Abstract

A device, medium and method for generating an optimal image of a subsurface of the earth. The method includes receiving (702) measured seismic data D related to the subsurface of the earth, wherein the measured seismic data D includes primary data Dp and multiple data Dm; calculating (704) estimated multiple seismic data dm based on (i) a reverse time multiple demigration operator Mm and (ii) an initial image r of the subsurface; generating (706) an objective function E that includes a first term defined by a cross-correlation of the measured multiple data Dm with the estimated multiple seismic data dm; and calculating (708) the optimal image of the subsurface by maximizing or minimizing the objective function E.
