Description

IMAGE DISPLAY DEVICE WITH ALTERNATIVE SUBTITLE VIEWING FUNCTION
The present invention relates to an image display device having an alternative subtitle viewing feature such that users are delivered a real-time subtitle set of a TV program broadcast on a channel other than the channel being actually viewed.
Digital and interactive TV systems provide a comprehensive amount of TV channels and programs leading to the general outcome that conventional methods for setting personal viewing preferences including subtitle management may become inefficient to the extent that such methods are simply unperformable in an efficient manner.
Assuming that image display devices today offer a versatile and wide range of functions, services as well as connectivity to the Internet, a plurality of services and applications retrieve information from various sources such as broadcast service providers and Internet, such information for example including weather forecast data, road traffic data, sporting events results or stock market data, it is desirable to combine the retrieved information that is processed in accordance with a given user’s interests to be displayable on the TV screen. TV channels with a focus on certain genres such as stock markets or sporting events may for example continuously broadcast subtitles, information contained in these subtitles although being of interest to the users, such channels may not be continuously viewed and therefore important information may be missed because actual content in the broadcast programs other the information in the subtitles may not be interested.
Accordingly, in accordance with the present invention, users can be offered interested information in a manner to be overlaid on a program content being actually displayed on their screen.
Among others, one of the prior art disclosures in the technical field of the present invention can be referred to as WO2005050626, which discloses a personalized subtitle system. The personalized subtitle system includes a display device, such as a Heads Up Display (HUD) device, worn or carried by a user in a public venue such as a movie theatre, playhouse, or stadium. The user utilizes the display device to select and read captioning or subtitle information for a public event such as a movie, play, or sporting event. In this way, subtitles in a variety of languages are supplied for the public event. In another embodiment, the display device is used in conjunction with a conventional subtitle display system, such as a DVD player for home use. In either embodiment, the user can operate a control panel to select a desired language. Subtitles in the selected language are then displayed to a viewer wearing or using the display device. In this way, a viewer desiring subtitles may have subtitles displayed without disrupting another viewer's enjoyment of a public venue.
The present invention provides a system and method by which an image display device is operated such that users are delivered real-time textual information in the form of subtitles originally displayed on a TV channel being currently not viewed. The present invention therefore proposes a technical solution in order for reaching relevant information without interrupting the actual TV viewing experience or undermining the quality of viewing on the part the user.
The present invention provides a system and method by which an image display device is operable to display interested textual information or subtitles in a manner to be overlaid on a program content being currently displayed on the screen, the interested textual information or subtitles being originally displayed on a TV channel being currently not viewed, as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is to provide a system and method for operating an image display device by which a subtitle generation feature is imparted to the image display device such that subtitles originally displayed on a currently not viewed TV channel are displayed in a manner to be overlaid on a program content being currently viewed.
The present invention proposes a system and method by which subtitles on a TV channel other than the actually watched channel are imported and displayed on the actual channel.
If the source channel where the subtitles are taken from is not on the same transponder as the actually viewed channel, a second tuner is used to receive program content of this secondary channel.
Subtitles imported from the secondary channel are searchable so that they are preferably shown on the primary channel only when a part thereof matches at least one keyword in a list of predetermined keywords. Further, importation can be conditional on a broadcast of a program on the secondary channel in a predefined category.
Subtitles of the program on the source channel can be alternatively retrieved from a remote source in a local or wide area network via a network connection. User confirmation can be requested before delivering the individual subtitles detected on the source/secondary channel by keyword analysis and a notification sound can be generated to be indicative of a new keyword match in the subtitles on the secondary channel.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a system and method by which an image display device is operable, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief hereinafter.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in said claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
Fig. 1 demonstrates a general flow diagram according to which the image display device of the invention executes the method of automatic subtitle importation according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 demonstrates a general flow diagram according to which the image display device of the invention executes the method of keyword-based automatic subtitle importation according to an alternative embodiment of the present invention.
The present invention provides a system and method by which an image display device is operable to display interested textual information or subtitles in a manner to be overlaid on a program content being currently displayed on the screen. According to the invention, the user can continue his/her TV viewing experience by viewing a specific TV channel of interest while at the same viewing the desired information in the form of subtitles being broadcast on another channel.
The desired information may include anything like weather forecast data, road traffic data, sporting events results or stock market data. The image display device process the TV channel or program containing the subtitles of interest, i.e. the secondary channel and retrieve the subtitle content as explained hereinafter. The processed textual information strings are then displayed on the screen in a manner to be overlaid on the actual program. The image display device of the present invention may be fitted with an internal memory in order for processing and storing the received information for future display.
In this regard, it is possible to generate imported subtitles conventionally in the form of a horizontal band moving on a lower part of the screen, retrieved by processing the transport stream of a certain actually not viewed channel as selected by the user. To this end, the user first determines the primary channel to be viewed and the secondary channel subtitle content of which is desired to be retrieved so as to be overlaid on a program broadcast on the primary channel. If the secondary channel is not on the same transponder as the primary channel, program content of the primary channel is received by a first tuner and the program content of the secondary channel by a second tuner. The main controller unit of the image display device decodes the received programs and the subtitle content of the program on the secondary channel is extracted from the transport stream thereof. The main control unit then combines the broadcast received by the first tuner and the subtitle content obtained via the second tuner and the user is delivered the subtitle content in a format overlaid on the primary channel broadcast. The second tuner will not be used in the event that the secondary channel is on the same transponder as the primary channel.
Processing of the transport stream conventionally comprises the steps of receiving a packet having the PID value of 0. A Program Map Table (PMT) describes programs representing television channels with a unique PID. The streams associated with a certain given program have PIDs listed in the PMT. The receiver therefore decodes each PID associated with its program to retrieve one video stream, occasionally more than one audio stream, and any necessary metadata.
Alternatively, according to the invention, the subtitles on the secondary channel that is not currently viewed are shown only when a part thereof matches at least one keyword in a list of keywords as determined by the user. Therefore, the subtitles are processed as searchable metadata records and only the individual subtitle lines containing a certain keyword are presented to the user. Therefore only the core information is intended to be delivered.
As a practical example, subtitles containing real-time scores of sport events can contain certain keywords; for example, upon locating the name of a football team as inputted by the user, the image display device will notify the user each time a score change occurs in the sport event of interest and the individual subtitle line broadcast on the secondary channel will be immediately displayed on the primary channel being actually viewed by the user.
The present invention also alternatively provides that the image display device enables a user to configure a list of interested program categories. It is known that digital broadcasting services generally provide information in regards to the genre of the programs being watched. The genre information may typically define a certain number of categories characterizing the content of a program. A content identifier therefore describes the contextual category of the digital program so as to let users obtain information as to the classification of an event or a program. Further, the commercials presented during a program broadcast or inserted between two programs may also be definable by the image display device based on the content identifiers.
According to an alternative embodiment of the present invention, the secondary channel is monitored only if a program in a category in the interest list of the user is broadcast on the secondary channel, broadcast of a program in the selected categories being detected on the basis of content identifiers. Therefore, all the subtitles broadcast on the secondary channel can be imported to be viewed on the primary channel or the subtitles can be shown in a filtered manner, that is, only when predefined keywords are found in the source metadata files. Additionally, either with or without keyword-based monitoring, the subtitle importation function can be called on the basis of program-specific categories as predefined by the user as interested categories. In case a specific program category condition is defined for importing subtitles from the secondary channel, the subtitles will be processed only if a program in the predetermined program category is broadcast. Therefore, the user can also perform keyword filtering in the selected category, or can prefer importing the subtitle content in full.
In accordance with the invention, the image display devices having Internet connectivity may also alternatively retrieve subtitles of the program on the secondary channel from a remote source or database and display the retrieved subtitles on the primary channel.
In the case of keyword-match based subtitle display, the user can be requested to provide his/her consent prior to presenting him/her with the subtitle content taken from the secondary channel because in the case of keyword-match based subtitle display, a plurality of subtitles may subsequently show up in a frequent manner so as to disturb the user. In this regard, a soft and non-intrusive notification sound can be generated by a respective module of the image display device and a predetermined time period can be assigned for waiting the user’s input. Additionally or alternatively, the TV front panel or the remote control can be provided with a function confirmation button such that the image display device can receive user confirmation and proceed with displaying the imported subtitle containing the predefined keyword. If the user’s input is not received or she rejected the request, the subtitle is not displayed and saved to be displayable later.
The user can in the meantime activate the secondary channel originated subtitle herself by pressing the function confirmation button anytime she desires so. If no rejected subtitle is available at a time she presses the function confirmation button, the latest most recent information will be re-displayed and the user will be allowed to switch between all of the previous information strings by re-pressing the function confirmation button.
In a nutshell, the present invention proposes an image display device receiving a plurality of broadcasting services and comprising a control unit effecting operation of said image display device, characterized in that said control unit is configured to import subtitles from a secondary channel other than a primary channel being actually viewed such that subtitle content of a program on the secondary channel is extracted from a transport stream thereof and to combine a program broadcast on the primary channel received by a tuner with the subtitle content imported from said secondary channel such that the subtitle content is displayed so as to be overlaid on the primary channel broadcast.
In one embodiment of the present invention, program content of the secondary channel is received by a second tuner if the secondary channel is not on the same transponder as the primary channel.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, subtitles imported from the secondary channel are processed as searchable metadata records.
In a yet further embodiment of the present invention, subtitles imported from the secondary channel are shown on the primary channel only when a part thereof matches at least one keyword in a list of predetermined keywords.
In a yet still further embodiment of the present invention, subtitles on the secondary channel are imported only if a program in a predefined category is broadcast on the secondary channel.
In a yet still further embodiment of the present invention, said control unit further performs the step of retrieving subtitles of a program on the secondary channel from a remote source via a network connection.
In a yet still further embodiment of the present invention, said control unit further performs the step of requesting confirmation prior to displaying the subtitle being retrieved on the basis of keyword analysis.
In a yet still further embodiment of the present invention, a notification sound is generated by the image display device and a predetermined time period is assigned in order for receiving confirmation.
In this regard, the present invention ensures that an image display device is operable to selectively import subtitles from another channel to display the same during a program broadcast actually viewed. Users can be delivered real-time subtitles in a genre-specific manner. The main advantage of the invention therefore lies in that the user is not required to frequently use her remote control can concentrate on and enjoy the content of the primary channel because she is ensured that she will be notified when a critical keyword (such as a stock market company name) appears on the secondary channel.
Accordingly, users can continue their TV viewing experience while at the same time obtaining the desired information. The information can be delivered in a non-intrusive manner without disrupting the TV viewing experience of the users.
