Description

MANAGEMENT SYTEM FOR PAYMENT BY CHEQUE AND A METHOD THEREOF
Field of the Art
The invention relates to a cheque onto which a QR code, barcode or any code recognisable by being read with a mobile device in such a manner that its operation with today's mobile communications technology is enabled in order to increase the reliability of cheques which are of non-cash payment systems, and a system enabling the safe managing of processes such as writing, drawing, cashing or converting said cheque into credit, and a method concerning the operation of this system.
More specifically the present invention relates to a payment system by a coded cheque which enables the management of transactions from the printing of a unique QR code, barcode or any code which can be recognised by being read with a mobile device and throughout the life cycle of the cheque to render paying by cheque, which is currently used as an alternative to cash, yet causes trust issues between parties during a business transaction as it is subjected to malicious amendments and practices, safer, and a method for the operation of said system.
State of the Art
Many methods enabling the non-cash money flow have come until today due to safety reasons and issues that may occur in the transfer of bank notes or coins. One of the most important thereof are cheques. As the current payment by cheque method enables the cheque holder to pay a desired amount of money, whenever, without having to go to a bank to the bearer when they wish, it offers great convenience to both the holder (drawer) and the creditor (bearer). However, due to many security issues such as whether the cheque holder possesses an actual cash equivalent in their bank account relative to the cheque, the report relative to previous period of the cheque holder i.e. their reliability and whether the cheque writer is the actual cheque holder, i.e. the difficulty of determining the authenticity of a cheque in everyday life, a need for the current cheque system to be supported with a more reliable technological foundation has emerged. In the European Patent Application No. EP2525317 a method for conducting payments to be made between two mobile terminals and a relative apparatus is disclosed. In the disclosed method, the process steps of determining the amount to be paid through a user interface located in a first mobile terminal, the user being authorised for the transactions, registering the amount to be paid via a mobile network onto the reference agency, sending it to the user interface by generating a QR coded message containing information concerning the process being registered.
Many techniques been tried to improve to increase the reliability of financial papers such as money, cheques, etc. These techniques are found in computing solutions such as magnetic ink character recognition, optical character recognition and intelligent character recognition, as well as in physical methods such as ultraviolet light sensitive ink and microprinting techniques. These known techniques are regarded as being effective in increasing the reliability of said financial papers. However, the cheque bearer not being able to immediately access safety information as they desire after being given a cheque from trade with a cheque by providing goods and services, and there still being security vulnerabilities in accessed information appear as major obstacles in front of the widespreading of the use of said financial means. Patent Application No. US20090261 158 discloses a method for authenticating cheques and the like. Herein, the value based tokens (VBT; Value-BasedToken) generated by a core system are encoded onto the cheque and this unique VBT prevents the cheque from being amended maliciously. The core system comprises a database on which information concerning said VBTs is stored, and is responsible for the generation of VBTs.
Nowadays, many bank account holders engaging in trade carry cheques and cheque books to manage the cash flow in their business lives. Even though this situation is more practical and flexible than carrying cash, as it requires the management of many transactions between the bank and the customer, the drawer and the bearer, and various endorsers and banks during the life cycle of the cheque, it comprises many procedures compared to the trade made between cash or credit card. Also, possible amendments that can be made by malicious persons during the life cycle of the cheque or the person cashing the cheque and thus the reliability of the cheque cause the traders providing the goods and services equivalent of the cheque to suffer losses. Apart from this, whether the due cheque is actually of the stated worth at the bank leaves a question mark in the mind of the trader having the cheque of their customer, thus hindering safe trade. International Patent Application No. WO2012104872 discloses a method and system for generating an electronic cheque. The said electronic cheque (e-cheque) transaction system comprises an computing device regarding the payer, a central database, a mobile device regarding the payee and an computing device regarding the bank of the payee. For generating an electronic cheque the payer enters information such as the payer's name, account number, transaction amount and date in the e-cheque generation wizard of the online banking portal. Thee computing device transmits a request to generate an e-cheque along with said information to the server. The server encrypts the transaction information and encodes a unique authorisation identifier in a matrix barcode based on the transaction information provided by the payer. The server may encrypt the said cheque number and the unique authorisation identifier in the QR code.
Despite additional safety and practical solutions developed concerning cheques to date, the need for a system which can monitor all past transactions from the generation of the cheque until its withdrawal, i.e. conversion into cash with a safe computing infrastructure has increased the development of the present invention.
Object of the Invention and Brief Description of the Invention The object of the invention is to provide a management system for payment by cheque, which enables a high level of protection of confidentiality for the bank customer cashing a cheque and the cheque bearer, and provides a QR code, barcode or any code which can be recognised by being read with a mobile device, that enables all parties bearing the cheque to securely develop commercial cooperation by clearing all possible security vulnerabilities throughout the life cycle of the cheque to be cashed until its withdrawal.
Another object of the invention is to provide a management method for payment by cheque having a secure QR code, barcode or any code which can be recognised by being read with a mobile device, generating a unique code acquired from a central server, enabling a bank customer to generate a cheque based on information provided by a central server or hardware such as a credit reference agency in order to prevent cheque or valuable paper fraudulence such as them being counterfeit, invalid or dishonoured, and encoding the unique code as a QR code onto the cheque, thus the processes of query, consent and obtaining related to the cheque of both the drawer and the bearer can be carried out practically and quickly with a computing device on which a camera is connected, especially with mobile phones having an integrated camera used in today's technology. Detailed Description of the Invention The present invention comprises a system for payment by cheque (10) encoded with a QR (QuickResponse) code (20), barcode or any code recognisable by being read with a mobile device and a method in which the transaction between system elements is carried out for the system to be executed. Nowadays, QR codes (20) are widely used in many fields. The reasons thereof are that QR codes (20) are difficult to counterfeit and that they are easily readable with cameras of mobile devices. However, the system of the invention is not limited to the code type of the present invention as it is suitable for printing another type of code having the same object, i.e. a barcode or another type of code which can easily be read with the cameras of mobile devices. For subject oriented reasons, the present invention will be described based on the QR code (20). Figure 1 shows a representative QR coded (20) cheque (10) and a mobile phone (30) on which the said QR code (20) is read.
Being a means of modern technology, camera integrated mobile devices (30) are considerably common. Smartphones being one thereof, which can carry out simple application programmes, are widely used among users in many fields. However, the said invention is not limited to mobile phones and may be a computing device capable of connecting to any camera or QR code reading device and exchanging data by connecting to servers of related establishments through the internet. Apart from portable computers, these may be desktop computer hardware capable of reading QR codes (20) by connecting to the internet and transferring them, and carrying out programmes.
However, examples which focus on smart mobile phones (30) having at least one camera capable of scanning a QR code (20) and providing access to the internet infrastructure and servers by using GSM and other wireless communications technologies via processing mobile application (35) programmes will be given for the invention to be understood better and be used more widely.
The system of the invention, seen in Figure 1 , provides convenience for not only the cheque (10) owner (drawer) and the bearer benefiting from the cheque (10), i.e. the person to be paid for providing goods and service in exchange for the cheque, but also the banks providing various services based on the cheque (10) by generating the cheque (10), throughout the course of life of the cheque (10) having a printed QR code (20), from it's generation until it's termination.
In the system of the invention, the computing device, being a stationary client or server in the bank to provide communication and transactions between the bank and the central server as the bank is an important party, will be referred to as the bank client (100). The aforementioned bank client (100) is a server or client/server computer capable of securely communicating with another central server through the present communications and internet infrastructures, and capable of receiving and sending information regarding cheque customers from the aforementioned server. Whereas, apart from the aforementioned bank client (100), the Credit Reference Agency server (110) is a secure server capable of accessing the mobile device (30) of the customer applying for a cheque, providing an interface service (web service) via the internet for access to the customer's KKB server (1 10), and communicating with customers having means for mobile communication such as SMS, audible notifications, as well as e-mail. Compared to others, banks using the system of the invention will gain a competitive advantage as well as improving their innovative methods as they will be securely using modern technology. Apart from these, banks using the system of the invention will provide a lot of trust for their depositors and be able to increase their financial abilities with the widespreading of the use of cheques as the swift and secure management of lost or stolen items, preventing fraudulence with checking signatures, the risk management of cheque responsibility is possible.
A central server or more specifically Credit Reference Agency (will be shortly referred to as KKB) server (1 10) is present all across to centrally record all coded cheques (10) for the system management of the invention. The aforementioned credit reference agency (KKB) server (110) determines the QR code (20) standards, carries out the third party report delivery process, provides the consent and system membership infrastructures and views reports by checking these, and provides systems for inquiring and viewing signatures. Also, the banks are in an important position in the system of the invention. They are responsible for providing integration into the membership and consent record system, updating the processes of cheque provision and printing, preparing the acquisition infrastructure and contracts, providing an infrastructure for the transfer of viewing signatures, and providing the infrastructure necessary for the course of provision. Apart from these, insurance companies may securely benefit from the system of the invention. The insurance company insures the cheque and thus, provides the computing infrastructure to be integrated into the system.
Figure 2 shows the process steps regarding the generation of the cheque (10) in the management system for payment by QR coded cheque. The customer with a bank account suitable for cheque payments applies for a cheque (10) at their bank (200). After examining their customer according to various criteria, the bank decides whether they should generate a QR coded cheque (10) for the customer (210). After the said decision (210), the customer is offered to be given a QR coded cheque (10) in accordance with the terms that the bank determines (215). If the customer accepts it (220), a cheque number containing the information of the customer and the bank and a QR code (20) is produced (225), thus the printing of the cheque is carried out (230). The printed cheque (10) is handed (240) at the bank by inviting the customer to the bank. The customer gets to sign an Electronic Reporting System (ERS) membership contract and a consent document bound to the cheque number (245) in order to form a legal ground regarding the cheque and to legally bind the parties. As the signing of the aforementioned documents (245) may be carried out physically at the bank, this can also be done remotely with electronic methods such as legally approved digital signatures. The network service (ws) is requested for the electronic reporting system membership registration control (250).
The Credit Reference Agency (KBB) (110) checks whether the customer is a current member (255). If determined that the customer is not a current member, the KKB (1 10) transfers the application identity (ID) information to the bank and requests details for the said membership application (260). The required information for membership is entered into the system by the bank (100) and the network service (ws; web service) is requested (270). After obtaining the expected data from the bank (100), the KKB server (110) carries out the membership registration. If determined that the customer is already a current member by the KKB (1 10), these steps are skipped and only the member's identity (ID) information is transferred to the bank client (100) (265). In this case the bank client (100) sends a consent record to the KKB server (110) for the membership identity (ID) and cheque numbers of the relative member (275). After completing a consent record for the relative cheque numbers by the KKB server (110), the cheque application process is finalised (290).
Querying about the cheque by a bearer in the system of the invention can be described with the process diagram of report management in Figure 3. The bearer starts the Credit Reference Agency (110) mobile application on a mobile smartphone device (30) and reads the QR code (20) on the cheque (10) with the guidance of the application (310). The read QR code (20) is transmitted to the KKB (110) system with mobile communications or other wired/wireless communications infrastructures by the mobile application (35). The number from the system is checked by the KKB (110) (320).
Subsequently, the consent for the cheque number of the bearer is checked as well (330). If determined that there is no consent, an error message is sent notifying this situation to the device (30) which has read the bearer's cheque's QR code (30) (350). After determining the consent is present, the cheque is controlled as to whether it is suitable for withdrawal (340). In the case that it is not, once again an error message notifying the situation is sent (350). If it is determined to be suitable for withdrawal as well, a report is generated (360) and this situation is notified to both the bearer and the drawer with a report (370, 380).
The drawer's provision processes with the system of the invention are summarised in the process diagram in Figure 4. Herein, the drawer begins the process by starting the KBB (110) mobile application with a smartphone, mobile device (30) or computer and selecting the "Request acquisition" option on the application (35) screen (410). The QR code (20) on the cheque is read with a camera bound to a device by the drawer with the guidance of the application (35) (420). The due date of the cheque is registered to the system and the information regarding the sum of the cheque is sent to the bank (100) (430). As a result of the information having reached the drawer's bank (100) through the system, the transaction begins by the bank (100) and this information is evaluated (440). Whether the transaction has been approved is checked (450). If the transaction is approved by the bank (100), the drawer is informed (460) by the KKB (110) and the acquisition regarding the cheque is registered into the system (470). If the transaction is not approved, the report delivery information is provided an thus, the transaction is terminated (480). Figure 5 shows a representative block diagram summarising the transaction between the Credit Reference Agency (110) and the bank (100) providing cheque services regarding the system of the invention. Upon a cheque application of a bank's (100) customer (501), the bank (100) checks if the customer is a member of the electronic reporting system (ERS) and completes the required registration processes for the membership and creates a consent record (502). If the cheque applications approved by the bank (100) come back positive, the bank (100) prints the QR coded cheque (503). The credit reference agency (1 10) provides a report to the parties after exchanging data with the bank (100) when a report is requested through cashing a printed cheque or reading the QR code (20) thereon with a mobile device (30) by being used in trade (504). The report query (505) is transmitted through the internet to KKB (110) by the QR code (20) via being read with a mobile device (30) and communications means through being interpreted with the mobile application (35) (505). KKB (110) withdraws a fee for the requested report (506). The handing of the prepared report and the checking of the signature is carried out (507), and the bank commission is separated from the withdrawn amount (508). The bank arranges a commission receipt for the provided service for the bank (100) report to be created (509) and the payment to the bank (100) is completed. In the management method for payment by cheque of the invention, after the bank's (100) customer has applied for a cheque (205), a cheque book is printed (230) by the bank (100) when the production of the cheque book is appropriate (210) as a result of evaluations by the bank (100). As the printed check book is being handed to the customer (240), apart from the membership agreement, the bank (100) also gets the customer to sign a consent form regarding that the given personal information may be shared if the customer's cheque (10) is cashed (245). Thus, it may be possible for some details concerning the cheque and drawer to be shared with the cheque bearer or other parties as a result of a QR code, barcode or cheque number being read with a mobile device (30). A customer having signed a consent form will then receive a cheque book from the bank (100) (240).
Additionally, the information of the drawer may be queried on the aforementioned mobile application (35) or internet branch of the credit reference agency (110) by reading the QR code (20), barcode or cheque number on the cheque (310) with a mobile device (30) or computing device having a camera or being capable of being operated with a mobile application (35) or software which can function equivalently. Prior to starting a business venture relative to the cheque, the cheque bearer may access the information in the KKB (110) cheque report of the drawer by using this method. When the KKB (1 10) web server (ws) receives such a request from any mobile application (35) or internet branch, it makes queries regarding the cheque by connecting to the drawer's bank (100) of the relative cheque from the system of the invention. Thus, the cheque status is briefly taken from the drawer's bank (100) and shared with the bearer (380). Additionally, the amount of the cheque can be guaranteed by the drawer's bank (100) in a very useful manner owing to the present invention. For this, it is sufficient for the QR code (20) to be read with the camera of a mobile device (30) and for the relative processes to be followed on the mobile application (35) by the drawer or final endorser. Additionally, the bank (100) may provide the cheque holder with loan facilities, which do not exceed the amount of the cheque requested from the non-cash limit of the drawer. If the guarantee request is received from the final endorser, the confirmation of the drawer is obtained. Whereas when a report is requested for a cheque that has been guaranteed by the bank, the guarantee information may also be shared with the party requesting a report, through being reflected onto a related report by the KKB (110). As access to information about the drawer is very simple on the system, there is no limitation regarding the guarantee process to be carried out solely on the drawer's bank (100). Thus, it is optionally enabled for the endorsers to carry out the guarantee process from their own banks. Thus, it is made possible for the debt on the cheque leaf of the final endorser to not only be insured with banks, but also with agreed insurance companies. The parties may also access the image of the cashed cheque from the system during the request processes of guaranteeing and insuring. Additionally, the drawer and the bearer have the opportunity of making contact by way of mobile platforms such as telephone, SMS or e-mail without accessing each other's contact information via the mobile application (35) on the mobile device (30). The customer's signature on the drawer's bank and the signature on the cheque may be compared on the mobile application (35) or on the internet branch. Thus, one may see whether the bearer's signature on the cheque is genuine and check for counterfeiting. Cheques are more easily exchangeable with the help of the QR code (20) or any coding to be printed onto the cheque. All of these processes may be done from the KKB (1 10) internet branch by connecting to the network service (ws) on the internet by way of mobile applications (35) on mobile devices (30) or by way of personal computers present in the payment by cheque system of the invention.
