Description

VIDEO PLAYER FOR REMOTELY VIEWING MEDIA DESCRIPTION
The present invention concerns a video player of the improved type for displaying multimedia contents remotely, for example in a web page.
In particular, the invention concerns said video player configured in such a way that it can be controlled by remote control devices.
The invention concerns also an IT system comprising at least one web server and one or more display devices, each one of which includes the use of said video player.
Furthermore, the invention concerns a method for the remotely controlled reproduction of a specific multimedia content on at least one display device provided with said video player.
Before proceeding to the illustration of the drawbacks of the known art and to the definition of the characteristics of the invention that make it possible to overcome said drawbacks, it is convenient to clarify the meaning of some terms used here below.
First of all, the term "video player" refers to a special software application provided with a "virtual screen", or more simply a "screen", on which the same application is capable of reproducing an audio/video multimedia content. Video players are usually integrated in web pages that are displayed by means of browsers. It cannot be excluded, however, that said video players can be integrated in other software applications of the custom type.
The term "display devices" means electronic devices (hardware) provided with a physical monitor, or more simply a monitor, which makes it possible to display the web page or the custom application in which a video player is in turn integrated.
Finally, the term "remote control devices", in this context, means any electronic device such as a PC, a smartphone or a tablet, configured in such a way that it can be connected to the web and to allow the transmission of commands for the remote control of said display devices.
The above having being stated, it is known that a multimedia content, in particular a video production, such as for example a full-length movie or a short movie or a music video, can be reproduced through various types of media, such as TV channels, dvds or, in the case of the World Wide Web, through video players incorporated, for example, in a web page.
Independently of the media used, it is known that in some contexts there is the need to allow the remote and simultaneous reproduction of said multimedia content in several display devices. For example, some public places like shopping malls or fitness centres are provided with a plurality of display devices, such as TV sets, which are located in several points and which usually transmit promotional or music videos at the same time. In order to allow the remote and simultaneous reproduction of the various multimedia contents by said TV sets, the same are connected to one another and to at least one remote control device through a suitable wiring system and/or through WIFI adapter devices for streaming transmission.
At present, the most known example of said last type of devices is the Chromecast® device by Google®, which, through its connection to a HDMI port of a display device, makes it possible to establish a WIFI communication that in turn makes it possible to transmit a flow of multimedia contents between the same display device and a remote control device, with no need to provide special physical transmission lines.
From the explanation provided above, it is clear that, to disadvantage, the implementation of either of the two solutions described requires a manual operation to be directly carried out on each display device, either in order to install a connection cable for creating a physical line or in order to install said adapter devices.
Obviously, before performing such operations it is necessary, to disadvantage, to buy the material necessary to carry out said transmission lines, in particular it is necessary to buy the cables or said adapter devices.
In addition to the above, a further drawback posed by these two approaches of the known art lies in that from the moment when the reproduction of a multimedia content on display devices is started and for its entire duration the remote control device, to disadvantage, is constantly and completely busy. Finally, the use of said adapter devices necessarily requires the presence of a LAN (local area network), in particular of the WIFI type (WLAN), otherwise said adapter devices are not capable of communicating with each other and with the remote control device.
The present invention intends to overcome the said drawbacks.
In particular, it is the object of the invention to provide a video player configured in such a way as to allow the remote reproduction of a specific multimedia content on at least one display device, with no need to use streaming adapter devices or to provide a physical line for transmitting the flow of multimedia contents.
It is another object of the invention to provide a video player configured in such a way as to allow the remote and simultaneous reproduction of a specific multimedia content on several display devices.
Said objects are achieved through the video player having the characteristics according to the independent claim 1 , and furthermore through the IT system having the characteristics according to the independent claim 7 and through the method having the characteristics according to the independent claim 9. In particular, the video player that is the subject of the invention is characterized in that it comprises univocal identification means configured to define a univocal identification code related to the same video player, the first time it is started on a specific display device, and to store said univocal identification code in a memory support belonging to said display device. Furthermore, the video player of the invention is configured in such a way that it can confirm the opening of a communication session with the specific video player provided with said univocal identification code through remote control devices.
Further characteristics of the video player of the invention are described in the dependent claims.
In particular, the video player of the invention, according to claim 5, comprises third reception means configured to receive as an input a second flow of multimedia contents and/or one or more commands related to the control of said second flow of multimedia contents. Furthermore, the video player, in the embodiment illustrated in claim 5, comprises control means configured to control, based on said commands received as an input, the display of the second flow of multimedia contents in at least one container element defined in the same web page in which the video player of the invention is integrated. Advantageously, said characteristic makes it possible to display in said container element some extra contents that may be related to objects and/or people appearing in the multimedia content reproduced on the screen of the video player.
Furthermore, as each video player of the invention can be identified through said univocal identification code, advantageously said second flow of multimedia contents can be selected based not only on that which concerns the first multimedia content, but also on the characteristics and interests of the user who uses that specific display device and decides to display said first multimedia content.
Said objects, together with the advantages that will be highlighted below, are illustrated in greater detail in the description of a preferred embodiment of the invention that is provided by way of non-limiting example with reference to the attached drawings, wherein:
- Figure 1 shows a schematic view of a display device with a web page loaded therein and incorporating the video player of the invention;
- Figure 2 shows a schematic view of the architecture of the IT system of the invention including the use of the video player of the invention.
The video player that is the subject of the invention, suited to be incorporated, for example, in a web page 500 of any portal or web site according to the preferred embodiment of the invention, appears to the user in the form shown in Figure 1 , where it is indicated as a whole by 1.
The video player 1 of the invention, in addition to being able to be incorporated in a web page, can be integrated in custom applications suited to be implemented on any platform, apparatus, operating system and TV set.
Said video player 1 of the invention comprises, in particular, a screen 2 for the reproduction of a first main flow of multimedia contents S1 , in particular of a main video production such as, for example, a full-length movie or a short movie or a music video. For this purpose, the video player 1 of the invention is provided with first reception means 3, as schematically shown in Figure 1 , configured to receive as an input said first flow of multimedia contents S1. In this context, the term "flow of multimedia contents" means a flow of data that represents a video track or fixed images, stored in any format and comprising or not comprising also a corresponding audio track.
As regards the first reception means 3, according to the preferred embodiment of the invention they comprise an IT function 31 , more simply a "function", made available by the same video player 1 to the outside and including the introduction, as an input parameter, of the link related to the source and path of said first flow of multimedia contents S1.
In particular, according to the preferred embodiment of the invention, as schematically shown in Figure 2 and as defined in greater detail below, said source comprises a first web server 200 made available by the manager of a web portal 201 in order to allow said multimedia contents to be shared and displayed.
Usually, in such first web server 200 the same manager or any user can upload one or more flows of multimedia contents S1 to be shared with other users.
In technical jargon said type of transmission is defined as "streaming on demand".
However, the video player 1 of the invention, with said first reception means 3, would be able to receive as an input also a flow of multimedia contents S1 through the transmission technique called "live streaming", meaning a video production that is produced and transmitted substantially at the same moment. According to the invention, the video player 1 comprises univocal identification means 4 configured to define a univocal identification code 43 the first time the video player 1 is started on a specific display device 300. Said univocal identification code 43 is successively stored by the same univocal identification means 4 on a memory support 301 belonging to the display device 300, so that on each start following the first start the video player 1 does not need to redefine a new univocal identification code 43. In other words, for each video player 1 of the invention integrated in a specific display device 300, a single univocal identification code 43 is defined, which is maintained permanently unchanged for the entire period of use of the same display device 300.
Furthermore, according to the invention said univocal identification means 4 are configured in such a way as to confirm the request for the opening of a communication session made by a remote control device 400.
More specifically, at the moment when a user, through any remote control device 400, such as a smartphone or a tablet, sends a request for the opening of a communication session with a specific video player 1 integrated in a certain display device 300, said request will contain the univocal identification code 43 specific for said video player 1. All of the "waiting" video players 1 integrated in the various display devices 300 that are at the disposal of the system will receive said request. However, the only video player 1 that can confirm said request will be the video player 1 provided exactly with the specific univocal identification code 43 contained in said request. According to the preferred embodiment of the invention, said transmission of the request by a remote control device 400 and the successive confirmation by the video player 1 take place through the web server 200 in which the web portal 201 for sharing the multimedia contents is loaded.
It cannot be excluded, however, that said request and the successive confirmation, instead, are managed directly by the two devices 300 and 400 in question, and that the web server 200 is also involved only successively, in the manner described below.
In this regard, independently of which one of the two approaches just introduced is applied to request said opening of a communication session, once the latter has been established it is the task of the web server 200 to send said selected video player 1 the link of the first flow of the multimedia content S1 to be reproduced on its screen 2.
Concerning, once again, the univocal identification means 4, according to the preferred embodiment of the invention they comprise both a first initialization function 41 intended to define said univocal identification code 43 on the first start and a second function 42 made available by the same video player 1 towards the outside. In particular, said second function 42 includes the reception, as an input parameter, of the univocal identification code 43 of the video player 1 with which a communication session should be established by a remote control device 400. Furthermore, said second function 42 serves to provide the confirmation of the opening of the communication session as an output, in the case where the univocal identification code 43 that has been received corresponds to the actual univocal identification code 43 of the video player 1 , while, on the contrary, said request for the opening of a communication session is rejected in the case where said codes do not coincide.
Furthermore, according to the preferred embodiment of the invention, the video player 1 comprises also second reception means 5 configured to receive as an input, from the same remote control device 400, the start command 52 for the reproduction of said multimedia content S1 on its screen 2. In other words, advantageously, with the video player 1 of the invention a user can not only select from a remote position what multimedia content S1 must be displayed on the screen 2, but also start the reproduction of said multimedia content S1 from a remote position. Furthermore, preferably but not necessarily, said second reception means 5 are also configured to receive, in addition to the start command 52, even other types of commands 53 related to the management of said first flow of multimedia contents S1 such as, for example, the command used to stop or pause the flow itself or to resize the screen 2. Concerning said second reception means 5, according to the preferred embodiment of the invention they also comprise a function 51 that is at the disposal of the remote control devices 400 and includes the introduction, as an input parameter, of the command code related to the start 52 or related to other operations 53 for managing said first flow of multimedia contents S1. It cannot be excluded, however, that according to different embodiments of the invention the video player 1 may not be provided with said second reception means 5, but on the contrary the start and, in general, the management of the first flow of multimedia contents S1 are controlled directly on each individual display device 300.
Going back to the preferred embodiment of the invention, the video player 1 furthermore comprises interrogation means 6 configured in such a way as to send said request for the opening of a communication session to a second video player 1 provided at least with the univocal identification means 4 and integrated in a second display device 300. In other words, with said further interrogation means 6, the display device 300 in which the video player 1 of the invention is integrated, in addition to being able to be remotely controlled, becomes a remote control device 400 capable of activating said communication sessions with further display devices 300 in which the video players 1 of the invention are integrated.
Regarding said interrogation means 6, according to the preferred embodiment of the invention they comprise a function 61 that makes it possible to send the request for the opening of a communication session with a second video player 1 present in the display device 300 with which said communication should be established.
In order to allow the above, the function 61 accepts as an input parameter the univocal identification code 43 of said second video player 1.
Also in this case it cannot be excluded, however, that in alternative embodiments of the invention the video player 1 may not be provided with said interrogation means 6. Therefore, according to said last embodiment, the display device 300, in which the video player 1 is integrated, can passively serve only as a display and not even as a remote control device 400.
Again, preferably but not necessarily, the video player 1 of the invention comprises further third reception means 7 configured to receive as an input a second flow of multimedia contents S2 and/or one or more commands 72 related to the management of said second flow of multimedia contents S2. In combination with said third reception means 7, the video player 1 of the invention preferably comprises also control means 8 configured in such a way that they can manage, based on said commands 72 received, the display of the second flow of multimedia contents S2 in at least one container element 501 defined, for example, in the same web page 500 in which the video player 1 is incorporated, as shown in Figure 1 .
In this context, the term "container element" 501 means a portion of space in said web page 500 that can be univocally identified and is independent of the other portions of the same web page 500. From a technical point of view, each one of said container elements 501 is identified by the tag "DIV" in the HTML markup language.
In this way, advantageously, as already mentioned above, said additional characteristic makes it possible to display in said container element 501 some extra contents that may be related to objects and/or people that appear in the multimedia content reproduced on the screen 2 of the video player 1.
Furthermore, as each video player 1 of the invention can be identified through said univocal identification code 43, advantageously said second flow of multimedia contents S2 can be selected not only based on that which concerns the first multimedia content S1 , but also based on the characteristics and interests of the user who uses that specific display device 300.
Furthermore, specifically, according to the preferred embodiment of the invention, said control means 8 are configured in such a way that they can start the display of the second flow of multimedia contents S2 in said container element 501 in precise and pre-established time intervals during the reproduction of the first flow of multimedia contents S1 on the screen 2 of the video player 1.
In order to make the last concepts clearer, an application example is proposed below, which illustrates how the video player 1 of the invention can be exploited for commercial purposes. In this regard, it should be assumed that a first remote user, using a remote control device 400, decides to start the reproduction of a music video on a display device 300, in particular on a TV set located in a fitness centre, precisely in proximity to the fitness area. The video player 1 that is the subject of the invention is clearly integrated in said display device 300.
Let us assume also that between the second and the third minute of reproduction of said music video a person eating cereals is displayed. In this situation, said web portal 201 , being configured to recognize, thanks to the univocal identification code 43, that a specific music video is being reproduced on that precise display device 300, provides for sending a second flow of multimedia contents S2 to the third reception means 7 of the video player 1. Said second flow of multimedia contents S2 may contain some nutritional information on cereals and further information on the supermarket, located near the fitness centre, where it is possible to buy cereals of a renowned brand. Furthermore, the web portal 201 may also send said control means 8, through the same third reception means 7, a series of commands 72 intended to allow the display of said second flow of multimedia contents S2 on a container element 501 positioned beside the screen 2 of the video player 1 itself, precisely between the second and the third minute of reproduction of the music video, that is, in the precise moment when the person eating cereals appears in said music video.
From the example illustrated above it can be clearly understood that thanks to the video player 1 of the invention it is possible to obtain a considerable commercial advantage, as it is possible to start the reproduction of customized advertisements based on the main multimedia content displayed and based on the characteristics and interests of the users who display said multimedia content.
As regards, furthermore, the third reception means 7, according to the preferred embodiment of the invention they also comprise a function 71 according to which the link related to the source and path of said second flow of multimedia contents S2 and the command code or codes 72 related to the management of the second flow of multimedia contents S2 are introduced as input parameters.
Furthermore, regarding the control means 8, according to the preferred embodiment of the invention they comprise an internal processing function 81 suited to manage said second flow of multimedia contents S2 based on the command codes 72 received by said third reception means 7.
It cannot be excluded, however, that in different embodiments of the invention the video player 1 may not be provided with said third reception means 7 and said control means 8.
Furthermore, it cannot be excluded that in a further alternative embodiment of the invention the video player 1 may be provided with said first, second and third reception means 3, 5 and 7 and with the control means 8, but may not be provided with the univocal identification means 4 and the interrogation means 6.
As previously mentioned, the invention comprises also an IT system 100 for sharing multimedia contents S1 and S2, schematically illustrated in Figure 2. Said IT system 100, in particular, comprises said web server 200 that in turn is provided with a memory support 202 where a user or the manager uploads said plurality of multimedia contents S1 and S2.
Furthermore, the web portal 201 configured in such a way as to allow said multimedia contents S1 and S2 to be shared and displayed is loaded in the memory support 202.
Furthermore, the IT system 100 comprises a plurality of said display devices 300, each one of which, according to the invention, is provided with a video player 1 having the characteristics described above. In particular, as already explained in detail, each one of said video players 1 comprises means configured in such a way as to allow communication with the web portal 201 and/or with remote control devices 400 and the reproduction of the multimedia contents S1 and S2 present in said web server 200.
Furthermore, according to the invention, in the IT system 100 the web portal 201 is configured to transmit, on request of a remote control device 400, a first flow of multimedia contents S1 to the first reception means 3 of the video player 1 provided with a specific univocal identification code 43. Furthermore, the web portal 201 is configured in such a way as to send a start command 52 for the reproduction of the first flow of multimedia contents S1 received to the second reception means 5 of said specific video player 1.
Furthermore, according to the preferred embodiment of the invention, the web portal 201 is configured to transmit, on request of a remote control device 400, a second flow of multimedia contents S2 and/or one or more commands 72 related to said second flow of multimedia contents S2 to the third reception means 7 of the video player 1 of the invention.
Finally, according to the preferred embodiment of the invention, said web portal 201 is configured so as to transmit said first flow of multimedia contents S1 , together with the second flow of multimedia contents S2, also to video players belonging to the known art and therefore not featuring the characteristics described above. In particular, in order to allow the simultaneous display of said two flows of multimedia contents S1 and S2, the web portal 201 is configured in such a way as to define a single flow of multimedia contents, obtained by mixing and editing said two flows S1 and S2 in real time. In greater detail, in order to allow both of said two flows of multimedia contents S1 and S2 to be simultaneously displayed on the same screen of a video player of the known art, the web portal 201 is configured in such a way as to resize the first flow of multimedia contents S1 so as to reduce its size with respect to the size of the video player screen. Furthermore, the web portal 201 is configured in such a way as to add the second flow of multimedia contents S2 in the portions of screen on which said first flow of multimedia contents S1 is not reproduced.
According to the preferred embodiment of the invention, this operation is carried out whenever the display of the first flow of multimedia contents S1 is required. Alternatively, said operation may be performed periodically, based on how many times the first flow of multimedia contents S1 is displayed. In any case, to advantage, said processing cycle allows the manager of the web portal 201 to vary the contents of the second flow of multimedia contents S2 and, therefore, to transmit different promotional messages in relation to the first flow of multimedia contents S1 according to previously established criteria.
According to an alternative embodiment of the IT system 100 of the invention, said further function of the web portal 201 may be implemented with no need for the web portal 201 to be configured to communicate with the video players 1 of the invention and with no need for the display devices 300 belonging to the IT system 100 to be provided with said video players 1 of the invention. The invention also includes the method for remotely reproducing a specific multimedia content S1 on at least one display device 300 belonging to said IT system 100. According to the method, in particular, a first display device 300, in the case where the corresponding video player 1 is provided with said interrogation means 6, or any other remote control device 400 sends a request for the opening of a communication session with a second display device 300 provided with a video player 1 having a specific univocal identification code 43. Successively, according to the method, confirmation of said request for the opening of a communication session is transmitted by said second display device 300 provided with the video player 1 having exactly said specific univocal identification code 43.
Finally, according to the method of the invention, the web portal 201 transmits the first flow of multimedia contents S1 to the first reception means 3 and the start command 52 for the reproduction of said first flow of multimedia contents S1 to the second reception means 5 of the video player 1 integrated in the second display device 300.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, according to said method, furthermore, the web portal 201 transmits a second flow of multimedia contents S2 and/or one or more commands 72 related to the control of said second flow of multimedia contents to the third reception means 7 of the video player 1. Furthermore, according to the method, the display of the second flow of multimedia contents S2 in the second display device 300 is started through the control means 8 and based on said received commands 72, in a container element 501 defined in the same web page 500 in which the video player 1 is integrated, as shown in Figure 1 .
Preferably, said start of reproduction of the second flow of multimedia contents S2 is performed in precise and pre-established time intervals during the reproduction of the first flow of multimedia contents S1 on the screen 2 of the video player 1.
As in the video player 1 of the invention, according to an alternative embodiment also in said method the first and the second flow of multimedia contents S1 and S2 and the related commands 52 and 72 may be transmitted without having first provided for opening a specific communication session based on the univocal identification code 43 of the video player 1 integrated in a given display device 300.
Based on the explanation provided above, it can thus be understood that the video player, the IT system and the method of the invention achieve all the set objects.
In particular, the invention achieves the object to provide a video player configured in such a way as to allow the remote reproduction of a specific multimedia content on at least one display device with no need to use streaming adapter devices or to provide a physical transmission line for transmitting the flow of multimedia contents.
The invention also achieves the object to provide a video player configured in such a way as to allow a specific multimedia content to be remotely and simultaneously reproduced on several display devices.
