Description

Absorbent article and its use
This invention relates to an absorbent article which comprises crimped continuous Lyocell filaments and its use, particularly for the manufacture of cigarettes.
Prior Art
Fiber-containing filters for cigarettes are well-known. In addition to the widely used cellulose acetate fibers the patent US 5,839,448 proposes filter body elements comprising entangled continuous Lyocell filaments. The filaments are preferably in the form of hydroentangled spread tow. The
hydroentanglement is in principle well known but creates additional efforts and production costs. US 5,839,448 also discloses that the Lyocell filaments may be crimped, but gives no further details in this respect.
US 2014/0026909 A1 discloses mixed fiber slivers for use in the manufacture of cigarette filter elements. Despite it was field 17 years after the publication of US 5,839,448 the problem of degradability of used cigarette filters was still unsolved and the use of pure cellulose acetate filters was still state of the art. As an approach to solve this problem US 2014/0026909 A1 describes blends of discontinuous cellulose acetate staple fibers with second kinds of staple fibers, amongst others regenerated cellulose staple fibers. Thick fiber tows of about 1 ,5 mio deniers are cut, the resulting staple fibers are blended and by carding and subsequent drafting slivers of about 40,000 denier are obtained. Example 1 of US 2014/0026909 A1 describes the use of rayon staple fibers as the second kind of staple fibers to be blended with cellulose acetate staple fibers, but states that nevertheless no optimal product was obtained. The resulting product was splotchy in several areas, while the manufacturing process is expensive due to the manifold steps.
WO 2014/009498 describes another way to obtain degradable cigarette filters. It discloses a set of means including the use of Lyocell fibers with a linear density of from 0,5 to 8,0 denier, but preferably of from 2,0 to 3,2 denier, and a crimp rate of from 30 to 100 crimps per 10 cm, but preferably of from 60 to 80 crimps per 10 cm. This manufacturing process, too, is expensive due to the numerous steps of cutting and eventually blending.
Problem
In view of this state of the art the problem underlying this invention was to provide an absorbent article which is biodegradable and can be manufactured less expensive than the known absorbent articles, especially those which are used for the manufacture of cigarette filters.
Description
It is an object of the present invention to provide an absorbent article which comprises continuous Lyocell filaments, wherein the filaments have a single filament titer of between 0,7 and 2,4 dtex and a crimp rate of from 40 to 75 crimps per 10 cm. Surprisingly it was found that by the use of low titre Lyocell fibers a high crimp intensity as well as a high radial expansion of the tow after the blooming step can be attained. Blooming - extending the as-produced tow to de-synchronise the crimp between neighbouring filaments - is useful to fill the filter rod to attain good roundness and a firm filter rod. It is also used to control the so-called "draw" - the pressure drop along the filter rod. US 3,202,155 describes a possible blooming method and the expert skilled in the art knows even more.
Preferably the single filament titer is between 0,7 and 1 ,5 dtex. Also preferably the crimp rate is between 50 and 65 crimps per 10 cm. The smaller titer surprisingly results in a more even filter structure than with thicker titer.
The Lyocell tow can be manufactured according to the generally known Lyocell process as described among others in US 5,839,448. The absorbent article according to this invention preferably consists of a segment of a continuous tow which has a total linear density of between 35,000 and 60,000 dtex, preferably between 45,000 and 55,000 dtex. Such a tow can be directly converted into a filter element, usable e.g. in a cigarette filter.
In a preferred embodiment this absorbent article contains only said crimped continuous Lyocell filaments. This has the additional advantage that it can be obtained directly from a Lyocell spinning machine without further blending with fibers of other nature. This again is more economic than the known methods of manufacturing filter elements for e.g. cigarette filters.
Preferably the absorbent article is a filter body for the filtration of fluid media, such as gases or liquids. Preferably the fluid media is a gas, preferably origination from a combustion process. In an especially preferred embodiment the absorbent article is a filter body for a cigarette filter. Equally usable is the absorbent article as a filter body for other smoking articles like cigars, cigarillos, pipes or mouthpieces for such smoking articles.
But also for other filtration processes the absorbent article according to the invention can be used advantageously due to its easy and economic manufacture, the chemically stability of cellulose against many solvents and other chemicals and its structurally good filtration properties.
It is another object of the present invention to provide the use of an absorbent article for the manufacture of a smoking article, preferably a cigarette, wherein the absorbent article comprises crimped continuous Lyocell filaments which have a single filament titer of between 0,7 and 2,4 dtex and a crimp rate of from 40 to 75 crimps per 10 cm. Preferably the single filament titer is between 0,7 and 1 ,5 dtex. Also preferably the crimp rate is between 50 and 65 crimps per 10 cm.
Other smoking articles include cigars, cigarillos, pipes or mouthpieces for smoking articles. In a preferred embodiment the filaments can be coated with cellulose acetate- and/or cellulose acetate derivate-containing coatings, possibly in combination with triacetin.
In an as well preferred embodiment of the invention Lyocell filaments are used which are containing polyethylene glycole which was incorporated into the never-dried Lyocell filaments during their manufacture before drying the coagulated and washed filaments. This process step can generally be done only by a Lyocell producer. Also other functional additives can be incorporated into the filaments during or after their manufacture. Polyethylene glycole and similar substances can be applied to the filaments even after the crimping process before packaging.
The invention will now be illustrated by examples. These examples are not limiting the scope of the invention in any way. The invention includes also any other embodiments which are based on the same inventive concept
Examples
A cellulose acetate tow according to the state of the art (example 1) and an uncrimped Lyocell tow (example 2) were compared to two differently crimped Lyocell tows according to the invention (examples 3, 4). The Lyocell tows were manufactured according to the generally known Lyocell process as described among others in US 5,839,448, but without hydroentanglement. Parameters and properties are listed in Table 1.
