Description
TRAILER FIFTH WHEEL COUPLING EMERGENCY RELEASE
ARRANGEMENT
Technical Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a trailer fifth wheel coupling
emergency release arrangement comprising a fifth wheel coupling
arrangement for coupling a trailer to a towing vehicle and a connecting device connecting the fifth wheel coupling arrangement to the towing vehicle.
Background Art
A truck trailer may be designed to be coupled to a towing vehicle by means of a fifth wheel coupling arrangement. Such a truck may experience a rollover. Truck rollover accidents may cause severe or fatal injuries and/or damage to property. To address this problem a truck may be provided with a rollover detection system and an emergency release arrangement which disengages the trailer from the towing vehicle of the truck when a rollover is about to occur.
US 7,731 ,216 discloses a device for disengaging a trailer from a tractor. The device comprises pneumatic release cylinders and two release pins, each of which is connected to a support. An air actuator is arranged to pull out the release pins from the support when a rollover is about to occur. However, the air actuator may fail to pull out such release pins due to file drawer effect.
With respect to previously known solutions, it is desirable to provide a more robust and less complex trailer fifth wheel coupling emergency release arrangement.
Summary of the Invention
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved fifth wheel coupling emergency release arrangement.
This and other objects that will be apparent from the following summary and description are achieved by a fifth wheel coupling emergency release arrangement according to the appended claims.
According to an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a trailer fifth wheel coupling emergency release arrangement comprising a fifth wheel coupling arrangement for coupling a trailer to a towing vehicle and a connecting device connecting the fifth wheel coupling arrangement to the towing vehicle, wherein the trailer emergency release arrangement comprises at least one pyrotechnical charge arranged at said connecting device and at least one igniter, said igniter being adapted to, when receiving a rollover emergency signal, bring said pyrotechnical charge to detonate to destroy the connecting function of the connecting device for releasing the fifth wheel coupling arrangement from the towing vehicle, thereby releasing the trailer from the towing vehicle.
In order to avoid that both the towing vehicle and trailer of a truck roll over in a turn, the trailer may thus be released from the towing vehicle when a roll over is about to occur. When receiving a rollover emergency signal, which is indicative of a predicted roll over event, the pyrotechnical charge thus destroys the connection between the fifth wheel coupling arrangement and the towing vehicle. An arrangement that may eliminate the risk of failure caused by file drawer effect may thus be provided. This arrangement thus has the advantage that it allows trailer to be released from the towing vehicle in a very fast and reliable manner. Furthermore, a cost-efficient trailer emergency release arrangement that is easy to fit in a towing vehicle is provided.
According to one embodiment the fifth wheel coupling arrangement comprises a mounting plate for connection to the towing vehicle by said connecting device in order to facilitate attachment of the fifth wheel coupling arrangement to the towing vehicle.
According to one embodiment the connecting device comprises at least one bolt joint system in order to provide a very robust connection of the fifth wheel coupling arrangement to the towing vehicle. Furthermore, a connection device that is easy to mount may be provided.
According to one embodiment the mounting plate is configured for being horizontally connected to the towing vehicle frame by the connecting device. This embodiment has the advantage that bolts may be arranged vertically, which enables a very fast and reliable release of the mounting plate.
According to one embodiment said bolt joint system comprises a bolt configured to extend through a hole in a connecting portion of said fifth wheel coupling arrangement and through a hole in a mounting portion of the towing vehicle, and a nut which is adapted to engage said bolt and to be destroyed by said pyrotechnical charge.
According to one embodiment said nut comprises a plurality of nut segments.
According to one embodiment adjacent nut segments of said nut are interconnected at fracture lines, thereby forming a frangible nut.
These and other aspects of the present disclosure will be apparent from and elucidated with reference to the claims and the embodiments described hereinafter.
Brief Description of the Drawings
The invention will hereafter be described in more detail and with reference to the appended schematic drawings.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view and illustrates a trailer fifth wheel coupling emergency release arrangement according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.
Figs. 2a-c are perspective views and illustrate the function of the trailer fifth wheel coupling emergency release arrangement 1 shown in Fig. 1 .
Detailed Description of Preferred Embodiments of the Invention
Fig. 1 illustrates a trailer fifth wheel coupling emergency release arrangement 1 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.
The fifth wheel coupling emergency release arrangement 1 comprises a fifth wheel coupling arrangement 3 for coupling a trailer 5 to a towing vehicle 7 and connecting devices 9 connecting the fifth wheel coupling
arrangement 3 to the towing vehicle 7. The towing vehicle 7 and the trailer 5 together forms a truck 10.
The trailer 5 is provided with a king pin 1 1 for connection to the fifth wheel coupling arrangement 3 of the towing vehicle 7.
The fifth wheel coupling arrangement 3 comprises a conventional fifth wheel plate 15 and a mounting plate 17 to which the fifth wheel plate 15 is connected in a known manner. The mounting plate 17 of the fifth wheel coupling arrangement 3 is connected to a flat base plate 18, which is secured to the vehicle frame 13, e.g. by conventional bolt joint systems.
The mounting plate 17 is in this case connected to the base plate 18 by six connecting devices 9. It is however realized that the mounting plate 17 may be connected to the base plate 18 by more or fewer connecting devices. Each connecting device 9, one of which is illustrated in an enlarged part of Fig. 1 , is of the type described in EP 2 142 962 and will be only briefly described herein. Each connecting device 9 comprises a bolt joint systems 19 and an initiator device 21 . Each initiator device 21 is connected to an electrical control unit (not shown) by means of a cable (not shown) in a known manner. Thus, the release pins used in prior art according to US 7,731 ,216 can be avoided. The absence of such release pins elimitates the risk of failure caused by file drawer effect since no pins need to be pulled out from a support.
Each bolt joint system 19 comprises a threaded bolt 23 extending through a hole 25 in the mounting plate 18 and a nut 27 engaging the bolt 23. Each nut 27 comprises three nut segments 27a, 27b, 27c.
In this embodiment the mounting plate 17 of the fifth wheel coupling arrangement 3 is connected to the base plate 18 of the towing vehicle 7 by three such bolt joint systems 19 on each side of the fifth wheel plate 15. To this end each of the the mounting plate 17 and the base plate 18 is provided with holes at two of its side edges.
The initiator device 21 of each connecting device 9 is in this case a pyrotechnical squib of a type known in the art and comprises a pyrotechnical charge and an electrical igniter. The electrical igniter is adapted to, when receiving a rollover emergency signal from a electrical control unit (not
shown) of the towing vehicle 7, bring said pyrotechnical charge to detonate to destroy the connection function of the bolt joint system 19 of the connection device 9, thereby allowing release of the mounting plate 17, which is also referred to as fire plate 17, from the towing vehicle 7.
Hence, when a rollover event is about to occur the fifth wheel coupling arrangement 3 may be released from the towing vehicle 7 by destroying the connection between the fire plate 17 and the towing vehicle frame 13. Then, the trailer 5 is released from the towing vehicle 7. In this way the towing vehicle 7 of the truck 10 may be prevented from rolling over.
With reference to Figs. 2a-c the function of the trailer fifth wheel coupling emergency release arrangement 1 will be described hereinafter.
Fig. 2a illustrates the truck 10 at the entrance of a turn 29. High speed and/or high center of gravity of the truck load and/or small curvature of the turn 29 may cause the truck 10 to experience an initial phase of a rollover event, as schematically illustrated by arrows A in Fig. 2b. Such an event event is detected by a rollover sensor system (not shown) of the truck 10. A control unit determines, based on signals received from a rollover sensor, whether the initiator device 21 of the trailer fifth wheel coupling emergency release arrangement 1 should be activated or not. A trigger logic of the control unit thus determines wether to send a rollover emergency signal or not. If the control unit determines that a rollover event is about to occur a emergency signal is sent to the initiator device 21 . Upon receiving a rollover emergency signal the electrical igniter of the initiator device 21 brings the pyrotechnical charge of the initiator device 21 to detonate and destroy the connecting function of the connecting device 9, as illustrated by the arrow B in Fig. 2b. The fifth wheel coupling arrangement 3 is then released from the towing vehicle 7, as illustrated by arrow C in Fig. 2b and in Fig. 2c. Then, the trailer 5 is released from the towing vehicle 7 of the truck 10, as illustrated in Fig. 2c. As illustrated in Fig. 2c the trailer 5 completes the initiated rollover event while the towing vehicle 7 continue traveling along the road.
It is realized by a person skilled in the art that features from various embodiments disclosed herein may be combined with one another in order to provide further alternative embodiments.
Hereinbefore, it has been described with reference to Fig. 1 that a mounting plate 17 of the fifth wheel coupling arrangement 3 is connected to a second mounting plate 18, i.e. the base plate 18 which is connected to the towing vehicle frame 13, which is secured to the towing vehicle frame 13 by conventional bolt joint systems. Alternatively, the mounting plate 17 of the fifth wheel coupling arrangement 3 may be directly connected to the towing vehicle frame 13. Then, there is thus no need for a second mounting plate 18.
