Description
The present invention relates to a laundry machine comprising a front door handle having an improved mounting mechanism.
Laundry machines such as for instance washing machines, drying machines and combo washing/drying machines comprise a rotary drum in which cloth items are placeable and accessible via a front door and a motor providing the rotary drum to be driven by means of a pulley mechanism, or alternatively, a direct driving system can be employed. In short, laundry machines have front doors typically allowing access into the rotatable drum for loading and unloading the laundry to be processed.
A front door opening mechanism typically functions in the manner that a handle associated with a handle lever is rotatable to drive a hook lever, the latter being actuated to lock or unlock the front door. The mounting of the handle is accomplished via connecting an inner handle element and an outer handle element to each other around an outer frame -which typically constitutes the outer part of the front door- like a sandwich.
The above-described mechanical handle structure can be designed so as to make use of various connection elements in different structural forms, which may substantially affect mounting efficiency of a laundry machine as well as the perceived build quality of the front door and therefore the laundry machine itself on the part of end-users.
An outer handle element of the handle can be mounted on the outer surface of the front door’s outer frame by means of different connection structures. The outer handle element is the visible outer portion and a non-uniform and asymmetrical positioning thereof in terms of the relative levels with the neighboring outer frame portions which might progressively deteriorate as the machine ages, may create a low quality impression on the part of end-users. This non-uniformity effect is overcome by installation of the handle’s outer handle element in an interengaged manner with an inner portion of the outer frame.
Therefore, a more efficient manner of providing a rigid mounting mechanism with an improved internal structure of cooperating involved components is desirable so that the handle of the laundry machine can be mounted in a sturdy manner with a better quality in terms of the relative levels with the neighboring outer frame portions.
The present invention therefore proposes a laundry machine with an alternative, strengthened mechanical structure to obtain a front door handle mounting mechanism in a laundry machine.
A prior art publication in the technical field of the present invention may be referred to as US2013232810 among others, the document disclosing a laundry appliance provided with a door mounted to a cabinet of the appliance. The door has a handle that is defined by a recess in a sidewall of the door. The handle can be positioned on the door such that the door is suitable for use on either a washing machine appliance or a dryer appliance.
The present invention provides a laundry machine in which a handle mounting mechanism is obtainable with a strengthened mechanical structure as defined by the characterizing features in Claim 1 and subsequent Claims.
Primary object of the present invention is hence to provide a laundry machine having a strengthened and practically mountable mechanical structure in the front door handle mechanism of the laundry machine.
The present invention proposes a laundry machine with a front door having an outer frame and an inner frame joined one another. The outer frame has a handle engagement portion on which an outer handle element and an inner handle element with a supplementary inner handle element are joined together.
The supplementary inner handle element is a component that provides convenience in the manufacturing process and also in the supply chain procedures due to the flexibility it provides when determining the color of the visible part of the inner handle element so to be in combination with other parts of the front door to complete the outer frame aesthetically.
The connection means preferably provided as four individual members projecting from the outer handle element extend to connection means holes positioned on the inner handle element.
A retaining means extends at both sides of the inner handle element such that it engages with an outer frame locking extension of the outer frame at both sides of the handle engagement portion along which the outer and inner handle elements are mounted. Engagement of the retaining means with the neighboring outer frame locking extension in the manner to protrude outwardly in the direction along the peripheral line of the handle engagement portion prevents vertical out-of-plane displacement of the outer handle element in the long run, which would cause removal of the same from the handle engagement portion. The engaged position of the retaining means is supported by the retaining means support such that it applies a supporting force to the retaining means in the direction of the outer frame locking extension whereby horizontal displacement of the retaining means is prevented.
The mechanism of the present invention therefore provides a solution for the out-of-plane displacement problem of the outer handle element encountered during the manufacturing process as well as by end-users. The problem related with the removal of the handle during mounting and later on is therefore overcome and the surface of the outer frame is provided with a flush and more aesthetical structure as well a robust handle mechanism.

The present invention relates to a laundry machine (1) comprising a rotary drum, in which the laundry is to be placed and an electric motor rotating the drum. A front door (2) typically allows access into the drum for loading or unloading laundry through an access opening (3). The front door (2) of the laundry machine (1) is conventionally opened by way of using a handle (4) which is mounted to an outer frame (5). The handle (4) consists of an outer handle element (8), an inner handle element (9) and a supplementary inner handle element (15), which are all interconnected to form the handle (4) being operatively secured to the outer frame (5). The outer frame (5) is positioned between the outer handle element (8) and the inner handle element (9) while a handle engagement portion (7) thereof is interposed between the two parts of the handle (4).
The outer handle element (8) has connection means (11) and retaining means (10) as will be delineated hereinafter. The connection means (11) are longitudinal elements integral to the outer handle element (8) and which pass through respective openings of the outer frame (5) reaching to the inner handle element (9), the latter also having respective openings, i.e. connection means holes (13). The connection means (11) therefore serve for housing individual connection elements such as screws passing through the connection means (11). Additionally, the connection means (11) also provide that the outer handle element (8) is conveniently installable as a plurality of connection means (11) are symmetrically disposed along the peripheral line of the outer handle element (8) in an equally spaced manner, each connection means (11) cooperating with a respective opening of the outer frame (5) and a respective connection means hole (13), therefore providing an ease of positioning and guiding when joining interconnected components.
A retaining means support (12) projects at both sides of the inner handle element (9) such that the retaining means (10) of the outer handle element (8) at both sides of the handle engagement portion (7) along which the outer and inner handle elements (8, 9) are mounted, engage with an outer frame locking extension (14) of the outer frame (5) in the manner to be supported by the retaining means supports (12). Engagement of the retaining means (10) with the neighboring outer frame locking extension (14) in the manner to protrude outwardly in the direction along the peripheral line of the handle engagement portion (7) prevents vertical displacement of the outer handle element (8) out of the plane of the outer frame (5), which would cause removal of the same from the handle engagement portion. The engaged position of the retaining means (10) is supported by the retaining means support (12) such that it applies a supporting force to the retaining means (10) in the direction of the outer frame locking extension (14) whereby horizontal displacement of the retaining means (10) is prevented.
In a nutshell, the present invention proposes a laundry machine (1) comprising a rotary drum, in which the laundry is to be placed, an electric motor rotating the rotary drum and a front door (2) allowing access into the rotary drum for loading or unloading laundry through an access opening (3), the front door (2) having an outer frame (5) and an inner frame (6), the laundry machine (1) further comprising a handle (4) mounted to the outer frame (5) to effect locking and unlocking of the front door (1).
In one embodiment of the present invention, an outer handle element (8) and an inner handle element (9) of the handle (4) are interconnected to each other in the manner that a handle engagement portion (7) of the outer frame (5) is interposed between the outer handle element (8) and the inner handle element (9), the handle engagement portion (7) effectuating interconnection of the outer handle element (8) with the inner handle element (9) so as to fixedly secure the outer frame (5) thereinbetween.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the outer handle element (8) comprises at least two connection means (11) passing through the outer frame (5) and reaching to the inner handle element (9) effecting interconnection of the same with the outer frame (5).
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the connection means (11) reach to the inner handle element (9) through connection means holes (13) thereof whereby the inner handle element (9) is operatively connected to the outer frame (5).
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the connection means (11) in the form of hollow longitudinal elements integral to the outer handle element (8) house individual connection elements passing therethrough.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the connection means (11) are symmetrically disposed along the peripheral line of the outer handle element (8). Equally spaced and evenly distributed of the connection means (11) along both peripheral halves along the perimeter of the handle engagement portion (7) enhances the guiding and easy mounting effect.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the outer handle element (8) has retaining means (10) extending at both sides of the handle engagement portion (7) along which the outer and inner handle elements (8, 9) are mounted, the retaining means (10) engaging with an outer frame locking extension (14) of the outer frame (5). This configuration prevents vertical out-of-plane displacement of the outer handle element (8).
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the retaining means (10) engage with the outer frame locking extension (14) of the outer frame (5) in the manner to be supported by retaining means supports (12) projecting at both sides of the inner handle element (9).
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the retaining means (10) engage with the outer frame locking extension (14) in the manner to protrude outwardly in the direction along the peripheral line of the handle engagement portion (7).
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the retaining means support (12) applies a supporting force to the retaining means (10) in the direction of the outer frame locking extension (14). Therefore, the engaged position of the retaining means is supported by the retaining means support such that horizontal displacement thereof is prevented.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, a supplementary inner handle element (15) is provided to at least partially cover the inner handle element (9) in the opposite direction of the outer frame (5). The fact that the supplementary inner handle element (15) is an individually removable component is advantageous in that the manufacturer is able to modify the physical appearance and particularly the color of this individual component depending on the product model as it constitutes the visible part of the inner handle element.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the laundry machine (1) is a laundry drying machine.
The mechanism of the present invention therefore provides a solution for the out-of-plane displacement problem of the outer handle element (8) encountered during the manufacturing process as well as by end-users. The surface of the outer frame (5) is provided with a flush and more aesthetical structure as well a robust handle mechanism.
