Definitions
- the present inventions relate generally to wireless communications. In particular, they relate to improvements in small cell antenna systems and other communications equipment deployment enclosures.
- Small cells are becoming more popular in wireless mobile communications. In contrast to macro cells, which have antennas located high above the ground and often out of sight at street level, small cells are typically mounted much lower to the ground and in view. Small cells are compact and discrete mobile phone base stations, unobtrusively located in urban areas. They may be mounted on lampposts, positioned on the sides of buildings or found indoors in stadiums, transport hubs and other public areas. They provide excellent mobile phone service, delivering very high data speeds and capacity, solving the problem of growing data traffic demand cost effectively. These small cells are usually owned and installed by the mobile network operator themselves, who plan, manage and maintain them in the same way as their larger macro cell cousins.
- small cell equipment is often located within aesthetic enclosures.
- the equipment may comprise radios, power supplies, wireless access antennas, backhaul antennas, and the like. These may be combined in a single enclosure or located in separate enclosures.
- Small cell antenna and/or equipment enclosures may include rear projection from inside of the antenna/equipment using DLP (or pico DLP) projectors and using a concealment enclosure or radome as a screen.
- the equipment enclosure may be fitted with an E ink bendable (flexible) display.
- An audio speaker may be included for public announcements.
- the decorative, informative and advertisement (multimedia) content may be stored in media storage card and driven to a projector/E Ink display controller using a multimedia chipset.
- the media card can also be updated using Wi-Fi /Bluetooth as another option.
- a wireless network operator may benefit from such displays by providing enhanced appearance of the enclosure, promotions for their products and services, leasing space to rent to other companies for advertising, providing public service announcements on behalf of governmental entities, etc.

- Figure 2 is a top view of the tri-sector antenna according to the first example of the present invention.
- Figure 3 illustrates another embodiment of the tri-sector antenna according to the present invention.
- Figure 4 is a top view of an embodiment of the tri-sector antenna of Figure 3 adapted for use in the first example.
- Figure 5 is a block diagram of a DLP projection system adapted for use in the first example of the present invention.
- Figure 6 is a block diagram of an E-link Display System adapted for use in the first example of the present invention.
- a tri-sector antenna 10 is mounted on a pole 12.
- the tri- sector antenna 10 includes a projection area 14 on an enclosure 16.
- the tri- sector antenna 10 is illustrated from a top view.
- Three antennas 18 are oriented to serve three 120° sectors.
- a projector 20 is mounted within the enclosure 16 and oriented to project onto projection area 14 (display surface). Power may be provided by cable, bias tee or using solar power.
- the projection area 14 is comprised of material suitable for rear screen projection.
- the projector 20 may comprise for example, a DLP Projector. In some
- DLP Digital Light Projector
- DMD Digital Micro mirror Device
- Each mirror represents one or more pixels in the projected image.
- the DLP chip is a highly sophisticated light switch. It contains a rectangular array of (e.g. 8 million) hinge-mounted microscopic mirrors; each of these micro mirrors can be less than one- fifth the width of a human hair.
- a DLP projection system 50 is illustrated in Figure 5.
- a MMC Card 52 may be used to store multi-media content.
- a Multimedia chip 54 reads data from the MMC Card 52, and sends video, still images, and/or sound to a DLP processor 56.
- the DLP Processor 56 formats images for a DLP Projector.
- the DLP Projector may then render the image on the projection area 14.
- Advantages of this technology includes that it is, light source agnostic (LED, Laser), has low power consumption in the order of few watts ( ⁇ 5Watts), has very high resolution and very low maintenance.
- Pico DLP chips are used in mobile phones and can consume much less power. DLP is resistant to dust, contains no moving part and runs for 30000 hours with no regular maintenance.
- the projection area 14 may be replaced with flexible display surface 32.
- the display surface 32 may comprise an E- ink surface or the like.
- the E-Ink surface may cover the entire outer surface or major portion of the outer surface of the enclosure 16 (e.g. substantially all the publically visible surfaces).
- Electronic ink is made up of millions of tiny microcapsules, about the diameter of a human hair. Each microcapsule contains positively charged white particles and negatively charged black particles suspended in a clear fluid. When a positive or negative electric field is applied, corresponding particles move to the top of the microcapsule where they become visible to the viewer. This makes the surface appear white or black at that spot.
- the display is available in monochrome or color.
- E-Ink displays made out of plastic TFT may be used. Advantages of E-Ink display include, no power consumption once displayed, clear images in broad day light, less weight, and ruggedness. In this case, a graphics engine 34 (display engine) will still be located within the enclosure 16 to drive the display surface 32.
- FIG. 6 illustrates a block diagram of an E-Ink display system 60 including a MMC Card 52 to store content.
- a multimedia chip 54 reads data from the MMC Card 52, sends the data to the E-Ink processor 62 which processes and formats the data drive to the E-Ink display 32 to display images on the display surface 32.
- this communications system enclosure in addition to providing an esthetically pleasing enclosure surface appearance, can also be used for: Map interactive (GPS); Advertisement; Local news, attraction; Language - translation; Voice activation with multimedia; Entertainment; Games; Sports; Breaking News; Air pollution; Emergency Announcements; Education, etc.
- Content may be updated in several ways, the MMC card 52 may be changed. Additionally, there may be wireless and /or wired data link 58 to provide remote access to the MMC card 52. For example, a WiFi access point or Bluetooth access 58 may be included.
- the invention is not limited to antenna enclosures. Small cell sites often have separate enclosures for communications equipment such as Remote Radio Heads, backhaul termination, power modules, etc..
- the DLP projection system 50 and/or E-Ink display system 60 may be included with such equipment as well.
