은 단일의 제2 물질로 구성된다. 이에 비해, 제3층(223)은 제1층(221)의 제1 물질과 제2층(222)의 제2 물질이 결합한다. 이하, 명세서에서 단일 물질로 구성된 정합층을 ML(matching layer)로 표기하고, 다수의 물질이 섞여 있는 정합층을 IML(interlaced matching layer)이라고 표기한다.
후면층(10)은 음향 임피던스가 능동소자(11)와 잘 정합되도록 구성된다. 후면층(10)은 우수한 흡음 특성인, 음향 감쇄 특성을 가지도록 구성될 수 있다. 우수한 흡음 특성을 가진 후면층(10)은 전면에 형성되는 능동소자(11)의 자유 진동을 억제하여 초음파의 펄스 폭을 감소시킬 뿐만 아니라 능동소자(11)에서 발생하여 후면으로 초음파가 불필요하게 전파되는 것을 차단함으로써 영상 왜곡이 생기는 것을 효과적으로 방지한다. 후면층(10)은 흡음 특성이 우수한 재질의 물질을 사용하여 하나 또는 복수의 층으로 형성될 수 있다. 후면층(10)은 전면에 위치하는 연성 인쇄회로기판(Flexible PCB)에 결합하며, 연성 인쇄회로기판의 전면에 위치하는 능동소자와 상호 전기적 신호를 주고 받을 수 있다.
능동소자(11)는 단일 층 또는 다수의 층으로 구성된다. 능동소자(11)가 적층 구조를 가지는 경우, 단일 층의 능동소자를 갖는 구조에 비해 음향 임피던스를 줄일 수 있고, 정전용량(capacitance)을 증대시킬 수 있다. 일 실시 예에 따른 능동소자(11)는 양단에 위치한 연성 인쇄회로기판과 접지 시트(ground sheet)에 전압이 인가되는 등의 방법으로 에너지가 가해지면 초음파 신호를 발생시킨다. 일 실시 예에 따른 능동소자(11)에 의하여 발생하는 초음파 신호는 다양한 주파수를 가질 수 있다.
능동소자(11)의 종류는 초음파 트랜스듀서(2)의 종류에 따라서 달라질 수 있는데, 통상적으로 압전소자(piezoelectric element)로 구성된다. 압전소자는 압전효과를 통해 기계적인 압력이 가해지면 전압이 발생하고, 전압이 인가되면 기계적인 변형이 발생하는 성질을 가진다. 압전소자들의 형상이나 배열되는 패턴에 특별한 제한은 없다. 압전소자는 티탄산 지르콘산 납(lead zirconate titanate: PZT) 계 등의 압전 세라믹, 단결정, 이들 재료와 고분자 재료를 복합한 복합 압전체, 또는 폴리불화비닐리덴(PolyVinyliDene Fluoride: PVDF)로 대표되는 고분자 재료의 압전체 등으로 형성될 수 있다. 또한, 적층된 구조로 제작할 때, 동일한 압전소자들을 적층할 수도 있지만, PZT, 압전 세라믹, 단결정 등 서로 다른 압전소자들을 혼합해서 적층할 수도 있다.
정합층(22)은 능동소자(11)의 전면에 위치한다. 정합층(22)은 능동소자(11)와 피검사체 간 음향 임피던스를 정합함으로써, 능동소자(11)에서 발생한 초음파를 피검사체로 전달하거나 피검사체에 의하여 반사되어 되돌아오는 반사 신호의 손실을 저감시킨다. 정합층(22)은 능동소자(11)와 피검사체 간 음향 임피던스의 급격한 변화에 따른 영상 왜곡 등의 문제를 감소시키는 완충 역할을 할 수 있다.
정합층(22)은 2층 이상의 복수의 층들로 구성된다. 도 2를 참조하면, 정합층(22)을 구성하는 ML1(221)과 ML2(222)는 단일 물질로 구성된다. 예를 들어, ML1(221)은 단일의 제1 물질로 구성되고, ML2(222)는 단일의 제2 물질로 구성된다. 이때, 제1 물질과 제2 물질은 음향 임피던스가 서로 상이하다. 상위 단에 있는 제1 물질보다 하위 단에 있는 제2 물질이 음향 임피던스가 더 클 수 있다. 예를 들어, 하위 단의 ML1(221)은 상대적으로 큰 음향 임피던스(예컨대, 약 6~9 Mrayls)를 갖는 물질로 구성된 고 임피던스 정합층(High impedance Matching Layer)이다. 그리고, ML2(222)는 상대적으로 작은 음향 임피던스(예컨대, 약 2~3 Mrayls)를 갖는 물질로 구성된 저 임피던스 정합층(Low impedance Matching Layer)이다.
IML1(223)은 ML1(221)과 ML2(222)의 경계에 형성된다. 그리고, ML1(221)의 제1 물질과 ML2(222)의 제2 물질을 결합하여 제1 물질과 제2 물질 간 음향 임피던스 차이를 줄인다. IML1(223)에 의해 ML1(221)과 ML2(222) 간의 음향 임피던스 변화 폭이 줄어들게 된다.
일 실시 예에 따른 IML1(223)은 제1 물질과 제2 물질이 교대로 톱니 형태로 배열된다. 일 실시 예에 따른 IML1(223)은 제1 물질과 제2 물질이 다면체, 원형, 뿔 형, 기둥 형 중 어느 하나의 형태를 가진다. 이에 대한 실시 예는 후술되는 도 6 내지 도 8을 참조로 하여 설명한다.
도 2의 깊이(Depth)에 따른 음향 임피던스(Z) 그래프를 살펴보면, 층 간에 단계적이되 불연속적으로 음향 임피던스 변화폭이 변화한다. ML2(222), IML1(223), ML1(221)으로 내려갈수록 음향 임피던스 크기(ZML2, ZIML1, ZML1)는 단계적으로 증가하나, 선형의 연속적인 형태는 아니다. 음향 임피던스 변화폭은 IML1(223)을 구성하는 물질들의 성분과 그 배합에 따라 조절 가능하다. 일 실시 예에 따른 IML1(223)은 음향 임피던스의 변화 폭을 고려하여 제1 물질과 제2 물질 간의 간격, 제1 물질과 제2 물질의 너비 및 층의 두께 등이 조절된다. 이에 따라, 정합층(22)의 음향 임피던스 변화를 조절할 수 있으므로 초음파 트랜스듀서(2) 설계의 자유도가 높아진다.
일 실시 예에 따른 정합층(22)과 능동소자(11) 사이에는 접지 시트(ground sheet)가 형성되고, 정합층(22)은 접지 시트를 통해 능동소자(11)와 상호 전기적 신호를 주고 받을 수 있다.
음향렌즈(14)는 초음파 트랜스듀서(2)의 최외곽에 위치한다. 음향렌즈(14)를 통해 정합층(22)을 통과한 초음파를 피검사체에 접속시킬 수 있다. 일 실시 예에 따른 음향렌즈(14)는 초음파가 손실 없이 또는 손실을 최소화하고 투과할 수 있도록 하며, 경계면에서의 반사/재반사에 따른 손실을 최소화하도록 구현된다. 이를 위해 음향렌즈(14)의 음향 임피던스(Zlens)가 인체 연부조직의 음향 임피던스와 같거나 유사할 수 있다.
도 3은 본 발명의 다른 실시 예에 따른 초음파 트랜스듀서의 구성을 도시적으로 보여주는 구조도이다.
도 3을 참조하면, 초음파 트랜스듀서(3)는 후면층(10), 능동소자(11), 정합층(32) 및 음향렌즈(14)를 포함하다.
도 3의 초음파 트랜스듀서(3)를 도 2의 초음파 트랜스듀서(2)와 비교해보면, 정합층(32)은 복수의 층들로 구성되되, 서로 다른 임피던스 크기를 가진 단일의 물질로 구성된 층들을 포함한다는 점은 서로 동일하다. 그러나, 정합층(32)의 IML1(323)의 물질이 음향렌즈(14)의 물질과 결합한 형태라는 점에서 차이가 있다. 이하, 차이가 있거나 본 발명에서 관심 있는 구성을 위주로 설명하므로, 설명하지 않은 구성은 도 2를 참조로 하여 전술한 바와 동일하거나 유사하다 할 것이다.
정합층(32)은 2층 이상의 복수의 층들로 구성된다. 복수의 층으로 정합층(32)을 구성하는 이유는, 도 1을 참조로 하여 전술한 바와 같이, 능동소자(11)와 피검사체인 인체조직 사이의 음향 임피던스 차이가 상대적으로 크기 때문에, 요구되는 특성을 갖는 정합층을 단일 물질의 층으로는 형성하는 것이 어렵기 때문이다.
도 3에서는 정합층(32)이 3개의 층인, ML1(321), ML2(322) 및 IML1(323)으로 적층된 초음파 트랜스듀서(3)를 도시하고 있다. 그러나, 이는 본 발명의 이해를 돕기 위한 것일 뿐, 정합층(32)을 구성하는 층 수는 이에 한정되지는 않는다.
정합층(32)은 능동소자(11)의 전면에 위치한다. 정합층(32)은 능동소자(11)와 피검사체 간 음향 임피던스를 매칭함으로써, 능동소자(11)에서 발생한 초음파를 피검사체로 전달하거나 피검사체에 의하여 반사되어 되돌아오는 반사 신호의 손실을 저감시킨다. 정합층(32)은 능동소자(11)와 피검사체 간 음향 임피던스의 급격한 변화에 따른 영상 왜곡 등의 문제를 감소시키는 완충 역할을 할 수 있다.

도 4 및 도 5는 본 발명의 또 다른 실시 예에 따른 초음파 트랜스듀서의 구성을 도시적으로 보여주는 구조도이다.
도 4를 참조하면, 초음파 트랜스듀서(4)는 후면층(10), 능동소자(11), 정합층(42) 및 음향렌즈(14)를 포함하다. 도 4의 초음파 트랜스듀서(4)는 도 2의 초음파 트랜스듀서(2)의 정합층(22)의 특성과 도 3의 초음파 트랜스듀서(3)의 정합층(32)의 특성이 결합한 형태이다.
우선, 정합층(42)은 복수의 층들로 구성되되, 단일의 제1 물질로 구성된 ML1(421)과, 제1 물질과 다른 임피던스 크기를 가진 단일의 제2 물질로 구성된 ML2(422)을 포함한다. 그리고, 정합층(42)은 ML1(421)의 제1 물질과 ML2(422)의 제2 물질이 결합한 IML1(423)과, ML2(422)의 제2 물질과 음향렌즈(14)의 물질이 결합한 IML2(424)을 포함한다. 이 경우, 초음파 트랜스듀서(4)는 능동소자(11)와 피검사체 간의 음향 임피던스를 정합하기 위한 N개의 물질(N≥2인 정수)을 이용하여 각각 서로 다른 음향 임피던스 크기를 가지는 2N개의 층을 구성하게 된다. 예를 들어, 도 4에 도시된 바와 같이, 2개의 물질(제1 물질, 제2 물질)을 이용하여 4개의 정합층(ML1(421), ML2(422), IML1(423) 및 IML2(424))를 구성할 수 있다. 이에 따라 최소한의 물질을 이용하여 최대의 정합층을 형성할 수 있게 된다.
이하, 도 2 및 도 3과 차이가 있거나 본 발명에서 관심 있는 구성을 위주로 설명하므로, 설명하지 않은 구성은 도 2를 참조로 하여 전술한 바와 동일하거나 유사하다 할 것이다.

한편, 도 5의 초음파 트랜스듀서(5)는 도 4를 참조로 하여 전술한 초음파 트랜스듀서(4)의 정합층 형태에 2개의 층이 더 포함된 형태이다.
도 5를 참조하면, 정합층(52)은 단일의 제1 물질로 구성된 ML1(521)과, 단일의 제2 물질로 구성된 ML2(522)과, ML1(521)의 제1 물질과 ML2(522)의 제2 물질이 결합한 IML1(523)과, 단일의 제3 물질로 구성된 ML3(524)과, 제2 물질과 제3 물질이 결합한 IML2(525)과, 제3 물질과 음향렌즈(14)의 물질이 결합한 IML3(526)을 포함한다. 이 경우, 도 4를 참조로 전술한 초음파 트랜스듀서(5)의 실시 예와 마찬가지로 능동소자(11)와 피검사체 간의 음향 임피던스를 정합하기 위한 N개의 물질(N≥2인 정수)을 이용하여 각각 서로 다른 음향 임피던스 크기를 가지는 2N개의 층을 구성할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 도 5에 도시된 바와 같이, 3개의 물질(제1 물질, 제2 물질, 제3 물질)을 이용하여 6개의 정합층(ML1(521), ML2(522), IML1(523) 및 ML3(524), IML2(525), IML3(526))을 구성할 수 있다. 이에 따라, 최소한의 물질을 이용하여 최대의 정합층을 형성할 수 있게 된다. IML의 수가 증가할수록 층 간 음향 임피던스의 변화 폭은 작아지게 되어, 초음파 트랜스듀서의 대역폭이 증가하고 감도가 향상되게 된다. 또한, 정합층의 두께가 증가하게 되어 제조하기가 용이해진다.
도 6 내지 도 8은 본 발명의 다양한 실시 예에 따른 IML의 구조도이다.
도 6 내지 도 8을 참조하면, 일 실시 예에 따른 IML은 제1 물질과 제2 물질이 교대로 톱니 형태로 배열된다. 일 실시 예에 따른 IML은 제1 물질과 제2 물질이 다면체, 원형, 뿔 형, 기둥 형 중 어느 하나의 형태를 가질 수 있다. 그러나 전술한 실시 예는 본 발명의 이해를 돕기 위한 일 실시 예일 뿐 그 형태는 이에 한정되지는 않는다. 제1 물질과 제2 물질은 서로 동일한 형태일 수 있고, 서로 다른 형태일 수도 있다. 나아가, 교대로 톱니 형태로 배열되는 제1 물질과 제2 물질이 다면체, 원형, 뿔 형, 기둥 형 중 어느 하나의 형태를 가질 수 있다.
도 9는 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 따른 초음파 진단장치의 구성도이다.
도 9를 참조하면, 초음파 진단장치(9)는 초음파 트랜스듀서(1), 빔포밍부(2), 영상 처리부(3) 및 출력부(4)를 포함한다.
초음파 트랜스듀서(1)는 다수의 소자(110-1,110-2,…,110-n)로 이루어질 수 있다. 초음파 트랜스듀서(1)는 적어도 2층 구조의 정합층을 포함하며, 정합층은 능동소자와 피검사체 간의 음향 임피던스를 정합하기 위한 N개의 물질(N≥2인 정수)을 이용하여 각각 서로 다른 음향 임피던스 크기를 가지는 2N개의 층을 구성한다.
예를 들어, 초음파 트랜스듀서(1)의 정합층은 제1 물질로 구성된 제1층과, 제1 물질과는 다른 임피던스 값을 가지는 제2 물질로 구성된 제2층과, 제1층과 제2층 사이에 형성되고 제1 물질과 제2 물질을 결합하여 제1 층과 제2 층 간 음향 임피던스 변화 폭을 줄이는 제3층을 포함한다. 나아가, 초음파 트랜스듀서(1)는 제2 물질로 구성된 제2층과 음향렌즈 사이에 형성되어, 제2 물질과 음향렌즈의 물질을 결합하여 제2층과 음향렌즈 간 음향 임피던스 변화 폭을 줄이는 제4층을 포함한다.
다른 실시 예에 따른 초음파 트랜스듀서(1)는 적어도 2층 구조의 정합층과, 정합층의 전면에 형성되는 음향렌즈를 포함한다. 이때, 정합층은 제1 물질로 구성된 제1층과, 제1층과 음향렌즈 사이에 형성되고 제1 물질과 음향렌즈의 물질을 결합하여 제1 층과 음향렌즈 간 음향 임피던스 변화 폭을 줄이는 제2층을 포함한다.
빔포밍부(2)는 초음파 트랜스듀서(1)를 구동하여 초음파 신호를 피검사체에 송신하고 피검사체로부터 되돌아오는 반사신호를 처리하여 빔 신호를 생성한다. 영상 처리부(3)는 빔포밍부(2)로부터 빔 신호를 수신하여 초음파 영상을 생성한다. 출력부(4)는 영상 처리부(3)를 통해 생성된 초음파 영상을 외부로 디스플레이한다.
도 10은 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 따른 초음파 트랜스듀서 제조방법을 도시한 흐름도이고, 도 11은 도 10의 초음파 트랜스듀서 제조방법에 따른 IML 제조 형태를 보여주는 참조도이다.
도 10 및 도 11을 참조하면, 제1 물질을 대상으로 연마 공정 등을 통해 소정의 두께를 갖는 시트(sheet) 형상의 ML1(1100)을 생성한다(1000). 그리고, 다이싱(dicing) 등의 가공을 통해 ML1(1100)에 다수의 홈을 가공함에 따라 다수의 홈이 형성된 ML1(1110)을 생성한다(1010).
이어서, 다수의 홈이 생성된 ML1(1110)의 홈에 제2 물질을 부어 채워 제1 물질과 제2 물질이 결합한 IML1을 형성한다(1020). 그리고, IML1에 제2 물질을 더 적재하고, 연마 공정 등을 통해 그 두께를 조절하여, IML1 위에 제2 물질로 구성된 ML2를 형성한다(1030). 이에 따라, 제1 물질로 구성된 ML1(1120) 위에, 제1 물질과 제2 물질이 결합한 IML1(1130)과, IML1(1130) 위에 제2 물질로 구성된 ML2(1140)가 형성되게 된다.
이어서, 새로운 IML과 ML을 추가하기 위해서 전술한 과정은 반복될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 제2 물질로 구성된 ML2(1140)에 다이싱(dicing) 등의 가공을 통해 다수의 홈을 가공하고, 다수의 홈이 가공된 ML2의 홈에 제3 물질을 부어 채운다. 그리고, 그 위에 제3 물질을 더 적재하고 연마 공정 등을 통해 그 두께를 조절한다. 이에 따라, 제2 물질과 제3 물질이 결합한 IML2와, 그 위에 제3 물질로 구성된 ML3이 추가로 형성된다.
한편, 새로운 IML과 음향렌즈를 추가하기 위해서 전술한 과정은 반복될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 제2 물질로 구성된 ML2(1140)에 다이싱(dicing) 등의 가공을 통해 다수의 홈을 가공하고, 다수의 홈이 가공된 ML2의 홈에 음향렌즈 물질을 부어 채워 제2 물질과 음향렌즈 물질이 결합한 IML2를 형성한다. 그리고, IML2 위에 음향 렌즈 물질을 더 적재하고 그 두께 및 형태를 음향렌즈의 형태에 맞게 조절함에 따라, IML2 위에 음향렌즈가 추가로 형성된다.
일반적으로 중심 주파수가 높은 초음파 트랜스듀서의 경우 정합층의 두께가 얇아지기 때문에 제작이 어렵다. 그러나, 본 발명의 IML은 전술한 프로세스에 의해 그 두께가 전체적으로 두꺼워지므로 제작이 용이하다.
도 12 및 도 13은 본 발명의 일 실시 예에 따른 정합층을 가진 초음파 트랜스듀서와 일반적인 초음파 트랜스듀서의 성능 차이를 보여주는 그래프이다.
도 12 및 도 13을 참조하면, 능동소자에서 발생한 초음파가 본 발명의 음향 임피던스 변화 폭이 작은 IML을 통해 피검사체로 전달되는 경우 초음파 트랜스듀서의 감도(sensitivity) 및 대역폭(bandwidth)이 향상됨을 확인할 수 있다.
세부적으로, 도 12는 일반적인 초음파 트랜스듀서와 본 발명의 IML을 포함하는 초음파 트랜스듀서의 시간(times)에 대한 전압(voltage) 크기를 비교한 그래프이다. 도 12에 도시된 바와 같이, 본 발명의 초음파 트랜스듀서가 동일 시간대에서 더 큰 전압 변화를 가짐을 확인할 수 있다.
도 13은 일반적인 초음파 트랜스듀서와 본 발명의 IML을 포함하는 초음파 트랜스듀서의 주파수(frequency)에 대한 정규 크기(normalize magnitude)를 비교한 그래프이다. 도 13에 도시된 바와 같이, 본 발명의 초음파 트랜스듀서의 경우 더 넓은 범위에서 정규 크기가 크게 나타남을 알 수 있다. 이에 따라, 본 발명의 IML을 포함하는 초음파 트랜스듀서는 대역폭이 넓어지고, 감도가 향상된다.
이제까지 본 발명에 대하여 그 실시 예들을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 본 발명이 속하는 기술분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자는 본 발명이 본 발명의 본질적인 특성에서 벗어나지 않는 범위에서 변형된 형태로 구현될 수 있음을 이해할 수 있을 것이다. 그러므로 개시된 실시 예들은 한정적인 관점이 아니라 설명적인 관점에서 고려되어야 한다. 본 발명의 범위는 전술한 설명이 아니라 특허청구범위에 나타나 있으며, 그와 동등한 범위 내에 있는 모든 차이점은 본 발명에 포함된 것으로 해석되어야 할 것이다.

- 적어도 하나의 압전소자를 포함하는 능동소자; 및상기 능동소자의 전면에 형성되어 상기 능동소자와 피검사체 간의 음향 임피던스를 정합하는 적어도 2층 구조의 정합층; 을 포함하며,상기 정합층은 능동소자와 피검사체 간의 음향 임피던스를 정합하기 위하여 N개의 물질(N≥2인 정수)을 이용해서 각각 서로 다른 음향 임피던스 크기를 가지는 2N개의 층을 구성하는 것을 특징으로 하는 초음파 트랜스듀서.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 정합층은제1 임피던스 값을 가지는 제1 물질로 구성된 제1층;제2 임피던스 값을 가지는 제2 물질로 구성된 제2층; 및제1층과 제2층 사이에 형성되고, 제1 물질과 제2 물질을 결합하여 제1층 및 제2층 간 음향 임피던스 변화 폭을 줄이는 제3층;을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 초음파 트랜스듀서.

- 제 2 항에 있어서, 상기 제3층은음향 임피던스의 변화 폭을 고려하여 제1 물질과 제2 물질 간의 간격, 제1 물질과 제2 물질의 너비 및 층의 두께 중 적어도 하나가 조절되는 것을 특징으로 하는 초음파 트랜스듀서.
- 제 2 항에 있어서, 상기 제3층은제1 물질과 제2 물질이 교대로 톱니 형태로 배열되는 것을 특징으로 하는 초음파 트랜스듀서.
- 제 2 항에 있어서, 상기 제3층은제1 물질과 제2 물질이 다면체, 원형, 뿔 형, 기둥 형 중 어느 하나의 형태를 가지는 것을 특징으로 하는 초음파 트랜스듀서.
- 제 3 항에 있어서, 상기 제4층은음향 임피던스의 변화 폭을 고려하여 제2 물질과 음향렌즈 물질 간의 간격, 제2 물질과 음향렌즈 물질의 너비 및 층의 두께 중 적어도 하나가 조절되는 것을 특징으로 하는 초음파 트랜스듀서.
- 제 3 항에 있어서, 상기 제4층은제2 물질과 음향렌즈 물질이 교대로 톱니 형태로 배열되는 것을 특징으로 하는 초음파 트랜스듀서.
- 제 3 항에 있어서, 상기 제4층은제2 물질과 음향렌즈 물질이 다면체, 원형, 뿔 형, 기둥 형 중 어느 하나의 형태를 가지는 것을 특징으로 하는 초음파 트랜스듀서.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 정합층은층 간에 단계적이되 불연속적으로 음향 임피던스 변화폭이 변화하는 것을 특징으로 하는 초음파 트랜스듀서.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 정합층은하위 층의 음향 임피던스 값은 상위 층의 음향 임피던스 값보다 큰 것을 특징으로 하는 초음파 트랜스듀서.
- 적어도 2층 구조의 정합층; 및상기 정합층의 전면에 형성되는 음향렌즈; 를 포함하며,상기 정합층은제1 물질로 구성된 제1층; 및제1층과 음향렌즈 사이에 형성되고, 제1 물질과 음향렌즈의 물질을 결합하여 제1층 및 음향렌즈 간 음향 임피던스 변화 폭을 줄이는 제2층;을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 초음파 트랜스듀서.
- 초음파 트랜스듀서 제조방법에 있어서, 상기 초음파 트랜스듀서 제조방법은복합 구조의 정합층을 제조하는 단계; 를 포함하며,상기 정합층을 제조하는 단계는제1 물질로 구성된 제1층이 형성되는 단계;상기 제1층에 다수의 홈이 가공되는 단계;상기 제1층의 홈에 제2 물질이 부어 채워져 제1 물질과 제2 물질이 결합한 제2층이 형성되는 단계; 및상기 제2층에 제2 물질이 적재되고 그 두께가 조절됨에 따라 제2층 위에 제2 물질로 구성된 제3층이 형성되는 단계;를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 초음파 트랜스듀서 제조방법.
- 제 13 항에 있어서, 상기 정합층을 제조하는 단계는상기 제2 물질로 구성된 제3층에 다수의 홈이 가공되는 단계; 및상기 제3층의 홈에 음향렌즈 물질이 부어 채워져 제2 물질과 음향렌즈 물질이 결합한 제4층이 형성되는 단계; 를 더 포함하며,상기 초음파 트랜스듀서 제조방법은상기 제4층에 음향렌즈 물질이 적재되고 그 두께 및 형태가 조절됨에 따라 제4층 위에 음향렌즈가 형성되는 단계; 를 더 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 초음파 트랜스듀서 제조방법.
- 제 13 항에 있어서, 상기 정합층을 제조하는 단계는상기 제2 물질로 구성된 제3층에 다수의 홈이 가공되는 단계;상기 제3층의 홈에 제3 물질이 부어 채워져 제2 물질과 제3 물질이 결합한 제4층이 형성되는 단계; 및상기 제4층에 제3 물질이 적재되고 그 두께가 조절됨에 따라 제4층 위에 제3 물질로 구성된 제5층이 형성되는 단계;를 더 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 초음파 트랜스듀서 제조방법.
